THE LAST SAVE

The cold condensate trench narrowed as it slipped beneath the low concrete lintel, forcing Arin and Mira into a deep crouch.

The water here was calf-deep, flowing at a steady two knots toward the western dark. Moving with the current at a disciplined, braced walk to keep from slipping on the submerged silt, they covered sixty meters over ninety seconds before the channel emptied over a bronze weir plate into an open drainage sump.

The cold was a welcome relief against the lingering phantom burn of the cracking hall. Every step through the running water leeched the remaining furnace heat from their boots, soothing the bandaged laceration on Arin's calf.Full novel: THE LAST SAVE — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Arin braced his hands on the slippery iron curb, hauled his boots out of the water, and rolled onto dry flagstones.

Mira climbed out beside him, wringing out the wet cuffs of her trousers with quick, efficient twists of her hands.

They were crouched in a narrow maintenance pocket off the main bore. Beyond an archway of riveted iron beams lay the Central Transport Tube.

The space was an engineering marvel of continuous, subterranean haulage.

The tunnel was a circular bore six meters in diameter, lined with interlocking segments of ribbed cast-iron tubbing bolted into the bedrock. Running down the center of the floor was a heavy-gauge dual-rail track that plunged into the gloom at an aggressive eight-degree downward grade.

Between the rails, a continuous, two-inch braided steel traction cable hummed with terrifying mechanical life.

The cable moved constantly at roughly four meters per second—a relentless, oil-slicked serpent gliding over bronze guide-sheaves spaced every ten meters along the ties. The low-frequency whine of the cable resonating through the iron floor plates was joined by the rhythmic clack-clack-clack of counterbalanced tension pulleys echoing from deep down the bore.

"Endless-rope haulage," Arin murmured, his eyes tracking the moving wire. "Continuous loop driven by a stationary winding engine somewhere in the lower works."

"It connects Cracking Battery 3 directly to the fuel depots of Level 3," Mira whispered, peering around the structural rib. "The Vanguard doesn't use pack mules or labor gangs to move refined product down the incline. They clamp heavy rolling cars straight to that wire."

Arin shifted his position to scan the staging area along the track.

Mounted beside the rails was an elevated timber staging dock lit by two caged kerosene lamps. Stacked along the platform were dozens of heavy, riveted steel barrels banded with hoop-iron—distilled kerosene, naphtha, and heavy industrial lubricants.

Resting on the rails beside the platform was a haulage train: three low-slung, heavy iron flat-dollies chained together, loaded with twelve sealed fuel drums each.

At the front of the lead dolly was the mechanical link: a heavy, forged-steel screw-clamp mechanism—an industrial grip-jaw positioned directly over the moving haulage cable. The massive screw-handle was currently backed off, leaving the jaws open; the entire three-car train was held stationary on the eight-degree incline by a pair of heavy oak sprags wedged into the spokes of the iron wheels.

Two men in stained canvas jackets stood on the staging dock, checking the chain lashings around the fuel barrels.

Arin focused his Perception through the amber lamplight:

Neither man was armored like Tyr. They wore greasy leather aprons, heavy work mittens, and carried short iron pry-bars at their belts. A pair of recurve hunting bows hung unstrung from the timber awning above their workbench, well out of immediate reach.

"Loaders," Mira evaluated softly. "They prep the fuel dollies, drop the sprags, screw down the cable clamp, and ride the brake-platform down to the intermediate transfer station."

"How often do they send a train?" Arin asked.

"Every fifteen or twenty minutes," she replied. "Level 3 burns fuel constantly to power the thermal separators. If the supply lags, the pressure in the lower cracking jackets drops."

Arin knelt against the cold iron tubbing, letting his expanded respiratory engine quietly restore his physical reserves while he analyzed the mechanics.

Eighty-four stamina. The numbers were returning to a comfortable tactical buffer.

He looked down the tracks. The iron tube stretched straight into the blackness, curving out of sight three hundred meters down the gradient.

"Walking the tube on foot is out," Arin said, his voice flat. "The clearance between the rail cars and the cast-iron wall is less than half a meter. If a loaded train comes down behind us while we’re on the ties, we get sheared in two against the tubbing bolts."

"And if the Vanguard sentries at the intermediate post see foot-traffic on the tracks, they drop an iron drag-chain across the rail to derail whatever's coming," Mira added. "Our only route down is on that train."

"We can't take both loaders without noise," Arin said, watching Varn and Hesk secure the final turnbuckle on the drum chains. "An unstrung bow takes four seconds to string, but an iron pry-bar striking a hollow steel fuel drum will ring down this tube like a church bell."

Mira looked at the loaded flat-dollies. "The drums are packed three-wide, four-deep on each car. Between the rows, there's a dead-space—a recessed hollow above the central spine of the carriage chassis. If we crawl between the third and fourth rows of the rear dolly, the curvature of the barrels will break their line of sight from the front brake-platform."

Arin mapped the spatial geometry:

* The rear dolly was thirty paces from their maintenance pocket; the front car and the loaders were another twenty meters beyond it along the elevated dock.

* The loaders were focused entirely on tensioning the lead clamp at the front of the train.

* The ambient noise in the tube was loud: the continuous four-meter-per-second rush of the traction cable over the sheaves, combined with the draft roaring down the bore, created an acoustic mask of roughly seventy decibels.

* The train would begin moving the moment Varn screwed the clamp shut and Hesk knocked the oak sprags from the wheels.

"The approach," Arin whispered. "The floor between here and the rear car is bare iron ballast. If a boot kicks gravel, they turn."

Mira reached to her belt and pulled a small, greasy canvas rag from her pouch—a discarded scrap salvaged from the culvert floor.

"Not gravel," she said. "The cable guide-sheaves have open lubrication pans along the centerline. The floor between the rails is caked in two inches of thick, acoustic black grease."

Arin’s eyes narrowed, catching the logic instantly.

A two-inch bed of industrial machine grease between the rails was a traction hazard, but it was an acoustic deadener. Stepping into the track cradle and moving directly over the ties would mute footfalls entirely.

"We move the second they engage the screw-clamp," Arin said. "When the jaws bite that moving wire, the friction will scream for a few seconds before the train syncs speed. That is our boarding window."

Up on the staging dock, Varn wiped his oily hands on his apron and reached for the heavy cross-handle of the forged-steel cable clamp.

"Tensioning car one!" Varn bellowed over the whine of the cable. "Stand by the sprags, Hesk!"

Hesk picked up a heavy wooden mallet, stepping down onto the track beside the rear wheels of the lead dolly.

Arin reached back, checking the retention lashings on the Salvaged Pike Head and ensuring his pack sat flush against his center of gravity. His hound-bone dagger was loosened a fraction in its sheath, ready for an immediate draw if the boarding failed.

Three unallocated points remained safe in reserve.

Arin crouched at the edge of the archway, his boots aligned with the thick, black grease bed between the rails. Beside him, Mira lowered her center of gravity, her breathing matching the rhythmic whine of the cable sheaves.

On the platform, Varn threw his weight onto the iron cross-handle, driving the hardened steel jaws downward into the moving four-meter-per-second braided wire.

SCREEEEEEECH.

A shower of white-hot steel friction sparks erupted beneath the lead car as the jaws bit into the moving rope.
