Rosary Island once served as refuge for warriors returning from battles too heavy to carry home.

There are traditions that survive because the world still needs them.

The Grey Passage swallowed the twenty-eight in silver silence the moment Seth opened the pathway fully.Full novel: The Living Scripture: The World Unmasked – Arc 3 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

At first, the familiar pressure surrounding the dimensional corridors brought relief more than concern.

Endless rivers of silver drifted through the vast space around them while shifting pathways stretched beyond sight beneath layers of moving light and distorted distance.

Seth remained at the front beside Alec with silver breath flowing outward around them in immense stabilizing currents while Max guarded the rear beside Ethan, Elara, and Israel exactly as planned.

The team relaxed too quickly.

After everything inside the Forum, most expected violence to announce itself loudly if danger followed them into the Passage.

A physical assault.

A spiritual ambush.

Something visible enough to strike back against.

Then Israel cried out.

The sound tore through the formation instantly.

Samantha reached him first while Ethan and Elara moved toward him so quickly their panic rippled visibly through the Passage itself.

Israel collapsed against the silver pathway clutching his chest hard enough to wrinkle the fabric beneath his fingers while tears streamed uncontrollably down his face.

“My heart hurts,” he sobbed helplessly.

“It hurts really bad.”

Max immediately dropped beside him while gold scripture surged anxiously around her arms.

“What touched him?” Alec demanded sharply from the front while lightning curled violently around his hands.

His gaze searched the surrounding corridors with growing aggression already building inside him.

Samantha checked Israel desperately before looking back toward the others with confusion tightening every word leaving her mouth.

“There is no wound. There is no corruption. I cannot find anything inside him physically.”

Israel cried harder afterward.

The sound carried horribly through the Passage.

Ethan wrapped both arms around him while Elara pressed tightly against his side, both of them trying to comfort him in silence.

The younger boy shook harder.

Tears flowed freely down his face.

One hand pressed against his chest while confusion and grief washed across his features.

His sorrow rolled outward in waves powerful enough for everyone nearby to feel.

Max felt the emotion immediately.

The sight tightened something in her.

She crossed over to him, and drew him into her arms.

He buried his face into her chest while silent sobs shook his small frame.

The Passage was reaching him.

For all of them.

Marcus suddenly shoved Jamey backward hard enough to send him stumbling several feet across the silver pathway.

“You need to stay away from me,” Marcus snapped viciously.

Fury twisted across his face fast enough to stun the entire formation.

Jamey stared at him in complete disbelief.

“What exactly did I do this time?”

“You keep getting too close.” Marcus dragged one hand harshly across his face afterward like he hated hearing himself speak.

“Just stop touching me.”

Alec moved between them instantly.

Lightning surged hotter around him while the Passage itself rippled violently from the emotional pressure flooding through the group.

“You shove him again,” Alec warned darkly, “and I promise your day gets considerably worse.”

Marcus stepped forward immediately.

“Move.”

“No.”

The tension escalated fast enough that silver currents throughout the Passage began distorting violently around the formation.

Claire moved first.

Daniel moved with her.

“Enough,” Claire barked sharply while Daniel physically separated Marcus and Alec before either man did something irreversible.

“Something inside this place is getting into all of you.”

Max barely heard the argument anymore.

Her focus remained entirely fixed on Israel whose crying only worsened the longer they remained inside the Passage.

Then Victor screamed.

The sound ripped through the dimensional corridor hard enough to freeze the entire formation again.

His shields exploded outward around him in enormous unstable waves before retracting violently against his body repeatedly while he spun frantically searching the empty corridors surrounding them.

“Leave me alone!” he shouted wildly while slamming one shield against the silver floor hard enough to fracture portions of the pathway beneath him.

“Stop touching me!”

Fear entered the group properly after that.

Hannah rushed toward him immediately with her celestial wheel already glowing brightly behind her.

“Victor,” she called urgently, “look at me. Focus on my voice.”

Victor shoved her backward hard enough to stagger her several steps across the pathway.

Leah reacted before anyone else could.

The slap echoed violently through the Passage.

Victor froze instantly afterward while Leah pointed directly at him with furious disbelief tightening her face.

“You shove her again, and Samantha heals whatever I break next.”

Silence crashed through the formation after that.

Heavy breathing filled the Passage while emotional pressure clawed against the team from every direction at once.

