By the quarterfinals, no one called Lin Fan’s victories accidents.

They found other words.

Dishonorable.

Brilliant.

Cowardly.

Impossible.

The word depended mostly on whether the speaker had wagered against him.

Four days had passed since the rain-soaked fight with Han Rui.

Deacon Qiu removed the splint that morning, but Lin Fan’s two smallest fingers still carried a faint numbness.

Qiu cleared him only after making him demonstrate that he could release a grip before the hand locked.

The Ninefold Canon review was still open.

Its practitioners continued arriving at the Healing Pavilion with questions no one had asked before.

Cao Jin discovered the informal tournament betting on the second day and declared it morally corrupt.

Then he began recording which disciples underestimated Lin Fan.

Wei Kang confiscated the record.

Cao Jin started another.

The quarterfinal opponent made gambling arguments less entertaining.

GAO REN BODY TEMPERING — FIFTH STAGE NORTHERN YARD — FIRST RANK Gao Ren did not possess Zhou Tai’s overwhelming specialization, Lu Jian’s flexible sword tree, or Han Rui’s layered recovery architecture.

He possessed something more difficult.

Balance.

His Iron River Method joined attack, defense, movement, and qi control without leaving one obvious category behind.

Two weathered evaluation tokens hung from his belt.

He had reached the semifinals twice; both inner-court evaluations called him reliable and complete, then selected someone described as more exceptional.

This year, Gao Ren had asked to face Lin Fan.

Lin Fan studied four public records beneath the western pavilion.

HEAVEN-01 had preserved every movement the joint rules allowed, but information was not the problem.

Three models disagreed about the same man.

TECHNIQUE STATE ENERGY STATE MOVEMENT STATE One predicted a palm, another a shoulder entry, and the third insisted Gao Ren could not sustain both at once.

Each answer was defensible.

Together, they offered no action Lin Fan could trust.

Su Li stopped beside him.

“Gao Ren has injured six opponents in official competition.

Two needed extended Healing Pavilion treatment.” “Within the rules?” “Yes.” Her gaze shifted to the three models.

“You lose most often when you keep asking what he will do next.” Cao Jin frowned.

“Why does useful advice always sound incomplete?” The audit clerk arrived before Lin Fan could answer.

The previous combat records contained no unauthorized cultivation branch.

Any new state created today would be flagged for review.

Beyond her, the central arena was already full.

The winner would enter the top four, reserve forty spirit stones, receive one yellow-grade technique request, and gain inner-court evaluation rights.

Gao Ren waited at the center line.

He looked ordinary until he moved; then the dark current beneath his skin made stillness seem like a decision.

“I requested this match,” he said.

The top two seeds were allowed one opponent preference before the quarterfinal draw.

The officials still had to approve it.

Gao Ren had named Lin Fan, and the joint panel had accepted.

From the stands, Cao Jin shouted, “Procedurally valid corruption!” An elder shouted back, “Silence!” Gao Ren’s mouth moved by the smallest amount.

“Twice I reached this gate.

Twice they called me reliable and chose someone more exceptional.” “So defeating me changes the description.” “It changes what they can ignore.” Gao Ren raised both hands.

“And if I lose, I want to know what balance failed to see.” “You still intend to win.” “Very much.” The referee reviewed the match conditions.

Ring-out, surrender, or incapacity ended the bout.

Circulation instability triggered a mandatory ten-count recovery; failure to stabilize safely ended it as well.

Qiu watched from the healer’s bench, his attention fixed on Lin Fan’s left hand.

“Are you still officially second stage?” Gao Ren asked.

“Officially unresolved.” “Convenient.” “Not particularly.” The referee dropped his hand.

Gao Ren crossed half the arena before Lin Fan’s three models finished updating.

The fist hit his guard.

Lin Fan’s left fingers failed to close at the moment of impact.

His forearms slammed into his chest, his feet left the stone, and he landed hard enough to lose his breath.

