The screech of the screw-clamp was deafening—a jagged, metallic scream that rebounded off the cast-iron tubbing, filling the bore with an acoustic wall of white noise.
Down by the lead car's wheels, Hesk swung his wooden mallet.
THWACK-CRACK.
The oak sprags shattered under the blow, their splintered wedges spitting out from between the iron spokes.
The three-car train shuddered as loaded fuel drums and chassis plates broke static inertia. The slack in the link-chains between the cars snapped taut with a sequence of violent iron clangs—clink-CLANK-clank—and the entire assembly began to lurch forward down the incline, dragging against the moving cable as the jaws fought to equalize speed.
A few seconds of friction scream.
"Move!" Arin breathed.
He didn't sprint in a high, bounding stride. Running heel-to-toe on two inches of acoustic black grease was a guaranteed slip-and-fall into the guide-sheaves.
Arin dropped his center of gravity, keeping his boots flat-footed and driving his momentum directly into the wooden ties. The thick, viscous grease sucked at the soles of his boots with wet resistance, deadening the sound of their rush while threatening to pull his ankles off-line with every stride:
> [HIGH-TRACTION ANAEROBIC BURST: LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY]
> [CURRENT STAMINA: 84 → 72/105]
Mira moved two paces to his left, her lighter frame skimming over the tie heads with fluid, predatory precision.
The rear dolly was already rolling, gathering speed with every second.
Arin crossed the gap in seconds. He reached the tail-end of the third car just as the lead clamp finished biting and the friction scream died into the deep, rhythmic drone of the moving wire.
The rear car’s cast-iron buffer plate was sliding away from him, slick with grease and accelerating down the grade.
Arin lunged forward.
His gloved right hand clamped around the cold iron rim of the rear car's chassis frame. The sudden drag of the accelerating mass yanked violently on his right arm, pulling hard against his knit deltoid:
> [ISOMETRIC LOAD ABSORPTION: ENDURANCE 7 CHECK]
> [LOAD DISTRIBUTED: SCAR TISSUE STABLE]
> [CURRENT STAMINA: 72 → 66/105]
His reinforced frame took the strain. His boots left the greased ties, kicking outward into empty air for a fraction of a second before he planted his heels onto the rear bumper shelf.
Beside him, Mira swung onto the corner iron with a light, effortless snap of her core.
"Up," Arin whispered, his voice completely masked by the rush of the tunnel draft. "Between the barrels."
The deck was packed three drums wide and four deep, their curved sides leaving a narrow hollow along the carriage's central spine.
Mira slid into the hollow first, pulling her limbs tight against her ribs.
Arin unslung his pack with practiced economy, shoved the canvas bag ahead of him into the crevice, and wormed his torso between the cold steel flanks of the third and fourth rows.
The fit was suffocatingly tight.
To his left and right, the rolled iron of the fuel drums smelled of volatile petroleum distillate, sharp mineral spirits, and sulfurous naphtha. Looking up, all he could see was the heavy transport chain crossing over the barrels, vibrating under immense tension like a plucked bass string.
The train surged as the lead clamp fully locked onto the cable, plunging into the dark along the unrelenting downward grade.
Arin flattened his cheek against the steel deck plate, taking deep, measured breaths through his nose.
> [CONCEALMENT ACHIEVED: LINE-OF-SIGHT OCCLUDED]
> [CURRENT HP: 84/125]
> [CURRENT STAMINA: 66/105]
Up at the front of the train, the silhouette of Varn leaned against the manual screw-brake handle on the lead car's platform, his back turned to the cargo. Hesk had remained on the staging dock to clear the splintered sprags.
One hostile on the train. Level 3. Unaware.
For several minutes, the train rattled through the dark.
The deeper draft cooled the air against his face, clearing the salt and soot from his pores. His altered physiology quietly reclaimed what the sprint had taken from him:
> [STAMINA RECOVERY: +26]
> [CURRENT STAMINA: 66 → 92/105]
His stamina was back in the green. The superficial laceration on his left calf, bound tight with the shirt scrap, remained cold and dormant.
Then, through the rhythmic clatter of the iron wheels, Arin’s heightened Perception picked up a sharp, discordant resonance.
Ting. Ting-ting. Ting.
It wasn't machinery. It was a high-tensile steel wire vibrating against the wall of the tube.
Arin shifted his head slightly, peering through the gap between the barrels toward the curved wall of the tunnel.
Bolted to the cast-iron tubbing at chest height was a continuous wire line connected to small, mechanical trip-hammers—an acoustic telegraph run parallel to the track.
The trip-hammers were firing.
Ting-ting-ting. Three sharp pulses, followed by a pause, then three pulses again.
Up on the front platform, Varn straightened from his casual lean.
He reached up, grasped a brass horn hanging from the brake-station stanchion, and pressed his ear to an acoustic receiver funnel bolted to the chassis.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Acoustic relay," Mira’s whisper barely reached his ear from the shadows between the drums. "The staging dock just got the signal from Cracking Battery 3."
"Tyr?" Arin asked.
"Or the Redoubt," Mira breathed. "The Vanguard uses wire-pull trip-hammers to signal downstream stations when unauthorized movement is logged on the upper levels. Three strikes means quarantine incoming traffic."
Up ahead, through the mist of the descending bore, a cluster of dull red lights appeared.
The tunnel flared outward into a wider, arched vault: the Intermediate Transfer Siding.
Arin caught the geometry through the narrow gaps in the barrel flanks:
* The main track continued straight down the incline toward Level 3.
* A manual turnout switch was set ahead, splitting off into an emergency arrestor siding packed with crushed slag and counterweighted buffer stops.
* Standing beside the turnout lever was a Vanguard checkpoint—a sandbag revetment manned by three figures holding long iron bars and hooded lanterns.
* Strung across the main rails, resting on low timber trestles ten paces past the switch, was a heavy, forged-iron drag-chain studded with railroad spikes.
At this speed, the drag-chain would catch the lead trucks and throw the entire train into the wall.
On the front platform, Varn reached for the heavy screw-clamp cross-handle, throwing his weight counterclockwise to disengage the cable grip.
CLANK-CLANK.
The jaws loosened.
The train detached from the traction cable. Gravity had it now. Rolling free on the incline, the three cars began accelerating downhill, hurtling straight toward the red lanterns of the turnout siding.
"He's taking the siding," Mira hissed, her hand finding the hilt of her shortsword. "He's putting us right into their barricade."
Arin looked at the massive steel fuel drum right beside his shoulder.
Stamped into the iron head in faded white stenciling was a single chemical designation:
> [NAPHTHA FRACTION — GRADE 1]
> [FLASH POINT: -10°C]
> [CAUTION: HIGHLY VOLATILE LIQUID / VAPOR HAZARD]
He reached down to his right hip. He closed his hand around the cold, dense steel body of the salvaged pike head.
Heavy enough.
Arin didn't look at the barricade. He looked at the heavy screw-brake linkage running along the floor frame beneath the drums.
"He doesn't get to stop this train," Arin said.
