Chapter 22: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The celebrations slowly came to an end.

Coach Ramirez raised both hands toward his players.

"Back to your positions!"

"The match isn't over yet!"

His voice cut through the noise inside San Isidro Municipal Stadium.

Kai took a deep breath.

The excitement of scoring slowly faded.

There were still minutes left to play.

Nothing had been secured.

The referee walked back toward the center circle.

He glanced at both captains before raising his whistle.

PEEEEEEEP!

Play resumed.

The scoreboard still read:

San Isidro High School 2 – 1 Holy Cross Academy

Only a few minutes remained.

For San Isidro...

They had to protect their lead.

For Holy Cross...

It was their final chance.

Adrian Castillo clapped loudly.

"One last push!"

"We're not done yet!"

Every Holy Cross player nodded.

Their fatigue was obvious.

Their jerseys were soaked with sweat.

But no one had given up.

Not yet.

Holy Cross attacked immediately.

The ball moved quickly across midfield.

One pass.

Then another.

Their midfielders pushed higher than before.

Even their full-backs joined the attack.

Coach Ramirez stepped to the edge of the technical area.

"Everyone behind the ball!"

"Stay organized!"

Miguel pointed toward the right side.

"Mark your man!"

"Don't leave any space!"

Kai sprinted back into his own half.

His legs felt heavier than ever.

Every breath burned.

Yet he never slowed down.

He tracked a runner, closed a passing lane, then immediately shifted toward the center.

The Football Legacy System remained silent.

No notifications.

No guidance.

Kai smiled faintly.

"I don't need it now."

He trusted his own judgment.

Holy Cross earned a free kick nearly thirty meters from goal.

Their supporters rose to their feet.

"This is it!"

Adrian stood over the ball.

He glanced toward the crowded penalty area.

Then...

He sent a dangerous cross curling toward the far post.

Players leaped into the air.

THUD!

Miguel met the ball first.

His powerful header cleared it outside the box.

Rafael reacted immediately, chasing the loose ball before clearing it farther upfield.

The San Isidro supporters roared in approval.

"What a clearance!"

The clock continued to tick.

89th minute.

Holy Cross refused to stop attacking.

Another cross.

Another clearance.

Another desperate attempt.

Every player on the field looked exhausted.

But neither team wanted to surrender.

High in the stands...

Arturo Villanueva watched quietly.

His notebook remained tucked beneath his arm.

His attention was no longer on tactics.

Instead...

His eyes occasionally drifted toward the family section.

Toward Daniel.

Years had passed.

Yet the familiar face was impossible to mistake.

Arturo let out a slow breath.

"So... it really is you."

He looked back at the field.

"After the match..."

"...I'll talk to him."

Daniel remained completely focused on the game.

He never noticed Arturo watching from above.

Beside him, Maria held Sofia's hand tightly.

"Almost over..."

Maria whispered.

Sofia nodded excitedly.

"Kuya can do it!"

Daniel smiled without taking his eyes off the pitch.

"They all can."

The referee looked at his watch.

Then raised one hand.

"Four minutes of added time!"

A collective gasp spread around the stadium.

Four more minutes.

Four more minutes to defend everything they had worked for.

The fourth official lowered the electronic board.

+4

Every player on the field knew exactly what it meant.

Four minutes.

Just four more minutes separated San Isidro High School from the biggest victory in the school's football history.

Holy Cross restarted with urgency.

They abandoned their patient build-up.

Every pass now went forward.

Every attack carried desperation.

Adrian Castillo pushed higher up the pitch.

"Keep moving!"

"One goal!"

"We only need one!"

His teammates answered with renewed determination.

The ball reached Holy Cross's left winger.

He sprinted down the flank before whipping in an early cross.

It curled dangerously toward the six-yard box.

Miguel tracked the flight of the ball.

He timed his jump perfectly.

THUMP!

His header sent the ball away once again.

The clearance landed near the edge of the penalty area.

A Holy Cross midfielder met it first.

Without hesitation—

BANG!

He struck a powerful volley.

Kai reacted instinctively.

