Humanity fears monsters most when they resemble us closely enough to walk unnoticed beside us.

The Obsidian Forum remained unnaturally quiet after Max resumed the meeting.

Fear still lingered heavily through the ascending tiers while hundreds of eyes tracked every movement surrounding the central chamber floor.Full novel: The Living Scripture: The World Unmasked – Arc 3 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Even the Magistrates seated around the massive obsidian table carried visible tension now after witnessing Adrian, Emily, and Jamey bend the entire Forum into synchronized obedience moments earlier.

Leader Bo looked furious.

Andrew noticed immediately.

The older leader’s eyes lingered on him longer than necessary, with the sharp bitterness of someone who felt abandoned publicly.

Andrew held the stare without flinching.

You asked for this.

The thought almost seemed visible across his face.

Max remained standing beside the central table while Seth sat quietly nearby.

He rested an arm on the central table and exhaled softly.

Silver breath unfurled from him in a slow luminous stream, drifting across the obsidian surface before vanishing beneath the ancient Forum lights.

“As Seth and I explained earlier,” Max said calmly, “the demons captured in Rothmans, along with Jeremy, remain secured inside the water chamber beneath the Forum.”

Uneasy murmurs drifted upward through the tiers immediately.

“The demons remain separated from Jeremy entirely,” Seth added.

“That arrangement continues permanently.”

Several Magistrates visibly approved of that decision.

Max’s gaze shifted slowly across the chamber afterward.

“What happens next will disturb many of you,” she said evenly.

“Prepare yourselves accordingly.”

The weight behind those words tightened the atmosphere instantly.

Then Max leaned slightly toward Seth.

“Do you mind, love?” she asked softly.

A faint smile touched Seth’s face.

“Always happy to terrify people publicly for you.”

Alec dragged one hand down his face immediately.

“They flirt during catastrophes.”

“They married during one too,” Jamey muttered.

“Consistency matters.”

Soft nervous laughter moved through portions of the chamber before abruptly dying again when Seth rose from his chair.

Silver breath erupted outward around him immediately.

The temperature inside the Forum dropped sharply while ancient pressure flooded the chamber hard enough to silence every remaining whisper instinctively.

Silver currents climbed across Seth’s body in immense flowing layers while the Sacred Breath unfurled behind him like living strands of moonlit smoke carrying enough authority to make entire rows lean backward unconsciously.

Then he stepped through space.

The chamber distorted once around him.

Seth vanished.

The silence afterward felt enormous.

Several people throughout the tiers rose halfway from their seats before Seth reappeared seconds later directly above the center platform with three figures suspended behind him inside immense spiraling restraints formed entirely from compressed silver breath.

The crowd erupted instantly.

The demons looked human.

Too human.

Their bodies remained frozen upright inside Seth’s aura while silver strands wrapped around their limbs, throats, torsos, and skulls tightly enough to hold even their breathing in controlled rhythm.

Yet their faces looked painfully ordinary.

One appeared middle-aged with dark hair combed neatly backward.

Another carried softer features with exhausted eyes and weathered skin that could have belonged to a teacher, father, or shopkeeper.

The final demon, the one Max already identified as leadership inside Rothmans, looked calm enough to unsettle the entire chamber more deeply than rage ever could.

Then people noticed their eyes.

Void stared back at the Forum.

Uneasy sounds spread rapidly through the chamber afterward while spectators rose openly, now trying to see the restrained figures more clearly.

“They look human.”

“That cannot be real.”

“Look at their eyes.”

“Void…”

The word traveled upward through the tiers repeatedly afterward.

Void.

Void.

Void.

One older elder quietly whispered a prayer beneath his breath while another shifted farther back into his seat with visible discomfort, tightening his face.

Seth lowered the restrained demons toward the prepared seating area before the central table.

The chairs slammed against the obsidian floor beneath the weight of the silver restraints with enough force to echo through the chamber.

The demons remained frozen inside Seth’s aura, completely unable to move or speak.

Max finally rose from her chair fully.

