The hum of the Mana-Drive Power Unit echoed softly beneath the clean floorboards of Convenience Store #402, a low, comforting vibration that felt entirely alien against the backdrop of the dying world outside. Overhead, LED strips cast a brilliant, white glow across the polished linoleum, illuminating organized shelves of mineral water, canned stew, and first-aid kits.

Through the clear, reinforced pane of the new Ether-Glass front window, the three approaching figures looked less like heroes and more like hunted animals.

"Elias! Look!" Mr. Henderson called out from behind the checkout counter, his hands clutching a heavy push broom. "There are people coming!"Full novel: The Merchant Who Bought the Apocalypse — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Elias Mercer did not shift from his position behind the register. His dark eyes, sharp and analytical, measured the fleeing trio through the glass. He activated his passive skill, UNIVERSAL ACQUISITION, focusing his perception across the twenty-yard expanse between the store's threshold and the dark street.

Instant status tags flared to life above the survivors' heads:

[HUMAN SURVIVOR: BRANT THORNE] [CLASS: BERSERKER (TIER 1) - LEVEL 2] [HEALTH: 42/140 - STATUS: EXHAUSTED, MINOR CRANIAL CONTUSION] [WEAPON: CRACKED TWO-HANDED FIRE AXE (VALUE: 1.80 SC)]

[HUMAN SURVIVOR: CLARA LYNCH] [CLASS: SCOUT (TIER 1) - LEVEL 2] [HEALTH: 35/90 - STATUS: STAMINA DEPLETED, DEHYDRATED] [WEAPON: DULL DUAL DAGGERS (VALUE: 0.90 SC)]

[HUMAN SURVIVOR: SAMUEL RICE] [CLASS: NONE (CIVILIAN)] [HEALTH: 18/80 - STATUS: CONCUSSED, SEVERE INTERNAL BLEEDING] [INVENTORY: WEARING DAMAGED CIVILIAN CLOTHING]

Behind them, skittering through the dense smoke and shadow of Oak Street, were four slender, four-legged beasts with elongated limbs and skin like wet slate. Their eyes glowed with sickly green luminescence, and their tails ended in barbed, needle-thin spikes.

[MONSTER: SHADOW STALKER (TIER 1) x4] [STATUS: HUNTING - AGGRESSIVE] [COMBAT EVALUATION: DANGEROUS TO DEHYDRATED/INJURED TARGETS]

"Door's open! In here!" Officer Marcus Reed shouted from where he rested near the magazine rack, his bandaged leg propped up on a folding stool. He held his service pistol loosely, though his eyes were narrowed with tactical concern. "Move your asses!"

Brant Thorne, the towering Berserker carrying the unconscious Samuel Rice over his shoulder, burst onto the store's concrete forecourt. His boots skidded across the broken pavement. Clara Lynch trailed behind him, her daggers trembling in her blood-stained hands as she kept glancing backward at the skittering Shadow Stalkers.

"Brant, there's a light ahead!" Clara gasped, her lungs wheezing. "A store... it has power!"

"Doesn't matter if it's lit!" Brant grunted, sweat and grime pouring down his bruised face. "Keep moving! If those things flank us, we're dead!"

The lead Shadow Stalker lunged, its barbed tail whipping forward like a black spear, aiming straight for Clara's exposed neck.

Clara screamed, stumbling onto her knees right at the edge of the property line.

[SYSTEM PROMPT: THREE UNREGISTERED HUMANS ATTEMPTING ENTRY TO SAFE ZONE (TIER 1).] [PERMIT ACCESS?]

Deny hostiles. Grant entry to human survivors, Elias commanded silently.

[AUTHORIZATION REGISTERED.]

Clara scrambled forward, her palms slapping onto the threshold linoleum. Brant threw himself through the open double doors a second later, tumbling heavily onto the floor with the unconscious civilian.

WHACK!

