Chapter 24: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The sun had almost disappeared beyond the mountains.

A cool evening breeze swept through the streets of San Isidro.

The excitement inside the stadium had finally faded.

One by one...

Cars, motorcycles, and tricycles left the parking area.

The football match was over.

But the smiles on the faces of San Isidro's supporters remained.

Inside the locker room...

Most of the players had already changed into their school uniforms.

The atmosphere was far more relaxed than it had been before the match.

Rafael stretched his arms and groaned.

"My whole body hurts."

Miguel laughed as he packed his boots into his sports bag.

"That means you actually worked today."

Rafael threw a towel at him.

"Oh really?"

"I seem to remember someone lying on the grass after the final whistle."

The room burst into laughter.

Miguel pointed at Kai.

"Ask him."

"He ran even more than I did."

Kai smiled awkwardly.

"I think we all ran too much."

Coach Ramirez overheard the conversation.

He couldn't help but smile.

"You'll recover."

"But don't forget..."

He looked around the room.

"This victory belongs to today."

"Tomorrow..."

"We start from zero again."

The players nodded.

No one complained.

They understood exactly what their coach meant.

One victory didn't make them champions.

There was still a long road ahead.

Assistant Coach Leo stepped forward carrying a cardboard box.

Inside were neatly folded team jerseys.

"Before anyone leaves..."

"Turn in your match jerseys."

One by one...

The players handed over their red jerseys.

Kai looked at his for a moment before folding it carefully.

It was soaked with sweat.

Grass stains covered the sleeves.

A small tear had appeared near the shoulder after one of the tackles.

Yet...

To him...

It had never looked more beautiful.

Outside the locker room...

Parents waited patiently.

Some players immediately ran toward their families.

Others laughed with classmates who had stayed behind.

The school bus was already parked nearby.

But several parents had chosen to pick up their children themselves.

Kai stepped outside carrying his sports bag.

Almost instantly...

He spotted familiar faces.

Maria waved first.

"Kai!"

Sofia jumped excitedly.

"Kuya!"

Without hesitation...

She ran straight toward him.

Kai barely had time to react before Sofia wrapped both arms around his waist.

"You were amazing!"

"I knew you'd score!"

Kai laughed and gently patted her head.

"Did you enjoy the match?"

Sofia nodded so quickly that her ponytail bounced.

"It was the best match ever!"

Maria smiled warmly as Kai walked closer.

"You must be exhausted."

Kai nodded.

"A little."

Maria looked at the bag hanging from his shoulder.

"You even brought the match ball home."

Kai smiled.

"The tournament official said I could keep it."

Sofia's eyes grew wide.

"Really?"

"Can I hold it later?"

Kai chuckled.

"Of course."

"But don't kick it around the house."

Sofia puffed her cheeks.

"I wasn't going to!"

Daniel laughed quietly.

"You were definitely thinking about it."

Sofia giggled.

"Maybe..."

The family shared a warm laugh together.

For the first time all day...

Kai felt completely relaxed.

No roaring crowd.

No pressure.

Just home.

Not far away...

Miguel walked toward them.

He smiled at Daniel before extending his hand.

"Good evening, Uncle."

Daniel shook it.

"You played well today, Captain."

Miguel scratched the back of his head.

"We all did."

He glanced at Kai.

"Take care of your striker."

"We still need him next round."

Kai laughed.

"I'm standing right here."

Miguel grinned.

"I know."

"I'm reminding your family."

Even Daniel couldn't help smiling.

"We'll make sure he gets some rest."

Miguel nodded.

"Good."

"See you tomorrow."

He waved goodbye before jogging toward his own parents.

As the stadium lights slowly dimmed...

Kai and his family began walking toward the parking area together.

Behind them...

San Isidro Municipal Stadium stood quietly once again.

The cheers...

The celebrations...

The unforgettable victory...

Had already become part of its history.

But for Kai...

He had a feeling...

His own story was only beginning.

The drive home was peaceful.

For the first time in weeks...

No one talked about tactics.

No one talked about training.

They simply enjoyed the quiet evening.

Outside the car window...

The streets of San Isidro slowly passed by.

Some people were still wearing red school shirts.

A few even recognized Kai through the window.

They smiled and waved.

Kai smiled back shyly.

"I don't think I'll ever get used to this."

Daniel chuckled from the driver's seat.

"You'd better."

"If you keep playing like today..."

"...more people will know your name."

Kai laughed awkwardly.

"I'd rather they remember San Isidro than me."

Daniel glanced at him briefly.

"That's exactly why you're becoming a better player."

A few minutes later...

They arrived home.

The familiar little house looked warm under the evening lights.

As soon as the door opened...

The delicious smell of food drifted through the air.

Kai blinked.

"Mom..."

"You cooked all this?"

Maria smiled proudly.

"It's a celebration."

"You boys earned it."

The dining table was already filled with Kai's favorite dishes.

Adobo.

Grilled fish.

Fresh vegetables.

And Sofia's favorite dessert.

Sofia immediately pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Kuya!"

"You need to eat!"

Kai laughed.

"Yes, ma'am."

Dinner was louder than usual.

Sofia excitedly acted out Kai's winning goal using a spoon as a microphone.

"And then Kuya kicked it..."

"Whoosh!"

"The goalkeeper jumped..."

"But the ball still went in!"

She raised both hands dramatically.

"GOOOOAAAL!"

The whole family burst into laughter.

Maria wiped away a tear from laughing.

"I think you've told that story five times already."

Sofia grinned.

"I can tell it ten more!"

Daniel shook his head with a smile.

"I believe you."

After dinner...

Kai carried the match ball upstairs.

His room was simple.

A small bed.

A study table.

A bookshelf.

And a few football posters on the wall.

He carefully placed the match ball on the shelf above his desk.

For a few seconds...

He simply looked at it.

It wasn't just a football anymore.

It reminded him of every sprint...

Every tackle...

Every hour he had spent training when no one was watching.

He smiled quietly.

"We're not finished yet."

A gentle knock came from the doorway.

Daniel stepped inside.

"You still awake?"

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

Daniel walked over and looked at the match ball.

"You earned that."

Kai smiled.

"It still doesn't feel real."

Daniel folded his arms.

"When I watched you today..."

"I wasn't thinking about the goal."

Kai looked up.

"I was thinking about the player you've become."

"You never stopped working."

"You never blamed your teammates."

"And even after scoring..."

"...you were the first one running back to defend."

Kai remained silent.

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I'm proud of you."

Those four words...

Meant more to Kai than all the cheers inside the stadium.

"Thanks, Dad."

Downstairs...

Maria finished washing the dishes while Sofia had already fallen asleep on the sofa.

Daniel quietly returned to the living room.

Just then...

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared on the screen.

Arturo Villanueva

> Daniel, if you're free tomorrow afternoon, I'd like to talk. There's a lot we've missed over the years.

Daniel stared at the message for several moments.

Then...

He slowly smiled.

After all these years...

An old chapter of his life was finally opening again.

He typed a short reply.

> Tomorrow is fine.

He put the phone back into his pocket and looked toward the staircase leading to Kai's room.

"So..."

"...our journeys are beginning again."

Outside...

The night grew quieter.

Inside the Bendaño home...

Peace finally settled in after an unforgettable day.

But beyond that peaceful night...

A new path was already waiting.
