Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The match entered its final minutes.
The scoreboard read:
San Isidro High School 1 – 1 Green Valley Academy
The afternoon sun had begun to sink, casting long shadows across the field.
Every player was exhausted.
Heavy breaths echoed with every sprint.
Sweat soaked every jersey.
Yet no one slowed down.
Not now.
Not when victory was only one goal away.
Coach Ramirez glanced at the giant clock above the stands.
83:47
He stepped closer to the touchline.
"Stay composed!"
"Don't throw everything forward!"
"If the chance comes..."
"Take it!"
The players answered with determined nods.
Kai wiped the sweat from his forehead.
His legs felt heavier than they had all tournament.
Even breathing had become difficult.
But when he looked around...
He realized everyone else looked the same.
Miguel bent over for a second before straightening again.
Rafael rubbed his calves while jogging back into position.
Even Ethan was breathing harder than before.
Fatigue didn't choose sides.
It tested everyone equally.
Green Valley restarted play.
Instead of attacking quickly, they slowed the tempo.
Short passes.
Patient movement.
They wanted San Isidro to lose concentration.
Kai didn't bite.
He remembered what his father had told him after his very first football lesson.
"The last five minutes decide whether ninety minutes of hard work matter."
He smiled to himself.
"I won't waste them."
The ball eventually reached Ethan near the edge of the penalty area.
He turned beautifully, escaping one defender.
Kai immediately sprinted back.
Miguel closed from the other side.
For the first time all afternoon...
Ethan hesitated.
Two defenders.
No clear passing lane.
He chose to shoot.
BANG!
The ball curled toward the far corner.
The entire stadium held its breath.
San Isidro's goalkeeper stretched with everything he had.
His fingertips brushed the ball.
CLANG!
The shot struck the outside of the post before rolling behind for a goal kick.
The Green Valley supporters covered their faces.
Ethan placed both hands on his hips.
"...So close."
Kai walked past him.
"That would've been a great goal."
Ethan laughed softly.
"I'll score it next time."
Kai answered with a grin.
"Only if I'm not there."
The goal kick was taken quickly.
Miguel received the ball near midfield.
Instead of forcing a long pass, he slowed the game again.
"Calm down!"
he shouted.
"We'll get our chance!"
Kai nodded.
This wasn't the time for heroics.
One mistake could end everything.
Minutes passed.
Neither team created another clear opportunity.
The tackles became harder.
The passes became riskier.
Players began cramping.
The referee stopped play twice as exhausted players stretched their legs.
The atmosphere inside the stadium became almost unbearable.
Nobody in the stands was sitting anymore.
Parents.
Teachers.
Students.
Everyone stood.
Waiting.
Daniel crossed his arms tightly.
Beside him, Sofia clutched their mother's hand.
"Papa..."
"Will Kuya win?"
Daniel never took his eyes off the field.
"I don't know."
Then he smiled.
"But I know one thing."
"He won't stop fighting."
On the opposite side of the stadium...
Arturo Villanueva quietly closed his notebook.
He had already written several observations.
Kai Bendaño
✔ Excellent decision-making.
✔ High football IQ.
✔ Team-first mentality.
✔ Strong mentality under pressure.
Arturo looked toward the field once more.
Then he whispered,
"Now..."
"Show me how you perform when everything is on the line."
The referee checked his watch.
87:12
Only a few minutes remained.
Coach Ramirez made one final substitution.
A fresh winger entered the match.
The exhausted defender walked off to loud applause.
As the substitute ran onto the pitch, Coach grabbed his shoulder.
"Run."
"That's all I need from you."
The boy nodded.
"I understand, Coach."
Kai noticed the tactical change immediately.
Fresh legs on the wing.
Miguel dropping slightly deeper.
Rafael moving closer to the center.
Coach wasn't playing for a draw.
He was quietly preparing one final attack.
Kai's heartbeat quickened.
The familiar blue screen flickered for barely a second.

Kai blinked.
The notification disappeared before he could read anything else.
He smiled.
"No..."
"I don't need you yet."
He lifted his head.
Instead of looking at the blue screen...
He looked at his teammates.
Miguel.
Rafael.
The substitute sprinting down the wing.
Then...
He saw it.
A tiny gap beginning to open behind Green Valley's defensive line.
Not because of the system.
Because he had learned to see it himself.
Kai slowly started running.
Far across the field...
Ethan noticed the movement.
His eyes narrowed.
"...He's planning something."
Without saying a word...
Ethan chased after him.
The final attack...
