*Sunday morning*

The Association’s open training facility was packed. Normally it hosted public demonstrations, hero exams, large-scale drills, the occasional inter-team competition: a stadium built around a circular arena, tiered reinforced seating rising on every side.

Today it looked less like a training ground and more like a venue waiting on a championship match.Full novel: The Mad Healer: My Patients Are Humanity’s Most Dangerous Yanderes — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Felix stood at the edge of the arena and stared up at the stands. "...How did this many people find out?"

Lucia chuckled at his side, leaning against the alloy railing."You really thought nobody would hear about a spar between two Ultra III awakened?"

He scanned the crowd. His whole team was there. Ryan had shown up with his girlfriend, apparently past hiding it now that Felix had already blown his cover.

Kael sat next to Lena, radiating far too much excitement about whatever role he’d assigned himself.

Darius had brought his wife and their three-year-old son, the boy perched on his mother’s lap, eyes huge and fixed on the arena like it was the single most interesting thing he’d ever seen.

Mira stood near the center, already in referee mode. Orion sat quiet near the back, as usual.

Gideon had planted himself a few rows up, arms crossed, watching with the flat, assessing look of a man cataloguing threat levels out of habit.

Scattered among them, a surprising number of Association staff had turned up too.

Felix narrowed his eyes. "Someone leaked this."

"You invited your parents," Aria said, a few meters off.

"I didn’t invite them. They invited themselves." Felix sighed.

Aria just nodded, like that explained everything because, knowing his parents, it did.

From the stands, Kael’s voice suddenly boomed out. "GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!"

Felix looked up to find Kael standing with a communicator held like a microphone, and Lena yanking him back down by the shoulder. "You’re the commentator, not the announcer."

"Same thing."

"It is not."

Mira sighed loudly enough to carry. "This was already a mistake." She stepped to the center of the arena, and the crowd gradually settled. "Today’s match is a controlled spar between two members of the same S-rank team." She gestured to one side. "First contestant — Felix Valerius."

Felix walked in to a wave of cheers and laughter. Kael leaned into his communicator. "AND ENTERING THE RING, OUR VERY OWN MAD HEALER!"

Felix just shook his head and kept walking. Mira turned to the other side. "Second contestant — Aria Frost."

Before Kael could bellow into the receiver again, Lena cleanly wrested the communicator from his grip. Bringing it to her lips, she announced, perfectly poised, "Special Operations Strike Vanguard, Ultra III Elementalist, and the Frost family’s primary frontline asset—Aria Frost."

Kael crossed his arms with a sullen pout. "Boring."

The reaction to Aria was quieter, everyone in that crowd already knew exactly what she was capable of, and knew this wasn’t going to be a demonstration so much as a genuine collision between two people standing at the same level with nothing alike in how they got there.

"Rules are simple," Mira said, looking between them. "No lethal attacks, nothing outside the arena boundary, nothing meant to permanently cripple your opponent. Victory by surrender, incapacitation, or referee call." Both nodded. She stepped back. "Begin."

For five seconds, neither moved.

Whisper-rustle.

Kael whispered loudly enough for half the stadium to hear. "They’re just staring at each other."

Lena elbowed his ribs. "Shut up and watch."

Felix kept his eyes fixed on Aria. Her balance was centered, loose, completely relaxed, the kind of relaxed that meant an attack was already queued.

Felix smiled. "Then allow me."

SWOOSH.

Felix shifted laterally, his mana wrapping around his frame in a tight, translucent skin, pure compressed reinforcement.

Aria triggered her stride at the exact same split-second.

SHRRRK.

Frost crystallized beneath her soles as she glided across the floor plates. Felix ducked sideways; an arc of razor-thin ice sheared through the pocket of air his collarbone had occupied a millisecond prior.

WHAM.

He countered instantly, driving a mana-dense fist toward her floating ribs. Aria blocked with an ice-sheathed forearm; the kinetic shock drove her back five meters, frost digging deep into the composite floor to anchor her footing.

