Everyone looked at Gu Hua.
“What are you standing there for?” Xu Jie said coldly. “Gu Hua, take off your head. Wen Shi is waiting for you to present it to him.”
Gu Hua stared at Wen Shi, who had suddenly appeared, unable to believe his eyes. His eyeballs nearly popped out of their sockets.
“I…” Gu Hua wanted to make a threatening remark but was afraid of offending Xu Jie, whose stance was unclear. His face turned pale, then flushed, looking extremely unpleasant.
Wen Shi glanced faintly at Xu Jie but said nothing, his feelings complicated.
Over the years, he had suffered from insomnia, waking at the slightest disturbance, and had never slept so soundly.
If he hadn’t checked the surveillance footage and confirmed that Xu Jie had obediently leaned against the door and sat there all night, Wen Shi would have suspected that the other had drugged him.
However, he couldn’t rule out the possibility that Xu Jie had used an Artifact to make him fall into a deep sleep.
Noticing Wen Shi’s gaze, Xu Jie beamed with joy, clicking his tongue to greet his beloved.
Hahahaha, that’s pretty much how it went. Xu Jie is so full of witty remarks ^_^
Gu Hua sneered inwardly: Look at that cheap smile of yours!
Wen Shi: Is Xu Jie’s weird laugh a provocation?
Gu Hua: “How are you still alive? I clearly saw that Monster enter your room!”
How did Wen Shi survive?
Wait, could it be that the Monster was only targeting me?
Oh my god!
Could it be that Wen Shi used a Curse Artifact to curse me?
“Monster?” Feng Zhouzhou said. “Is it the Monster that caused the tragedy?”
“It’s not the Monster that caused the tragedy,” Wen Shi said slowly.
“Last night, Gu Hua provoked the patient he mentioned—the one who bit off his own finger.
Then he tried to shift the blame onto me, wanting me to bear the patient’s retaliation.”
And then, Gu Hua’s finger count decreased by one.
Gu Hua’s left hand now only had his thumb and little finger left.
“What patient? It was clearly a Mosquito Monster!” Gu Hua immediately jumped up.
“A Mosquito Monster with a Three-Meter-Long Proboscis! Damn it, those Blood-Red Compound Eyes could eat a person!”
Wen Shi shrugged. “He is a patient.”
“I can testify, he really is a patient,” Xu Jie said, sizing up Gu Hua. “To mistake a patient for a Monster—your delusions have gotten worse.”
Gu Hua was so angry he nearly exploded. “I’m not sick!”
“I’m a doctor. If I say you’re sick, then you’re sick,” Xu Jie declared with finality.
The Players realized that the patient Wen Shi mentioned was the one without teeth.
“That patient really isn’t a problem, Hua-ge. Are you hallucinating?”
“Describe the Monster’s appearance in detail. It would be best if you could draw it.”
“I also think… Hua-ge, you’re sick.”
Seeing that none of the Players spoke up for him, Gu Hua sneered and turned to ask the mute. “Do you think so too?”
“The mute agrees with me,” Xu Jie glanced at Little Mute and spoke up for him.
Mute: “”
Gu Hua sneered. None of these people believed him—they were treating him like a Japanese person!
Wen Shi said nothing. He turned and went back to his room, returning with a white bedsheet in hand.
Walking past the others, he covered the corpse—whose internal organs had been hollowed out, whose death was gruesome, and who was barely clothed—with the sheet.
“How did she actually die?” Feng Zhouzhou asked, her gaze clear yet foolish.
Wen Shi said, “After ten o’clock last night, did any of you hear knocking?”
“I vaguely heard someone asking me to go on duty,” Feng Zhouzhou seemed to remember something, her face instantly turning pale. Trembling, she said,
“The nurse said that after ten o’clock at night, a lucky person would be randomly selected for duty. I didn’t go yesterday.”
It’s over, I’m definitely done for!