The attacking Shadow Stalker collided with the absolute domain barrier less than three inches behind Clara's boots. The golden runes along the doorframe erupted in a blinding flash of kinetic force. The monster let out a high-pitched, metallic shriek as its front limbs snapped under the recoil of its own velocity, bouncing backward onto the asphalt in a tangled heap.

The three remaining Shadow Stalkers hissed, their needle-tails whipping frantically as they circled the perimeter of the store. They struck the Ether-Glass window twice, but the reinforced barrier flared with pale blue etheric light, absorbing the blows without a single crack.

Inside, silence crashed down upon the survivors, broken only by their ragged, frantic gasps for air.

Brant Thorne rolled onto his back, his heavy axe clattering against the floor tiles. He stared up at the bright LED light fixtures, then at the intact ceiling, and finally at Elias, who stood calmly behind the glass register in a crisp, spotless shirt.

"What... what is this place?" Brant stammered, his chest heaving. "A bunker? A high-level sanctuary spell?"

"It's Convenience Store #402," Elias replied smoothly, stepping out from behind the counter. "And you are inside my private property. Welcome."

Clara remained on her hands and knees, staring wide-eyed at the glowing barrier outside where four Shadow Stalkers were now clawing uselessly at the air. "They... they can't get in."

"No," Elias said. "They cannot. As long as you are inside this perimeter, you are safe from Tier 1 threats. However, safety, space, and light inside this establishment carry a cost."

Brant pushed himself up, his eyes hardening as he looked at Elias. He noticed the lack of armor, the absence of a weapon, and the distinct lack of a combat aura around the young man. "A cost? Man, we just barely survived a nightmare out there! Sam is dying—he's got internal bleeding! Do you have medical supplies?"

"I do," Elias said, pointing toward the fully stocked glass cabinet beside the counter. Inside sat roll bandages, antiseptic sprays, splints, and low-grade System Health Salves glowing with faint blue light. "I have medical supplies, purified mineral water, high-calorie food, and secure lodging."

Brant immediately reached toward the cabinet. "Give me a salve! Quick!"

Click.

Before Brant's hand could touch the glass handle, a translucent blue field formed over the cabinet door, locking it tight.

[SYSTEM SECURITY ACTIVE: ACCESS DENIED WITHOUT TRANSACTION CONFIRMATION]

Brant froze, his forehead veins bulging as anger surged through his tired body. He gripped the shaft of his fire axe. "Listen to me, storekeeper. My buddy is bleeding out. If you've got medicine, hand it over! We're all humans here!"

Behind them, Officer Reed cleared his throat sharply, lifting his police badge attached to his belt. "Easy, son. Lower the axe."

This chapter was copied from the author's official page without consent, where readers can support the work.

Brant glanced back at Reed, recognizing the uniform. "Officer? You're letting him hoard medicine while people bleed?"

"I'm alive because I respected his rules," Reed said calmly, though his voice was grave. "He saved my life twenty minutes ago. But he isn't a charity. If you want something here, you buy it."

Elias didn't flinch at Brant's towering height or his iron axe. He stood with his hands resting lightly behind his back, his voice cool and devoid of emotion.

"Mr. Thorne," Elias said, his voice echoing cleanly in the store. "I understand your distress. But let us establish reality before we proceed further. You did not build this barrier. You do not pay the daily maintenance fees required to keep these lights on, nor did you invest the capital to reinforce these windows against the monsters outside."

Brant gritted his teeth, but his grip on the axe loosened slightly.

"You brought your wounded friend into my establishment because it offered you life," Elias continued, pacing slowly toward the register. "I am willing to extend that life to all three of you. But I run a business, not a relief shelter. In this new world, moral appeals will not fix a generator or pay a System ledger. Transactions will."

Clara looked up from the floor, her eyes bloodshot. "We... we don't have any of those blue credits you're talking about! The System only integrated us an hour ago! We haven't killed enough monsters to earn money!"

"System Credits are the primary currency, but they are not the only form of value," Elias replied. He tapped his index finger against the glass register, summoning a floating blue ledger screen that flipped around to face the survivors.