"Solid," Felix noted, shaking the frost from his knuckles.

Aria’s lips curved slightly. "You’re moving cleaner."

"So are you."

TWIP-TWIP-TWIP.

Three condensed ice spears materialized above her fingertips and launched in an overlapping trajectory.

Felix sidestepped the first. The second grazed his bicep. The third punched through his tactical vest at the flank, slicing clean across his ribs.

Drip.

Blood spotted the gray floor. In the stands, Darius’s son tugged his mother’s sleeve with a muffled question; Darius placed a large, calloused hand on the boy’s head, murmuring an answer without peeling his eyes from the fight.

Felix glanced at the cut. "That actually hurt."

Aria didn’t waste time conversing. She closed the distance.

VWOOM.

Felix vanished from where he stood and reappeared beside her, palm striking her shoulder with mana concentrated at the point of impact, sending her sideways through the air.

THUD-CRACK.

Aria twisted mid-air, plant-pivoted against an ice buffer she generated on the fly, and hit the stone cleanly on both feet.

"AND THAT," Kael bellowed through the speakers, "IS PRECISELY WHY YOU NEVER ENTER HIS MELEE RADIUS!"

"Remarkably accurate analysis," Lena muttered.

The tempo surged instantly. Neither fighter escalated raw elemental output; instead, their precision sharpened to a razor edge.

Aria’s ice thinned into dozens of small, fast projectiles instead of a handful of large ones, manipulating their paths mid-flight with minute finger twitches.

T-T-T-PING!

Felix stopped relying on raw displacement.

He read the trajectories: tracking her shoulder shifts, the angle of her elbows, calculating angles by millimeters. A shard whistled under his arm; another opened a thin gash along his cheekbone; third punching clean through his thigh..

SHUCK.

He ignored the puncture entirely. He stepped through the hit, closing the pocket, and drove an explosive mana strike straight into her solar plexus.

OOF.

Aria doubled back, but before he could follow through, the floor beneath his boots ruptured.

CRACK-CRUNCH.

A forest of crystalline spears thrust upward.

Felix launched himself skyward, landed on the point of a single fractured spike, and blocked her follow-up strike with his forearm, the blade cutting straight through his mana coating and drawing blood.

He grinned. "That’s better."

"You are disturbingly comfortable taking damage," Aria muttered, her eyes narrowing.

"Part of the skill set."

In the stands, Cassius leaned toward Lucia.

"He stopped prioritizing damage mitigation altogether."

"I see it," Lucia replied quietly, her hands clasped tightly over her knees.

The exchange accelerated into pure violence.

CLANG-CRACK.

Dense mana met reinforced glacial ice. The impact resonated through the stadium like artillery fire. Fragments of ice exploded into fine mist, the mana shield fracturing and reforming in fractions of a second. Neither yielded ground.

WHACK—THUD—CRACK.

An elbow to his ribs, a knee in answer, her cheek grazed by his knuckles, an ice spike answering that and catching his shoulder.

He grabbed the spike where it had lodged, hauled himself closer along it, and drove a fist straight into her stomach.

THUMP.

Aria skidded backward, gasping. Felix didn’t chase. He stepped back, a pale emerald luminescence flooding his shoulder and side.

HISSSS.

The torn muscle, severed skin, and bruised bone knit back together in plain view, the wounds sealing in seconds.

The gallery fell into an eerie, startled silence.

"That’s absurd," Kael whispered into the dead mic.

"That’s why he survived the solo contact,"

Lena said, her tone uncharacteristically solemn.

He wasn’t halting to recover. The regeneration was woven directly into his combat rhythm, his breathing never hitched, his footwork never stalled, the barrier between offensive engagement and cellular restoration completely erased.

Gideon leaned forward, resting his chin on his knuckles, his calculating expression hardening into genuine recognition.

Aria read the shift too and immediately altered her targeting. She stopped targeting his body and aimed at his stability.

