The notice reached every outer-court wall before sunrise.

ANNUAL OUTER SECT COMPETITION By the fourth bell, arguments over algorithm cultivation had narrowed to one question: who would win.

Rank decided spirit stones, training access, and eight inner-court evaluation names.Full novel: The Heavenly Algorithm — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

His name appeared near the bottom of the registration board.

LIN FAN Beside it burned a narrow red seal.

ELIGIBILITY: CONDITIONAL Cao Jin stared at the words as if they had insulted his ancestors.

“I hate that word.” “It is accurate,” Lin Fan said.

“It means three halls can remove you whenever someone coughs in the wrong direction.” Wei Kang read the attached restrictions.

“It does not.” Cao Jin looked at him.

“You appear whenever I am technically wrong.” “You provide frequent opportunities.” Three recording crystals faced Arena Four.

The match had an audience before it had an opponent.

Behind Lin Fan, Bai Ming held his seventeenth induction record against his chest.

Huo Yan and Sun Yu stood beside him.

None could represent algorithm cultivation in the arena.

Huo Yan noticed him looking.

“If you lose, the Fire Yard will call my result a meditation-room accident.” “One fight cannot invalidate your record.” “Tell them that after you fall.” She nodded toward the Fire Yard stands.

“See if they listen.” Bai Ming asked, “Will seventeen become impossible again?” “No.” An audit clerk handed him a black token with three unlit seals.

It forbade unapproved branches and sent the full combat record to a joint three-hall review.

Shared control touched an old fear: a board had once removed his access to HEAVEN-01 while the system continued without him.

Inside his mind, HEAVEN-01 said: Physiological stress response detected.

“I know.” Current arrangement differs from prior revocation.

Your authorship and failures remain recorded.

He had chosen this arrangement.

That made the fear bearable.

Lin Fan pressed his thumb to the token.

The first seal mark lit.

“Submit everything,” he said.

Su Li took the rail above Arena Four instead of the sheltered observer’s alcove.

Her token remained visible.

“Most paths close before the twentieth exchange,” she told Lin Fan.

“You could watch from farther away.” “I could.” She did not move.

Elder Mo opened the audit case.

“Alter your own decisions, not your opponent.

If your observation fails, the failure enters the record.” “Agreed.” The draw board turned.

Lin Fan’s name appeared last.

LIN FAN ZHOU TAI Noise crossed the field.

An East Yard disciple laughed.

“Efficiency in a meditation room does not stop a fist.” Sun Yu spoke over him.

“Body Tempering, Third Stage.

Stone-Driving Fist.

Thirteen practice victories.” Zhou Tai entered unarmed, shorter than Lin Fan expected and nearly twice as broad.

Earth-colored qi moved beneath his skin in dense waves.

When he saw Lin Fan, he laughed—not cruelly, but with relief.

“I thought they might give me a sword cultivator.” Zhou Tai rolled his shoulders.

“I watched your three moves with Senior Brother Zhao.” “Then you possess more combat data on me than I possess on you.” “Good.” The referee raised one hand.

“Ring-out, surrender, or inability to continue.

No strikes to the eyes, throat, dantian, or spiritual root.” Zhou Tai lowered into stance.

Earth qi thickened around his forearms.

“One question,” he said.

“Can your algorithm tell you how much this will hurt?” The referee dropped his hand.

Zhou Tai crossed the opening distance before the cloth at his sleeves had settled.

No body that broad should have moved so fast.

The first fist passed where Lin Fan’s chest had been.

The second arrived before the first fully retracted, cutting off his escape to the right.

Lin Fan blocked.

Pain exploded through his forearm and drove him three steps sideways.

The boundary formation shivered behind him.

Zhou Tai’s heel ground against the stone, already turning the recoil into another step.

His blocked arm shuddered all the way to the shoulder.

Zhou Tai read the tremor and attacked that side again, giving Lin Fan no time to reset.

The follow-up crashed into Lin Fan’s guard before his elbow had reset.

His teeth snapped together.

He recovered one foot, then lost it again beneath Zhou Tai’s pressure.