The crowd erupted.

Gao Ren had opened with the same forward strike shown in his previous match.

The technique model recognized it.

The movement model caught the shortened step.

The energy model missed the extra force until it was already inside Lin Fan’s guard.

“Output above prior public maximum,” HEAVEN-01 reported inside his mind.

“Update.” Gao Ren attacked again.

Lin Fan rolled from the shoulder strike and rose on the outside angle.

Iron River changed with him.

Forward pressure became a low kick without breaking the circulation rhythm.

The movement model saw it.

The other two did not agree in time.

The kick struck Lin Fan’s thigh.

Pain numbed the leg and pulled his weight toward the damaged side.

Gao Ren stepped back instead of chasing the stagger.

“You are slow.” “The models are.” “Same thing while you are inside them.” He came forward before Lin Fan could answer.

The palm folded into a forearm guard when Lin Fan slipped outside.

The movement model caught the change; the technique model did not.

Lin Fan obeyed the wrong certainty and met Gao Ren’s knee instead.

The impact lifted him onto one foot.

He caught Gao Ren’s sleeve with his left hand to keep from falling.

The two numb fingers failed.

Gao Ren rotated free and drove a shoulder into Lin Fan’s chest.

Lin Fan hit the stone, rolled, and came up with his left hand tucked close to the body.

Qiu rose from the healer’s bench.

Gao Ren noticed.

“He cleared you.” “Conditionally.” “The strike will not become softer because the clearance has an adjective.” “I noticed.” Gao Ren attacked the injured side again.

Not cruelly and not carelessly.

He treated it as the arena treated every weakness that fell within the rules: available.

Lin Fan tracked fist, qi, and foot.

One model urged retreat; another showed the retreat entering the shoulder line.

The third updated after Gao Ren’s weight had shifted.

He escaped the fist and took the shoulder.

His back struck the boundary barrier.

Light rippled behind him.

Lin Fan stood.

Three correct descriptions were arguing over a present that had already passed.

“Combine the streams,” he said inwardly.

“Requested state space exceeds stable processing margin,” HEAVEN-01 replied.

“Reduce resolution.” “Which variables?” “Anything that cannot change the next exchange.

Estimate the rest.” The pause lasted less than a breath.

“Provisional integrated state generated.

Confidence reduced.” “Show the uncertainty.” The model did not become cleaner.

It became honest.

Clear branches remained sharp.

Unknown transitions stayed dark.

His numb fingers, damaged thigh, remaining arena space, and Gao Ren’s available qi occupied the same moving state.

Gao Ren advanced.

Lin Fan stopped asking what came next.

He watched where each choice would leave them.

The forward diagonal cost him least.

He entered.

Gao Ren punched.

Lin Fan passed the fist and reached the fifth-stage cultivator’s side, driving his right palm into the ribs before the Iron River guard could rotate.

Gao Ren absorbed the strike and turned.

Lin Fan was already gone.

The roar thinned into attention.

Gao Ren turned with no sign of surprise.

His elbow covered the ribs Lin Fan had struck, his rear foot closed the outside lane, and his left palm arrived where Lin Fan’s retreat should have ended.

One branch protected the thigh and trapped the numb hand.

Another protected the hand and exposed the thigh to Gao Ren’s heel.

Lin Fan chose the hand.

He let the heel scrape his leg, used the pain to shorten his fall, and slid under the palm.

Gao Ren followed with a downward fist.

Lin Fan rolled across the stone.

The fist broke the place where his ribs had been and sent fragments skipping into the barrier.

He rose on the far side with blood warming the inside of his cheek.

Gao Ren advanced behind a narrower guard.

Lin Fan offered his damaged left side, then withdrew it when the fifth-stage cultivator committed only half a step.

Gao Ren did not take the bait.

“Better,” he said.

“You sound disappointed.” “No.

