The sun climbed higher over the East River, turning the sky a dusty pink. Inside the compound, while the kids took up watches along the perimeter, Neak, Nimol, and I sat near the inner vault. I unclasped the Golden Lotus, setting it gently on the wooden low table between us.

In the quiet morning air, its petals pulsed with a soft, steady rhythm—like a heart beating beneath deep water.

"It’s time they knew the whole truth," Nimol said softly, glancing toward the courtyard where Kiri, Sorya, and Channya were running the younger cousins through their morning footwork drills. "About 1975."Full novel: The Golden Lotus — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"They know she fled," Neak said, his hands resting on his knees. "They know she and Kiri survived the march out of Phnom Penh. But they don't know about the cave near the Cardamom Mountains."

I reached out, resting my fingers near the base of the Lotus. As my skin brushed the cold metal, a surge of vivid, memory-like warmth bloomed in my mind, echoing the story Grandma Dary had whispered to me on the night before she passed.

April 1975.

The sky above the countryside was choked with black smoke, and the roads were filled with thousands of families forced out of the cities. Dary was young then, her hands already calloused from days of brutal travel, her feet bloody against the rough dirt paths. Beside her walked Kiri, his broad shoulders already bearing the heavy pack containing everything they owned in the world.

When the regime's soldiers split the column near the forest edge, panic erupted. Shots echoed through the trees. Dary and Kiri dove into the dense jungle, dragging her younger siblings through the thick foliage until the shouts faded into the distance.

Lost in the unfamiliar wilderness of the mountain foothills, night fell fast and heavy. Rain began to pour, turning the earth into mud. Seeking shelter, Kiri spotted an overgrown opening in the limestone cliffside—a ancient, half-buried shrine covered in thick vines and ancient moss.

Inside, protected from the storm, was a forgotten sanctuary. Resting atop a decaying stone pedestal was the Golden Lotus.

It wasn't a man-made relic of gold and jewels. It was something older—an ancient core of energy that had rested deep beneath the soil for centuries. When Dary approached it, seeking warmth for her shivering family, the artifact didn't flare with weaponized light. It glowed with a soft, protective amber, wrapping around the small cave and shielding their signatures from the patrols searching the jungle outside.

As Dary reached out to touch its petals, a deep, resonant voice echoed in her mind—not in words, but in pure intent: What do you seek to preserve?

Dary didn't ask for wealth, or power, or safety for herself alone. She looked back at Kiri, who was standing guard at the cave entrance with a wooden branch in hand, and at her siblings huddled in the dry corner.

"My family," young Dary had whispered into the dark, her voice steady despite her fear. "Every single one of them. We leave no one behind."

The Lotus accepted her vow. It bound itself to her bloodline, recognizing a spirit strong enough to carry its weight through the dark ages ahead. But as the regime closed in the following morning, Dary knew the relic was too powerful, too dangerous to carry openly through the checkpoints. To protect her family and the relic's existence, she sealed the Lotus deep within the shrine's inner chamber, changing her own public name and leading her family across the border into Thailand, carrying only the relic's promise in her heart.

She knew that one day, when the world broke open again and her lineage was ready, the Lotus would find its way back to her blood.

I pulled my hand back from the Lotus, the memory fading into the bright morning light of Brooklyn.

"She carried that secret for fifty years," I said softly, looking up at Neak and Nimol. "She learned Boran to protect us physically, but she kept her faith in the Lotus so we would be ready when the dark returned."

Neak smiled, a rare, warm expression that reached his eyes. "And now it's here. In Brooklyn, with her grandchildren."

Out in the courtyard, a clear voice echoed as my son Kiri called out a Boran transition count, followed by the synchronized, thunderous thud of twenty feet striking the floor in unison.

The Lotus on the table glowed brighter, humming in perfect harmony with the footsteps of the generation Grandma Dary had saved.