The crowd shouted.

Zhou Tai did not pause.

Right fist.

Left.

Short elbow.

Forward step.

The sequence came with brutal economy, each impact claiming another pace of stone.

Lin Fan retreated.

Inside his mind, HEAVEN-01 recorded movement, timing, force, and qi distribution.

Impact estimate exceeds preferred tolerance.

“Useful.” Your definition of useful remains concerning.

Lin Fan tried to cut through the center before the next combination formed.

Zhou Tai did not chase.

He closed the lane with one shoulder and buried a short hook beneath Lin Fan’s guard.

Air vanished from Lin Fan’s lungs.

Zhou Tai struck his guard again.

Lin Fan’s wrist folded against his chest, and the next blow grazed his temple before he twisted clear.

White light flared at the edge of his vision.

Zhou Tai followed the stumble.

He did not chase Lin Fan’s head; he attacked the space Lin Fan needed to recover, forcing him toward the boundary one step at a time.

“That is the algorithm?” someone shouted.

“He is only running.” “Zhou Tai will throw him out in ten breaths.” Another blow struck Lin Fan’s guard and sent pain through both elbows.

The boundary light flashed at the edge of his sight, close enough that the crowd’s laughter sharpened into anticipation.

Cao Jin shouted something obscene at the eastern stands.

Huo Yan did not.

Her eyes followed each impact.

Bai Ming’s fingers creased the edge of his seventeenth record, and Sun Yu leaned forward as though he could hold Lin Fan inside the ring by refusing to blink.

Lin Fan felt every face behind him become weight.

He stopped listening.

He stopped watching Zhou Tai’s fists and found the attack lower down.

Foot, knee, hip, shoulder, arm.

The sequence changed, but every strike still climbed from the ground.

Zhou Tai attacked again.

Lin Fan moved left.

The fist followed.

He moved right.

Zhou Tai corrected.

Zhou Tai was changing with him, yet each correction forced the larger disciple to reset his balance before committing again.

Lin Fan let three corrections pass.

On the fourth redirection, the earth qi around Zhou Tai’s right leg dimmed for less than half a heartbeat.

Zhou Tai changed tempo on the next exchange.

He paused where Lin Fan expected movement, watched him commit, then swept a forearm through the escape lane.

Lin Fan ducked, but the shoulder behind it clipped him.

Zhou Tai stepped in.

Lin Fan did not retreat.

The change broke the rhythm, but Zhou Tai shortened the punch into an elbow before Lin Fan could enter cleanly.

The point of Zhou Tai’s elbow scraped his shoulder and spun him half around.

Zhou Tai adapted too quickly to become a solved problem.

Lin Fan ducked beneath it and touched two fingers to Zhou Tai’s ribs.

The crowd laughed.

Zhou Tai looked offended.

“Was that supposed to hurt?” “No.” The touch confirmed what Lin Fan had glimpsed during the fourth redirection.

Protection was traveling with the attack instead of covering the whole body at once.

Zhou Tai attacked.

Lin Fan stopped blocking.

A fist passed close enough to pull air across his cheek.

He slipped behind the reinforced arm and drove his knuckles into the ribs the qi had just abandoned.

Zhou Tai grunted.

Not enough damage.

Enough information.

They circled.

Lin Fan still retreated more than he attacked, but Zhou Tai was no longer driving him anywhere.

A shoulder, the ribs, the outer thigh—none of Lin Fan’s strikes were strong, and all of them landed.

Each touch left a brief interruption in the earth-light before Zhou Tai forced it back into place.

Zhou Tai feinted low, caught Lin Fan moving toward the expected gap, and hammered a forearm into his chest.

Lin Fan lost his breath and nearly lost the ring with it.

His heel stopped a finger’s width from the boundary light.

Zhou Tai did not follow the stagger.

He waited until Lin Fan looked toward the moving gap, then shifted the qi again without throwing the strike.

Lin Fan stepped away before the follow-up arrived.

The qi had a pattern.

Zhou Tai did not have to obey it.

