Jinshu washed her face clean, removed the heavy wedding dress, and changed into comfortable clothes.
She sat casually at the table, which was laden with a variety of dishes, far better than what Ah Hua’s family ate. Jinshu picked up her chopsticks and began eating. Chen Fuzhou had already been sitting cross-legged on the bed cultivating since she was washing up. Hearing the crisp sound of chopsticks clinking against porcelain plates, he opened his eyes and said, “Tomorrow, we’ll go find Yang Dafu first. This family is related to him as cousins.”
Jinshu swallowed a piece of meat in her mouth. “No wonder their life is so prosperous.”
Under the glow of red candles and flickering lamplight, no one would have expected that in this room, the young couple—one was devouring a chicken leg as if she had been starved in a past life, while the other simply smiled faintly, watching with great interest as she ate heartily.
Jinshu ate with genuine contentment. Only after finishing did she realize that the two of them were now alone in the room. Outside, red lanterns hung brightly, and the room was decorated festively. Night had fallen, and it was time to rest.
Chen Fuzhou had already laid out bedding on the floor and said considerately, “Senior Sister, you take the bed. Just be careful at night and don’t step on me.”
Jinshu felt a bit embarrassed and repeatedly declined. “How can that be? I’m your senior sister and older than you. I should be the one giving way to you. Let me sleep on the floor.”
Chen Fuzhou shook his head. “Senior Sister, why argue with me over this? It’s getting late. Let’s rest soon.”
With that, he sat cross-legged on the floor in his clothes and closed his eyes. In the faint candlelight, the shadows on his face were distinct, accentuating his handsome features. Sitting on the bright red bedding, he didn’t look vulgar in the slightest.
Jinshu stared at him blankly for a moment, then stopped arguing. She carefully blew out the candle and climbed into bed.
The room quickly fell into darkness and silence, with only the soft sounds of their breathing audible.
The next day, Jinshu was drowsily awakened by Chen Fuzhou. They then followed the tedious rituals to visit various aunts and relatives. Finally, in the afternoon, Jinshu’s “mother-in-law” spoke up: “You two should go pay your respects to Uncle Dafu. It’s thanks to his care that we can live such a good life.”
She lowered her voice and cautioned, “Be careful not to say the wrong thing! Their family just had a baby girl, and they’re not happy about it.”
The two exchanged a glance, knowing their opportunity had come, and obediently agreed.
At that time, Yang Dafu had only been village chief for three years, and his home was still relatively modest. Fortunately, two laborers guided them, or they might have truly gotten lost.
Chen Fuzhou knocked on the door with gifts in hand and said with a smile, “Uncle Dafu, we’ve come to see you.”
Yang Dafu arrogantly looked Jinshu up and down, making her skin crawl. To avoid giving herself away, she kept her head lowered, pretending to be shy and timid.
After staring for a long while, Yang Dafu finally spoke. “This new bride of yours looks thin and small. I wonder if she can bear a son?”
Chen Fuzhou replied with an ingratiating smile, “That’s a matter for the future. No rush, no rush.”
Hearing this, Yang Dafu’s expression instantly changed, and he lectured, “What do you, a young fool, know? If she can’t bear a son, even if she were a fairy, she’d be useless!”
Chen Fuzhou quickly nodded with a foolish grin. Yang Dafu took the gifts from his hands and said irritably, “I have guests today, so I won’t invite you in. You two can go back now.”
The two quickly acknowledged and turned around, only to hear the door behind them slam shut with a loud “bang.”
Jinshu finally looked up and complained, “They won’t even let us in?”
“Let’s go find Senior Sister and the others first. It’s better to act together when everyone is gathered.”
At this point, Jinshu grew troubled again: “But we have no clues at all. Are we just searching for a needle in a haystack?”
Chen Fuzhou glanced at her. Today, Jinshu had styled her hair in the traditional married woman’s bun, and the slightly old-fashioned clothes she wore actually brought out an unusual charm on her. She frowned tightly, picking at the rough embroidery on her sleeve with her nails, a sight that drew sidelong glances from many passersby.
Chen Fuzhou reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her toward a small path nearby. “If it were only Senior Sister, it would indeed be like searching for a needle in a haystack, but with me here, it’s different. This illusion technique is nothing more than a leaf blocking my sight. In the illusion realm, wherever there is a place where the Spiritual Power clashes with that of the realm’s master, that’s where Senior Sister and the others are.”
