Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The match reached the fifty-sixth minute.
The scoreboard remained unchanged.
San Isidro High School 0 – 1 Holy Cross Academy
Yet...
Anyone watching the game could feel it.
The momentum had shifted.
Holy Cross still defended with discipline.
But unlike the first half...
They were no longer controlling the pace.
San Isidro was.
Miguel received the ball near the halfway line.
He looked up.
"Kai!"
Kai checked into space before receiving the pass with the inside of his right foot.
Immediately...
Two Holy Cross midfielders stepped toward him.
Exactly as they had done all afternoon.
Kai smiled.
"Come."
Without taking another touch...
He sent the ball back to Miguel.
Miguel switched it to the left.
The left-back controlled.
Back to the center.
Then to the right.
Holy Cross shifted once again.
Their defensive block stayed compact.
But every switch forced them to sprint another few meters.
On the touchline...
Coach Ramirez watched quietly.
Assistant Coach Leo leaned closer.
"They're still holding."
Coach nodded.
"They won't collapse all at once."
"They'll crack..."
"...one decision at a time."
Minute fifty-nine.
Holy Cross regained possession.
Instead of attacking quickly...
They slowed the game.
Adrian Castillo raised one hand.
"Keep the ball."
Their midfield exchanged short passes.
Trying to kill San Isidro's rhythm.
Kai didn't chase wildly.
He remembered Coach's words.
"Don't let them dictate your emotions."
Instead...
He cut off the passing lane toward the defensive midfielder.
Rafael pressed from the front.
Miguel stepped in behind him.
The trap was set.
The Holy Cross center-back hesitated.
Just for a heartbeat.
He attempted a square pass.
Miguel anticipated it perfectly.
INTERCEPTED!
The stadium exploded.
"GO!"
Miguel immediately pushed the ball forward.
Kai was already running.
Adrian Castillo reacted instantly.
He stepped across Kai's path.
Not with a foul.
Not with brute force.
Just perfect positioning.
Kai couldn't receive the pass cleanly.
The ball rolled loose.
Both players lunged for it.
THUD!
Shoulder against shoulder.
The crowd roared.
Kai managed to poke the ball wide before losing his balance.
The left winger arrived first.
Without stopping...
He whipped a low cross into the box.
Rafael attacked the near post.
A defender followed.
Miguel sprinted into the space behind them.
The cross skipped across the grass.
Rafael intentionally let it roll between his legs.
A dummy.
Miguel met it first.
BANG!
His first-time shot flew toward the bottom corner.
The goalkeeper reacted.
He stretched every inch of his body.
PALM!
The ball deflected away.
Not out.
Still alive.
Kai was already there.
The rebound bounced waist-high.
The entire stadium expected him to shoot.
He drew back his right leg...
Then stopped.
Two defenders had already thrown themselves into the shooting lane.
"Not yet."
Instead of forcing glory...
Kai cushioned the ball with one touch.
He laid it backward into open space.
Miguel was already arriving again.
The Holy Cross defenders scrambled desperately.
Miguel struck—
BLOCK!
Adrian Castillo threw himself in front of the shot.
The ball ricocheted out for a corner.
The Holy Cross captain remained on one knee for a moment, breathing heavily.
His teammates gathered around him.
For the first time all match...
Their faces showed exhaustion.
Kai looked toward Adrian.
The captain slowly stood up.
He dusted off his shorts.
Then he smiled.
"You're getting closer."
Kai smiled back.
"So are you."
No arrogance.
No hatred.
Only respect between two competitors giving everything they had.
As San Isidro prepared for another corner...
Coach Ramirez raised two fingers from the touchline.
A new set-piece signal.
Kai noticed it immediately.
Miguel nodded.
Rafael quietly adjusted his position.
Holy Cross was ready.
San Isidro was ready.
One perfectly executed play...
Could change the entire match.
Kai slowly walked toward the edge of the penalty area.
He looked around.
Every Holy Cross player had already found his assignment.
Adrian Castillo stood in the center of the box, constantly pointing at his teammates.
"Near post."
"Watch Rafael."
"Don't lose Kai."
The defenders answered with short nods.
Their breathing had become heavier.
But their concentration never wavered.
Miguel raised two fingers.
The signal Coach Ramirez had just given.
Kai immediately understood.
It wasn't the same corner routine they had used before.
Rafael quietly stepped away from the penalty spot.
Instead of standing beside Adrian...
He drifted toward the far post.
Miguel slowly backed away from the goalkeeper.
Everything looked ordinary.
Exactly as planned.
The referee blew his whistle.
The corner was delivered.
Instead of aiming directly into the crowded penalty area...
The ball floated toward Kai.
Waiting just outside the box.
Several Holy Cross players hesitated.
"Close him!"
Adrian shouted.
Kai allowed the ball to bounce once.
The crowd expected a powerful volley.
Instead...
He calmly controlled it.
One touch.
Then another.
The nearest midfielder rushed toward him.
Kai slipped the ball to Miguel before the challenge arrived.
Miguel returned it immediately.
A perfect one-two.
Kai had created just enough space.
Without lifting his head...
He curled a dangerous cross toward the far post.
Rafael attacked the ball.
He rose higher than his marker.
THUMP!
The header flew toward the top corner.
The Holy Cross goalkeeper reacted instinctively.
His fingertips brushed the ball.
CLANG!
The crossbar shook violently.
The rebound dropped inside the six-yard box.
Chaos erupted.
Blue jerseys.
White jerseys.
Everyone lunged for the loose ball.
Kai sprinted forward.
A defender cleared desperately.
The ball rolled only as far as Miguel.
He struck it first time.
BANG!
Another block.
Adrian Castillo threw himself into the shot once again.
The stadium erupted into applause.
Even the neutral spectators couldn't hide their excitement.
Coach Ramirez clapped loudly.
"Keep going!"
"They're surviving!"
"They're not controlling!"
Leo laughed quietly.
"They're hanging on by a thread."
Holy Cross restarted with a goal kick.
For the first time in the match...
Their goalkeeper took longer than usual.
He wiped the sweat from his gloves.
Looked around.
Then finally kicked the ball long.
Kai noticed it immediately.
"They're no longer confident playing from the back."
That alone told him everything.
San Isidro's pressure was working.
Minute sixty-four.
Holy Cross attempted a counterattack.
Their winger accelerated down the right side.
For a brief moment...
The San Isidro supporters fell silent.
Miguel chased with everything he had.
The winger pushed the ball one touch too far.
Kai, who had sprinted all the way back from midfield, slid in.
SWISH!
A perfectly clean tackle.
The ball rolled safely toward San Isidro's left-back.
The crowd exploded.
"KAI!"
"KAI!"
"KAI!"
Kai quickly stood up.
"No time to celebrate."
He pointed forward.
"Let's go!"
The attack restarted immediately.
Pass after pass...
Holy Cross continued retreating.
They still defended well.
But no longer by choice.
They were being forced backward.
Adrian looked toward his teammates.
Their legs were getting heavier.
Every switch of play demanded another sprint.
Another recovery.
Another adjustment.
For the first time all afternoon...
He felt something he hadn't experienced in this tournament.
Pressure.
Real pressure.
Kai received another pass near midfield.
He lifted his head.
The same tiny opening...
Had become slightly wider.
Not enough for a killer pass.
Not yet.
But enough to make him believe.
He smiled to himself.
"One more attack..."
"Just one perfect attack."
The referee glanced at his watch.
The match entered its final twenty-five minutes.
The scoreboard still read:
San Isidro High School 0–1 Holy Cross Academy
But everyone inside the stadium could feel it.
The next goal...
Would change everything.