Israel still cried softly between Ethan and Elara.

Marcus stared downward like disgust battled through him internally.

Victor looked horrified now that clarity slowly returned to his expression.

And all around them, the Grey Passage pulsed.

Emotionally.

Max slowly lifted her head afterward while understanding moved across her face piece by piece.

“These are not attacks,” she said quietly.

Everyone listened immediately.

“The Passage is reacting to emotion.”

Uneasy silence spread through the formation afterward.

Seth finally turned toward the group fully while silver breath moved heavily around him in immense stabilizing currents powerful enough to calm sections of the shifting corridor nearby.

Something far worse than fear darkened his expression now.

Understanding.

Hannah stared outward into the endless silver corridors surrounding them while realization slowly entered her voice.

“The demons were telling the truth.”

Another pulse rolled through the Passage immediately afterward.

This time everyone felt it clearly.

Grief crashed against them first.

Rage followed close behind.

Fear twisted through the current while despair lingered beneath it all like an endless tide stretching beyond sight.

Emotions old enough to lose their original owners yet powerful enough to remain trapped within the dimensional corridors surrounding them from every direction.

Sarah’s face drained completely beside Max.

“The Passage remembers people,” she whispered faintly.

“It remembers everything humanity leaves behind.”

Nobody spoke after that.

Seth increased their pace immediately afterward while silver breath expanded outward harder around the formation carving stability through the increasingly unstable corridors ahead.

The effort visibly strained even him now.

Silver currents surged violently through the Passage while entire sections of distorted pathway compressed and shifted around the twenty-eight as Seth forced a safer route forward through the growing emotional turbulence surrounding them.

The pressure inside the Passage worsened with every step.

Grief clawed through one corridor.

Rage flooded another.

Fear pulsed heavily beneath the silver floor while invisible emotional currents battered against the formation hard enough to stagger several members repeatedly.

Then the estate doorway finally appeared ahead.

Relief crashed through the team instantly.

Grace reacted immediately.

Pale gold light unfurled from her hands in flowing woven strands before wrapping instinctively around the nearest groups.

Soft translucent barriers folded around Samantha, Israel, Ethan, and Elara first while another cocoon of luminous silk curved protectively around Hannah and Victor moments later.

Claire found herself enclosed beside Madison while Daniel and Caleb disappeared beneath another shifting weave of light that bent fluidly around their movements like living fabric responding directly to Grace’s will.

Several smaller shields spiraled around the remaining members seconds later.

“Brace yourselves,” Grace warned sharply.

The Grey Passage expelled them violently.

The entire formation burst through the estate threshold hard enough to send several members stumbling across the grass outside the manor while Grace’s barriers flexed and compressed around them absorbing portions of the impact before lowering people roughly onto the lawn in tangled exhausted groups. This story is hosted at g.com.

Jamey still rolled twice downhill anyway before ending flat on his back staring toward the sky.

“I deeply hate that place,” he groaned weakly.

Nearby, Samantha tightened her hold around Israel beneath one of Grace’s woven shields while Ethan and Elara remained pressed closely against them both unusually quiet after everything they experienced inside the Passage.

Hannah still stood beside Victor inside another pale cocoon of light while he dragged both hands slowly across his face like remnants of invisible pressure still crawled across his skin.

Seth stepped through the threshold last.

Silver breath drifted heavily around him in exhausted waves while visible strain shadowed his expression openly now.

Even Alec’s face tightened slightly after seeing how much power the forced stabilization demanded from him.

Silence spread naturally afterward.

The team remained scattered across the estate grounds breathing heavily beneath the afternoon sunlight while lingering emotional pressure still moved unevenly through portions of the group.

Marcus sat with one arm braced against his knee staring silently into the grass while others simply lay where they landed trying to steady thoughts that still felt fractured after the Passage.

Then Max slowly lifted her head toward the still-open threshold behind them.

The endless silver corridors continued pulsing softly in the darkness.

Listening.

The realization left an uncomfortable weight hanging across the estate.

Max finally tore her gaze away from the Grey Passage.

Worry lingered openly across her face.

Her eyes found Seth immediately.

He was already looking at her.

Neither needed words to understand what troubled the other.

Ethan and Elara remained close to Samantha and Israel beneath Grace’s fading barrier while the younger boy still clung tightly to them both.