Gold scripture moved softly across her arms and throat beneath the ancient Forum lights while complete silence gradually reclaimed the chamber around her once more.

“As most of you already understand,” she said calmly, “demons rarely remain monstrous for long.”

The entire chamber listened.

“They arrive crude. Violent. Primitive. Many resemble little more than spiritual foot soldiers when they first enter our world.”

Her eyes shifted slowly toward the restrained demons afterward.

“Then they spend time among humanity.”

The silence inside the Forum deepened further.

“They observe us. They study emotion, speech, grief, belief, affection, anger, trust, and fear. Decades pass. Sometimes centuries. Their forms evolve alongside that exposure until eventually they begin resembling the people surrounding them closely enough that most humans never notice what stands beside them anymore.”

Uneasy movement spread through the surrounding tiers.

Several people looked toward one another instinctively afterward.

Max continued anyway.

“They do not steal bodies. They become reflections of the environments they infest.”

That sentence landed heavily.

“The longer they remain among humanity,” Seth added quietly beside her, “the more convincing they become.”

Fear entered the chamber properly after that.

Max allowed the silence inside the Forum to stretch for several moments longer while the demons remained suspended beneath Seth’s silver breath.

Fear still moved through the chamber heavily now.

Uneasy whispers drifted through the upper tiers, while many in the audience kept glancing toward familiar faces around them, as though suddenly questioning how well they truly knew the people beside them.

Seth noticed immediately.

“The Divine can see through them,” he said calmly before the fear spread further.

Silver breath slipped from his lips alongside the words, drifting across the chamber as his gaze moved over the gathered crowd.

“Human souls and demonic corruption do not carry the same spiritual presence. Their disguises deceive humanity. They do not deceive Heaven.”

The tension throughout the Forum eased slightly after that, though unease still lingered heavily beneath the surface.

“There remains far too much we still do not understand,” Max said at last.

Her voice carried clearly through the chamber without needing force behind it.

“Which means we need answers. We need to understand what we are fighting, how deeply their corruption has spread, and how close the fallen beneath the Euphrates truly are to rising fully into this world.”

Gold scripture drifted softly across her hands while her gaze moved across the enormous chamber surrounding the central table.

Toward the Magistrates.

Toward the leaders.

Toward her people.

Toward the hundreds watching from the ascending obsidian tiers above.

Then her expression softened slightly beneath the ancient Forum lights.

“God appointed the twenty-eight with fierce gifts for a reason,” she continued calmly.

“Because He loves His people fiercely enough to raise protectors wherever darkness begins spreading.”

The chamber listened carefully now.

“We carry unusual power. Some of it frightens even us at times.” A faint smile touched her face briefly at that while soft nervous laughter moved through parts of the Forum.

“Yet power alone will never hold this world together.”

Heads throughout the tiers slowly nodded in agreement.

Max continued anyway.

“We need every prayer warrior, every intercessor, every faithful voice willing to stand against what is coming.”

The atmosphere inside the Forum shifted again after that.

Less fear now.

More unity.

More purpose.

Then Max’s eyes shifted toward Seth beside her.

“The angels beneath the Euphrates are stirring,” she said quietly.

“And we still do not know how many of the three have awakened fully.”

The chamber tightened instantly.

Seth rose slowly from his chair afterward while silver breath moved heavily around him in immense drifting currents.

“The hand many of you witnessed during Jeremy’s trial belonged to only one of them,” he said evenly.

Uneasy movement spread across the tiers immediately afterward.

Several Magistrates exchanged troubled looks while whispers broke through portions of the chamber once more.

Seth turned his gaze slowly toward the restrained demons beside him.

“And now,” he finished calmly, “we begin collecting answers.”

The demons reacted immediately.

For the first time since entering the Forum, visible strain crossed their otherwise human faces while their bodies twisted violently against the silver restraints gripping them.

The leader demon especially surged hardest against Seth’s aura with enough force to make the surrounding air distort briefly around the chair.

Silver breath compressed instantly in response.

