**Acheron Deep — Medical Facility**

The rehabilitation specialist who’d attempted to enter Liora Morven’s mind lay unconscious in the medical wing. Dr. Evelyn Hart stood over the readings, her expression grim, severe neurological backlash, but not life-threatening.

"How much of her mana actually entered the prisoner’s mind?" she asked.Full novel: The Mad Healer: My Patients Are Humanity’s Most Dangerous Yanderes — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The attending doctor checked the numbers again. "Very little."

"Then why was the backlash this severe?"

"We don’t know." He hesitated. "It wasn’t just resistance. It looked almost like—" He stopped himself.

"Like what?"

"Like something attacked her."

Evelyn looked back through the observation window at the unconscious woman. It sounded absurd. It was also the closest thing to an accurate description either of them had.

She’d spent decades studying the human mind: trauma, magical interference, mental contamination, damage from mana overexposure, all of it.

This wasn’t any of that. The prisoner’s mind hadn’t rejected the foreign mana. It had struck back at it.

"Has Gideon been told?"

"Not yet."

"Tell him. I’ll speak to Director Voss myself." Her gaze hardened. "Until we understand what actually happened in there, nobody goes into that prisoner’s mind again."

Gideon had already read the preliminary report by the time he reached Liora’s cell. The rehabilitation team had tried several approaches with the remaining Tier 1 candidates, most of them failures and Liora had barely engaged with anyone at all until today, which made today’s outcome worse, not better.

Through the observation window he could see her sitting on the bed, pink hair falling across her face, no longer crying, just staring at her own hands. He pressed the comm.

"Liora."

Her shoulders tensed instantly. She didn’t answer.

"You’re not in trouble." Still nothing. "The psychologist who was with you is alive."

Her fingers curled. "Is she...?"

"Receiving treatment."

Liora lowered her head. "I’m sorry."

"You didn’t attack her on purpose."

"But I did."

"No, you didn’t."

She finally looked up at the window, eyes full of fear. "I told her to stay away. I warned her." Her voice dropped lower. "I always warn them."

Gideon had nothing to say to that.

"I don’t want to become that thing again," Liora whispered, barely audible and Gideon’s expression shifted.

He’d read her file. He knew what had happened four years ago, knew exactly what she’d done. Reading it in a report was nothing like hearing the fear underneath her voice now.

"You won’t be forced to use your ability."

"That’s not enough."

"Why not?"

"Because it’s still inside me." She pressed both hands against her head. "I can feel it. Sometimes it feels like it’s waiting."

"Waiting for what?"

Her eyes lifted slowly. "For me to get strong enough to let it out."

The cell went silent. Gideon stepped back from the window with no answer at all.

**The Rehabilitation Division**

Elena Voss and Dr. Hart sat in the conference room while Gideon finished relaying his report.

"The psychologist is stable," Evelyn said, "but I’m not authorizing another mental intervention. Not until we know more."

"What exactly happened in there?" Elena asked.

"I don’t know. Her mana entered Liora’s mind, and then something attacked it."

"Something."

"I don’t have a better word for it. Human minds don’t normally do that."

"She’s not normal," Gideon said, arms crossed.

"No," Evelyn agreed. "That’s exactly the problem."

A long silence passed before Elena finally asked, "Do you think we can help her?"

"Not with what we currently understand," Gideon said.

"And she won’t cooperate with anyone else."

"I know."

"Then maybe that’s exactly why we shouldn’t rush another attempt," Evelyn said.

Elena nodded slowly. "Keep this classified within the program. No unnecessary personnel, and absolutely nothing reaches the other prisoners."

"Understood," Gideon said.

The meeting ended there, but the real question stayed behind in the room with them: what exactly was living inside Liora Morven?

**Acheron Deep — Later That Night**

Liora lay awake, unable to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, they came back, dozens of faces, people she’d known for years, people who’d laughed beside her, fought beside her, trusted her.

And then the moment everything changed. Their confusion. Their fear. Their voices, and then no voices at all. She remembered every movement, every scream, every body remembered carrying them out of the rift one by one, laying them down, and the words she’d repeated afterward like a prayer.

*I’m a monster. I killed them. Please lock me away. Please kill me.*

Her breathing sped up. "No." She pressed her palms over her ears. "I don’t want to remember."

Something stirred underneath her skin: a faint black aura flickering to life around her fingers.

She froze instantly. "No." It vanished, and she curled into a tight ball on the bed. "Stay away from me. I don’t want you."

For several minutes nothing happened. Then, somewhere deep inside her own mind, she felt. Something that already knew she was afraid. Something that had been waiting.

She squeezed her eyes shut. "Please. Don’t take me again."

The darkness receded, but the fear stayed exactly where it was.

Because Liora knew better than anyone in this building: it wasn’t gone.

It was only waiting.