The sight pulled Max’s attention back to the question that refused to leave her alone.

“We need to find out why it didn’t affect us.”

Her voice remained quiet.

“Yet Ethan and Elara felt every part of it.”

Seth studied the twins for a moment.

Then he crossed the distance between them.

One arm slipped gently around her shoulders.

“I might know the answer to that puzzle.”

Max looked up at him.

“The Flame and Breath.”

The words had barely left his mouth when gold flickered beneath Max’s skin.

A heartbeat later silver currents tightened around Seth.

Both powers pulsed once.

Then again.

The reaction carried an unmistakable sense of agreement.

Silence returned.

This time nobody missed it.

Several members of the team exchanged uneasy glances.

Seth’s expression remained thoughtful for a moment before a sudden realization brightened his features.

“We should learn how to share the Flame and Breath with the team the next time we enter the Grey Passage.”

Max wrapped her arms around him and squeezed gently.

“We should learn because whatever happened is something I don’t want repeated.”

Everything inside the estate grounds felt too peaceful compared to what followed them home.

Nobody spoke for several moments.

Then Max looked across the scattered formation before glancing toward Seth beside her.

“We need better team building.”

Alec lay several feet away with one arm covering his eyes.

“We need a holiday,” he muttered tiredly.

Jamey lifted one hand weakly from the grass afterward.

“At the bosses’ expense, preferably.”

Max and Seth looked at one another immediately.

“That is actually not a terrible idea,” Seth admitted.

Max pointed one foot toward him instantly.

“You are reacting to the holiday suggestion.”

“Correct,” Seth answered smoothly.

“My survival instincts remain excellent.”

Jamey sat upward slightly afterward.

“It is not like the man cannot afford it. Seth is approximately three successful investments away from becoming a small country.”

Seth kicked him lightly with enough force to make Jamey flinch dramatically backward across the grass.

“My money,” Seth replied calmly, “belongs to my wife now.”

Jamey stared at Max in complete betrayal.

“You married strategically.”

“I absolutely did,” Max answered proudly.

“And Grace,” Seth added while glancing toward her nearby, “your shields prevented considerably worse outcomes inside the Passage. Excellent thinking.”

Grace blinked softly at the unexpected praise before offering a small embarrassed smile.

“I panicked professionally.”

Jamey pointed toward her immediately.

“That should become the official slogan of this family.”

Nobody carried enough strength left to laugh properly afterward.

Most preferred pouring whatever energy remained into simple gratitude that they survived the Grey Passage ride home intact.

The estate transformed completely over the next two days.

Tension still lingered beneath the surface after the Grey Passage incident, yet exhaustion eventually forced everyone into something closer to recovery than constant vigilance.

Rooms filled with movement again.

Laughter returned in fragments.

Arguments over luggage somehow became more aggressive than discussions about angels beneath the Euphrates.

Max blamed Jamey for that immediately.

Jamey blamed spiritual repression.

Nobody accepted either explanation.

By the third morning, the enormous estate lounge looked like organized chaos struggling desperately to maintain dignity.

Bags lined the walls beside folded blankets, travel containers, half-packed supplies, and enough snacks to survive either a vacation or the collapse of civilization itself.

Victor carried three duffel bags across the lounge while muttering about people “packing irresponsibly instead of intelligently.”

Olivia ignored him entirely while helping Emily reorganize clothing she already reorganized twice earlier that morning.

Caleb and Andrew argued over whether fishing equipment qualified as “essential survival resources” while Daniel silently confiscated several suspicious items from Jamey’s luggage without asking questions aloud.

Samantha sat near one of the larger sofas holding Israel comfortably against her side while Ethan and Elara played quietly nearby beneath Hannah’s watchful eye.

Sarah remained close to Max even now, though the constant panic inside her finally eased enough that she occasionally wandered more than five feet away voluntarily.

Progress.

Large convoy vehicles already waited outside the estate beyond the massive front windows.

Nobody volunteered to use the Grey Passage again.

Nobody even mentioned it.

Max entered the lounge beside Seth moments later while several conversations gradually softened around them.

Seth carried two travel bags effortlessly over one shoulder while Max held coffee in one hand and growing concern in the other.

“You all pack like people expecting exile,” she announced while staring across the mountain of luggage surrounding the lounge.

