Kaelen sat cross-legged directly on the snout of the fallen Shadow Dragon, his obsidian blade resting across his lap. His veins still prickled with residual static, a strange sensation like thousands of tiny needles pricking his skin from the inside out. His core was empty, but as it slowly drew in the ambient violet mana of the abyss, the energy began to change. The pure azure spark was no longer alone; faint, twisting tendrils of dark violet void-mana were beginning to weave into his spiritual center.
He was assimilating the beast’s affinity. *Dual resonance.*
"You're completely out of your mind," Jax said, his voice flat as he walked up, kicking a stray shard of shattered purple crystal out of his path. He stopped and stared up at Kaelen, then at the massive, breathing mountain of violet scales beneath the prince. "You could have turned into a pile of ash. We all could have."
"But we didn't," Kaelen said, opening one eye and flashing his characteristic, soot-stained grin. "And look on the bright side, Jax. We just found a shortcut to the upper valleys."
Sylvia approached silently, her footsteps making no sound on the calcified floor. The oppressive drag on her shadow-magic had completely vanished. In fact, her own shadows seemed deeper now, extending further and mimicking the erratic, jagged movements of the dragon's webbed wings.
"The Vanguard is secured, Captain," she reported, her amber eyes scanning the dark horizon of the subterranean world. "Goran has organized the perimeter. The men... they aren't just loyal anymore. They think you're an immortal deity."
"Let them think what they want, as long as they keep their shields up," Kaelen sighed, sliding off the dragon's snout and landing gracefully on his feet. The beast let out a low, vibrating purr that rattled the loose gravel around them, its six violet eye-slits tracking his every movement with complete docility. Kaelen patted its massive, skeletal jaw. "I'm naming you Kuro. Try not to eat any of the scouts."
He turned back toward the center of the crystalline cavern. Now that the violet fog had cleared, the true geometry of the underworld was visible. The colossal purple crystals weren't random; they formed a perfect circle around a massive, stone-carved dais at the very center of the abyss.
Etched into the surface of the dais was a sprawling, ancient map of the surface kingdoms—but it showed pathways, tunnels, and hidden fault lines that didn't exist on any imperial registry.
Kaelen walked up the stone steps, his hand resting on the pommel of his blade. He traced a line on the stone map that led straight from their current position in the abyss, bypassed the border garrisons entirely, and emerged directly underneath the mountain peaks of the western territories.
"The Sky-Crest Citadel," Sylvia said, leaning over the stone map beside him. Her fingers traced the precipice where the rogue kingdom sat, thousands of feet above the canyons. "They control the entire western trade route. The Empire has tried to siege them four times, but their wind-magic riders shred any army that tries to climb the cliffs."
"The Empire tries to climb up," Kaelen murmured, his blue eyes flashing with a dangerous, calculating light as he looked at the hidden tunnel on the map that led straight into the Citadel's cellars. "They never think to look down."
He turned around, looking out over his five hundred armored warriors, their obsidian plates gleaming under the faint violet light of the underworld. They were tired, caked in dirt, and miles away from the sun—but their eyes were fixed on him, waiting for the command.
Kaelen drew his blade, the amber vein pulsing with a brand-new, violet-tinted lightning current.
"Pack your kits," Kaelen called out, his voice echoing through the massive cavern. "We're going to go pay a visit to the lords of the wind. And we're bringing a storm they won't see coming."
