Chapter 18: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The referee's whistle echoed across the stadium.

PEEEEEEEP!

Halftime.

The players slowly walked toward the tunnel.

Neither team celebrated.

Neither team complained.

Holy Cross remained calm.

San Isidro remained silent.

Kai walked at the back of the group.

His breathing was heavy.

His jersey clung to his body from sweat.

Yet...

His mind wasn't thinking about the score anymore.

It replayed only one moment.

That tiny opening.

The narrow gap between Holy Cross's left-back and center-back.

It had appeared for less than a second.

Then...

It disappeared.

Kai quietly smiled.

"It exists..."

"Their defense isn't perfect."

Inside the locker room...

No one spoke.

The sound of running water echoed softly.

Some players sat with their heads lowered.

Others stretched their tired legs.

Miguel removed his captain's armband before placing it beside him.

He let out a deep sigh.

"They're tougher than I expected."

Rafael nodded.

"I thought we'd have more chances."

Kai remained seated.

He wasn't discouraged.

If anything...

He felt more confident than before.

The locker room door opened.

Coach Ramirez entered.

He carried no tactical board.

No notebook.

Only a football tucked beneath his arm.

He placed it gently on the floor.

His eyes moved from one player to another.

Then...

He smiled.

"I'm proud of all of you."

Several players looked up in surprise.

Coach continued.

"You're probably wondering why."

No one answered.

"Because..."

"You didn't lose your composure."

"You stayed patient."

"You trusted each other."

He picked up the ball again.

"Against Green Valley..."

"Talent decided the match."

"But today..."

"Football IQ will decide everything."

Coach finally walked toward the whiteboard.

With a black marker...

He drew Holy Cross's defensive shape.

Four defenders.

Four midfielders.

Two forwards.

Then...

He drew San Isidro's attack.

Every arrow pointed through the middle.

Coach shook his head.

"They wanted us to attack here."

He circled the center of the pitch.

"And we almost kept doing exactly what they wanted."

He erased the arrows.

This time...

He drew long passes from one wing to the other.

"Second half..."

"We stretch them."

"We make them run."

"We don't chase the goal."

"We create it."

Kai stared at the board.

Everything matched what he had noticed before halftime.

Rafael slowly raised his hand.

"Coach..."

"What if they don't break?"

Coach smiled.

"They will."

Rafael frowned.

"How can you be so sure?"

Coach walked toward the window overlooking the pitch.

"Because they're human."

"They get tired."

"They lose concentration."

"They make mistakes."

He turned back toward the team.

"Our job..."

"...is to make those mistakes happen."

The room fell silent.

Kai lowered his gaze.

Without warning...

A familiar blue screen appeared.

The screen disappeared almost immediately.

Kai blinked once.

That was all.

No magical answer.

No guaranteed strategy.

Only confirmation.

Coach Ramirez had already seen it on his own.

Kai smiled faintly.

"The system only confirmed it..."

"Coach figured it out first."

Coach placed the marker down.

He looked directly at Kai.

"Kai."

"Don't force the final pass."

Kai nodded.

"I won't."

"If they close one side..."

"What will you do?"

"I'll switch the play."

Coach smiled.

"And if they close that too?"

Kai thought for a second.

"I'll wait."

A proud smile spread across Coach Ramirez's face.

"Exactly."

"The ball moves faster than any player."

"Let football do the work."

A loud knock interrupted the meeting.

"Three minutes!"

called the match official from outside.

Players immediately stood.

Miguel looked around the room.

"We're only one goal behind."

"No panic."

"No heroes."

"We win together."

One by one...

The players extended their hands.

Kai placed his hand on top.

Rafael followed.

Then everyone else.

"San Isidro!"

"One team!"

"One dream!"

Their voices echoed through the locker room.

Moments later...

The tunnel came into view.

The roar of thousands of spectators returned.

Holy Cross stood on the opposite side.

Adrian Castillo glanced toward Kai for a brief moment.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them smiled.

The referee checked his watch.

"Let's go."

Both teams began walking toward the bright afternoon sunlight.

The second half...

Was about to begin.

