Chapter 18: The Greybox

THE GLITCHED MONARCH

The world inside the gate didn’t just look unfinished; it looked like a structural layout before the decorators had arrived.

There was no sky. Instead, a colossal, infinite grid of glowing white wireframe lines stretched overhead, mapping out a sterile, pitch-black void. The ground beneath their boots was made of uniform, matte-grey blocks, completely devoid of snow, dirt, or grass. In the distance, floating cubes, sphere-render tests, and half-formed stone pillars hovered suspended in the air, drifting lazily as if gravity were merely a suggested variable.

```
[System Alert: Entering Instance_0]
-> Zone Classification: Sandbox_Testing_Grounds (Deprecated)
-> Physics Engine Status: Uncompiled / Legacy Mode
-> Warning: Collision boundaries in this sector are highly unstable.
```

"What is this place?" Aria whispered, her voice echoing unnaturally in the vast, empty space. She reached out to touch a nearby pillar, but her fingers passed straight through the outer two inches of the stone before hitting a solid, invisible barrier. "The stone... it's like a ghost."

"That’s because the collision mesh doesn't match the visual asset," Leo said, his eyes gleaming as he took in the environment. To his upgraded QA brain, this place was beautiful. "The developer who made this probably dragged and dropped the visual model but forgot to scale the physical hitbox to match. It’s a classic lazy dev mistake."

He pulled up his Sandbox Engine console. Here, in this uncompiled zone, the interface didn't just hover in front of him—it integrated seamlessly with the environment. Massive streams of green system code drifted down the sides of the grey pillars like digital ivy.

```
-> Warning: Writing unauthorized code to local sectors may cause severe coordinate desync.
```

"Look over there," Aria said, pointing toward a massive platform at the center of the grid.

Sitting on the platform was a giant, humanoid figure. It stood completely rigid, its arms stretched out straight to its sides in a stiff, horizontal "T" shape. It had no face, no clothing, and no textures—just a blank, white plaster-like body that stood nearly twelve feet tall.

```
[Target Analysis: Target_Dummy_Alpha (LVL 20)]
[HP: 9,999 / 9,999]
[Status: Idle / T-Pose Calibration State]
```

"A Level 20 testing dummy," Leo muttered, his eyes widening. "And look at its HP pool. Nearly ten thousand health."

"Level twenty?" Aria’s hand flew to her bow. "Leo, if that thing wakes up—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the white figure’s head snapped toward them with a sickening, plastic screech. Its limbs remained locked in the rigid T-pose, but its entire body began to slide across the grey floor toward them at a terrifying velocity, moving without any running animation.

It was gliding across the coordinates like a chess piece pushed by an invisible hand.

```
[Combat State: Initiated]
-> Enemy: Target_Dummy_Alpha [Aggro Locked on Player: Leo Vermis]
-> Speed: 15.0m/s
```

"It’s tracking my coordinates directly!" Leo shouted, his fingers already flying across his holographic keyboard. "Because it doesn't have an animation tree compiled, it doesn't need to walk—it's just updating its position vector every frame!"

"I'll slow it down!" Aria cried, pulling back her bow.

She let fly a violet-and-blue mana arrow. The projectile streaked through the sterile void, striking the giant dummy dead-center in its chest.

*Clang!*

The arrow shattered against the plaster skin, leaving a glowing blue "MISSING TEXTURE" warning box where the impact should have registered damage.

```
[Combat Log]
-> Aria's Arrow hits Target_Dummy_Alpha.
-> Damage registered: 0 (Invulnerable State Active).
-> Reason: Object is flagged as 'Static_Testing_Asset'.
```

"My magic didn't touch it!" Aria gasped, backing away as the massive, T-posing figure closed the distance, its rigid, outstretched arms acting like a giant battering ram.

"It's set to invulnerable because it’s a calibration asset!" Leo yelled, his 29 Intelligence calculating the math in microseconds. "Normal attacks won't do anything. We have to interact with its properties directly!"

He swiped his hand downward, bringing up the dummy's raw coordinate data sheet.

```
[Object: Target_Dummy_Alpha]
-> Position: Vector3(12.4, 0.0, 45.2)
-> Mass: 2,500kg
-> Velocity: Vector3(-15.0, 0.0, 0.0)
```

"If I can't damage your health," Leo smirked, his eyes locking onto the incoming giant, "then I'll just change your mass."

He highlighted the Mass variable and dialed it from 2500kg down to 0.0001g. Then, he located the Friction value of the dummy's base and set it to 999.0.

The transformation was instantaneous.

The giant, T-posing dummy, now lighter than a speck of dust but moving at fifteen meters per second, suddenly hit the ultra-high friction value Leo had injected onto its base.

Because it had zero mass to combat the sudden friction, the physics engine threw a massive calculation error. The dummy didn't just stop—it exploded upward into the wireframe sky like a rocket, spinning wildly on all three axes as the physics coordinator tried and failed to calculate how a feather-weight object could retain that much kinetic energy.

```
[System Exception: Physics Overflow]
-> Entity 'Target_Dummy_Alpha' velocity exceeded safe limits.
-> Force-Ejecting Entity from Local Instance...
```

With a distant, digital *pop*, the twelve-foot plaster giant vanished into the dark wireframe sky, completely booted from the map's active memory.

Silence returned to the sterile greybox.

Aria slowly lowered her bow, her mouth slightly agape as she stared up at the empty grid overhead. "You... you threw it into the sky. It didn't even fight."

"It got garbage-collected," Leo laughed, dusting off his hands as the console closed. "And now that the security guard is out of the way, let’s see what kind of unfinished treasures the developers left lying around in the backrooms."