The restraints tightened harder around their limbs, throats, and torsos while the pressure surrounding them deepened into something ancient and crushing powerful enough to force every movement from their bodies at once.

This time fear entered their void-filled eyes openly.

Max stepped away from the Forum table first.

Seth moved with her immediately.

Together they crossed the chamber floor until they stood directly before the restrained demons side by side beneath the immense obsidian tiers watching from every direction above.

Gold scripture drifted slowly around Max while silver breath flowed outward from Seth in immense quiet currents that pressed against the chamber hard enough to make the surrounding air feel heavier.

The leader demon lifted its void-filled gaze toward them with visible hatred twisting beneath its carefully human expression.

Max studied him calmly for several moments.

Then she began.

“How many of your kind currently move among humanity?”

Silence lingered across the chamber.

The demon’s smile returned first.

“Enough.”

Seth rose from his chair.

Silver breath spilled from his exhale as he stepped toward the table.

Max’s hand closed around his forearm.

“Easy.”

Seth stopped.

The Breath surged onward.

Silver tore across the distance between them and struck the demon with the force of a divine rebuke.

A crack exploded through the Forum.

The creature’s head whipped sideways as blood sprayed across the obsidian floor.

The restraints screamed against the chair.

Every conversation, every shifting movement, every lingering whisper throughout the chamber vanished beneath a single wave of collective tension.

The demon turned back slowly.

Fear had already devoured the smile.

Seth’s gaze remained fixed on him.

Silver breath drifted from his lips and coiled through the air between them like a warning waiting for permission.

“Max asked you a question.”

The chamber seemed to draw inward around the words.

“Give her an answer worthy of the effort.”

Max stepped closer afterward.

Gold scripture moved slowly across her fingers before expanding outward into the air around the restrained figures in drifting strands of living pressure.

“How many?” she repeated.

The chamber felt the difference instantly.

The demon’s face tightened.

“Thousands,” it hissed at last.

“Some hidden. Some awakened. Some still learning.”

Uneasy whispers spread upward through the Forum immediately.

Max continued before the chamber fully reacted.

“What were you doing in Rothmans?”

The demon laughed softly through clenched teeth.

“Preparing.”

“For what?”

The darkness inhabiting its eyes slid toward her.

“For the world that comes after yours.”

The chamber stirred heavily again.

Silver breath tightened harder around the other two demons while the leader strained violently against the restraints with growing frustration.

Max remained completely still.

“What are you preparing humanity for?”

This time the demon refused immediately.

Its body twisted sharply enough to distort the surrounding silver restraints while deep cracks suddenly appeared along portions of its skin like something beneath the human form wanted outward desperately.

The audience reacted instantly.

Several elders rose halfway from their seats while the surrounding tiers erupted into alarmed movement.

Gold pressure exploded outward from Max.

The entire chamber shook once.

Living scripture wrapped around the demon’s throat, chest, and skull in immense glowing strands before slamming it backward into the chair hard enough to fracture the obsidian beneath it.

The Forum fell silent again.

“You will answer,” Max said calmly.

Fear entered the demon’s expression properly for the first time.

Its mouth opened slowly afterward.

“To weaken humanity before the seals break completely.”

A heavy chill moved through the chamber.

Max continued immediately.

“How many of the fallen beneath the Euphrates have awakened?”

The demon laughed again.

This time the sound carried genuine malice.

“You already saw one.”

“We asked how many,” Seth replied.

The demon’s eyes shifted slowly toward him afterward.

“Three stir.”

The chamber tightened instantly.

“Only one reaches.”

A deep murmur rolled upward through the tiers.

Max stepped closer again while gold scripture drifted around her arms like living flame.

“Who commands you?”

The demon’s face changed after that question.

Something colder entered its expression.

Something reverent.

Something afraid.

“No throne commands what comes next,” it whispered.

For the first time, uncertainty touched its borrowed features.

“An old wound does.”

Silence spread through the Forum.

The demon’s gaze seemed to drift somewhere far beyond the chamber.

“Time buried it.”

Its voice grew quieter.

“Memory preserved it.”