Jinshu asked curiously, “What’s the principle behind it?”
Chen Fuzhou held her wrist while using the Soul-Severing Curse within him to sense the surrounding Spiritual Power, all the while patiently explaining, “Senior Sister and the others are different from ordinary mortals like Yang Dafu. Forcing them to become part of the illusion realm is not permitted by the Heavenly Dao. The master of the illusion realm has to withstand the resistance of the Cultivators’ own Spiritual Power. Where the two Spiritual Powers intersect is the chaotic zone of this illusion realm. Aside from the two of us, there are three other chaotic zones—naturally, that’s where Senior Sister and the others are.”
Jinshu sighed, “Sigh, if I didn’t know better, I’d think you were the senior brother. How come I don’t know anything?”
Chen Fuzhou withdrew his gaze from the sky. “Senior Sister is better than me in many ways. I just happen to be skilled in this particular area.”
“Don’t try to comfort me.”
“Really.” Jinshu was momentarily distracted by the dimple on the side of his face, then heard him continue, “Isn’t Senior Sister much better at swordsmanship than I am? I’ll still need Senior Sister to protect me in the future.”
That was certainly true. Jinshu patted her chest cheerfully. “Don’t worry, Junior Brother. With me here, I guarantee no one will lay a finger on you!”
Chen Fuzhou lowered his head to look at her. “Then I’ll thank Senior Sister in advance.”
Jinshu shook off his grip and crossed her arms, smiling. “How about we go check out Yang Gui’s house first? After all, aside from him, we don’t know anyone else in this village.”
At this time, Yang Gui and A Cui had just gotten married not long ago. They had hastily built a small courtyard on the outskirts of the village. Usually, A Cui took care of household matters while Yang Gui went out to find work. Though their life was poor, they managed to get by.
Relying on the memories of this body, Jinshu effortlessly found Yang Gui’s residence. This small courtyard was noticeably newer than the one they had seen before, but it wasn’t much better.
“Wait here. I’ll go in first, and you follow behind me. A Cui and the owner of this body used to be neighbors and had a good relationship. I’ll just say I just got married and happened to pass by, bringing my husband to visit her.” Jinshu stood outside the small courtyard, instructing Chen Fuzhou.
“Isn’t that Ah Hua?” A familiar female voice came from inside. Jinshu quickly stopped talking, looked up, and called out with a smile, “Sister A Cui!”
“What brings you here? And who is this beside you?” “A Cui,” who looked exactly like Yan Lin, hurried out from the courtyard to open the gate while sizing up Chen Fuzhou from head to toe.
A look of surprise appeared on Jinshu’s face. Chen Fuzhou whispered, “It seems Senior Sister is playing the role of A Cui. I wonder if Senior Brother is here too.”
Jinshu quickly adjusted her expression, naturally wrapping her arm around Chen Fuzhou’s and leaning her whole body against him. With a shy expression, she said, “This is my husband. We just got married yesterday and were just about to come in to see you.”
Chen Fuzhou was taken aback for a moment, tilting his head to look at Jinshu. Her eyes were squinted into crescent moons from smiling, her long eyelashes casting shadows on her cheeks where fine downy hair was visible, making her look just like a little bird.
A Cui chuckled teasingly, “You two really are a perfect match.”
The sudden address left Chen Fuzhou still dazed. Sensing his gaze from above, Jinshu pinched him on the back and softly squeezed out a few words from between her lips: “Junior Brother, don’t forget who we are right now.”
A Cui had just opened the courtyard gate. Thinking she needed to quickly wake up Senior Sister, Jinshu didn’t stand on ceremony: “Sister A Cui, let’s go inside and chat for a while.”
She responded warmly, “Come in, come in! It’s been so long since I’ve seen you. Usually, there aren’t many people around here, so now that you’ve come, I certainly won’t let you leave easily. Your brother-in-law won’t be home until later. Stay here for a while, and the two families can have dinner together later.”
Jinshu tugged on Chen Fuzhou’s arm as they followed A Cui inside. A Cui seemed especially happy because of the familiar visitors.
