The Crucible roared with anticipation.
James stood in the preparation chamber, his golden fire pulsing steadily around his fists. The semi-finals were about to begin, and the atmosphere was electric with tension. Cultivators from every realm packed the obsidian colosseum, their eyes hungry for blood and spectacle.
Kael paced beside him, his mismatched eyes darting nervously. "Okay, okay, okay—we've got this. We've trained together. We've bonded. We're a team. A beautiful, powerful, slightly insane team that's going to crush everyone—"
"Kael." James placed a hand on his shoulder. "Breathe."
Kael took a shaky breath. "Right. Breathing. I can do that. I'm great at breathing. Been doing it my whole life, actually."
James smiled despite the tension. "Stay close to Sage. Watch for Valerian's allies. And whatever happens, don't do anything heroic."
Kael gasped dramatically. "ME?! Heroic?! Never! I'm a coward through and through! I'll be hiding behind Sage the entire time!"
"Good." James turned to Serena, Rourke, and Lysandra, who stood in the corner of the chamber, their expressions grim. "The semi-finals are three separate matches. Each of you has to win your fight to reach the final. Then we face Valerian together."
Serena nodded, her ice-blue eyes cold and focused. "I'll win my match. That's not a question."
Rourke cracked his massive knuckles. "Same. No one's getting past me."
Lysandra smirked, twirling a dagger between her fingers. "My opponent won't even see me coming. I'll be done in seconds."
Kael raised his hand. "What about me? Do I have to fight too?"
Sage stepped forward, her voice flat. "You're not in the semi-finals. You're support. Your job is to watch, heal, and stay alive."
Kael sighed with relief. "Oh, thank the gods. I was about to have a panic attack."
James turned to Sage. "What about Valerian?"
Sage's face darkened. "Valerian has a bye to the finals. He doesn't have to fight in the semi-finals. He's already guaranteed his spot."
James clenched his fists. "Of course he is. He's been rigging this tournament from the beginning."
Sage nodded grimly. "Which means he'll be watching your matches, studying your techniques. Don't reveal everything. Save your best moves for the final."
James met her gaze. "I understand. We'll hold back. But we'll still win."
Sage's lips twitched—almost a smile. "I know you will."
Serena's Match
The first semi-final match was Serena Valewood against a Grade Seven Fireblood from the Inferno Realm.
His name was Dorian Emberfall. He was tall and lean, with flaming red hair and skin that seemed to glow with inner heat. Flames licked at his fingertips as he entered the arena, his eyes burning with arrogance.
"A Frostblood against a Fireblood," Dorian announced, his voice carrying across the colosseum. "This should be interesting."
Serena's face was impassive as she stepped onto the obsidian floor. "I'll make it quick."
Dorian laughed. "Confident for someone who's about to melt."
The announcer's staff slammed against the dais. "BEGIN!"
Dorian attacked first. A wave of liquid fire erupted from his palms, surging toward Serena like a tidal wave of destruction. The crowd gasped, expecting her to be consumed.
But Serena was already moving.
She raised her hands, and a wall of ice erupted from the ground, intercepting the flames. Steam exploded across the arena, obscuring both fighters.
Dorian's eyes narrowed. "Impressive. But not enough."
He launched another blast—hotter, more focused. The flames spiraled toward Serena like a serpent, weaving through the steam with deadly precision.
Serena dodged, rolling across the obsidian floor, and countered with a barrage of ice shards. They shot toward Dorian like frozen bullets.
He deflected them with a burst of fire, his arrogance slipping just slightly. "You're fast. I'll give you that."
Serena smiled—cold, predatory. "I'm not just fast. I'm patient."
She raised her hands, and the temperature in the arena plummeted. Frost crawled across the obsidian floor, spreading toward Dorian's feet. His flames flickered, struggling against the cold.
"What are you doing?" Dorian demanded, his voice strained.
Serena's ice-blue eyes blazed. "Freezing the air around you. Your flames need oxygen to burn. I'm taking it away."
Dorian's face went pale. He launched a desperate blast of fire—but it sputtered, weakened by the freezing air.
Serena moved like lightning. She closed the distance in two heartbeats, her palm slamming into Dorian's chest. Ice exploded from the impact, encasing him in a crystalline tomb.
The crowd erupted.
Serena stepped back, her breathing steady, her expression calm. The announcer's voice rang across the arena.
"SERENA VALEWOOD WINS!"
James watched from the preparation chamber, his golden fire pulsing with approval. "That was incredible. She made it look easy."
Sage nodded. "Serena is methodical. She studies her opponents, finds their weaknesses, and exploits them. She's the perfect tactician."
Kael bounced excitedly. "THAT'S MY ALLY! GO SERENA! YOU'RE AMAZING! I LOVE YOU PLATONICALLY!"
Rourke's Match
The second semi-final match was Rourke Stonebreaker against a Grade Seven Stormblood from the Tempest Realm.
His name was Zephyr Windreaver. He was wiry and fast, with silver hair that crackled with lightning. His eyes glowed with electric energy as he entered the arena, his body crackling with power.
