The pitch-black darkness of the apocalyptic night settled heavily over Ashford, broken only by the distant, unnatural radiance of the sky rifts and the towering pillar of white light where the dungeon had erupted three miles to the east.

Inside Convenience Store #402, however, the air was warm, still, and devoid of the choking stench of ozone and scorched earth that hung over 4th Street.

Elias Mercer stood at the center of the main aisle, his arms crossed over his chest as he surveyed the space he now legally owned. Beside him, Mr. Henderson sat on a overturned plastic crate, quietly chewing on a cracker from a newly opened box of emergency rations, while Officer Marcus Reed rested against a stack of bottled water cases, his leg tightly bound with sterile gauze.Full novel: The Merchant Who Bought the Apocalypse — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"You've been staring at that empty air for ten minutes, son," Mr. Henderson said softly, wiping his wire-rimmed glasses with the corner of his shirt. "I take it whatever interface you're looking at has more numbers than a corporate tax audit?"

"Precisely," Elias replied without turning his head.

Floating before his eyes was the primary management sub-menu of the Last Merchant System, displaying the detailed structural diagnostic of his newly acquired property.

[PROPERTY REGISTRY: CONVENIENCE STORE #402] [LOCATION: CORNER OF 4TH & OAK STREET, SECTOR 7] [LEGAL OWNER: ELIAS MERCER (LAST MERCHANT - TIER 1)] [STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: 62% - COMPROMISED] [PROPERTY STATUS: TIER 1 SAFE ZONE (ACTIVE)] [DAILY MAINTENANCE COST: 2.00 SC / 24 HOURS] [CURRENT CAPITAL: 25.95 SC]

Elias expanded the structural breakdown tab.

[PHYSICAL LAYOUT & DIAGNOSTIC:] - MAIN TRADING FLOOR: 1,200 SQ FT (GLASS FRONT SHATTERED, LIGHTING OFFLINE, DEBRIS PRESENT) - BACK STOCKROOM: 450 SQ FT (STORAGE SHELVING INTACT, AUXILIARY GENERATOR OFFLINE) - BASEMENT VAULT: 300 SQ FT (REINFORCED STEEL DOOR, UNREGISTERED INVENTORY DETECTED) - REFRIGERATION UNITS: OFFLINE (COMPRESSOR DAMAGE - REPAIRABLE) - SECURITY SHUTTERS: JAMMED (MANUAL OVERRIDE AVAILABLE)

"A sixty-two percent structural integrity rating," Elias muttered under his breath. "In logistics, anything below seventy percent is classified as a high-risk operational liability."

"Is that bad?" Marcus Reed asked, his voice strained as he shifted his bandaged leg. The Vanguard officer was looking much better than he had twenty minutes ago, his natural stamina slowly returning thanks to the antiseptic wipes and bandages Elias had provided from the store's stock. "The wall outside held off a Tier 1 monster like it was made of paper."

"The barrier is an absolute domain rule, Officer Reed," Elias explained, swiping his finger through the holographic text to bring up the maintenance ledger. "It repels hostile entities based on System logic, not physical mass. But the barrier's energy efficiency relies on the physical integrity of the anchor structure. The more ruined the store remains, the higher the ambient energy leak. If the structural integrity drops below fifty percent, the daily maintenance cost doubles from two credits to four."

Marcus winced. "Four credits a day just to keep the roof over our heads?"

"Which means," Elias said, his eyes scanning the store's interior, "rebuilding and renovating this place isn't an aesthetic choice. It is a financial imperative."

He stepped past the checkout register and walked toward the back of the store, pushing open the heavy swing door that led into the rear stockroom. The room was pitch black, smelling faintly of stale cardboard, motor oil, and iron.

Elias focused his perception, activating UNIVERSAL ACQUISITION and SYSTEM LEDGER.

Instantly, a soft golden grid washed over the dark room, highlighting every crate, box, and mechanical component stored inside:

[COMMERCIAL DIESEL GENERATOR (INTERNAL DAMAGE) - SALVAGE VALUE: 3.20 SC | REPAIR COST: 2.50 SC] [UNOPENED CASE OF INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES (x12) - VALUE: 1.80 SC] [EMERGENCY MEDICAL FIRST-AID REFILL PACK (x3) - VALUE: 2.40 SC] [STAINLESS STEEL SHELVING UNITS (x4) - VALUE: 1.20 SC] [HEAVY-DUTY BASEMENT VAULT DOOR (REINFORCED CAST IRON) - VALUE: 8.50 SC]

Elias approached the diesel generator sitting in the corner. It was a rugged, six-cylinder emergency power unit that had been rendered useless when the planetary integration shockwave fried the local electrical grid.

