Jiang Yuyan opened the door to see a large crowd gathered outside. She couldn’t help but marvel at the power of gossip.
Captain Yang spoke first: “Hello, my name is Yang. I heard your house—”
“Ahhhh—”
Before he could finish, a piercing scream erupted from inside. The sound was quickly cut off but was still audible to those outside.
His expression turned serious. “Comrade, this is a police investigation. Please let us in.”
Jiang Yuyan glanced at Deng Baodi, hiding at the back of the crowd—Jiang Third Son’s wife. Their eyes met, and Baodi ducked her head in fright, shrinking into the crowd.
With a light smile, Jiang Yuyan said, “Of course, we cooperate with the police. Please come in!”
She opened the front door wide, allowing the curious onlookers to see everything in the yard.
Inside, the police were stunned by the blood-soaked scene, with bodies sprawled everywhere.
“Gasp!” The crowd outside drew in their breath.
Jiang Mother stepped forward. “Oh, police officers, thank goodness you’re here. Yesterday, our family was almost killed by these violent criminals!”
The officers were speechless. The crowd outside was also silent—surely no one was actually dead?
Captain Yang, an experienced officer, noticed faint breathing and slight twitches in some of the people on the ground. They were alive.
He turned to Jiang Father, holding a stick. “Comrade, what exactly happened here? Can someone explain?”
Jiang Father, being simple-minded, could only work and not speak.
Jiang Murong pushed Jiang Muxuan forward, who was seated in the wheelchair Jiang Yuyan had retrieved from the scrap yard yesterday.
Jiang Muxuan spoke, “Officers, I want to report that Jiang Third Son conspired with outsiders to steal our family inheritance and—kidnap and traffic people.”
“You’re lying!”
All eyes turned to see Deng Baodi, screaming in shock.
Jiang Muxuan lifted a corner of his lips. “Officers, this is Jiang Third Son’s wife. Judging by her expression, she should be aware of what happened.”
Terrified, Deng Baodi shook her head, trying to retreat. “No, I don’t know… I know nothing!”
Captain Yang shouted, “Hold her!”
In the next second, the fleeing Baodi was restrained by the police.
“During an investigation, any information related to the case must be verified. Everyone, please cooperate,” Captain Yang ordered.
Everyone nodded obediently.
With the scene under control, Jiang Muxuan pointed to the pockmarked man.
“Officers, check this man. Jiang Third Son just said that all his previous actions, even the human trafficking, were under this man’s orders.”
Hearing this, Captain Yang lifted Jiang Third Son for a look, then examined the pockmarked man carefully and nodded with the other officers.
He smiled. “This man is indeed a major wanted criminal involved in human trafficking. We’ve been tracking their hideouts for a long time, but they always escaped cleverly. Catching him now may help clear your brother’s name. For your family’s contribution, I will apply for the highest commendation.”
Jiang Muxuan bowed seriously. “Thank you, officers, for clearing my brother’s name. Our family is truly grateful.”
Captain Yang noticed the awkward posture of some of the officers. He gestured for them to remain silent—just arrest the criminals.
After the police left and the crowd dispersed, Jiang Old Lady, watching from afar, felt the sky collapse.
Why?
Why was Jiang Yuyan’s family fine, while her Third Son and daughter-in-law were taken away by the police?
And who were the men taken from Jiang Yuyan’s house? Could they be related to Third Son?
Thinking this, her mind went blank, and she fainted.
Jiang Mother closed the gate, patting her chest, reassuring herself.
Jiang Yuyan curved her eyes. “Mom, your expression just now was incredible. You didn’t even look scared—you were braver than me.”
Jiang Mother beamed. “Really? Oh my girl, you don’t know, my legs were trembling the whole time.”
Jiang Murong chimed in, “Sister, and me? I was pushing our elder brother the whole time, no hesitation at all.”
Jiang Yuyan gave a thumbs-up. “Third Brother was amazing, Father too, and Big Brother even more. Everyone was incredible.”
“Hehe!”
Jiang Muxuan silently shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. Though he didn’t outwardly show it, his gaze toward Jiang Yuyan softened.
Later, back in her room, as Jiang Yuyan lay down, there was a knock at the door. Jiang Muxuan looked up and saw her pause mid-motion while covering herself, then subtly tucked her legs under the blanket.
“Come in! What is it?”
Jiang Yuyan casually dragged a chair next to the bed. “Big Brother, why did you let Father and Third Brother break those men’s hands and legs today?”
She knew Jiang Muxuan wasn’t a cruel man—he wouldn’t do such a thing without reason.
Jiang Muxuan said, “They tried to harm our family. They needed to be taught a lesson.”
Jiang Yuyan tilted her head, smiling. “Big Brother, isn’t it also for me? Hehe… don’t be shy, tell me. I want to know what you were thinking.”
“Cough… who told—”
The image of silly Jiang Murong’s smile flashed in his mind, and his expression stiffened.
Jiang Yuyan stopped teasing and spoke seriously:
“Big Brother, I also want to know why they used Second Brother to evade the police. Who gave them Second Brother’s identity, knowing he would take advantage?”
Jiang Muxuan frowned, deep in thought.
“Wait on that. That pockmarked man is stubborn; even after Mu Ren broke his hands and legs, he still blamed Jiang Third Son. If we didn’t know Third Son, we might have believed him. Whoever gave them that identity must be someone even more powerful, someone he couldn’t provoke.”
Jiang Yuyan’s expression turned serious. “I don’t understand. What does our family have to attract someone so powerful?”
Their schemes were undeniably cunning.
She briefly considered Lin Yue, but the timing didn’t fit. Lin Yue left Jiang’s house for her own family before Jiang Muxuan and Jiang Yiyi got into trouble, and the Jiang family was stripped bare.
One by one, if Jiang Yuyan hadn’t suddenly returned and changed the situation, the family’s fate would have been terrifying.
Jiang Muxuan looked at Jiang Yuyan, sensing that all this had to do with the new sister.
Yet he knew too little to be sure, so he kept silent to avoid causing worry.
“If you’re concerned, in a couple of days you can go to town with Mu Ren to check the situation. In the meantime, don’t go out alone—be careful.”
