Chapter 17: The Dev-Room Gate

THE GLITCHED MONARCH

The journey toward the designated coordinates of the *Hollowed Keep* took them through parts of the Whispering Woods that seemed to actively resist exploration.

As they drew closer, the environment began to exhibit severe rendering lag. Pine needles hung suspended in mid-air, frozen in the middle of falling. The snow beneath their boots occasionally lost its texture entirely, turning into flat, featureless grey polygons before snapping back into high-definition detail a second later.

"The rendering engine is struggling to keep up with this sector," Leo observed, his upgraded Intelligence scanning the fractured environment. "We are approaching a major structural boundary."

"It feels... dead," Aria whispered, her hand resting instinctively on her bow. "The ambient mana in the air is completely silent. It is as if the spirits of the forest have fled this place."

"That’s because there is no ambient mana cycle here," Leo explained. "This whole zone is an uncompiled directory. The system isn't running its usual background processes."

They stepped through a thick curtain of frozen ivy and halted.

In the center of a desolate, circular clearing stood a massive stone archway. Unlike the ancient, weathered ruins of the empire, this archway was made of perfectly smooth, featureless dark grey material that absorbed all light. It had no carvings, no runes, and no physical keyhole. It simply loomed in the silent clearing, a monument to unfinished construction.

Hovering inside the archway was a flat, flickering plane of static—like a television screen tuned to a dead channel, buzzing with erratic black and white pixels.

```
[System Notification: Corrupted Instance Boundary]
-> Destination: Instance_0 (Unfinished Dev Environment)
-> Status: SEALED / OFFLINE
-> Spatial Stability: 12% (CRITICAL)
```

"This is it," Leo said, stepping up to the edge of the static. The air near the boundary smelled of dry paper and ozone. "The entrance to the pre-system test environment."

"It looks... wrong," Aria said, her eyes reflecting the erratic white flicker of the barrier. "My instincts are screaming at me to run. If we step into that static, will we even remain whole?"

"Under normal physics? No. Your physical model would probably be torn apart by the coordinate desync," Leo said calmly. He reached into his spatial ring and pulled out the triangular violet crystal key he had looted from Julian. "But that's what this is for."

He held the key toward the archway. The crystal immediately resonated with the static, pulsing with a bright, violet light that began to organize the chaotic white pixels into a stable, spinning vortex of dark purple energy.

```
[Boundary Bypass Key: Detected]
-> Authenticating...
-> Status: Admin Key Bypass Accepted
-> Opening Local Instance Portal...
```

The static parted, revealing a dark, silent corridor made of the same smooth grey material as the arch.

"The gate is open," Leo said, turning to Aria. "But once we step through, the system will seal the instance behind us to prevent the corruption from leaking back into the world map. We won't be able to rely on standard exit routes."

Aria looked back at the dark, snowy forest behind them, where the House of Vermis would soon be hunting for their missing heir. Then she looked at Leo, whose eyes were filled with absolute, fearless confidence.

She smiled, her grip tightening on her bow. "The world out here has nothing left for me anyway. Let's go."

"That's what I like to hear," Leo grinned.

He took a step forward, crossing the threshold. Aria followed right at his heels, and the moment their heels cleared the archway, the violet vortex collapsed behind them, sealing them inside the forgotten depths of the system's oldest playground.