A tremor passed through the creature’s borrowed flesh.

“Now the wound has begun to bleed again.”

The chamber felt smaller afterward.

Then Max asked the final question.

“Why are you afraid now?”

The demon looked directly at her first.

Then Seth.

Then beyond them toward the twenty-eight gathered throughout the chamber.

Its false human expression slowly tightened.

“Heaven assembled too quickly.”

The answer landed heavily through the entire Forum.

Then the demon smiled again.

“And still too late.”

The words spread through the Forum like poison dropped into water.

Uneasy movement rolled through the ascending tiers while several elders lowered their heads into quiet prayer and others whispered fiercely among themselves, trying to contain the growing fear moving through the chamber.

Then the demon laughed softly.

“You still believe this war begins when the fallen rise fully.” Its void-filled eyes drifted slowly across the audience surrounding the chamber.

“Humanity opened the door long ago.”

The Forum quieted again.

The demon continued speaking before anyone interrupted.

“You speak of corruption as though we forced it upon your world.” Its smile widened faintly.

“Cruelty existed long before we walked among you. Hatred. Greed. Violence. Betrayal. Pride. Humanity feeds those things willingly every single day.”

The atmosphere shifted heavily afterward.

People looked away.

Some lowered their eyes.

Others stiffened visibly while uncomfortable understanding moved through portions of the crowd.

The demon’s expression faltered instantly afterward.

Something shifted across the chamber at once.

Max stepped forward.

The Living Flame followed.

Gold scripture erupted behind her in a sudden wave powerful enough to send heat rolling across the nearest tiers.

Ancient symbols blazed through the air.

The restrained demon’s smile tightened.

Fury born from every mother who buried a child.

Every father who remained standing when grief demanded surrender.

Every soul who chose kindness while carrying pain nobody else could see.

Gold spread outward through the chamber.

Ancient scripture awakened across the walls, the floor, and the towering obsidian tiers as though the Forum itself had begun listening.

The light brightened until silver carvings glowed like molten stars.

Max’s gaze swept across the gathered crowd.

Then her eyes returned to the demon.

“Humans were never designed for perfection,” she said softly.

Her voice carried through the chamber effortlessly.

“We stumble. We fail. We grieve. We lose ourselves sometimes.”

Silence deepened across the Forum.

“Then God reaches toward us again.”

The gold surrounding her intensified.

“Through kindness. Through faith. Through people willing to carry one another through darkness. Through warnings. Through mercy. Through love powerful enough to pull someone back from destruction when they can no longer stand alone.”

Emotion moved visibly through the surrounding tiers now.

Several prayer warriors lowered their heads while others wiped quietly at their faces.

Max’s gaze hardened afterward.

“This time,” she continued, her voice growing stronger, “He gave humanity defenders capable of standing against what comes next.”

The Living Flame answered.

Gold scripture suspended throughout the chamber halted simultaneously.

Every symbol hanging in the air held its place.

Every current of living gold became perfectly still.

A deep sound rolled through the Forum.

Ancient silver markings awakened beneath the obsidian floor and carried light outward through the chamber in widening rivers.

Thousands felt the vibration pass through the towering tiers surrounding them.

The Living Flame moved.

Scripture surged toward Max from every direction at once.

Symbols raced across walls, ceilings, aisles, and ascending tiers in brilliant streams of gold.

The chamber filled with the sound of rushing power.

Air trembled.

Space tightened.

Ancient characters poured toward the central table and vanished into her one after another.

Gold gathered.

Light gathered.

Purpose gathered.

The pressure building around her seemed large enough to pull the entire chamber inward.

Then silence swept through the Forum.

At the exact same moment, the twenty-eight rose from their seats surrounding the central Forum table as one unified movement.

Power answered instantly.

The atmosphere transformed completely.

Fear gave way to awe.

The audience rose with them.

Applause thundered upward through the chamber while voices broke through the noise from every direction.

“We stand with you!”

“Glory to God!”

“Protect humanity!”

