Chapter 23: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The celebration on the pitch slowly began to settle.

San Isidro's players gathered near the touchline, smiling as teachers, classmates, and parents applauded from the stands.

The victory had secured first place in Group A.

But for Kai...

It was only the beginning.

Coach Ramirez blew his whistle once.

"Alright!"

"Line up!"

The players quickly formed a straight line.

Though exhausted...

Every face carried the same smile.

Assistant Coach Leo walked over carrying a cooler filled with water bottles.

"Drink first."

"You've earned it."

The players laughed as they grabbed the bottles one after another.

Miguel poured cold water over his head.

"I've never been happier to be tired."

Rafael burst into laughter.

"You were screaming louder than the fans."

Miguel shrugged.

"We won."

"I'll scream again if I have to."

The whole team laughed.

Kai remained unusually quiet.

He sat on the grass with the match ball resting beside him.

He looked around the stadium.

The supporters were still waving flags.

Some students were chanting the team's name.

Others were taking pictures from the stands.

He smiled.

Months ago...

No one had believed San Isidro could reach this point.

Now...

They were group champions.

Coach Ramirez noticed Kai sitting alone.

He walked over and stopped beside him.

"Tired?"

Kai nodded.

"A little."

The coach smiled.

"You should be."

"You ran almost the entire match."

Kai looked at the ball.

"We're not finished yet, Coach."

Coach Ramirez chuckled.

"No."

"We're just getting started."

Meanwhile...

Outside the field...

Holy Cross Academy prepared to leave.

Adrian Castillo stopped before boarding the team bus.

He looked back toward the stadium one last time.

His vice-captain stood beside him.

"You still thinking about that pass?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"I'm thinking about Number Eleven."

"He never forced the game."

"He waited."

"And when we made one mistake..."

"...he punished us."

His teammate nodded.

"We'll meet them again someday."

Adrian looked toward the field.

"I hope so."

Near the spectator exit...

Daniel held Sofia's hand while Maria folded the school banner.

"What a match."

Maria smiled.

"I almost couldn't breathe."

Sofia grinned.

"Kuya was amazing!"

Daniel laughed softly.

"He wasn't the only one."

"The whole team deserved that win."

Just then...

A voice echoed through the stadium speakers.

"Players from both schools, please proceed to the center of the field for the post-match photo."

Kai and his teammates immediately gathered again.

Photographers hurried onto the grass.

Flashes lit up the evening sky.

One picture.

Then another.

A memory that would stay with them forever.

The final team photograph came to an end.

The players applauded one another before slowly leaving the center of the field.

Some supporters were already making their way toward the exits.

Others remained in the stands, hoping to catch one last glimpse of the team.

Kai slung his sports bag over his shoulder.

The match ball rested securely inside.

As he walked toward the tunnel, Miguel caught up beside him.

"So..."

"The winning goal."

Kai smiled.

"I couldn't have scored without your pass."

Miguel laughed.

"Still..."

"You finished it."

Rafael wrapped an arm around Kai's shoulders.

"Don't get used to the compliments."

"Next match, I'm scoring."

Kai chuckled.

"We'll see."

The three walked toward the locker room together.

Coach Ramirez stopped the team before they entered.

"Listen."

Everyone fell silent.

"You've earned today's victory."

"But tomorrow..."

"We start preparing for the knockout stage."

Several players nodded.

"There won't be easy opponents anymore."

"Every match from now on could end your tournament."

He looked at each player one by one.

"So enjoy tonight."

"Then come back ready to work."

"Understood?"

"YES, COACH!"

Their voices echoed through the tunnel.

Meanwhile...

Outside the stadium...

Most of the crowd had already left.

Daniel, Maria, and Sofia walked slowly toward the parking area.

Sofia happily skipped ahead.

"I want Kuya to sign my notebook later!"

Maria smiled.

"He'll probably be home late."

"They still have team duties."

Daniel nodded.

"They've earned it."

They continued walking without noticing the man standing several meters away.

Watching them quietly.

Arturo Villanueva remained still.

His notebook was tucked beneath one arm.

For a long moment...

He simply watched Daniel.

The years had changed his appearance.

The confident young footballer Arturo once knew now looked older.

More mature.

His clothes were simple.

His hands showed the marks of hard work.

Yet...

Arturo recognized him immediately.

He took one slow step forward.

Then another.

Finally...

He stopped.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"...It's really you."

Daniel sensed someone nearby.

He turned instinctively.

His eyes met the stranger's.

For several seconds...

Neither man spoke.

Then...

Recognition slowly appeared on Daniel's face.

His eyes widened.

"...Arturo?"

Arturo smiled.

"It's been a long time."

Daniel let out a quiet laugh filled with disbelief.

"I never thought..."

"...I'd see you again."

Maria looked between the two men.

"You know each other?"

Daniel nodded.

"We go back a long way."

Arturo gave a respectful nod.

"Hello."

"My name is Arturo Villanueva."

"I'm with the Philippine Football Federation."

Daniel's expression froze for a moment.

"The Federation?"

Arturo smiled.

"I came here to scout players."

His eyes briefly shifted toward the stadium.

"And your son..."

"...gave me every reason to come."

Daniel looked back toward the field where Kai and his teammates were still celebrating.

A proud smile slowly appeared on his face.

"I always believed he could."

Arturo nodded.

"I can see where he learned his mentality."

Daniel laughed softly.

"No."

"He built it himself."

For a moment...

The two old friends stood in comfortable silence.

Years had separated them.

Yet it felt as though only yesterday they had shared the same football pitch.

Far behind them...

Inside the stadium...

Kai remained completely unaware.

The biggest victory of his football career had ended.

But another door...

Was quietly beginning to open.
