An unfamiliar name. Mu Yining straightened her back and thought desperately, trying to recall where she had heard it before.

“Chu Yu… Chu Yu, Chu… Yu? That Chu Yu? Then I can’t just stand by and watch.” Chu Yu’s name and figure flashed continuously across Mu Yining’s mind. In her past life, this man was a god-like presence—the leader of the Thunder Base. The only reason they had ever met was thanks to that idiot, Qiao Weier.

During an outing mission, Mu Yining had led the base’s top fighters, fully equipped and ready to go. Their goal was to secure a stretch of land northeast of the base. It was packed with residential buildings; clearing it out would allow the base to expand significantly, ensuring the refugees seeking shelter wouldn’t be left without a roof over their heads.Full novel: The Max-Level Expert Overthrew the Apocalypse — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was meant to be a clearing operation, and despite being a residential area, the number of zombies was small. Most evolved zombies already possessed enough intelligence not to linger in one spot for long, so their mission was simply to scan for potential dangers and sweep the area systematically.

The mission wasn’t particularly difficult, but it was tedious. Qiao Weier, flaunting her status as a Water Ability User, kept trying to show off in front of everyone.

Yet, having never held a weapon in her life, she couldn’t stop screaming the moment she encountered zombies, ultimately drawing a massive horde toward them. To ensure the safe evacuation of the others, Mu Yining lured the horde away alone. However, she overestimated her own capabilities. Exhausted and unable to handle the endless wave of zombies, she was on the verge of ending her own life when Chu Yu appeared out of nowhere, bringing his men to save her from the brink of death.

Only after that did Mu Yining realize just how powerful the Thunder Base truly was. Though the two bases were allies, Mu Yining knew that her Faraway Base had always been under Chu Yu’s protection.

She wondered if the two bases maintained any contact after her death.

Snapping back to reality, Mu Yining walked toward the supermarket entrance without a second thought. She recalled Xiaoyao into the space, left Alan at the doorway to cover her, and prepared to settle her debt of gratitude from her past life today.

As Mu Yining pushed open the main door, she saw a figure hovering on the brink of death, still struggling to run. His body was covered in deep gashes, and the fresh blood continuously enticed the zombies pursuing him from behind.

Seeing someone walk in, he didn’t even have the strength left to speak properly, yet he used every ounce of energy to roar, “Get the hell out! Are you looking to die? Get out right now and lock the door!” Saying that, he let out a furious growl, tossed aside the gun on his shoulder, stripped off his top, pulled out a dagger, and slashed fiercely across his own forearm. Blood gushed out instantly, and the zombies made no attempt to hide their frenzy.

“Idiot!” Mu Yining didn’t have time to waste scolding him. Pulling out Qingling, she charged straight into the horde. With a few light swings of her arm, more than a dozen zombie heads hit the ground. Though the zombies in front took notice, the blood of a living human proved far more irresistible, and they kept chasing after the man.

Mu Yining sprang up with all her strength, stepping on the heads of zombies to leap onto the supermarket display shelves. After a few bounds, she reached the highest point of the supermarket. Summoning the small snake, she had it spew a torrent of fire toward the crowd below while she unleashed lightning. Before the battle could even truly begin, it was already over.

By now, the shirtless man was a gruesome sight. Supporting himself against a shelf with a dagger in hand and covered in blood and filth, he finally collapsed slowly to the ground.

Fearing that the commotion here would attract other zombies, Mu Yining checked to make sure he was still breathing. He was merely in a deep coma, though the wounds across his body had already turned black. She called Alan over, and together they moved him into the space.

Turning around, she headed up to the second floor. Seeing how desperately this man had fought, he had undoubtedly been protecting Chu Yu. She needed to find where Chu Yu was.