"A Stormblood against a Stoneheart," Zephyr mused, his voice like thunder. "I've always wanted to see if you rocks can actually move."
Rourke's face was impassive as he stepped onto the floor. "I don't move fast. But I don't need to."
The announcer's staff slammed against the dais. "BEGIN!"
Zephyr attacked first. Lightning erupted from his fingertips, streaking toward Rourke with blinding speed. The bolts slammed into the massive man's chest—but Rourke didn't flinch. He didn't even blink.
Zephyr's eyes widened. "What? That should have—"
Rourke took a step forward. His movement was slow, deliberate, unstoppable. "Is that all you've got?"
Zephyr launched another volley of lightning, then another. Each bolt hit Rourke's body with devastating force, but he absorbed the impact like rain falling on stone.
"His Stoneheart bloodline," Sage explained. "It makes him nearly indestructible. Nothing short of a Grade Nine attack can even scratch him."
James watched with awe. "He's a walking fortress."
Sage nodded. "Exactly. And Zephyr is realizing that he can't hurt him."
Zephyr, desperate, launched a massive storm—lightning, wind, and hail all converging on Rourke at once. The force of the attack shook the arena, sending shockwaves across the obsidian walls.
But when the dust cleared, Rourke was still standing. Unmarked. Unmoved.
He took another step forward. And another. And another.
Zephyr backed away, his confidence crumbling. "Stay back! Stay—"
Rourke reached him, his massive hand closing around Zephyr's throat. He lifted the Stormblood off the ground like a child.
"Yield," Rourke rumbled.
Zephyr gasped, struggling against the iron grip. "I yield! I YIELD!"
Rourke dropped him, turning and walking back to his corner without a word.
The crowd erupted in a mix of fear and admiration.
"ROURKE STONEBREAKER WINS!"
Kael pumped his fist. "THAT'S MY FRIEND! THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MOUNTAIN! I WANT TO HUG HIM BUT I'M TOO SCARED HE'LL CRUSH ME!"
James laughed. "He's not that scary."
Kael stared at him. "HE LITERALLY JUST LIFTED A GROWN MAN BY THE THROAT WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT!"
"Fair point."
Lysandra's Match
The third semi-final match was Lysandra Moonshadow against a Grade Six Windblood from the Sky Realm.
His name was Altair Zephyrus. He was lean and graceful, with silver wings sprouting from his back. He moved like the wind itself, darting across the arena with impossible speed.
"A Shadowblood against a Windblood," Altair mused, his voice light and airy. "I'll have to be faster than your shadows."
Lysandra smiled—slow, dangerous, predatory. "You can try."
The announcer's staff slammed against the dais. "BEGIN!"
Altair launched himself into the air, his wings carrying him high above the arena. He dove toward Lysandra, his blade aimed at her heart.
But Lysandra was gone.
She vanished into the shadows, reappearing a split second later behind Altair. Her dagger pressed against his spine.
"Hello," she whispered.
Altair's eyes went wide. He spun, his wings flaring—but Lysandra was already gone again.
"Where are you?" Altair demanded, his voice cracking. "Show yourself!"
Lysandra's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. "I'm right here. And here. And there. I'm everywhere you can't see."
Altair lashed out blindly, his blade slicing through empty air. Lysandra appeared behind him, her dagger slicing across his wing.
Altair screamed, crashing to the ground. Blood poured from the wound, his wing useless.
Lysandra appeared before him, her dark eyes gleaming. "Yield. Or I'll take the other wing too."
Altair's face was pale with pain and terror. "I yield. I YIELD!"
Lysandra smiled, stepping back. "Good. I didn't want to get blood on my robes."
The crowd erupted—some cheering, others booing. Lysandra had won in under a minute.
"LYSANDRA MOONSHADOW WINS!"
Kael whistled. "That was terrifying. And impressive. And really, really terrifying."
James nodded grimly. "I'm glad she's on our side."
Sage stepped forward, her voice low. "The semi-finals are over. The final match is set. James against Valerian."
James's golden fire pulsed in his chest. "And our allies?"
Sage nodded. "The rules have been bent. Each finalist is allowed to bring up to four allies into the arena. Valerian will bring his Fireblood and Stormblood. We'll bring Serena, Rourke, Lysandra, and Kael."
Kael's face went pale. "Wait—ME?! I'm a healer! I can't fight!"
"You won't fight," James said firmly. "You'll support. Heal. Watch our backs. We need you."
Kael swallowed hard. "Okay. Okay, I can do that. I can watch backs. I'm great at watching backs. I've been watching backs my whole life—"
"Kael." James placed a hand on his shoulder. "We've got this. Together."
Kael took a shaky breath. "Together."
James looked at his allies—Serena, cold and focused. Rourke, massive and unbreakable. Lysandra, shadowy and deadly. Kael, brave despite his fear.
"We face Valerian tomorrow," James said. "Rest. Prepare. And remember—we're not just fighting for ourselves. We're fighting for everyone who's been crushed by the Blackwoods. Everyone who's ever been told they're worthless. Everyone who's ever been told they can't win."
He paused, the golden fire blazing around his fists.
"We're going to show them that they're wrong. All of them."