The afternoon sun shone brightly over San Isidro Municipal Stadium.

As both teams stepped out of the tunnel...

The crowd erupted into applause.

The energy inside the stadium felt completely different from the first half.

Everyone knew the next forty-five minutes would decide the Group A champion.

Kai slowly walked toward the center circle.

Before taking his position...

He glanced across the pitch.

Holy Cross Academy had already formed their defensive shape.

Even before the whistle...

Their captain, Adrian Castillo, pointed toward different areas of the field.

"Keep the lines tight."

"Watch the wings."

"Don't let them switch the ball easily."

His teammates answered with simple nods.

No unnecessary words.

No panic.

Kai couldn't help but admire them.

"Their communication never stops..."

On the touchline...

Coach Ramirez folded his arms.

Beside him, Assistant Coach Leo smiled.

"They're preparing for us."

Coach nodded.

"So are we."

The referee checked both assistant referees.

He looked at the two captains.

"Ready?"

Miguel nodded.

Adrian nodded as well.

The whistle rose.

PEEEEEEEP!

The second half had officially begun.

Miguel tapped the ball backward.

Unlike the first half...

San Isidro refused to attack immediately.

The ball moved calmly between the defenders.

Left.

Center.

Right.

Back again.

Holy Cross didn't press.

They simply shifted together.

Like a single unit.

The crowd began shouting.

"Attack!"

"Move forward!"

But Kai ignored every voice outside the field.

Coach's instructions echoed inside his mind.

"Make them move."

Five passes.

Eight passes.

Ten passes.

Holy Cross continued sliding from side to side.

Their defensive shape remained almost perfect.

Almost.

Kai noticed Adrian shouting more frequently now.

"Left!"

"Push up!"

"Close him!"

The Holy Cross captain had become louder than he was in the first half.

"He's working harder now..."

Kai thought.

Minute forty-nine.

Miguel intercepted a loose pass near midfield.

Without hesitation...

He played it toward Kai.

The moment Kai received the ball...

Three Holy Cross players shifted toward him.

Exactly as expected.

Kai smiled.

Instead of turning...

He played a one-touch pass back to Miguel.

Miguel immediately switched the play to the opposite wing.

The stadium gasped.

The ball traveled nearly forty meters.

San Isidro's left-back controlled it perfectly.

For the first time all match...

Holy Cross's right winger arrived late.

Only half a second.

But Kai saw it.

"Again..."

"The gap is growing."

The attack continued.

The left-back passed inside.

Back to Kai.

One touch.

Back outside.

No player held the ball longer than two seconds.

Holy Cross chased.

Shifted.

Recovered.

Repeated.

Sweat now covered every defender's face.

Their movements remained disciplined.

But no longer effortless.

Coach Ramirez quietly smiled.

"That's it..."

"They're beginning to feel it."

Assistant Coach Leo nodded.

"They're still organized."

Coach answered calmly.

"For now."

Minute fifty-three.

Kai received another pass between the lines.

This time...

He didn't look toward the goal.

He looked toward Adrian Castillo.

The Holy Cross captain had stepped slightly farther from his position than before.

Just one step.

It wasn't a mistake.

Yet.

But it was enough to tell Kai something.

"He's starting to leave his zone..."

Kai immediately played the safest pass possible.

No risk.

No hero play.

Holy Cross recovered once again.

But Adrian glanced toward one of his midfielders.

There was the slightest hint of frustration on his face.

Kai noticed it.

So did Coach Ramirez.

The coach whispered to himself.

"Good..."

"They're starting to question each other."

The scoreboard still showed:

San Isidro High School 0–1 Holy Cross Academy

But something had changed.

The match no longer belonged to Holy Cross.

San Isidro had taken control of the tempo.

The crowd could feel it.

Every completed pass brought louder cheers.

Every successful switch forced Holy Cross to run farther.

Kai wiped the sweat from his forehead.

He looked toward the left side once more.

The crack he had discovered before halftime...

Was no longer just a crack.

It was slowly becoming an opening.

He took a deep breath.

"One more mistake..."

"That's all we need."
