The training ground blazed with colors.
Golden fire, silver frost, green healing light, and purple shadow energy swirled together in a chaotic dance of power. James stood at the center, his fists blazing, facing Serena, Rourke, and Lysandra in a four-way sparring match that would have killed anyone else.
But they weren't trying to kill each other. They were learning to fight together.
"Serena, freeze his left side!" Rourke bellowed, his massive fists slamming into the ground and sending shockwaves across the obsidian floor.
Serena raised her hands, and a wave of ice erupted toward James's left flank. He pivoted, golden fire blazing from his palm to melt the frost before it could reach him.
"Nice try!" James shouted, launching a blast of flame at Serena. She dodged gracefully, her silver robes shimmering.
Lysandra materialized behind James, her dagger aimed at his ribs. He sensed her a split second before she struck—the golden fire in his chest flaring in warning—and spun, catching her wrist.
"You're getting better," Lysandra purred, her dark eyes glinting with amusement. "But not good enough."
She vanished into the shadows, reappearing ten feet away.
James panted, his golden fire flickering. "This is insane. I can't fight all three of you at once."
"That's the point!" Kael shouted from the sidelines, his green healing energy pulsing around him. "You won't have to! We'll be there with you!"
James shook his head, laughing despite his exhaustion. "Kael, you're not even fighting. You're just watching."
"I'M MORAL SUPPORT!" Kael protested. "IT'S A CRITICAL ROLE!"
Sage appeared beside Kael, her arms crossed. "He's right, James. You need to learn to fight with your allies, not just alongside them. The final battle won't be one-on-one. Valerian will have allies too."
James nodded grimly. "I know. But it's hard. I've been alone for so long."
Serena stepped forward, her ice-blue eyes softening just slightly. "You're not alone anymore. That's what we're trying to show you."
Rourke nodded, his massive gray form looming behind her. "We fight together. Or we don't fight at all."
James looked at them—these powerful, dangerous warriors who had chosen to stand with him. A Frostblood, a Stoneheart, a Shadowblood. And Kael, the Soulweaver who had discovered his true power in the heat of battle.
The golden fire in his chest swelled with warmth.
"Okay," James said, his voice steady. "Let's do this. Together."
Valerian's Strike
But Valerian wasn't waiting for them to get stronger.
That night, a scream echoed through the training ground. James was on his feet in an instant, the golden fire blazing around his fists. He ran toward the sound—and found Kael crumpled on the ground, his face pale, his body covered in black burns.
"KAEL!" James shouted, dropping to his knees beside his friend.
Kael's eyes fluttered open, his voice weak. "Valerian... he... he found me. He said this was just a warning. That next time, he won't leave me alive."
James's blood ran cold. Rage flooded through him—hotter than the golden fire, more consuming than anything he'd ever felt.
"I'll kill him," James growled. "I'll tear him apart with my bare hands."
Sage appeared beside him, her voice sharp. "No. That's what he wants. He's baiting you into a reckless attack. If you go after him now, you'll lose."
James turned on her, his eyes blazing. "He hurt Kael! He almost killed him! And you want me to wait?!"
Sage's voice was calm but firm. "Yes. I want you to wait. Because waiting gives you time to become strong enough to destroy him completely."
James opened his mouth to argue—but Kael grabbed his hand.
"James," Kael whispered, his voice barely audible. "I'm okay. I'll heal. Just... don't do anything stupid. Please."
James looked down at his friend—at the burns covering his body, the pain in his eyes—and felt the rage slowly fade, replaced by something colder. More focused.
"You're right," James said quietly. "I can't let him provoke me. But I won't wait forever. When we meet in the finals, I'm going to end him. For good."
Kael managed a weak smile. "That's my Dragonheart. Always dramatic."
James laughed despite himself. "You're still ridiculous."
"I KNOW! It's my superpower!"
James helped Kael to his feet, supporting him as they walked back to the healing chamber. The burns were already beginning to fade, Kael's Soulweaver energy working to repair the damage.
But James knew that Valerian had sent a message.
And it was time to send one back.
The Breakthrough
That night, James couldn't sleep.
