Gu Wanhao was currently concerned about the Demon Beast predicament the clan was about to face, and seeing that Gu Changhuan was uninjured, he paid it no further mind.
Gu Changhuan returned to his room, sat on the edge of the bed, and sighed softly as he placed the book in his hand into his Storage Bag.
After calming down, Gu Changhuan was no longer panicked, nor did he dwell on philosophical questions like whether he was Gu Huan or Gu Changhuan.
Gu Changhuan had also been called Gu Huan before coming to Emerald Maple Mountain; he had accepted the memories of his past life along with their patterns of thought, but in this life, he was Gu Changhuan!
Without knowing it, Gu Changhuan had survived an Inner Demon Tribulation, a prospect that terrified cultivators.
Inner demons usually came to tempt those advancing to Nascent Soul.
It was exceedingly rare for a novice like him to face such a trial.
The Gu Clan lacked the knowledge to recognize the danger.
The records of great clans and major sects described how people with spiritual bodies were prone to inner demons when they first began cultivating.
Such people therefore took great care to keep their minds clear and true to themselves at the outset.
But why had the brocade followed him into this life?
Or was it the brocade that had allowed him to recover his past-life memories?
If so, it must have an extraordinary origin.
For a moment, Gu Changhuan could not make sense of it.
Still, he was not one to obsess over a puzzle.
Recovering his past-life memories was already a gain.
A modern adult thought very differently from a young child in this world.
That perspective would help him advance further, with fewer obstacles, in cultivation.
Gu Changhuan slept soundly through the night and awoke early the next morning full of vitality.
Seeing this, Gu Wanhao completely dismissed the small episode from the previous evening, entirely unaware that Gu Changhuan had faced an inner demon the night before.
“Good morning, Grandpa.” Seeing him ready to leave, Gu Changhuan asked, “Are you going to the market today?” Gu Wanhao said yes and handed him a square metal token.
“This formation disk controls the courtyard formation.
Keep it safe.
Do you remember what I told you?” “Changhuan remembers.
Before leaving home, sleeping, or settling down to meditate, I must always check the Formation.
Don’t worry, Grandfather, I won’t slack off!” Gu Changhuan said earnestly.
Gu Wanhao nodded and added a word of caution, “Diligent cultivation is a good thing, but be careful not to overdo it and harm your Meridians.” Though neither was particularly hungry, the grandfather and grandson shared breakfast together.
After Gu Wanhao left, Gu Changhuan went straight to the Scripture Pavilion just as he had the day before to continue his studies.
“Great-grandfather, good morning.” Gu Xuanzhan waved a hand.
“Sit.” Gu Changhuan sat on the meditation cushion, eager to learn what today’s lesson would be.
He checked his excitement and reminded himself to stay calm.
Great-grandfather must not notice anything unusual; children his age were usually reluctant to study.
“Today, I will teach you how to use your Divine Sense and share some knowledge regarding Demon Beasts.” The Nine Perches Mountains where the Gu Clan resided directly bordered Demon Beast territory, making an understanding of Demon Beasts an essential part of every Gu Clan descendant’s education.
Gu Xuanzhan spoke slowly.
“Divine sense is power that comes from the soul.
It can be both tangible and intangible; with sufficient cultivation, you can even give it form.
It is like an extra pair of eyes, and learning to use it is easy.
It lies in your sea of consciousness, in the Niwan Palace between your brows.
Quiet your mind and look inward into that sea, and you will find it.” Gu Changhuan cleared his thoughts as instructed.
Soon he saw his sea of consciousness, vast and gray, with his divine sense swimming through it like a little fish.
At a thought, the fish darted out and circled him.
His eyes were closed, yet he could “see” everything around him.
Incredible!
Whether it was merely his imagination or not, when the Divine Sense returned to the Sea of Consciousness, it seemed to have shrunk by a fraction.
Could Divine Sense be a consumable resource?
Did it diminish with use?
Gu Changhuan continued to observe it closely and noticed that once back within the Sea of Consciousness, it slowly returned to its original size.
Gu Changhuan breathed a sigh of relief.
So Divine Sense, much like Spiritual Power, could slowly recover on its own.
“What is that?” Gu Changhuan started in surprise!
He spotted a tiny golden dot of light within his Sea of Consciousness.
The golden speck flickered intermittently, which was why he had failed to notice it earlier.
When Gu Changhuan swept his Divine Sense toward it, he realized that the golden speck was actually a palm-sized piece of golden brocade cloth.
So the brocade cloth had hidden itself inside his Sea of Consciousness when it vanished!
Gu Changhuan carefully ‘observed’ the piece of brocade cloth.
Upon its surface, a few tiny points of light were scattered: three green dots and one purple dot.
Looking closer, he saw his own name, “Gu Changhuan,” beneath the purple dot.
The dark green dot bore Great-grandfather’s name, “Gu Xuanzhan.” The other two green dots were labeled “Second-Tier, Middle-Grade Spirit Wine” and “First-Tier, High-Grade Meditation Cushion.” Gu Changhuan noticed that the green dots representing first-tier items were much fainter in color than those of the second-tier items.
In his previous life, the item names displayed on the brocade cloth had no distinction in color, nor did they display people’s names.
Now, however, there were distinct changes.
Could there be some deeper mystery hidden within?
If first- and second-tier things appeared as green dots, why was his own dot purple when he was only in Qi Condensation?
Gu Changhuan had many questions.
The brocade had followed him from one life to the next, so it must be a treasure.
Perhaps it was even an opportunity to advance along the Great Dao.
But how could he make use of it when it showed only what lay within twenty meters of him?
Perhaps the brocade cloth possessed other wondrous uses he had yet to discover, he thought.
Withdrawing his awareness from his Sea of Consciousness, Gu Changhuan spoke up: “Great-grandfather, I succeeded!” He had already decided to tell no one about his treasure.
A man might be innocent, yet the treasure he carried could make him a target.
It was the same reason he kept his spiritual body secret, only more urgent.
No one could take his spiritual body without seizing his flesh.
A treasure, however, belonged to whoever got hold of it.
Just as Gu Huan’s friend in his past life had harbored greedy thoughts upon discovering the existence of this object, if outsiders were to learn of the brocade cloth and its miraculous functions, his fate would likely be no better than it was before.
The cultivation world was vast and full of wondrous treasures.
Perhaps no one would care about a strange cloth that showed only what lay within twenty meters.
But Gu Changhuan could not afford—and did not dare—to take that risk.