Walking behind her, Jinshu lowered her voice and said, “Since Senior Sister and Senior Brother are here, these two are probably connected to the strangeness of the village. Maybe everything they told us before was a lie. What should we do later?”
“I’ve already drawn the talisman in advance. Just stick it on her forehead when she’s not paying attention.”
Jinshu acknowledged with a sound of agreement. A Cui pushed open the door to the house and turned around, somewhat apologetically saying, “My home is a bit simple. I hope you don’t mind.”
Jinshu hurriedly waved her hand. The three entered the room, where the furnishings were not much different from those several years later—even the swaddling clothes on the bed were the same.
From within the swaddling clothes came the clear cries of an infant. A Cui hurried forward, picked up the bundle, and held it tightly in her arms, revealing a small baby’s fair face. Gently rocking the bundle, she whispered soothingly, “Don’t cry, Zhen Zhen. Mama’s here. Be good, Zhen Zhen.”
After a while, the child in her arms finally stopped crying. Holding the baby, she sat down beside Jinshu, with the unique tenderness and shyness of a new mother, and said softly, “She’s still so young and cries often. I’m really sorry.”
The infant was curled up in the swaddling clothes, tears still hanging at the corners of her eyes, looking nothing like the A Zhen from several years later.
Jinshu grinned and praised, “So adorable.”
No mother dislikes hearing praise for her child. A Cui smiled even more happily and modestly said, “You’ll have such a lovely child too someday.”
Jinshu’s expression turned somewhat awkward. She forced a dry laugh and evasively replied, “Haha, it’s still too early to talk about that. Maybe we’re not even planning to have children at all.”
A Cui’s expression grew peculiar. She frowned and said, “Don’t ever say that outside in the future. Be careful someone reports you to the village chief.”
These words left Jinshu utterly confused. She asked, “What?”
But A Cui hesitated and seemed unwilling to say more.
Jinshu wanted to ask more, but she felt a piece of paper being pressed into her palm, and the soft flesh of her hand was pinched hard. She hissed in pain and heard Chen Fuzhou’s low voice: “Don’t say any more to her.”
A Cui, seeing the two whispering secretively, asked, “What are you two talking about?”
Jinshu replied, “Nothing. My husband just thinks the child looks adorable and wants to hold him.”
A Cui readily agreed with a cheerful “Alright,” standing up and gently passing Yang Zhen’s swaddling clothes to Chen Fuzhou. As she bent down to rise, Jinshu swiftly pressed the talisman paper in her hand onto A Cui’s forehead.
A Cui let out a sharp “Ah!” and fell backward. Jinshu, startled, quickly caught her and asked anxiously, “Why did she react so strongly?”
Chen Fuzhou pondered, “Could it be that the master of this illusion realm placed some protective mechanism on her, causing it to clash with my ‘Dispel’ talisman?”
“What do we do now?”
“Although the master of this illusion realm possesses greater Spiritual Power than I do, they are not well-versed in this art. It just means my ‘Dispel’ talisman will take effect a bit later. Let’s wait quietly.”
Before his words faded, an urgent shout rang out: “What are you doing? Let go of my wife and child!”
Jinshu looked up and saw Yang Gui, who resembled Bu Quegan, charging toward her angrily, making a move to snatch the unconscious A Cui from her arms. Without a second thought, she shouted, “Quick, knock out Senior Brother!”

Chapter 23
Jinshu washed her face, shed the heavy wedding gown, and changed into more comfortable clothes.
She sat casually at the table, which was covered in a variety of dishes—far better than what she had eaten at Ah Hua’s house. Jinshu picked up her chopsticks and began shoveling food into her mouth. Chen Fuzhou had already been sitting cross-legged on the bed cultivating while she washed up; hearing the crisp clinking of chopsticks against porcelain, he opened his eyes and said, “Tomorrow, we’ll go find Yang Dafu first. This family is related to him as cousins.”
Jinshu swallowed a piece of meat. “No wonder their life is so well-fed.”
Under the glow of red candles and flickering lamplight, no one would have expected this young couple in the room to be like this: one was gnawing on a chicken leg like the reincarnation of a starved ghost, while the other simply watched her feast with a slight, interested smile.