Emotion crashed through the Forum in powerful waves while dozens of intercessors and warriors throughout the tiers openly began praying aloud.

Max leaned forward slightly.

Gold burned within her eyes.

Ancient scripture surfaced beneath the light before sinking deeper once more.

The Living Flame watched through her gaze.

“Humanity is not weak,” she said firmly.

“Humanity has us.”

Her smile deepened slightly as her eyes shifted toward Seth beside her.

“And we… have God.”

The entire Forum erupted afterward.

The restrained demons reacted violently this time.

Fear entered their expressions openly while Seth’s silver restraints compressed harder around them instantly.

Then Seth stepped through space again.

The chamber distorted around him once.

And he vanished alongside the demons beneath the deafening roar of the Obsidian Forum behind him.

They did not linger inside the Obsidian Forum afterward.

Their purpose there had been fulfilled.

The demons were contained once more beneath the water chamber.

The Magistrates possessed their answers.

Humanity carried renewed hope.

Yet the revelations unfolding throughout the meeting continued pressing heavily against Max’s thoughts the longer silence surrounded her.

The fallen beneath the Euphrates were waking.

Demons already moved among humanity in numbers far greater than expected.

And somewhere beneath all of it lingered the demon’s final words.

Heaven assembled too quickly.

And still too late.

The twenty-eight moved together through the outer corridors of the Forum in quieter formation now while spiritual warriors and intercessors stepped aside respectfully to clear their path.

Nobody attempted conversation anymore.

The weight following the meeting remained too large for ordinary words.

Seth noticed the tension building inside Max long before she spoke it aloud.

The entrance to the Grey Passage shimmered softly ahead of them like fractured moonlight suspended between worlds.

Just before they crossed into it, Seth reached for her and pulled her gently against him.

Silver breath curled quietly around them while the rest of the team slowed instinctively nearby.

“I can practically hear your thoughts destroying your peace from here,” he murmured while nudging two fingers lightly against her forehead.

“You have me. You have all of us. Carrying the entire future alone serves nobody.”

Max exhaled quietly through her nose afterward while one hand rested briefly against his chest.

“You become annoyingly wise when I panic internally.”

“I become handsome too.”

Alec looked physically exhausted by them from several feet away.

“They flirt directly beside dimensional pathways.”

“It strengthens morale,” Jamey replied immediately.

“Please stop helping them.”

Soft laughter moved briefly through the group before Seth finally stepped into the Grey Passage first.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Max entered beside him.

Both stopped immediately afterward.

Their heads turned toward Sarah at the same moment.

“Is that you?” Seth asked quietly.

Sarah’s face drained instantly.

She looked between them rapidly before shaking her head hard enough to send panic through her voice before it even fully emerged.

“No,” she said fiercely.

“That’s not me.”

The Grey Passage shifted around them.

The endless silver pathways stretching through the dimensional corridor carried movement tonight.

Not violent movement.

Watching movement.

Vast currents rolled silently through the distance far beyond the visible passageways while deep pressure pulsed faintly beneath the floor like something enormous changing direction somewhere impossibly far away.

Even the air felt wrong.

The twins reacted first.

Ethan’s smile vanished completely while Elara slowly reached for Max’s hand without taking her eyes off the shifting darkness moving deeper within the Passage itself.

Israel stirred uneasily against Samantha’s shoulder nearby.

Max’s entire expression hardened immediately.

“We will have company inside the Passage today,” she said sharply.

The atmosphere throughout the group shifted at once.

Fear vanished.

Training answered instead.

“Seth and Alec take point,” Max continued while already moving the formation into place.

“The rest of you maintain standard movement spacing and stay alert for directional shifts.”

Her eyes shifted toward the rear pathways afterward where silver distortion rolled slowly through the darkness.

“I’ll cover the rear with the twins and Israel.”

Nobody argued.

The twenty-eight moved immediately.

And somewhere far deeper within the Grey Passage, something moved in response.

The twenty-eight stood together publicly for the first time today.

Unfortunately for them, something inside the Grey Passage listened to every word spoken in the Forum.
