Half asleep and half awake, Yan Xi seemed to be back in the modern world, standing in her family’s fruit and vegetable farm. Inside it the fruit trees stretched in swathes, with fruit of every season, greenhouses were common now, so you ate whatever you wanted. Vegetables were relatively fewer, the total came to under five mu, and two thirds of it was planted with fruit trees. Around the outside of the farm five prefab houses had been built for storing the fruit and vegetables, convenient for the trucks.
In the farm there was also a stream and a well. The well was old, it had been dug back in the nineties when her grandparents were getting ready to go into business. The well water was sweet, and the fruit it grew tasted better.
What was a bit different now was that there wasn’t a single person on the farm. No workers, no merchants come to talk terms, nothing. It was so empty it was as though she were the only person in the world. Yan Xi shouted a few times here and there and could hear only her own voice. There was nothing for it, so Yan Xi gave up. After shouting a few times her mouth was dry, and she came to the well meaning to draw a bucket of water, and found the well water was not as it used to be. Before, the well water only came up half the well, because the workers drew water every day, and sometimes when it didn’t refill in time it wasn’t even half. Whereas now the water was only half a meter from the mouth of the well.
Still dazed, Yan Xi drew a bucket of water anyway and drank some with the ladle beside it, and felt the taste was better. When she had drunk it she found the tiredness in her body had disappeared.
Yan Xi rode the little electric scooter around the farm a few times and found that there really was only herself. She didn’t think too much about it. She went to the lychee tree, picked a bunch of lychees and walked toward the outside eating as she went, and when she got to the main gate she suddenly found the gate was gone. Where the gate had been there was now a stretch of white mist. Yan Xi tried putting a hand out and found the white mist was like a wall, she couldn’t pass through it. Apart from the area of the farm, everywhere else was a blank white.
She tried several times and there was no way out. Yan Xi despaired. Then all at once Yan Xi thought of something: this couldn’t be a space, could it? For what it was worth, her greatest hobby back in the modern world had been reading novels, and she had read plenty of every type and style, and plenty with a space and a spirit spring. Could she have gotten one too? She had been here two days and nothing had appeared, so how had this space suddenly been bound to her? Could it be that she had it from the moment she arrived and just hadn’t noticed, and it suddenly appearing now was because she had blundered into it?
Say what you like, thinking it through this way Yan Xi found it quite reasonable. She had read plenty of transmigration stories before, and many of them had a golden finger, if not a space then a system, and if not that then a photographic memory or something. She had nothing at all, and she was even just a university student. She didn’t know medicine or martial arts or anything, what she had studied was art, which in these ancient times was nothing at all!
In the modern world she had just been coasting along waiting to die, and after graduating she would inherit the family business. The art she had studied was the realist school, which was no use here either. Never mind whether there were pencils and paints, she couldn’t even afford paper. Sure enough, from ancient times to now, anything to do with art is not cheap!
Having worked it out, Yan Xi copied the novels she had read and called out “Out,” and she really did go out. After trying it back and forth a few times Yan Xi was more familiar with the space.
Yan Xi found that the well water in the space had become a spirit spring. Whether it could cure every illness she didn’t know yet, but it could dispel tiredness, and it certainly made the fruit taste better. And there were those five prefab houses, in which time was stopped: whatever went in stayed exactly as it had been. Just now Yan Xi had broken an apple in half and put it in a prefab house, and after over an hour it hadn’t oxidized.
Seeing this, Yan Xi almost laughed out loud. Sure enough, the god of transmigration had not failed her. Who doesn’t get a golden finger? Thinking of this, Yan Xi looked forward even more to the happy life to come!