FWSSSHHH.

She coated the entire arena floor in slick, frictionless frost, forcing him to leap to avoid losing his footing.

She had already mapped his landing arc.

BOOM.

A three-meter slab of reinforced ice rose directly into his path mid-air. Felix shattered the barrier with a hammer-fist, sending crystalline shards spraying across the ring.

CRASH.

Aria was already on the reverse side of the wall. Her palm connected flush with his breastplate, discharging a dense compressed sub-zero mana.

BANG.

Felix was blown backward across thirty meters of open floor, crashing violently against the reinforced boundary wall.

THUD.

He dropped into the pulverized stone, motionless for a single beat.

Lucia was out of her seat instantly. "Felix!"

Cassius remained seated, but his hands gripped the armrests hard enough to whiten his knuckles.

A slow breath escaped Felix. He pushed himself up from the rubble, spitting a bead of blood onto the frost.

Heh.

His eyes flared with cold exhilaration. "All right. Now we’re testing the threshold."

Aria drew a sharp breath, lowering her stance. "You’re completely unhinged."

"Occupational hazard."

BOOM.

He detonated forward.

This time, his rhythm broke. He offered a heavy feint to the left, she adjusted—he corrected his line, dropped his shoulder as if aiming for a kinetic tackle, and swept her lead foot instead.

She vaulted clear, precisely as he anticipated.

WHAM.

Felix pivoted on his heel, driving an upward palm strike that she barely blocked with both arms, the sheer kinetic force lifting her into the air.

Before gravity could pull her down, Felix had already matched her height, his entire right forearm shaped into something closer to a short blade.

Her eyes went wide. She threw up an ice shield to meet it.

KRA-KOOOOM!

The collision detonated across the arena basin. The concussive shockwave slammed against the perimeter barrier, tripping the stadium’s secondary kinetic alarms.

A dense fog of pulverized ice and stone dust swallowed the arena whole.

BZZZZT.

Silence hung over the facility for three long seconds.

Through the settling haze, two silhouettes emerged side by side.

Felix stood with blood tracing his jawline, the mana blade along his forearm fractured and dissipating into static.

Beside him, Aria stepped through the debris, her barrier shattered into dust, a thin red gash marking her forehead.

They looked at each other. Both broke into exhausted, identical grins.

Neither had conceded. Neither had fallen.

Both had learned exactly what they needed to.

"Match concluded!" Mira called out,

marching briskly between them before either could re-engage. "Step down!"

The stands erupted into an absolute roar of applause.

Kael practically threw himself against the safety rail. "ABSOLUTE CINEMA!"

YANK.

"Get down from there!" Lena dragged him backward by his collar.

In the lower rows, Darius’s son was standing on the seat clapping frantically; Darius laughed, hoisting the boy onto his broad shoulders.

Ryan’s girlfriend turned to him, eyes dinner-plate wide. "Does your squad normally spar like this?"

Ryan simply sank his face into his palms. "I need a transfer."

A few tiers up, Gideon allowed the barest trace of an approving smile to cross his face.

Felix laughed, rolling his shoulder to ease the stiffness.

Aria walked over, running a thumb across the cut on her brow. "Rematch."

"Anytime."

"Not on my watch," Mira interjected flatly, planting herself between the two of them.

Felix’s face dropped into exaggerated disappointment while Aria let out an uncharacteristic, clear laugh.

Walking out through the athlete tunnel, Felix glanced back over his shoulder at the pulverized arena floor, shattered ice, cracked stone plates, and lingering traces of thermal displacement.

His regeneration was already closing the superficial cuts along his cheek and arms, but his mind remained sharply alert.

His Ultra III proficiency had held up against an apex offensive elementalist. His mana shaping, internal reinforcement, and point-blank kinetic control were fully stabilized.

There was still depth to explore. A great deal more.

Felix smiled, wiping a smear of dust from his neck. Sunday had turned out to be exceptionally well spent.
