The heavy ring of battle slowly faded into the crisp morning air, leaving behind a silence so absolute you could hear the soft, rhythmic hum of the Golden Lotus resting against my chest. Smoke curled up from the shattered courtyard iron, drifting out toward the river as the first pale light of sunrise broke over the city horizon.

Fifty masks lay abandoned across the concrete floor of the Navy Yard compound, shattered and still. Not a single assassin remained standing.

"Perimeter clear," Neak called out, lowering his wooden staff with a slow, controlled exhale. He turned to look back at the hall, his eyes sweeping over the line of fighters. "No breaches on the east wall."Full novel: The Golden Lotus — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Beside him, my sister Nimol wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, her iron pipe resting against her shoulder. "They won't be sending another wave anytime soon. That was their main vanguard."

In the center of the hall, my three children were still standing in their interlocking Boran triangle. Kiri lowered his long arms, his chest rising and falling in deep, even cycles. Sorya immediately turned to inspect Channya’s shoulder, ensuring her sister hadn't sustained any quiet injuries during the chaos, while Channya gave her an affectionate nudge, pointing toward Kiri's unblemished guard.

"We held," Kiri said, his voice deep and steady as he looked at me. "Just like Grandpa taught us."

"You did more than hold," I said, stepping toward them as the amber radiance of the Lotus gradually softened, settling into a gentle, constant glow. "You fought as one. All of you."

Behind them, the rest of the generation began to regroup. Sophea and Bopha were helping Rath and Neary check the outer window locks, while Arun anchored the western corridor with Veicha's kids, Dara and Devi. Over near the inner vault, Vannak walked out with nine-year-old Samnang riding high on his shoulders. The boy’s eyes were wide, taking in the dawn light spilling across the wooden floor where three generations of his family had just stood as an unbroken wall.

Nimol walked up beside me, her gaze fixing on the Golden Lotus. "The relic didn't just give us power today. It resonated with the Boran form. It felt like... like the elders were standing right behind us in the guard."

"They were," I replied softly, looking down at the ancient artifact. "Grandma Dary and Grandpa Kiri survived the killing fields, built a life from nothing in a new land, and passed down every strike and stance so we would never be helpless. The Lotus didn't choose me because I was strong. It chose our family because we refuse to leave anyone behind."

Neak stepped up to join us, resting a hand on my shoulder as the entire family gathered in a wide circle around the center of the hall. Sorya, Channya, and Kiri stood at my right; Sophea, Bopha, Rath, and Neary at my left; Arun, Dara, Devi, Vanna, and young Samnang completing the ring.

The city outside was still broken, scarred by rifts and filled with unknown dangers lurking in the mist beyond the river. But as the golden light of the sun met the warm glow of the Lotus, casting long, triumphant shadows across the compound, one truth remained absolute.

No matter what threats emerged from the dark, our bloodline would meet them together—unbroken, unyielding, and whole.