He stood alone on the training ground, the golden fire flickering around his fists. The alien sky of the Aetherwilds swirled overhead, purple and gold, silent and eternal.
He thought about Kael. About Sage. About Serena, Rourke, and Lysandra. About everyone who had put their trust in him.
And he thought about Valerian. The Blackwood heir who had hurt his friends. Who had killed his parents. Who was determined to destroy everything he loved.
"I won't let him win," James whispered. "I can't."
The golden fire blazed brighter in his chest, hotter than ever before. He felt it surging through his veins, flooding every cell of his body with power.
Guide the fire. Become one with it.
James closed his eyes and let the power flow. He stopped fighting it, stopped trying to control it. Instead, he surrendered to it—became one with it.
The golden fire exploded outward, not as a violent burst, but as a steady, controlled inferno. It swirled around him like a living cocoon, warm and protective. James felt stronger than ever—faster, more powerful, more connected to his bloodline than he'd ever been.
When he opened his eyes, the golden fire was blazing around him like a second skin.
"I did it," he breathed. "I actually did it."
Sage appeared from the shadows, her scarred face unreadable. But there was a glint of approval in her eyes.
"You reached Grade Five," she said quietly. "That's a significant breakthrough. You can sustain the Dragonheart flame indefinitely now, at least at a basic level. More importantly, you've learned to let it flow through you naturally."
James looked down at his hands. The golden fire pulsed gently, responsive to his thoughts.
"So I'm ready," he said. "For Valerian."
Sage shook her head slowly. "Not yet. Valerian is Grade Eight. You need to work with your allies. Use their powers together. Alone, you'll fail. Together, you might succeed."
James nodded. "I understand. But I'm closer than I was yesterday. And that's enough for now."
Sage studied him for a long moment. "You've changed, James. You're not the frightened orphan who stumbled into the Aetherwilds anymore. You've become something more."
James smiled. "I had good teachers."
Sage's lips twitched—almost a smile. "Don't let it go to your head. You're still reckless. Still impulsive. Still prone to dramatic speeches."
"Those are my best qualities!" James protested.
Sage shook her head, but there was warmth in her eyes. "Get some sleep. Tomorrow, we train with the others. The semi-finals are in three days."
James watched her walk away, the golden fire still pulsing gently around him.
Three days. Three days until he faced Valerian in the finals.
He was ready.
The Morning After
Kael was fully healed by morning, his Soulweaver energy working miracles through the night.
"All good!" he announced, flexing his arms dramatically. "Perfectly healed! Good as new! Better than new, actually! I think I grew a few inches! Do I look taller?"
James laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. "You look the same. Annoying and ridiculously cheerful."
"I'LL TAKE THAT AS A COMPLIMENT!" Kael declared.
Serena approached, her silver robes flowing behind her. "The semi-finals are in three days. We need a plan."
Rourke lumbered over, his gray skin gleaming. "Agreed. Valerian won't fight fair. He'll have allies. We need to be ready."
Lysandra materialized beside them, her dark eyes glinting. "I've gathered intel. Valerian has recruited two other Grade Seven cultivators for the final match. A Fireblood from the Inferno Realm and a Stormblood from the Tempest Realm."
James frowned. "That's not allowed. The Crucible is supposed to be one-on-one."
Sage stepped forward, her voice grim. "Valerian has connections in the higher realms. He's bent the rules before. He'll bend them again."
James clenched his fists. "Then we bend the rules too. We face him with everyone. Serena, Rourke, Lysandra, Kael. All of us."
Serena raised an eyebrow. "That's against the rules."
James smiled. "So? We're breaking them anyway."
Rourke nodded slowly. "I like it. It's reckless. It's dangerous. And it's the only way we'll win."
Kael pumped his fist. "YES! TEAM DRAGONHEART! LET'S GO!"
Lysandra smirked. "I knew there was a reason I liked you."
James looked at each of them—his allies, his friends, his family. The golden fire in his chest swelled with warmth.
"We face Valerian in three days," he said. "And when we do, we're going to show him that the Last Dragonheart is stronger than he ever imagined."