I wanted to know whether you could change before I broke the hand.” From the healer’s bench, Qiu made a sound that carried no approval at all.

Unable to trade blows, Lin Fan made Gao Ren buy each attempt.

A short retreat drew a high-output step; a half-turn forced the next palm to correct.

He surrendered distance in pieces while Gao Ren paid for whole attacks.

Gao Ren tested the pattern with a low-cost jab.

Lin Fan did not retreat.

The jab stopped against his right forearm, and for the first time the fifth-stage cultivator spent less than Lin Fan did.

“You are counting expenditure,” Gao Ren said.

“You are controlling it.” “Balance does not mean every part pays equally.” He shifted the next cost into position instead of qi.

Two ordinary steps cut off the wide exit.

Lin Fan took the narrow one and found Gao Ren’s hip waiting there.

The collision drove air from his lungs and pushed him another pace toward the boundary.

The integrated state shifted.

Lin Fan shortened his retreat until Gao Ren had to choose between preserving the cage and striking with full force.

For three exchanges, Gao Ren preserved it.

On the fourth, Lin Fan let his rear heel touch the warning line.

The crowd shouted at once.

Gao Ren committed to the finish.

Lin Fan slipped across his front and traded the last pace of arena for open space behind him.

Gao Ren turned in time, but the correction cost the qi he had tried to save.

The fifth-stage cultivator’s breathing remained steady.

The dark current under his skin did not.

Lin Fan feinted left and escaped right.

Gao Ren corrected.

Lin Fan stopped short, forcing another correction that found no target.

“Opponent expenditure exceeds yours by more than threefold,” HEAVEN-01 said.

“Boundary?” “Decreasing.” Cao Jin screamed from the stands, “You are running out of arena!” Lin Fan knew.

Gao Ren knew too.

The larger disciple stopped six paces away.

The forward pressure vanished so abruptly that the crowd needed another breath to fall silent.

“You wanted me tired,” Gao Ren said.

“Yes.” “I am.” He tapped one fist against his chest.

“Not enough.” The fifth-stage qi expanded—not wastefully, but with deliberate violence.

A deeper circuit opened through both arms and legs.

IRON RIVER: FLOODGATE RELEASE UNKNOWN HIGH-OUTPUT STATE Gao Ren moved.

The first strike changed direction after Lin Fan committed, driving pain through both arms.

The second arrived before his guard recovered; the third split the air beside his temple and herded him sideways into Gao Ren’s preferred path.

Lin Fan tried the new model.

A dark branch hid the end of Gao Ren’s next step.

He chose it anyway and discovered a rising knee behind the uncertainty.

The knee caught his ribs.

He folded, protecting the left arm, and Gao Ren’s palm descended toward the back of his shoulder.

Lin Fan threw himself forward.

The strike missed the spine by a handspan and cratered the stone.

“Unknown is not safe,” Gao Ren said.

“I know.” “Then stop entering it.” Lin Fan forced air back into his lungs.

“That would make it your territory.” Floodgate Release traded efficiency for violent output.

Its cost would not matter unless Lin Fan survived long enough to collect it.

He abandoned the fists and watched their aftermath.

Every release drove qi outward.

Before the next full strike, the current returned through the dantian and closed at the chest.

Fast did not mean instantaneous.

Gao Ren’s fourth strike came.

Lin Fan moved during the return and entered too close for another full palm.

Gao Ren shortened it into an elbow.

Lin Fan turned with the contact.

The point of Gao Ren’s elbow scraped his shoulder instead of crushing the joint, and his right hand brushed Gao Ren’s wrist.

He did not try to hold it.

He felt the returning current pass under the skin and close through a shallow junction below the sternum.

Half a heartbeat.

The junction sat outside the meridian wall.

If it missed one beat, the arena seal would divert the return before tissue took damage.

The wrist contact fixed its location.

Gao Ren pulled free.

His eyes dropped once toward Lin Fan’s hand.

