Chapter 12: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The players walked out of the tunnel without a word. The noise from the crowd returned the moment both teams stepped onto the pitch.

The scoreboard still read: *San Isidro High School 0 – 0 Green Valley Academy.*

Forty-five minutes remained — forty-five minutes to decide which team would finish at the top of the group.

Kai took a deep breath, looking around the field. The first half had taught him something important: Green Valley wasn't unbeatable, but they wouldn't give away a single opportunity for free.

The referee looked at both captains before blowing his whistle. The second half began.

Unlike the first half, Green Valley wasted no time. Their midfield moved the ball from side to side, forcing San Isidro's players to chase.

Miguel pointed left. "Shift! Stay together!"

Kai dropped into midfield to help close the passing lanes. Coach Ramirez watched quietly from the sideline — he didn't need to shout. The players already knew what they had to do.

Five minutes passed without a shot on target. The game had turned into a battle of patience.

Then Green Valley suddenly raised the tempo — one quick pass, then another. Their attacking midfielder spun away from his marker and slipped a through ball toward Ethan.

Kai reacted instantly. "Ethan!"

Miguel was already tracking back. Ethan received the pass with his back to goal and, instead of turning, flicked it behind him. A teammate burst into the space he'd created and shot immediately.

BANG!

San Isidro's keeper pushed it away with both hands. The rebound bounced toward the edge of the box, but before another Green Valley player could reach it, Kai sprinted back and cleared it high into the stands.

The San Isidro supporters applauded. Coach Ramirez nodded once. "Good recovery."

Kai jogged back into position, breathing heavier now — the pace of the match was much faster than before. He glanced at Ethan. The Green Valley captain wasn't frustrated. If anything, he looked impressed.

"You read that play."

Kai smiled. "I've been watching you."

Ethan chuckled. "Then keep watching. You'll still miss something."

The referee signaled for play to continue.

San Isidro slowly found their rhythm again. Miguel controlled the midfield with calm, simple passes — no unnecessary risks, no desperate long balls. Football didn't always reward the team that attacked the most. Sometimes it rewarded the team that stayed calm the longest.

In the fifty-third minute, Kai drifted toward the right wing. A Green Valley defender followed — exactly what Coach Ramirez wanted. The center of the defense opened for just a second, and Rafael saw the gap and sprinted through it.

Kai controlled the ball and delivered a perfectly weighted through pass. The timing couldn't have been better — Rafael was clean through on goal. The crowd rose to its feet. "Finish it!"

Rafael struck first time.

BANG!

The Green Valley keeper reacted brilliantly — the shot struck his left arm and bounced off the crossbar. The rebound flew back into the box, players from both sides rushing it in chaos, until a Green Valley defender reached it first and cleared the danger.

Rafael covered his face with both hands. "I should've scored..."

Kai jogged over and tapped his shoulder. "You made the right run. We'll get another chance."

The missed chance gave Green Valley new energy. Their supporters clapped louder than ever. Ethan pointed to his teammates. "Let's punish that mistake."

The attack came almost immediately — a long diagonal ball found their left winger, who took one touch before whipping in a dangerous cross. Ethan accelerated between two defenders and timed his jump perfectly.

THUD!

His header flew for the bottom corner. The keeper stretched, fingertips brushing the ball — but it wasn't enough. It kissed the inside of the post before crossing the line.

GOOOAAAL!

The Green Valley supporters erupted. Ethan simply raised one hand to the crowd before jogging back to the halfway line — no wild celebration, just quiet confidence.

The scoreboard changed: *San Isidro High School 0 – 1 Green Valley Academy.*

Silence fell over the San Isidro side. Kai stared at the scoreboard — the first time they'd fallen behind in the tournament.

Miguel picked the ball out of the net. He didn't slam it down or complain — just carried it calmly to the center circle. "We still have time."

Rafael nodded. "One goal changes everything."

Coach Ramirez called everyone in before the restart, his voice calm. "Listen. If you panic, they've already won. We don't need two goals right now — we only need the next one."