“We survived spiritual trauma inside a dimensional nightmare,” Adrian replied smoothly from one of the chairs nearby.

“Preparedness feels wise now.”

Alec walked past carrying enough bags to disappear behind them completely.

“Some of us are preparing for the possibility of Jamey causing international incidents.”

Jamey pointed proudly toward himself.

“History remembers bold men.”

“History arrests bold men too,” Claire answered softly.

Soft laughter spread naturally through the room afterward while Max finally shook her head with visible surrender.

“As always,” she began while leaning lightly against Seth’s shoulder, “this trip comes with several very important rules.”

Groans immediately filled the lounge.

“You are all exhausting,” Max informed them calmly before continuing anyway.

“First rule. No drama.”

Several people looked directly toward Jamey.

Jamey looked deeply offended.

“I carry atmosphere. There is a difference.”

“Second,” Max continued while ignoring him entirely, “there will be absolutely no Armageddon-level disasters for the next week.”

Victor slowly raised one hand afterward.

“If the sky splits open,” Seth answered calmly, “we keep it that way until we return.”

The lounge erupted into tired laughter afterward.

Even Marcus smiled faintly into his coffee for the first time in nearly two days.

Max lifted one finger before the noise fully returned.

“One more thing. The surrounding sects already received warnings to leave us alone during this vacation.” Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“Anybody ignoring that warning becomes Alec’s personal growth project.”

Lightning crackled softly around Alec’s fingers immediately.

“I finally feel appreciated.”

Then Max glanced toward the front entrance just as headlights swept across the estate driveway outside.

“They’re here.”

The convoy beyond the windows shifted slightly while another vehicle pulled alongside the others outside the estate.

A moment later, Master Dan stepped through the entrance doors carrying a travel case over one shoulder while Jason followed directly behind him, already surveying the luggage explosion surrounding the room with visible amusement.

“Either we are leaving for a holiday,” he said slowly, “or humanity collapsed while I was driving here.”

Jamey pointed toward him instantly.

“See? He understands preparedness.”

The trip remained quieter than usual.

After everything inside the Forum and the Grey Passage, silence felt less uncomfortable now.

Most of the twenty-eight seemed content simply existing beside one another without needing constant conversation to fill the spaces between them.

Seth’s jet touched down smoothly at Harmony’s Peak shortly after midday beneath clear skies and cold ocean wind rolling in from the surrounding cliffs.

The coastal port stretched peacefully beneath towering rock formations and white sea mist while fishing boats drifted lazily farther out beyond the harbor.

From there, they boarded the ferry toward Rosary Island.

That decision immediately humbled several members of the group.

Andrew turned progressively greener the farther the boat carried them from shore while Victor looked personally betrayed by the movement of the ocean beneath his feet.

Even Jamey lost portions of his usual confidence after one particularly violent swell nearly launched him sideways into Daniel.

“This vessel carries hatred in its design,” Jamey muttered while gripping the railing with both hands.

“The sea is moving normally,” Claire informed him calmly.

“The sea is moving aggressively.”

Near the opposite side of the ferry, Hannah stood quietly beside the rail overlooking the endless stretch of blue water surrounding them.

Wind moved softly through her hair while distant sunlight reflected across the ocean in silver ripples that almost resembled fragments of her celestial wheel scattered across the waves.

Adrian noticed she had barely spoken during the crossing.

He walked over without announcing himself and extended a bottle of water toward her casually.

“You have been staring at the horizon as if it insulted you personally,” he said lightly.

A soft laugh escaped Hannah before she accepted the bottle.

“I was watching the sky.”

Adrian leaned one arm against the railing beside her afterward while his gaze lifted upward briefly.

“There are no stars out right now.”

“There are patterns even during daylight.” Her voice softened slightly beneath the sound of the ocean around them.

“You just learn where to look.”

Adrian studied her quietly for several seconds afterward.

Then smiled faintly.

“That might be the most Hannah thing anybody has ever said.”

For the first time since leaving the estate, genuine warmth reached her expression fully.

The ferry finally reached Rosary Island shortly afterward.

Andrew became the first person off the boat.

He nearly sprinted down the dock, clutching his travel bag against his chest before stopping long enough to breathe like a man returning from war.

Madison followed behind him with considerably more dignity yet identical relief written across her face.