Had already begun.
Kai accelerated toward the open space.
Behind him, Ethan followed without hesitation.
Neither of them spoke.
There was no need.
Both understood that the next few minutes would decide everything.
Miguel regained possession after intercepting a loose pass in midfield.
Instead of rushing forward, he lifted his head.
"Kai!"
The pass rolled into Kai's path.
Kai received it with his right foot before turning away from pressure.
A Green Valley midfielder charged toward him.
Another defender stepped up from the back line.
For a split second, Kai looked trapped.
Then...
He smiled.
He tapped the ball backward.
Miguel was already there.
One touch.
A quick switch to the left.
The substitute winger exploded down the flank with fresh legs.
The Green Valley defense shifted immediately.
Ethan pointed toward the wing.
"Cover him!"
That single command pulled two defenders away from the center.
Kai didn't sprint.
He jogged.
Patiently.
Waiting.
Watching.
Just like his father had taught him.
"Don't run because you're excited."
"Run because the moment is right."
The winger reached the edge of the box.
A defender closed him down.
Instead of crossing immediately, he delayed for a second.
That tiny pause changed everything.
Kai slipped between the two center-backs unnoticed.
The Football Legacy System flickered.

The blue screen disappeared almost instantly.
Kai never looked at it again.
His eyes were already on the ball.
The cross came low.
Fast.
Behind the defenders.
Rafael darted toward the near post.
Three Green Valley players followed him.
Exactly as Coach Ramirez had hoped.
Kai continued his run toward the far side of the six-yard box.
Unmarked.
Rafael reached the ball first.
Instead of shooting...
He flicked it backward with the heel of his boot.
The pass rolled perfectly into Kai's path.
Time seemed to slow.
The goalkeeper rushed forward.
The crowd held its breath.
Kai remembered the chance he had wasted weeks ago during training.
Back then...
He had panicked.
Today...
He stayed calm.
One touch.
The goalkeeper committed.
Kai gently pushed the ball to his left.
The keeper slid past him.
The goal was open.
No defender could recover in time.
Kai looked up once.
Then calmly placed the ball into the net.
GOOOOOOOOOAL!!
For a heartbeat...
The entire stadium fell silent.
Then the San Isidro supporters erupted.
Students jumped from their seats.
Teachers hugged one another.
Flags waved wildly in the air.
Miguel sprinted toward Kai with both arms raised.
Rafael tackled him into a hug.
"You did it!"
Kai laughed.
"We did it."
The rest of the team piled on.
Even the goalkeeper ran the length of the field to celebrate.
Near the halfway line, Ethan stood with his hands on his hips.
Disappointed.
But not angry.
He watched the celebration before smiling to himself.
"That was a beautiful goal."
The referee glanced at his watch.
There were only two minutes of added time.
Green Valley threw everyone forward.
Every player attacked.
Every pass carried urgency.
San Isidro defended together.
Kai tracked back, helping clear a dangerous cross.
Miguel blocked a powerful shot from outside the box.
The final seconds ticked away.
The referee lifted the whistle.
PEEEEEEP!
PEEEEEEP!
PEEEEEEP!
The match was over.
Final Score
San Isidro High School 2 – 1 Green Valley Academy
Cheers echoed throughout the stadium.
Coach Ramirez closed his eyes for a brief moment before smiling.
His players had followed the plan until the very end.
As the teams lined up to shake hands, Ethan stopped in front of Kai.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then Ethan extended his hand.
"You earned it."
Kai accepted the handshake.
"So did you."
Ethan laughed.
"I hate losing."
Kai smiled.
"So do I."
Ethan pointed toward Kai's chest.
"The next time we meet..."
"I'll be stronger."
Kai answered without hesitation.
"Then I'll have to improve too."
The two strikers shared one final nod before walking back to their teammates.
Neither realized...
This wouldn't be their last match against each other.
One day...
They would wear the same jersey.
High in the stands, Arturo Villanueva quietly closed his notebook.
Under Kai's name, he wrote one final sentence.
Performs under pressure.
He slipped the notebook into his bag.
"This tournament..."
"...was worth attending."
Without another word, he walked toward the stadium exit.
Kai looked around the field.
His teammates were still celebrating.
His coach was shaking hands with the opposing staff.
In the front row...
He spotted his father.
Daniel didn't cheer wildly.
He simply raised a thumb.
A small gesture.
But it meant everything.
Kai smiled and returned the gesture.
The dream that had started with an old pair of football boots...
Had just taken another step forward.
End of Chapter 13.