The laughter died.

An instructor in the East Yard stand stopped explaining and started watching.

Zhou Tai’s breathing deepened.

“Stop touching me.” “Stop moving the opening.” “I do not leave openings.” “You relocate them.” Huo Yan’s head lifted.

The Fire Yard had laughed when she made her flame smaller.

Now the watching instructors had stopped laughing.

Zhou Tai’s face hardened.

He rushed.

This time, the earth qi spread through both arms, chest, shoulders, and legs at once.

The East Yard stands erupted.

“Stone Body!” “He forced Zhou Tai to use Stone Body in the first round.” Lin Fan’s model failed immediately.

[RESOURCE ALLOCATION PATTERN: CHANGED] [LOCAL OPENING MODEL: INVALID] Zhou Tai struck.

Lin Fan blocked once, and the force drove him backward so hard his heels scraped sparks from the stone.

His heels left two white lines across the arena.

His elbows opened under the impact, and Zhou Tai stepped into the space before Lin Fan could rebuild his guard.

Zhou Tai’s right foot slammed down to carry the next blow.

The armor over his leg stayed solid.

The fist arrived before Lin Fan could reset.

The second strike caught his shoulder.

Pain numbed his left hand.

His fingers opened without permission.

Zhou Tai noticed and shifted left, cutting off the side of the ring Lin Fan’s good hand could still protect.

When Zhou Tai withdrew, his right foot dragged a finger’s width before resetting.

The third stopped against his crossed arms with the boundary formation flashing behind him.

Stone Body had erased the moving gaps and turned every exchange into a contest Lin Fan’s body could not afford.

Zhou Tai drove in again.

Lin Fan pivoted, but a reinforced shoulder clipped his ribs and sent him skidding.

Boundary light rose at his back, close enough to warm his robe.

He had room for one retreat, perhaps two.

Zhou Tai saw it too and widened his stance, closing both angles instead of rushing.

Cao Jin stopped shouting as Su Li gripped the balcony rail.

She did not step back from the place where every witness could see her.

Elder Mo leaned forward for the first time.

Zhou Tai smiled through heavy breath.

“You found where I moved the armor.” “Yes.” “So I stopped moving it.” “Yes.” “Found the limit.” Inside Lin Fan’s mind, HEAVEN-01 answered: No validated response available.

Additional samples required.

Then another possibility surfaced: a faster transfer through Lin Fan’s left meridian, outside the branch approved for tournament use.

It might restore enough speed to escape the next charge.

It might also turn the numbness in his hand into a damaged pathway.

The black audit token pulsed once beneath his sash.

Only his own seal was lit.

Unvalidated circulation adjustment available.

Authorization unavailable.

The token struck his hip again.

Beyond the boundary light, Bai Ming still held the creased seventeenth record to his chest.

Huo Yan stood under the Fire Yard banner, her bare hands closed at her sides.

If Lin Fan crossed the line now, the victory might be his.

The doubt it created would belong to all of them.

The adjustment could disappear inside the violence.

The crowd would never know.

The archive would.

HEAVEN-01 would.

He would.

“Keep the approved route,” Lin Fan said inside his mind.

“Record the refusal.” Recorded.

The token stopped pulsing.

HEAVEN-01 gave him no winning action after that.

It gave him only the boundary of what it knew.

Zhou Tai stepped in.

Lin Fan raised the numbed arm anyway.

Pain dragged from wrist to collarbone; his approved circulation remained slow, exposed, and intact.

“Not yet,” Lin Fan said.

Zhou Tai gathered his whole body behind one final charge.

Stone Body sealed every opening.

It did not make Zhou Tai weightless.

Zhou Tai launched forward.

His right foot struck stone.

Earth-light folded at his knee, and the joint dipped before catching his weight.

Lin Fan moved forward.

The entire field shouted.

Zhou Tai’s right fist descended.

Lin Fan stepped inside the arc and drove his heel against the outside of the supporting knee—not hard enough to damage the joint, but at the instant it accepted everything.

The knee buckled.

Zhou Tai’s upper body continued forward.