“I never wish to see another wave again,” Andrew declared weakly.

“The feeling is mutual,” Madison replied while adjusting her jacket against the sea breeze.

Rosary Island unfolded beautifully beyond them.

Stone pathways curved between enormous cliffs covered in climbing ivy and flowering coastal vines while scattered rock cabins rested beneath towering trees overlooking the sea.

Farther inland, sections of ancient white stone disappeared into forested elevation while distant waterfalls echoed softly through the island air.

Everything felt quieter here.

Cleaner somehow.

Even Sarah visibly relaxed the deeper they walked into the island.

The cabins themselves appeared old enough to belong to another century entirely.

Built from pale, weathered stone and dark timber roofs, each structure carried warmth rather than luxury while lanterns swayed gently outside shaded porches overlooking the ocean cliffs below.

By the time luggage finally reached the central cabin clearing, half the group already looked ready to collapse again.

Samuel dropped several bags beside the nearest cabin afterward before addressing everyone loudly enough to cut through the growing noise surrounding the clearing.

“The cabins were cleaned thoroughly before we arrived,” he announced while pointing toward the scattered structures surrounding them.

“Each one has three small rooms and enough space for everyone unless Jamey starts another civil war over blankets.”

“I like quality bedding,” Jamey defended immediately.

“You stole mine last month,” Victor snapped.

“It was spiritually borrowed.”

Max ignored them entirely while surveying the island briefly before pointing toward the furthest cabin overlooking the cliffs near the distant cave opening farther along the coastline.

“We are taking that one,” she announced before looking toward the children.

“Kids, with me.”

Ethan and Elara immediately grabbed their bags while Israel hurried after them enthusiastically.

Sarah lingered only long enough to glance toward Seth before quickly following Max as well.

“Elara and Sarah together,” Max called while climbing the cabin steps.

“Israel and Ethan share the second room. Seth and I take the last one.”

“Excellent,” Seth answered calmly from farther behind them.

“I enjoy surviving vacations beside my wife.”

“You say that like it requires effort.”

“It absolutely does.”

Soft laughter spread naturally through the clearing afterward while the rest of the team gradually scattered toward the remaining cabins carrying luggage and arguing over room arrangements.

Adrian quietly reached for Hannah’s travel bag before she could pick it up herself.

“I assume you planned on sharing a cabin with civilized people,” he said smoothly while already walking toward one of the nearby stone cabins.

Madison immediately narrowed her eyes from several feet away.

“He better not think you are sharing a room with him.”

Hannah giggled softly before motioning farther ahead toward Victor, already dragging luggage through the doorway behind Adrian.

“Victor joined him.”

Madison visibly relaxed afterward.

“Oh, thank God.”

Victor stopped halfway through the doorway, looking deeply offended.

“That sounded personal.”

“It was,” Madison replied honestly.

Before the argument escalated further, Seth’s voice carried across the clearing loudly enough to reach every scattered cabin surrounding the island path.

“We meet back here in one hour for lunch,” he called while lifting several bags effortlessly over one shoulder.

“Anybody arriving late helps Leah cook tonight.”

Leah smiled immediately.

Half the island panicked.

As the clearing slowly emptied and laughter drifted between the scattered cabins once more, Hannah lingered briefly near the stone pathway overlooking the sea.

Far beyond the cliffs, waves crashed rhythmically against the island below while sunlight scattered across the ocean in endless silver fragments.

Peace finally touched the twenty-eight properly for the first time in days.

Then Hannah’s expression changed.

Her eyes lifted slowly toward the open sky above Rosary Island.

The clouds overhead moved normally.

The stars hidden beyond them did not.

Far above the daylight, something shifted against the celestial pattern hard enough to send her entire wheel flickering faintly behind her back.

A cold feeling moved through her chest immediately afterward.

Adrian noticed at once.

“Hannah?”

She did not answer immediately.

Her gaze remained fixed upward while unease slowly tightened across her face.

Then she whispered enough that only Adrian heard it.

“The sky is moving wrong again.”

The team finally found a moment to catch their breath.

Considering everything they experienced inside the Grey Passage, that feels well deserved.

As Max suggested, the world can continue crumbling for a few days while everyone recovers, strengthens their bonds, and investigates why the Grey Passage seems so interested in everyone’s unresolved trauma.