He tapped the floating diagnostic menu attached to the machine.

[ITEM: AUXILIARY POWER GENERATOR] [STATUS: NON-FUNCTIONAL (CONVENTIONAL ELECTRICITY DEAD)] [SYSTEM UPGRADE OPTION AVAILABLE:] - CONVERT TO: TIER 1 MANA-DRIVE POWER UNIT - FUNCTION: CONVERTS AMBIENT SAFE ZONE ETHER INTO STABLE ELECTRICITY - COST: 2.50 SYSTEM CREDITS

Elias calculated his reserves. He had 25.95 SC. Spending 2.50 SC was a ten percent drawdown of his available capital, but light and power were essential for establishing a commercial hub. A dark, ruined store looked like a tomb; a brightly lit, powered sanctuary in the middle of a blacked-out city was a beacon that would attract paying customers.

"Confirm upgrade," Elias said firmly.

[2.50 SC DEDUCTED FROM LEDGER. REMAINING BALANCE: 23.45 SC.] [CONVERTING AUXILIARY GENERATOR TO TIER 1 MANA-DRIVE POWER UNIT...]

A brilliant pulse of sapphire light erupted from the center of the generator. The metal plates groaned as the internal combustion components dissolved, rearranging themselves into intricate, glowing blue conduits that hummed with a low, resonant frequency.

Vrrrrmmmmm...

The deep, quiet hum vibrated through the floorboards.

Instantly, the overhead LED strip lights throughout the stockroom and the main trading floor flickered, surged, and burst into bright, steady white light. The soft, rhythmic purr of the commercial refrigeration units kicked back to life in the front aisle.

"Good lord!" Mr. Henderson called out from the front, shielding his eyes from the sudden brightness. "The lights! Elias, you got the power working!"

Elias walked back into the main trading floor. The contrast was staggering. Outside the store, 4th Street was an abyss of pitch-black shadows, burning wreckage, and distant, terrifying roars. Inside Convenience Store #402, the clean tile floors, neat rows of shelves, and warm ceiling lights created an oasis of absolute order amidst the apocalypse.

[PROPERTY DIAGNOSTIC UPDATED] [MANA-DRIVE POWER UNIT: ONLINE] [REFRIGERATION & INFRASTRUCTURE: FUNCTIONAL] [STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY INCREASED: 62% -> 74%] [DAILY MAINTENANCE COST STABILIZED: 2.00 SC / 24 HOURS]

Elias smiled faintly. Rebuilding the power grid had automatically boosted the property's integrity rating above the seventy percent threshold, securing the lower maintenance rate.

Next, he walked over to the front entrance. The massive glass display window beside the double doors was completely shattered, leaving a gaping six-foot hole where glass had rained onto the sidewalk earlier. Though the blue runes of the Safe Zone barrier covered the opening like an invisible curtain, leaving it unsealed made the store look vulnerable and exposed.

He targeted the shattered window frame with his interface.

[STRUCTURE REPAIR OPTION: FRONT DISPLAY WINDOW] [UPGRADE TO: REINFORCED ETHER-GLASS (TIER 1)] - DURABILITY: HIGH (RESISTANT TO PHYSICAL & ELEMENTAL IMPACT) - OPTICAL CLARITY: ONE-WAY TINGE (VIEWABLE FROM INSIDE, REFLECTIVE FROM OUTSIDE) - COST: 3.00 SYSTEM CREDITS

"Confirm window repair," Elias commanded.

[3.00 SC DEDUCTED. REMAINING BALANCE: 20.45 SC.]

Golden light swept across the jagged metal frame. Like liquid crystal solidifying in real time, smooth, crystal-clear glass grew across the frame, seamlessly sealing the opening. From inside, Elias could see out onto the dark street with crystal clarity, but from the outside, the window reflected the street like a polished silver mirror, concealing the store's interior from wandering beasts.

[STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY INCREASED: 74% -> 88%] [CONVENIENCE STORE #402 IS NOW FULLY OPERATIONAL AS A TIER 1 TRADING POST.]

Marcus Reed dragged himself up against the counter, watching Elias work with an expression bordering on reverence.