[SYSTEM TRADING INTERFACE - CONVENIENCE STORE #402] [LISTED GOOD: JUNIOR HEALTH SALVE (TIER 1) - PRICE: 3.50 SC] [LISTED GOOD: BOTTLED SPRING WATER (500ML) - PRICE: 0.15 SC] [LISTED GOOD: CANNED BEEF STEW - PRICE: 0.25 SC]

"My passive ability, UNIVERSAL ACQUISITION, evaluates raw goods, equipment, monster materials, and items of intrinsic value," Elias explained. "If you do not possess System Credits, you may barter."

Brant looked down at his blood-stained axe, then at his pockets. "Barter? With what? We ran out of our apartment building with whatever we could carry!"

"Everything has a price," Elias said simply. "Show me what you have."

Brant hesitated, looking down at Samuel, whose breathing was becoming shallow and ragged. With a grunt of frustration, Brant unclasped a heavy leather pouch from his belt and dumped its contents onto the counter.

Out tumbled two dull green stone fragments, a jagged obsidian claw from a Void Hound they had slain earlier, a silver wrist-chronometer, and a heavy brass ring set with a small garnet.

Elias stepped up to the counter and extended his right hand over the pile. A soft golden grid projected from his palm, scanning each item individually.

Floating tags immediately appeared above the pile, visible to both Elias and the survivors:

[ITEM: MONSTER ESSENCE SHARD (DULL) x2 - VALUE: 2.00 SC EACH (TOTAL: 4.00 SC)] [ITEM: SEVERED VOID HOUND CLAW (TIER 1) x1 - VALUE: 1.10 SC] [ITEM: SILVER WRIST-CHRONOMETER (MECHANICAL) - VALUE: 1.25 SC] [ITEM: BRASS & GARNET RING (NON-MAGICAL) - VALUE: 0.85 SC]

[TOTAL APPRAISED VALUE: 7.20 SYSTEM CREDITS]

Brant's eyes widened as he stared at the glowing numbers. "Seven... seven point two credits? Those green stones are worth two credits each?"

"Monster Essence Shards are refined mana condensations," Elias explained, his mental ledger instantly recording the market liquidity of the items. "They are valuable raw materials for crafting and System fuel. The clock and ring carry material and scrap value. The total purchasing power of your pile is exactly 7.20 System Credits."

Clara scrambled to her feet, leaning over the counter. "Is that enough? Is that enough to save Sam?"

"Let us calculate," Elias said smoothly.

He tapped the register screen, opening a clean contract draft.

[CONTRACT #001: EMERGENCY MEDICAL & SUPPLY PURCHASE] [PARTY A: ELIAS MERCER (LAST MERCHANT)] [PARTY B: BRANT THORNE / CLARA LYNCH]

[PURCHASED ITEMS:]

[TOTAL COST: 6.45 SYSTEM CREDITS] [TRADE OFFER VALUE: 7.20 SYSTEM CREDITS] [REMAINING CHANGE: 0.75 SYSTEM CREDITS]

Brant stared at the broken-down invoice. It was clean, transparent, and mathematically unquestionable. There was no extortionate gouging, no hidden trickery—just cold, precise commerce in a room surrounded by blood and monsters.

"You're giving us change?" Brant asked, his voice laced with disbelief.

"A merchant who cheats his first customers creates bad debt and short-lived markets," Elias said calmly. "I do not cheat. I trade."

Elias waved his hand across the contract screen.

[PLEASE CONFIRM CONTRACT #001 BY PRESSING YOUR PALM TO THE LEDGER.]

Brant didn't hesitate this time. He stepped forward and pressed his calloused, blood-stained palm against the glowing blue interface.

Ding!

A pleasant, golden chime echoed through the store.

[CONTRACT #001 EXECUTED SUCCESSFULLY.] [TRANSFERRING ASSETS...]

The pile of items on the counter—the green stones, the claw, the watch, and the ring—dissolved into glittering streams of golden data, instantly depositing into Elias's System inventory ledger.