Feng Zhouzhou, shrouded in the shadow of death, was so terrified that his legs went weak. He collapsed to the ground, wishing he could kowtow to the nurse.
“After ten o’clock, someone knocked on my door too, asking me to take the night shift,” Wen Shi said calmly. “She opened the door, but you didn’t. You’re very lucky.”
Rule 1: Players cannot leave their rooms after 10 p.m.
Rule 4: After 10 p.m., the nurse will randomly select a player for night duty.
Rules 1 and 4 conflict. How can players avoid this?
How to determine whether the one knocking is the nurse or a Specter depends entirely on one’s own abilities.
“Why didn’t you open the door?” Gu Hua demanded.
Wen Shi’s gaze turned icy. “What do you think?”
Gu Hua guiltily averted his eyes.
“Leaving the body here isn’t a solution,” Wen Shi said. “The smell of blood might attract other Specters.”
The clinic had patients in the Mutation Phase—half-Eerie Monsters, half-human.
The scent of blood could drive them into a frenzy.
“Where should we bury it?” Gu Hua said sarcastically. “This is a clinic, not a funeral home. Are we supposed to cremate it?”
In the past, Wen Shi would have had players handle the body by moving it to the mortuary on the basement level.
But now that he was a player himself, it was harder to manage.
“If there’s nowhere to bury it, you could eat it,” Xu Jie said, crossing his arms. “Human flesh is high-quality protein.”
Gu Hua’s face instantly darkened.
Listen to that—is that even human language?
Xu Jie wasn’t actually suggesting that players eat human flesh. He just couldn’t stand Gu Hua bullying the timid ones and scaring them all the time.
In Divine Descent, there was a high-level Instance called the Hunger Games. To clear it, players had to solve puzzles, with no time limit but no food provided either.
It was a large-scale Instance with over a hundred participants, yet no water or food was supplied.
In the end, it often led to situations of “famine and cannibalism.”
Among Wen Shi’s “nuclear” neighbors, there were those who sold human flesh under the guise of mutton. As a doctor, he wouldn’tt mistake it.
A minute later, the nurse came upstairs, unfazed by the players’ terrified expressions. She asked Wen Shi to help her carry the body to the mortuary on the basement level.
As soon as Wen Shi stepped into the mortuary, he was enveloped in a bone-chilling cold, as if wearing a soaked cotton coat. The cold seeped into his pores, soaked into his cells, and nearly froze his blood.
“What are you doing here?” Wen Shi asked, his tone indifferent as he looked at Xu Jie, who had suddenly appeared.
Xu Jie replied, “Patrolling.”
This Instance was very Anomalous. He had followed to protect Wen Shi and scout the terrain.
As he spoke, Xu Jie bent down and took over Wen Shi’s task of pushing the body.
Wen Shi and the nurse exchanged a glance, speechless.
He had originally planned to use the body-moving task to inform the staff about certain matters.
Xu Jie’s arrival disrupted Wen Shi’s plans.
“Boss, he’s messing with your Experimental Apparatus,” the nurse whispered, clenching her fists. “Should you deal with him, or should I?”
Everything placed in the basement, whether bodies or Experimental Apparatus, had its significance. If mishandled, the things inside could revive and turn into Anomalies.
Wen Shi pinched the bridge of his nose. “Don’t move.”
The nurse, who had already picked up a large hammer to smash Xu Jie’s head, quickly withdrew her hand, staring at Wen Shi in disbelief.
In the past, when players accidentally entered the basement, the Boss never suppressed the Specters inside.
Now, he was actually allowing this imposter to tamper with the Experimental Apparatus and even helping to suppress the Specters. Such double standards!
Wen Shi watched as Xu Jie rummaged through the Experimental Apparatus and Medical Instruments, his frown deepening.
As he walked, an icy chill spread through his waist and limbs.
He looked down and saw dozens of thick blood vessels coiled around his body.
Before he could react, he was dragged by a tremendous force deep into the basement.