Jinshu ate with great satisfaction. It was only after she finished that she realized they were the only two people in the room. Large red lanterns hung outside, and the interior was decorated with festive cheer. It was late at night, the time for sleep.
Chen Fuzhou had long since spread a layer of bedding on the floor. Being considerate, he said, “Senior Sister, you take the bed. Just be careful during the night not to step on me.”
Jinshu felt a bit embarrassed and repeatedly declined. “How can we do that? I’m the Senior Sister and older than you; I should be the one yielding to you. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
Chen Fuzhou shook his head. “Why argue with me over this, Senior Sister? It’s late; you should sleep soon.”
With that, he sat cross-legged on the floor in his clothes and closed his eyes. In the faint candlelight, the shadows on his face were distinct, accentuating his sharp features. Sitting on the bright red bedding, he didn’t look the least bit vulgar.
Jinshu stared at him blankly for a moment before giving up the argument. She carefully blew out the candle and climbed onto the bed.
The room was instantly plunged into darkness, leaving only the sound of two people breathing softly.
The next day, a sleepy-eyed Jinshu was woken up by Chen Fuzhou. Following the tedious etiquette of the village, they visited various aunts and distant relatives. Finally, in the afternoon, Jinshu’s “mother-in-law” spoke up: “Go pay your respects to your Uncle Dafu as well. We rely on his care for our good life.”
She lowered her voice and warned, “Be careful not to say the wrong thing! Their family just had a girl, and he’s not feeling very happy about it.”
The two exchanged a look, knowing their chance had come, and obediently agreed.
At this time, Yang Dafu had only been the village chief for three years, and his home was still relatively modest. Fortunately, two laborers helped lead the way, otherwise the two might truly have been unable to find it.
Chen Fuzhou knocked on the door while carrying gifts and smiled. “Uncle Dafu, we’ve come to see you.”
Yang Dafu scanned Jinshu arrogantly from head to toe, making her skin crawl. To avoid blowing their cover, she could only keep her head down, acting shy and timid.
After staring for a long while, Yang Dafu finally spoke. “This new bride of yours looks thin and small. I wonder if she can even give birth to a son?”
Chen Fuzhou laughed apologetically. “That’s a matter for the future. No rush, no rush.”
Upon hearing this, Yang Dafu’s expression shifted instantly. He lectured, “What do you young punks know? If she can’t produce a son, it doesn’t matter if the wife is a celestial maiden—she’s useless!”
Chen Fuzhou hurriedly nodded with a silly smile. Yang Dafu took the gifts from his hands and said grumpily, “I still have guests today, so I won’t invite you in. You two head back for now.”
The two quickly agreed. Just as they turned around, the heavy door slammed shut behind them with a “thud.”
Only then did Jinshu look up, complaining, “He wouldn’t even let us in?”
“Let’s find Senior Sister and the others first. It’ll be easier to act once everyone is gathered.”
At this mention, Jinshu looked troubled again. “We have no clues at all. Isn’t it like looking for a needle in a haystack?”
Chen Fuzhou glanced at her. Following local custom, Jinshu’s hair was pinned up in a woman’s style today. The slightly old-fashioned clothes actually gave her an unusual sort of charm. She was frowning deeply, her nails picking at the coarse patterns on her sleeve. Her appearance drew side-glances from many passersby.
Chen Fuzhou reached out, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her toward a side path. “If it were just you, Senior Sister, it would certainly be a needle in a haystack, but with me, it’s different. This illusion technique is but a leaf blocking the eye before me. In an illusion realm, the places where the Spiritual Power of the illusion’s master clashes with others are where Senior Sister and the rest are located.”
Jinshu asked curiously, “What’s the principle behind that?”
Chen Fuzhou held her wrist, using the Soul-Severing Curse within his body to sense the surrounding Spiritual Power, while not forgetting to explain patiently, “Senior Sister and the others are different from mortals like Yang Dafu. Forcibly merging them into the illusion is not permitted by the Heavenly Dao. The master of the illusion must endure the resistance of a Cultivator’s own Spiritual Power. The point where the two powers intersect is the chaotic zone of this illusion realm. Aside from the two of us, there are three other chaotic zones. Naturally, those must be Senior Sister and the others.”
Jinshu sighed. “Sigh, if people didn’t know better, they’d think you were the Senior Brother. How is it I don’t know anything?”