Kai nodded slowly. The words settled his racing mind. One goal. That's all they needed.

As the referee prepared to restart, a familiar blue notification appeared before Kai.

Kai smiled faintly. For the first time, the system wasn't giving him instructions — it was simply echoing something Coach Ramirez had already said.

The screen disappeared. Kai placed the ball on the center spot, looking at Rafael, then Miguel, then finally Ethan. The Green Valley captain met his eyes and gave a small nod. Neither player wanted the match to end like this — both believed there was still another chapter left to write.

The referee raised his whistle.

Peeeeep!

San Isidro kicked off again — this time not with desperation, but with belief.

Nobody rushed forward. Kai tapped the ball back to Miguel before sprinting into space. Green Valley expected another direct attack; instead, San Isidro slowed the tempo, moving the ball from one side of the field to the other. For nearly a minute, Green Valley couldn't get close enough to win it back.

Coach Ramirez folded his arms, a small smile appearing. "That's it. Make them chase."

Kai drifted toward the left wing again. The same defender followed him — but this time Kai didn't ask for the ball. He just kept moving, and the Green Valley backline shifted with him.

Miguel spotted the gap immediately and threaded a low pass through the middle. Rafael met it with his first touch. The stadium rose. "Shoot!"

A defender lunged at the last second, so Rafael calmly laid the ball back instead. Kai was already arriving — the goal looked wide open for a split second — but he heard footsteps closing fast behind him. Two defenders.

"Not yet."

With the outside of his boot, he slipped it to Miguel at the edge of the box. Miguel didn't stop it — one touch, a perfectly weighted return pass splitting the defense. Rafael timed his run to perfection. This time there was no hesitation.

BANG!

The ball rocketed into the roof of the net.

GOOOOOAAAL!

The San Isidro section exploded. Rafael sprinted to the corner flag with both fists raised. Kai caught up and wrapped an arm around him. "You deserved that one."

Rafael laughed. "Only because you trusted me."

The scoreboard changed: *San Isidro High School 1 – 1 Green Valley Academy.*

At the halfway line, Ethan picked up the ball, bounced it once, and looked at Kai. "You've changed."

Kai tilted his head. "In what way?"

"You don't force things anymore."

Kai smiled. "My dad says football gets easier when you stop trying to do everything alone."

Ethan nodded. "Your dad sounds like a good coach."

"He is."

The whistle blew. The match continued.

With the score level again, the game grew even more intense — every challenge harder, every sprint longer. Miguel dropped to one knee for a moment, catching his breath.

Kai offered a hand. "You good?"

Miguel grinned. "I'll rest after we win."

Green Valley answered with another dangerous attack — their winger beat his marker and whipped in a high cross. Ethan attacked it, Kai right with him, and the two jumped almost together.

THUD!

The ball glanced off Ethan's head and drifted just over the crossbar. Ethan landed first and laughed. "I almost had that."

Kai smiled. "So did I." No anger between them — only respect, each one pushing the other to get better.

The clock reached the eighty-second minute. Coach Ramirez called Miguel to the sideline during a throw-in and whispered a single sentence. Miguel's eyes widened, then he nodded.

When play resumed, Kai noticed the change — Miguel had switched positions with Rafael, a tactical adjustment they'd never practiced before. Green Valley hadn't noticed. Not yet.

Kai understood immediately. *Coach is gambling.*

A blue screen flickered for barely a second.

Kai didn't finish reading it. He closed the notification, eyes staying on the pitch — on his teammates, on the empty spaces beginning to appear. For the first time since the match started, Green Valley's defense looked tired. Tiny mistakes had begun creeping into their positioning.

Coach Ramirez saw it too. He stepped closer to the touchline, his voice cutting through the crowd noise. "One more! Keep believing!"

Kai took a deep breath and looked toward Miguel. Miguel looked back. Neither spoke — they didn't need to. Both knew exactly what the next attack could mean.

The referee glanced at his watch. Only a few minutes remained. One chance. Maybe two.

The next decision could decide the entire match.

End of Chapter 12.
