The lords of the Sky-Crest Citadel prided themselves on their vision. From their gleaming white stone towers perched on a sheer, six-thousand-foot precipice, their eagle-eyed scouts could see an approaching army three days before it reached the valley floor. Their wind-mages could whip up localized gales capable of throwing heavy cavalry off the cliffs, and their griffin-riding wind-riders ruled the clouds.
They were looking out. They were looking up.
They weren't looking at the sun.
"Report!" the High-Commander of the Citadel's aerial guard bellowed, adjusting his brass spyglass as a strange, unnatural chill suddenly settled over the mountain peak. "Is there a storm rolling in from the western seas?"
"No, Commander," a scout stammered, his face turning pale as he stared up into the cloudless afternoon sky. "The sun... something is swallowing the sun."
It wasn't a cloud. It was a massive, swirling vortex of absolute purple-black emptiness that had suddenly manifested directly above the Citadel. The daylight began to rapidly bleed away, replaced by an eerie, suffocating twilight.
And then, out of the center of the artificial eclipse, it dropped.
*ROOOOOOOAR—*
The sound wasn't a standard beast's cry; it was a screeching tear in the fabric of the atmosphere. The Shadow Dragon, Kuro, dove straight through the vortex, his eighty-foot span of webbed shadow-wings tightly folded against his serpentine, violet-scaled body.
Perched right between the dragon’s skeletal shoulder blades was Kaelen. His dark hair was whipped wildly by the wind, his hand firmly gripping the hilt of his black obsidian blade.
"Jax! Goran! Clear the landing zone!" Kaelen shouted over the roaring wind.
Riding behind him on the dragon’s broad back, Jax looked ready to violently lose his stomach, while Goran let out a manic, booming laugh, tightly gripping his six-foot drake-bone axe.
"To arms! To arms!" the Citadel's alarm bells shrieked, their metallic clanging echoing frantically off the stone walls. "The griffin riders! Launch the—"
Before the first squadron of wind-riders could even clear their high-tower roosts, Kuro flared his six massive wings, violently braking in mid-air directly over the Citadel's grand courtyard. The sheer displacement of air—infused with heavy, high-density void-mana—slammed into the white stone towers, shattering the delicate glass windows and throwing the defending archers off their feet.
"Go!" Kaelen yelled.
Goran didn't wait. The northern giant leaped straight off the dragon’s back from thirty feet in the air, falling like a meteoric boulder.
*BOOM!*
Goran landed heavily on his feet, his new obsidian plates easily absorbing the impact while the stone tiles beneath his boots shattered into dust. He swung his massive drake-bone axe in a wide, horizontal arc, the sheer physical force sending five armored Citadel guards flying across the courtyard like ragdolls.
"Hold the gates!" Jax yelled, following Goran down with a pair of short, iron-scale swords drawn, his usual anxiety completely replaced by the razor-sharp muscle memory of a survivor.
Up in the sky, forty griffin riders finally managed to launch, circling like angry hornets as they dove toward the massive shadow-beast. Their riders chanted ancient wind-incantations, unleashing jagged lances of compressed air that shot through the sky like crossbow bolts.
"Kuro," Kaelen whispered, his eyes flashing a volatile mix of azure lightning and violet dark. "They think they own the sky. Let's show them who rules the void."
The Shadow Dragon opened its skeletal maw and let out a low, vibrating hum.
*ANTI-MAGIC VACUUM.*
An invisible wave of absolute emptiness rippled outward from the beast. The moment it hit the approaching griffin riders, the compressed air lances instantly dissolved into harmless drafts. Worse, the wind-magic keeping the heavy griffins aloft was violently ripped out of the sky. The beasts shrieked in panic as their wings suddenly found no resistance in the dead air, sending the entire first squadron into a chaotic, tumbling freefall.
Kaelen unclipped his boots from the saddle. He didn't drop down to join Goran on the ground. Instead, he leaped *into* the swarm of falling riders.
In mid-air, he drew the obsidian sword.
*SHING.*
The blade didn't just crackle with electricity anymore. The blue lightning was tightly wrapped in a twisting, violent outer sheath of violet shadow-mana—the fruits of his dual resonance.
He locked eyes with the leader of the aerial guard, who was desperately trying to stabilize his plunging griffin. Kaelen channeled a burst of high-frequency lightning from his boots, creating a localized kinetic explosion that literally launched him through the air like a human railgun.
He blurred across the sky.
A microsecond later, Kaelen landed gracefully on the back of the commander's griffin, his black blade resting directly against the man's throat. The azure-violet static humming from the steel was so hot it was literally charring the collar of the commander's silver armor without even touching it.
The griffin stopped thrashing, completely paralyzed by the terrifying aura of the dragon hovering right above them.
The entire sky over the Sky-Crest Citadel went dead silent, save for the frantic panting of the surviving guards below.
Kaelen leaned in close, his face caked in soot and wind-ash, but his signature, cocky smirk completely intact as he looked into the commander's terrified eyes.
"Nice view you guys have up here," Kaelen murmured, his voice easily carrying through the quiet air. "Now, go tell your Lord that Prince Kaelen is moving in. And I don't pay rent."