He threw himself into its path.

THUD!

The ball slammed against his shoulder before spinning out for a corner.

The stadium erupted.

"KAI!"

"What a block!"

Kai winced from the impact but immediately climbed back to his feet.

"I'm okay!" he shouted before Miguel could even ask.

Holy Cross prepared for one final corner.

Even their goalkeeper sprinted into the penalty area.

Coach Ramirez noticed immediately.

"Watch everyone!"

"Nobody loses their marker!"

Every San Isidro player nodded.

The entire penalty area became crowded.

Blue shirts.

Red shirts.

Shoulder to shoulder.

Waiting.

The corner kick was delivered.

The ball floated high above the six-yard box.

Adrian rose above everyone.

For a split second...

It looked as though he would reach it.

Then—

THUMP!

Miguel met the ball first.

The captain's header cleared it beyond midfield.

The clearance wasn't perfect.

But it was enough.

Kai chased after it with everything he had left.

A Holy Cross defender followed close behind.

Instead of forcing another attack...

Kai turned toward the corner flag.

He shielded the ball with his body.

One defender pressed him.

Then another.

Kai stayed calm.

He protected the ball, forcing valuable seconds off the clock.

The San Isidro supporters counted loudly.

"Ten!"

"Nine!"

"Eight!"

The referee glanced at his watch.

Holy Cross finally managed to win the ball back.

One last attack.

One final opportunity.

Their midfielder launched a long pass into the penalty area.

The goalkeeper rushed out.

Miguel stepped forward.

Adrian challenged him in the air.

Both players collided.

The ball bounced harmlessly toward San Isidro's goalkeeper.

He caught it securely against his chest.

No rebound.

No second chance.

The stadium fell silent.

Everyone waited.

The goalkeeper held the ball for a moment before placing it on the ground.

The referee looked at his watch one last time.

Then—

PEEEEEEEEEEP!

PEEEEEEEEEEP!

PEEEEEEEEEEP!

Full time.

San Isidro High School 2 – 1 Holy Cross Academy.

For a heartbeat...

Nobody moved.

Then the stadium exploded.

Cheers echoed from every corner.

Students waved school flags.

Teachers embraced one another.

Parents applauded proudly.

San Isidro High School had officially finished as Group A Champions.

Kai dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

A second later...

Miguel pulled him back to his feet.

"We did it!"

Rafael laughed as he wrapped both of them in a hug.

"No..."

"We all did it."

One by one, the rest of the team joined the celebration.

Coach Ramirez walked onto the field with a proud smile.

He looked at every player before speaking.

"I'm proud of every one of you."

"You trusted each other."

"You fought until the very end."

"And you earned this victory."

The players applauded their coach before surrounding him in celebration.

Across the field...

Holy Cross formed a line.

Adrian led his teammates toward San Isidro.

One after another, both teams exchanged handshakes.

When Adrian reached Kai, he smiled tiredly.

"Congratulations."

Kai shook his hand firmly.

"Thank you."

"You made us earn every minute."

Adrian chuckled.

"Then it was a match worth playing."

The two players nodded respectfully before moving on.

There was disappointment.

But there was also mutual respect.

Near the center circle, a tournament official approached Kai with the match ball.

He smiled warmly.

"Congratulations."

"The winning goalscorer keeps the match ball."

Kai accepted it with both hands.

For a moment...

He simply stared at it.

The ball felt heavier than before.

Not because of its weight...

But because of everything it represented.

His first winning goal.

His team's biggest victory so far.

A memory he would never forget.

As the celebrations continued, the stadium announcer's voice echoed through the speakers.

"Congratulations to San Isidro High School, the champions of Group A!"

"The official knockout-stage draw will be announced tomorrow morning."

Excited cheers rose from the San Isidro supporters once again.

A new challenge was already waiting.

High above the stands...

Arturo Villanueva quietly closed his notebook.

His eyes drifted toward Daniel once more.

After a brief pause...

He took a slow breath.

"...It's time."

Without another word, he turned and began walking toward the stairs.

The past...

Was finally about to catch up with the present.
