The summons arrived before breakfast.

Lin Fan expected the Discipline Hall.

Instead, the message bore the seal of the Healing Pavilion.Full novel: The Heavenly Algorithm — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Deacon Qiu waited outside when he arrived, wearing the same gray robes and the same unreadable expression he had carried into Vault Seven.

“One formation recorded you as a first-stage disciple,” Qiu said.

“Another measured an absorption rate beyond the outer-court limit.

The archive found no matching cultivation pattern.” Lin Fan looked past him at the pavilion doors.

“They measured different variables.” “All three results are individually valid.” Qiu’s expression did not change.

“Together, they should be impossible.” “That does not make them contradictory.” “That explanation has not comforted anyone.” Inside the pavilion, Wei Kang stood beside a circular cultivation platform.

He no longer wore his sword.

A stack of blank recording slips rested on the table beside him.

Cao Jin leaned against the opposite wall with his arms folded.

“I told them you used one spirit stone for ninety-four cycles,” he said.

Lin Fan looked at him.

“You counted?” “I did not believe you.” “And now?” “I believe the floor.” Qiu gestured toward the platform.

“The sect accepts that your absorption rate changed.

It does not accept that the change is stable.” “Neither do I.” Wei Kang’s brows drew together.

“You admit that?” “Why wouldn’t I?” “Most disciples brought here argue that their breakthrough is genuine.” “I have not broken through.” That answer seemed to unsettle Wei Kang more than a boast would have.

Qiu placed a palm-sized crystal at the center of the platform.

“This array records the complete path from external qi intake to storage in the dantian.

It corrects nothing and assigns no category.

Observation only.” “Who designed it?” “The Healing Pavilion.” “That was not my question.” Qiu’s gaze sharpened.

“The current formation is less than eighty years old.” Lin Fan stepped onto the platform.

“Good.” The test began with a single thread of spiritual energy.

Lin Fan used the adaptive breathing cycle he had built the night before.

Qi entered slowly, divided at the damaged junction, and passed through the reopened meridians without exceeding their pressure limit.

The crystal brightened.

Blue lines traced the current through a model of his body above the platform.

For the first half of the circulation, the route matched his calculations.

Then the current reached the spiritual root.

The crystal flickered.

Nearly two-thirds of the gathered qi reversed direction.

It did not disperse or leak into the surrounding tissue.

It returned along the path it had entered and struck his meridians from within.

Lin Fan’s shoulders jerked.

He ended the cycle before the pressure could build.

Wei Kang stepped forward.

“Your route failed.” “No,” Lin Fan said through a controlled breath.

“It reached the destination.” “Then why did the qi return?” “That is the question.” The formation replayed the cycle.

Its blue projection showed no diagnosis, only the measured route, pressure, and direction of flow.

At the spiritual root, the current stopped against an invisible boundary.

A small portion passed through.

The rest was refused.

Qiu studied the image.

“The root cannot accept the volume.” “That was our assumption.” “And now?” “The volume was lower than the final successful cycle last night.” Cao Jin moved closer to the projection.

“Then the root accepted more yesterday.” “No.

Yesterday I measured what remained inside the body.

I did not isolate what entered the root.” Lin Fan watched the replay again.

The rejection was too orderly to be damage.

Damaged tissue leaked.

This current turned back at the same boundary, with the same delay and nearly the same proportion, each time the formation replayed the record.

Not failure.

Protocol.

Lin Fan closed his eyes and called inward.

HEAVEN-01.

Active.

Compare the rejection trace with the structural sample preserved from Vault Seven.

The archive sample is incomplete.

Compare the exchange sequence, not the full structure.

The pavilion’s blue image remained unchanged.

Behind Lin Fan’s closed eyes, HEAVEN-01 laid a second trace across it: a pale pattern reconstructed from less than a tenth of the data in the ancient module.

The two roots did not share the same shape.

Their exchange sequences did.

Contact.

Recognition.

Response.

Transfer.

His root completed the first two stages.

At the third, it answered in four uneven pulses: one strong, two weak, then a final strong beat after a delay.

The surrounding cultivation structure expected three responses of equal weight at equal intervals.

Before each measurement, the pavilion crystal had emitted a three-beat calibration signal.

HEAVEN-01 placed it beneath the four-part answer.