Lin Fan caught the sleeve with one hand and guided the shoulder with the other.

His left fingers failed to close.

He hooked the fabric across his palm instead, keeping the grip only long enough to turn Zhou Tai’s chest past the line.

Lin Fan did not throw him.

He turned the shoulder and let Zhou Tai’s own momentum finish the action.

Zhou Tai crossed the boundary headfirst.

The formation caught him before he struck the ground.

Silence lasted less than a breath.

Then Arena Four exploded.

The referee stared at the line, then at Lin Fan.

“Winner—Lin Fan.” Cao Jin’s shout rose above the entire East Yard.

“Illegal knee strike!” someone protested from the stands.

Other voices joined it.

The same disciples who had called Lin Fan harmless now called the result dangerous.

Wei Kang touched the recording array.

Light rose above the arena, showing Lin Fan’s heel, Zhou Tai’s reinforcement, and the exact moment of contact.

“Legal target,” he said.

“No joint damage.

No unregistered circulation branch detected.” The protest continued until Elder Mo closed the audit case.

“The strike was legal.

The result stands.” An East Yard representative kept one hand raised.

“We request a post-match review.

Repeatedly loading a reinforced support joint may qualify as dangerous exploitation under Stone Body rules.” Elder Mo looked to Wei Kang.

“Enter the request.

Unless the review finds prohibited force or injury, the result stands.” One red review mark remained beside Lin Fan’s victory when the replay faded.

The East Yard did not fall quiet.

Instructors bent over the replay while their disciples argued beneath them, and the red mark remained visible above every voice.

Zhou Tai climbed back onto the platform under his own power.

His face was red, and his right leg shook once before it steadied.

Anger tightened his mouth, but he looked at the replay instead of the crowd.

“You did not overpower me,” he said.

“No.” “You did not break Stone Body.” “No.” “You made me pay for using it everywhere.” “Yes.” Zhou Tai rubbed the outside of his knee, then laughed once.

“I hate the way you talk.” “That also seems common.” Zhou Tai bowed, but did not leave.

“Do not use me as proof that your road is right.” “I won’t.” “Use me again when the next review begins.

I’ll change the way I reinforce.

If you only won because I repeated myself, I want that recorded too.” Lin Fan looked toward the three-sealed audit token.

“Only under supervised testing.” “Fine.” Elder Mo spoke from above.

“Instruction Hall will witness it.” Zhou Tai nodded.

As he stepped down, Huo Yan faced the Fire Yard instructors.

“You laughed when I made the flame smaller.” She watched Zhou Tai’s armor fade.

“Laugh now.” No one answered before Wei Kang touched the official array.

The official record wall changed.

ALGORITHM CULTIVATION — PUBLIC COMBAT RECORD: 1 OUTCOME: VERIFIED METHOD STATUS: PROVISIONAL Bai Ming loosened his grip and carefully smoothed the crease in his seventeenth record.

Wei Kang handed Lin Fan the sealed combat record.

“Left arm function: seventy-eight percent.

Three clean impacts.

Ring-out victory after model failure.” “Submit all of it.” Inside Lin Fan’s mind, HEAVEN-01 completed the record.

[COMBAT DATASET UPDATED] [OPPONENT RESPONSE PATTERN: PARTIAL] Then: [COMBAT PATTERN DETECTED] [OPTIMIZATION AVAILABLE] [APPLICATION AUTHORITY: JOINT REVIEW REQUIRED] A few weeks earlier, Lin Fan would have opened the result immediately.

This time, he pressed the black token to the record and submitted it unopened.

The other two seal marks remained dark.

Deacon Qiu reached for Lin Fan’s arm.

Before the healer’s fingers touched him, the bronze draw board turned again.

SECOND ROUND — ARENA TWO The second name belonged to a Northern Yard sword cultivator whose first match had ended in three cuts.

ASSEMBLY: THIRTY MINUTES Lin Fan tried to lift his left hand.

Two fingers answered late.

The optimization remained sealed.

The sword cultivator was already walking toward Arena Two.
