Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The match entered its seventieth minute.
The tension inside San Isidro Municipal Stadium continued to rise.
Every completed pass drew applause.
Every interception earned loud cheers.
Neither set of supporters dared to sit comfortably.
Everyone could feel it.
The match was changing.
Holy Cross Academy no longer looked as composed as they had in the first half.
Their defensive line still moved together.
But their recovery runs had slowed.
The gaps between players closed...
Just a fraction later than before.
It was almost impossible for an ordinary spectator to notice.
But Kai noticed.
Every single time.
Miguel received the ball and immediately looked toward Kai.
Kai shook his head.
"Not yet."
Miguel understood.
Instead of forcing a forward pass...
He calmly switched play to the opposite flank.
Holy Cross shifted again.
Four blue shirts sprinted together.
Coach Ramirez watched quietly.
"They're spending more energy than we are."
Assistant Coach Leo smiled.
"They're chasing shadows now."
On the field...
Kai never stopped moving.
He drifted left.
Then right.
Sometimes he dropped beside Miguel.
Other times he ran beyond Rafael.
To the crowd...
It looked random.
To Holy Cross...
It was exhausting.
Adrian Castillo wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Stay compact!"
"No one leaves the line!"
His teammates answered immediately.
"Yes, Captain!"
High above the field...
The scout leaned forward.
His notebook remained closed.
He wasn't watching the ball anymore.
He was watching Kai.
Every movement.
Every change of direction.
Every decision without possession.
He quietly muttered,
"He understands space..."
"...better than most youth players."
For the first time...
He circled Kai's name.
A few rows below...
Belle nervously held onto the railing.
Her friend glanced at her and smiled.
"You've barely blinked."
Belle didn't answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the field.
She didn't know much about tactics.
But even she could tell...
Kai wasn't chasing the ball anymore.
He was making Holy Cross chase him.
Minute seventy-two.
Holy Cross finally stole possession.
Their winger accelerated down the left side.
The counterattack developed quickly.
One pass.
Two passes.
Three.
The ball reached their striker just outside the penalty area.
He fired without hesitation.
BANG!
The shot screamed toward the bottom corner.
San Isidro's goalkeeper dived at full stretch.
PALM!
The ball bounced away.
Before the rebound could be reached...
Miguel threw himself into a sliding clearance.
SWISH!
The danger was gone.
The San Isidro supporters erupted in relief.
Coach Ramirez clapped once.
"They're desperate."
"They know this is their chance."
Miguel slowly got back to his feet.
His breathing had become heavy.
He looked toward Kai.
"They're throwing everything now."
Kai nodded.
"Which means..."
"...they're finally afraid."
Miguel smiled.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
San Isidro restarted from the back.
No panic.
No long balls.
One pass.
Then another.
Holy Cross pressed.
For the first time all afternoon...
They abandoned their patient block.
They wanted the second goal.
Coach Ramirez's eyes widened.
"There..."
Leo looked toward him.
"They broke their discipline."
Coach nodded.
"Exactly."
"They've stepped into our rhythm."
Kai received the next pass near the halfway line.
He turned smoothly.
Then...
For the first time in the match...
Adrian Castillo left the defensive line before Kai even reached the final third.
Kai's eyes narrowed.
"There it is..."
The opening wasn't inside the defense.
The opening...
Was Adrian himself.
If the captain stepped out...
Someone else would have to cover.
And for the first time...
Holy Cross's famous wall...
Had cracked.
The stadium buzzed with anticipation.
No one could sit still anymore.
Every spectator sensed it.
Something was about to happen.
Kai slowed the tempo once again.
The ball rolled back to Miguel.
Then to the right-back.
Across to the left.
Back through midfield.
Holy Cross continued shifting as a unit.
But their movements were no longer as crisp as before.
Heavy breaths echoed across their back line.
Adrian Castillo pointed repeatedly.
"Move!"
"Stay together!"
"Close the gap!"
His teammates obeyed...
But each recovery run came a little slower.
Kai drifted toward the left wing.
No defender followed.
Instead...
Adrian stepped out himself.
For the first time all afternoon.
Kai smiled.
"You finally left your post."
Miguel noticed it too.
Without hesitation...
He slipped a firm pass into Kai's feet.
Kai controlled it with his first touch.
Adrian closed him down immediately.
The two stood face-to-face once again.
The crowd erupted.
"Come on, Kai!"
Adrian lowered his stance.
"No way through."
Kai remained calm.
"I know."
He wasn't trying to beat Adrian.
He only needed...
One more step.
Kai nudged the ball sideways.
Adrian followed.
Exactly as expected.
Behind him...
The defensive line shifted.
For just a heartbeat...
The space between the center-back and full-back widened.
It was barely visible.
But Kai saw it.
Without looking...
He flicked the ball back to Miguel.
One touch.
Miguel returned it instantly.
Another one-touch pass.
Holy Cross shifted again.
The gap became wider.
Coach Ramirez clenched his fist.
"Now!"
Kai received the return pass.
Everything around him seemed to slow.
Rafael began his run toward the far side.
His marker reacted a split second late.
Kai didn't hesitate.
With the outside of his right boot...
He threaded the ball through the narrow opening.
The pass sliced between three defenders.
Perfectly weighted.
Perfectly timed.
The entire stadium gasped.
"RAFAEL!"
Miguel shouted.
Rafael burst onto the pass.
He reached it just before the goalkeeper.
The keeper rushed forward.
Closing the angle.
Rafael didn't panic.
He opened his body...
Then calmly guided the ball toward the far corner.
The goalkeeper stretched desperately.
His fingertips missed by inches.
The ball rolled...
Rolled...
Then...
THUD!
It kissed the inside of the post before crossing the line.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!
The stadium exploded.
San Isidro supporters leaped to their feet.
Flags waved wildly.
The commentator nearly lost his voice.
"IT'S IN!"
"SAN ISIDRO HAVE EQUALIZED!"
"WHAT A PASS!"
"WHAT A TEAM GOAL!"
Rafael sprinted toward the corner flag with both arms spread wide.
Before celebrating...
He turned back toward Kai.
He pointed directly at him.
"That was yours!"
Kai only smiled.
"No..."
"It was ours."
Miguel reached them first, wrapping both of them in a hug.
Soon...
The entire team piled into the celebration.
On the touchline...
Coach Ramirez allowed himself a rare smile.
"They finally understood."
"They stopped looking for heroes..."
"...and started trusting each other."
Across the field...
Adrian Castillo stood motionless.
He looked back at the space behind him.
The space he had protected for more than seventy minutes.
He quietly let out a breath.
"So..."
"You found it."
Kai looked toward him from midfield.
Neither player spoke.
No words were necessary.
Both understood.
The match had changed.
The scoreboard now read:
San Isidro High School 1 – 1 Holy Cross Academy
There were still more than fifteen minutes left to play.
The wall had fallen.
Now...
Only one team would leave the field as the champion of Group A.