The intervals did not align.

The ancient sample had preserved the four-part response.

The modern calibration trace had not.

Lin Fan opened his eyes.

“Again.” Qiu looked at him.

“Again?” “Reduce the input to one quarter.

I need the response timing.” “You reopened two meridians last night.” “And I know why they failed.” “That does not make another test safe.” “No.

It makes it useful.” Qiu held his gaze, then lowered the formation output.

“Diagnostic cycle only.” Lin Fan began again.

The smaller current reached the root.

This time HEAVEN-01 slowed the exchange until a heartbeat seemed to stretch across several breaths.

The first pulse passed cleanly.

The second and third followed too close together.

The fourth arrived late and struck the boundary after the surrounding system had already closed the exchange.

Rejection came at once.

The returning current drove a needle of pain beneath Lin Fan’s ribs.

He diverted it into the release branch and exhaled until the pressure fell.

The blue projection recorded every movement without naming any of them.

Lin Fan pointed to the four peaks.

“My spiritual root is not broken.” Cao Jin gave a short laugh.

“Every assessment for seventeen years says otherwise.” “They measured the result.” Qiu looked from the projection to Lin Fan.

“What are you saying?” “The root is responding.

The response is not recognized.” Wei Kang shook his head.

“Spiritual roots do not identify themselves.” “Yours does.” Wei Kang’s expression hardened.

“No.” “Every time qi enters your root, it follows a repeatable exchange.

The sect calls the result affinity.

Its formations call the result classification.

Different language, same function.” Lin Fan indicated the failed trace.

“My root sends a response that the current cultivation structure cannot interpret.” Cao Jin stared at the four peaks.

“A wrong answer?” “A valid answer in an unsupported format.” No one else understood the phrase.

Lin Fan did.

A device could function perfectly and still fail to connect when two systems used different communication protocols.

The root was not dead.

The interface was incompatible.

The route he had opened during the Meridian Court assessment had solved only the physical connection.

It carried qi to the root; it did not teach the root and the surrounding system to understand one another.

Repairing that exchange was more dangerous than discovering it.

Across his vision, HEAVEN-01 displayed the limit he already knew.

[EMERGENCY USER MODE: CONSUMED] [WRITE ACCESS: DENIED] Direct modification of the spiritual root is unavailable.

Lin Fan studied the temporary branch beneath his ribs.

It had been built to carry qi around damaged tissue.

During the failed cycle, it had also held the returning current for a fraction of a breath.

He could not rewrite the root.

But he could still control the qi carrying its reply.

If the world could not understand the root’s native response, he did not need to change the speaker.

He needed an adapter.

The design formed from the same principle as the adaptive circulation method.

The route would respond to pressure and timing instead of following a fixed sequence.

The first strong pulse could pass unchanged.

The two weak middle pulses would be held inside the temporary branch.

When the final strong pulse arrived, Lin Fan would divide it, add half to each stored pulse, and release both at equal intervals.

Four uneven responses would leave the interface as three balanced ones.

No information would be written into the root.

The translation would exist only in the qi between the root and the surrounding system.

Adapter stability cannot be verified before execution.

Estimated failure modes: branch collapse, response inversion, meridian rupture.

Lin Fan calculated the margin between the final pulse and the temporary branch’s pressure limit.

There was almost none.

Qiu understood enough to refuse.

“No.” “You asked whether the absorption rate was stable.” “I did not ask you to dismantle your spiritual root in my pavilion.” “I am not changing the root.” Cao Jin folded his arms.

“That is what you said before Cell Seven tried to erase you.” Wei Kang moved the recording slips closer to the platform instead of stepping away.

“What do you need?” he asked.

Qiu turned toward him.

“You are here to record.” “I am recording that the subject identified a repeatable failure.

The formation has not explained it.” Qiu’s jaw tightened.

Then he activated the pavilion’s emergency seals.

Pale barriers closed over the doors and windows, and the gathering channels beneath the platform dimmed to their lowest setting.

“One attempt,” he said.

“If the return current touches the root, I terminate the circulation.” Lin Fan stepped back onto the platform.

The room filled with a controlled thread of qi.

He began the adaptive breathing cycle.

The current entered smoothly, divided at the damaged junction, and reached the spiritual root.