Chen Fuzhou withdrew his gaze from the horizon. “There are many areas where Senior Sister is stronger than me. I just happen to be skilled in this particular field.”
“Don’t try to comfort me.”
“It’s true.” Jinshu was momentarily dazed by the dimples on his cheeks as he continued, “Isn’t Senior Sister’s swordsmanship much better than mine? I’ll have to rely on Senior Sister to protect me in the future.”
That was true enough. Jinshu patted her chest happily. “Don’t worry, Junior Brother. With me around, I guarantee I won’t let them lay a finger on you!”
Chen Fuzhou looked down at her. “Then I must thank you, Senior Sister.”
Jinshu pulled her wrist away, crossed her arms, and said with a smile, “How about we go check out Yang Gui’s house first? After all, besides him, we don’t know anyone else in this village.”
At this time, Yang Gui and A Cui had only been married a short while. They had built a rough little courtyard on the outskirts of the village. Usually, A Cui handled domestic matters while Yang Gui went out to find work. Though their life was poor, they managed to get by.
Based on the memories of her current body, Jinshu found Yang Gui’s residence without effort. This courtyard was much newer than the one they had seen before, though not much better.
“I’ll go in first, you follow behind me. A Cui and the person I’m inhabiting were neighbors and on good terms. We’ll just say I just got married and brought my husband to visit while passing by,” Jinshu instructed Chen Fuzhou as they stood outside the courtyard.
“Isn’t this Ah Hua?” A familiar female voice reached them. Jinshu immediately stopped talking and looked up with a smile. “Sister A Cui!”
“Why have you come over? And who is this beside you?” “A Cui,” who looked exactly like Yan Lin, jogged out of the yard to open the gate while sizing up Chen Fuzhou from head to toe.
A hint of surprise appeared on Jinshu’s face. Chen Fuzhou whispered, “It seems Eldest Senior Sister is playing A Cui. I wonder if Eldest Senior Brother is here as well.”
Jinshu quickly adjusted her expression and naturally clung to Chen Fuzhou’s arm, leaning her whole body against him. With a bashful look, she said, “This is my husband. We just got married yesterday. We were just saying we should come in to see you.”
Chen Fuzhou froze for a moment, turning his head to look at Jinshu. Her eyes were crinkled into slits from her smile, and her long eyelashes cast shadows on her soft cheeks. She looked like a little bird.
A Cui teased with a smile, “The two of you really make a well-matched couple.”
The abrupt address left Chen Fuzhou momentarily stunned. Jinshu felt his gaze on the top of her head and pinched him behind his back, squeezing a few words out through her teeth: “Junior Brother, don’t forget who we are right now.”
A Cui had just opened the gate. Jinshu, wanting to wake up her Eldest Senior Sister quickly, didn’t stand on ceremony. “Sister A Cui, let’s go inside and chat for a bit.”
She responded enthusiastically, “Come in, come in! I haven’t seen you in ages, and hardly anyone comes by here. Now that you’re here, I won’t let you leave easily. Your brother-in-law will be home later; sit for a while, and our two families can have dinner together.”
Jinshu pulled Chen Fuzhou’s arm as they followed A Cui. A Cui seemed exceptionally happy because of the visit from an acquaintance.
As they followed her, Jinshu lowered her voice. “Since Eldest Senior Sister and Eldest Senior Brother are here, they must be tied to the village’s strangeness. Maybe everything they told us before were lies. What do we do now?”
“I’ve already prepared the talismans. Just stick one on her forehead when she isn’t looking.”
Jinshu gave an affirmative hum. A Cui pushed open the door and turned around, looking slightly embarrassed. “My home is a bit simple. Please don’t mind it.”
Jinshu waved her hands dismissively. The three entered the house. The furnishings weren’t much different from what they would be several years later; even the swaddling cloth on the bed was the same one.
The crisp cry of an infant came from the bundle. A Cui stepped forward quickly and picked up the swaddling cloth, cradling it tightly in her arms. The fair face of a small baby was revealed. A Cui rocked the bundle gently, cooing softly, “Zhen Zhen, don’t cry. Mommy is here. Be a good girl, Zhen Zhen.”