"I've seen Guild commanders spend millions of dollars on fortification spells during emergency drills back in the city," Reed murmured, shaking his head. "You just restored a destroyed building in three minutes using floating menus. What kind of class did you say you had again?"

"Last Merchant," Elias replied, walking behind the checkout counter and tapping the electronic cash register.

With the power restored, the register display lit up, automatically syncing with his System Ledger:

[POINT OF SALE INTERFACE: ACTIVE] [CONNECTED CURRENCY: SYSTEM CREDITS (SC) & BARTER EVALUATION ENGINE] [CURRENT STORE INVENTORY VALUE: 42.80 SC]

Elias turned to face Reed and Mr. Henderson. His posture was crisp, his demeanor authoritative yet collected.

"Now that the physical asset is stabilized," Elias said, "we need to discuss operational strategy. As of this moment, Convenience Store #402 is no longer just a building. It is the first registered safe trading post in Ashford."

"A trading post?" Mr. Henderson asked, scratching his chin. "Elias, the city is crawling with monsters. People are dying out there. Who's going to come shopping?"

"Everyone who wants to survive," Elias answered flatly. "Consider the reality of our situation, Mr. Henderson. Within forty-eight hours, every survivor who awakened a combat class will exhaust their starting stamina and health potions. Their weapons will dull. Their water will run out. They cannot rest in the open streets without being hunted by monsters like the ones we saw today."

He tapped the glass counter. "They will need three things to stay alive: a safe place to sleep where monsters cannot reach them, clean food and water to regenerate their resources, and medical supplies to patch their wounds. The army isn't coming. The municipal government has collapsed. I am the only one who can provide all three under absolute protection."

Marcus Reed nodded slowly, his military discipline recognizing the cold, undeniable truth of Elias's analysis. "Resource monopoly. If you're the only safe zone in the district, you control the survival economy."

"Precisely," Elias said. "And I don't intend to give anything away for free. Compassion without economic structure is just suicide in an apocalypse."

Before Mr. Henderson could respond, Elias’s perception twitched. A sharp chime echoed inside his mind.

[PROXIMITY WARNING] [MULTIPLE UNREGISTERED HUMAN SIGNALS APPROACHING SAFE ZONE BOUNDARY (30 YARDS)]

Elias turned his eyes toward the front door.

Through the one-way Ether-Glass window, he saw three figures stumbling down the middle of 4th Street. They were gasping for breath, covered in soot, blood, and road grime. One of them, a tall man holding a blood-stained iron pipe, was dragging a younger woman whose arm hung limply at her side. Behind them, a third survivor—a young man in a torn jacket—kept glancing back into the shadows with terror-stricken eyes.

Above their heads, glowing text tags hovered in the dark:

[HUMAN SURVIVOR - CLASS: BERSERKER (TIER 1) - CONDITION: EXHAUSTED] [HUMAN SURVIVOR - CLASS: UNKNOWN (UNAWAKENED) - CONDITION: SEVERE CONCUSSION] [HUMAN SURVIVOR - CLASS: SCOUT (TIER 1) - CONDITION: PANICKED]

Behind the fleeing trio, deep in the dark alleyway between the bank and the pharmacy, two pairs of crimson eyes ignited in the shadows. Low, guttural growls echoed off the brick walls as a pair of Tier 1 Shadow Stalkers slunk out into the open, stalking their exhausted prey.

"Help!" the Scout screamed, his cracked voice echoing down the street as he spotted the brightly lit store sign. "Is anyone in there?! Please! Open the door!"

Mr. Henderson gasped, stepping forward. "Elias! They're being chased!"

Marcus Reed instinctively reached for his sidearm, but his holster was empty, lost during his crash earlier. He looked at Elias, waiting for the merchant's call.

Elias did not panic. He adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, stepped out from behind the register, and walked calmly toward the double glass doors.

He looked at his floating System Ledger:

[CURRENT BALANCE: 20.45 SC] [STORE INVENTORY: FOOD, WATER, MEDICAL SUPPLIES, SAFE LODGING] [POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS AT THE DOOR: 3]

Elias reached out and flipped the hanging sign on the front door from CLOSED to OPEN.

The golden runes along the doorframe flared brightly, casting a warm, welcoming light out onto the blood-stained pavement of 4th Street.

"Let them reach the threshold, Officer Reed," Elias said, his voice smooth, steady, and terrifyingly confident in the dark. "Our first real customers have arrived."