Contact.

Recognition.

The first strong response entered the carrier qi.

Now.

Lin Fan opened the temporary branch.

The first pulse passed.

He caught the second inside the side route, then the third.

Pressure climbed beneath his ribs as both weak responses circled inside a channel never designed to hold them.

The final pulse arrived late.

For one instant, the old instinct to optimize for speed urged him to release everything at once.

He ignored it.

Timing, not distance.

He divided the final pulse.

The first half merged with the stored second response.

Lin Fan released it one interval after the first.

The other half merged with the third and waited for the next interval.

The temporary branch began to split.

Cold fire tore from his dantian to his throat.

Red light flashed across the pavilion crystal.

Qiu raised his hand.

“Stop.” “Not yet.” “The connection is tearing.” “The buffer is tearing.” “There is no difference if both kill you.” Lin Fan held the cycle for one more heartbeat and released the third balanced response.

The adapter vanished as soon as the qi left it.

His root had not changed.

It continued speaking in four pulses.

But the surrounding system received three.

For one terrible moment, nothing happened.

Then the world answered.

The rejected current turned.

Not away.

Inward.

Every strand of spiritual energy in the pavilion shifted toward the platform.

Cao Jin stepped back as the pressure changed.

The lamps bent toward Lin Fan, and the qi channels beneath the floor brightened one after another.

The pavilion’s gathering formation had always fed every cultivation platform equally.

It had not chosen him.

It had recognized him.

The gathering array did not favor Lin Fan.

It obeyed a priority the present sect no longer knew existed.

Spiritual energy poured toward his root.

Qiu struck the control crystal and reduced the supply, but the formation continued redirecting what remained.

Wei Kang’s recording slips filled so quickly that the top sheet curled from the heat.

“The array recognizes him,” Wei Kang said.

No one answered.

Lin Fan felt the translated connection lock into place.

For seventeen years, spiritual energy had entered this body like an intruder.

Now it arrived as if a door had finally opened.

The temporary route still carried qi to the root, but it was no longer forcing access through a rejected interface.

Each native response passed through the adapter and returned in a form the surrounding system accepted.

One circulation completed.

Then a second.

On the third, the damaged branch trembled.

Qiu shut down the formation.

Silence struck the room.

Lin Fan remained standing at the center of the platform, breathing hard.

The spiritual root was neither damaged, empty, nor weak.

Its branching structure simply extended beyond every category in the pavilion archive.

Cao Jin looked at the darkened channels beneath his feet.

“The gathering array moved for you.” “Yes.” “It has never done that for a first-stage disciple.” Wei Kang lifted the record.

“It did not respond to his realm.” Qiu studied the raw blue model rotating above the crystal.

No label appeared beneath it.

His formation had done exactly what he promised: it observed.

Then the blue projection froze.

Colorless symbols spread across it in a second layer.

Their lines were finer than the pavilion script and seemed to occupy the spaces between the blue light rather than the light itself.

Qiu’s hand stopped above the control crystal.

“Those symbols do not belong to this formation.” Lin Fan knew the script.

He had seen its geometry in Vault Seven.

A second, older pattern unfolded inside the image of his spiritual root, its branches denser and far more complex than the structure the pavilion had recorded.

External legacy layer detected.

Recording.

The colorless pattern vanished almost as soon as it appeared.

[ANCIENT SPIRITUAL PATTERN DETECTED] Qiu struck the control crystal.

The last message disappeared, and the projection collapsed into ordinary blue lines.

He restarted the observation array.

Only Lin Fan’s meridians appeared.

The hidden pattern did not return.

Inside his mind, HEAVEN-01 compared the preserved trace against the vanished layer.

Recovered data: eight point seven percent.

Reconstruction unavailable.

Qiu collected Wei Kang’s recording slips before the final line had cooled.

He pressed his seal across the stack, then placed the pavilion crystal in a black storage case.

“This test is closed,” he said.

“No one restarts the array without inner-court authority.” Cao Jin glanced at Lin Fan.

“And if the pattern appears again?” “Then it appears in a sealed room with three elders present.” Before noon, every record of the test had been removed from the Healing Pavilion.

For seventeen years, every formation had called Lin Fan’s spiritual root broken.

The first one to understand its language answered as though it remembered him.