After a while, the child in her arms finally stopped crying. She sat down next to Jinshu, holding the baby with the maternal affection and shyness typical of a new mother. “She’s so young and cries all the time. I’m so sorry.”
The infant was a tiny lump huddled in the cloth, tears still hanging from the corners of her eyes. She looked nothing like the Yang Zhen from several years later.
Jinshu praised with a grin, “So cute.”
No mother dislikes hearing praise for her child. A Cui smiled even more brightly and said modestly, “You two will have such a cute child as well.”
Jinshu’s expression turned awkward. She gave a couple of dry laughs and brushed it off. “Haha, it’s a bit early for that. Maybe the two of us aren’t planning on having children at all.”
A Cui’s expression turned strange. She frowned and said, “Don’t ever say things like that outside. Be careful, or someone might report you to the village chief.”
These words left Jinshu utterly confused. She asked, “What?”
But A Cui was hesitant and refused to say more.
Jinshu wanted to ask further, but she felt a piece of paper being pressed into her palm, and the soft flesh of her hand was squeezed hard. She hissed in pain and heard Chen Fuzhou’s low voice: “Don’t talk to her anymore.”
Seeing them whispering and acting secretive, A Cui asked, “What are you two talking about?”
Jinshu replied, “Nothing. My husband thought the child looked cute and wanted to hold her.”
A Cui readily agreed. She stood up and gently handed the bundle containing Yang Zhen to Chen Fuzhou. As she bent over to stand up, Jinshu acted with lightning speed and pressed the talisman paper onto A Cui’s forehead.
A Cui let out a gasp and fell backward. Startled, Jinshu caught her and asked frantically, “Why did she have such a strong reaction?”
Chen Fuzhou pondered. “Could the master of this illusion realm have placed some protection mechanism on her that clashed with my Dispelling Talisman?”
“What do we do now?”
“Although the master of this illusion has more power than me, they aren’t proficient in this technique. It just means my Dispelling Talisman will take a bit longer to work. We just need to wait quietly.”
Before he could finish, an anxious shout rang out: “What are you doing? Let go of my wife and child!”
Jinshu looked up to see Yang Gui, who looked exactly like Bu Quegan, rushing toward them aggressively. He looked ready to snatch the unconscious A Cui from Jinshu’s arms. Ignoring everything else, Jinshu shouted, “Hurry up and knock Eldest Senior Brother out!”
Chen Fuzhou had already stepped forward two paces in perfect sync with her voice. He held the swaddling cloth tightly in one hand and grabbed the back of Yang Gui’s neck with the other. Yang Gui swatted his hand away with a slap.
Chen Fuzhou asked in surprise, “What’s going on?”
Jinshu settled A Cui on the ground and stood up to grab Yang Gui’s shoulder. “Are you stupid, Junior Brother? Did you forget we have no Spiritual Power in this illusion?”
Chen Fuzhou didn’t stop, kicking at the back of Yang Gui’s knee. “I was busy soothing the baby, so I really did forget.”
It took a great deal of effort for the two of them to finally subdue the grown man. Yang Gui was pinned to the ground, rambling incessantly, “What do you want? Please, let my wife and child go! Just do whatever you want to me!”
Jinshu was panting from the effort of holding down this man, who was strong as a bull. She wiped the sweat from her forehead. Not wanting to deal with him, she urged, “Hurry, hurry! Bring him back to his senses. This is exhausting.”
Still holding the child, Chen Fuzhou ignored Bu Quegan. “I’ll have to trouble Senior Sister to find it for me. It’s in the front of my robes. I’m holding the child, so it’s inconvenient.”
Jinshu pursed her lips, but Yang Gui’s voice next to her ear was so loud she couldn’t bear it another second. In one quick motion, she reached her hand into the front of Chen Fuzhou’s clothes.
Chen Fuzhou hadn’t thought much of it when he made the request, but he regretted it the moment Jinshu reached in. His Senior Sister’s hand was fumbling around his chest, and the warm touch was extremely palpable through the thin fabric. Chen Fuzhou felt his earlobes burning hot. He could only grit his teeth and say, “Can Senior Sister be a bit faster? Yang Gui seems a bit too excited.”
Jinshu finally felt a roll of stiff paper and hurriedly pulled out a sheet, sticking it onto Yang Gui’s forehead.