On the next exchange, he did not release.

Lin Fan moved for the return that never came and entered a clinch.

Gao Ren locked one arm around his shoulder, turned, and threw him across the center line.

He struck the stone on his right side.

The integrated state dissolved into white for half a breath.

Without opening Floodgate Release, Gao Ren advanced behind a basic Iron River palm.

Ordinary circulation and high-output attack now began from the same guarded chest.

The first was a feint.

The second was not.

Lin Fan moved late and took the edge of the palm across his jaw.

He tasted blood, but the dark branch behind Gao Ren’s sternum brightened during the completed release.

The external junction closed in the same place.

Same external gate.

Same protected recovery route.

Enough to risk the match.

Not enough to risk the meridian.

Another floodgate strike came.

Lin Fan let it pass, moved through the return, and found the place where the previous attack had stopped being dangerous.

The spectators began to see the pattern.

Gao Ren struck.

Lin Fan moved after it.

Again.

As the reserve fell, the interval lengthened by fractions.

Gao Ren felt it too.

He drew both palms back.

A deeper circuit opened along his spine.

The arena formation brightened before the final double-palm release left him.

The integrated state narrowed around one exchange.

Gao Ren’s arms were committed.

His return lagged behind the output.

Lin Fan’s left step remained unsafe, but the forward diagonal stayed open.

He moved.

The double palm tore his robe and grazed his ribs hard enough to lift him from the stone.

He landed inside Gao Ren’s stance as the fifth-stage cultivator tried to close the floodgate circuit.

The qi had not returned.

Lin Fan did not strike the dantian.

He touched the external release gate beneath Gao Ren’s sternum with no more force than he had used at the wrist.

The junction missed its closing beat.

Floodgate Release failed to seal.

The arena formation caught the diverted current in its protected recovery route, but Gao Ren’s high-output loop remained open.

He stepped back and tried to settle into the basic method.

The dark current shuddered across his chest.

Forcing Iron River now would pull the open loop back through his dantian.

The arena formation turned amber.

The referee raised one hand.

“Circulation instability.

Ten-count recovery begins.” Gao Ren remained standing.

He still possessed more qi, strength, and endurance.

None could be used safely until the high-output loop closed and the base current cleared.

One breath.

Two.

At five, the amber light trembled but did not fade.

At eight, Gao Ren looked once toward the inner-court gallery.

His fingers closed around the two old evaluation tokens at his waist.

The metal clicked before he forced his hand open.

Ten.

The formation remained amber.

“Unable to continue within the recovery interval,” the referee said.

“Winner—Lin Fan.” Gao Ren’s thumb pressed into the worn edge of the older token.

He looked once at the unlit inner-court lantern above his own name, then released it.

The central arena erupted.

Lin Fan’s name moved into the top four.

Forty spirit stones, one yellow-grade manual request, and inner-court evaluation eligibility appeared beneath it.

Then a red seal covered all three.

PENDING JOINT REVIEW The crowd booed the seal more loudly than it had cheered the result.

Lin Fan touched the black token at his waist.

“Submit the full sequence.” The audit seal accepted it.

Cao Jin disappeared beneath people who had stopped pretending they were not cheering.

Huo Yan shouted.

Bai Ming shouted louder.

When the noise thinned, Gao Ren came to stand opposite Lin Fan.

“The rule ended the match,” Gao Ren said.

“Do not mistake that for mastering Iron River.” “I don’t.” Gao Ren did not smile.

“Good.

Then next time, no count.” “Outside a tournament, I would help you close the loop before it reached your dantian.” “After Qiu clears both of us,” Lin Fan added.

From somewhere inside the cheering pile, Cao Jin shouted, “That is not how rematches are scheduled!” Three rows above the official gallery, Zhao Wuji watched without speaking.

The inner-court evaluation lantern lit beside Lin Fan’s name.

The red PENDING JOINT REVIEW seal remained across it.