Simultaneously, the glass door of the medical cabinet unlocked with a crisp click. A crate containing three cold bottles of mineral water, two cans of stew, a pack of sterile bandages, and a glowing vial of Junior Health Salve slid across the counter toward Brant.

[SYSTEM LEDGER UPDATE:] [PREVIOUS BALANCE: 20.45 SC] [ACQUIRED GOODS VALUE: +7.20 SC] [EXCHANGED INVENTORY VALUE: -6.45 SC] [NET PROFIT (MARGIN ADJUSTED): +2.65 SC] [CURRENT SYSTEM BALANCE: 23.10 SYSTEM CREDITS]

Brant grabbed the glowing vial of Health Salve and dropped to his knees beside Samuel. Following the floating instruction prompt above the bottle, he uncorked it and poured the shimmering blue liquid over the deep, purple bruising on Samuel's chest and neck.

The effect was instantaneous.

The blue salve melted into Samuel's skin like liquid light. The dark internal bleeding under his pale skin visibly receded, his ragged breathing stabilized, and his eyes flickered open with a weak gasp.

"Sam!" Clara cried out, rushing to pull him up into a sitting position. "You're okay! You're alive!"

Samuel blinked, looking around at the bright, clean store in confusion. "Where... where are we? Did we make it to a hospital?"

"No," Brant chuckled, a weary, relieved smile finally breaking through his hard face. He looked up at Elias, who was already back behind the register, carefully logging the two Monster Essence Shards into his long-term storage ledger. "We made it to a store."

Officer Reed leaned back against the wall with a quiet laugh. "Told you. The man runs a tight shop."

Clara took one of the water bottles, opened it, and handed it to Samuel before taking a long, greedy gulp from her own. The cold, crisp water revived her parched throat, bringing a flush of healthy color back to her cheeks.

"Mr. Mercer," Clara said, stepping up to the counter and bowing her head respectfully. "Thank you. Truly."

"There is no need for thanks, Miss Lynch," Elias replied without looking up from his interface screen. "You provided valuable raw materials, and I provided essential goods. It was a fair transaction."

He closed the trade window and looked at his updated status screen.

[HOST: ELIAS MERCER] [CLASS: LAST MERCHANT (TIER 1)] [LEVEL: 1 (25/100 EXP)] [PROPERTY: CONVENIENCE STORE #402 (SAFE ZONE TIER 1)] [SYSTEM CREDITS: 23.10 SC] [UNCLAIMED MONSTER MATERIALS: 2x ESSENCE SHARDS, 1x VOID CLAW]

Elias mentally flagged the two Monster Essence Shards. These shards are worth 2.00 SC in raw liquidation, but if I hold them until Gideon Rusk or another crafting class arrives, their value in energy conversion will increase by at least forty percent. Inventory holding yields higher margins than immediate liquidation.

Outside, night had fully fallen over Ashford.

The sky remained a fractured canopy of purple rifts and bleeding stars. Shadows stretched long across Oak Street, and the howl of distant, higher-tier beasts echoed through the concrete canyons of the city.

Inside Convenience Store #402, however, the lights burned bright, the air was warm, and five human beings sat safely behind an impenetrable wall of golden force.

Brant Thorne walked over to one of the empty aisles, sat down against the wall, and rested his axe beside him. "If you're charging lodging, storekeeper, where do we sleep?"

"The floor in aisle two is clean," Elias said, pointing toward the back. "Mr. Henderson has extra cardboard boxes in the storage room if you require bedding. Tomorrow morning, access to the front entrance will reopen at 06:00 AM."

Brant nodded, settling back with a tired sigh. "Fair enough."

Elias walked over to the front entrance. He looked out into the pitch-black street, where the four Shadow Stalkers had finally given up, melting back into the darkness.

In the far distance, near the city center, a pillar of golden light erupted into the clouds—the sign of a newly spawned System Dungeon.

Elias reached out and tapped the brass frame of the store sign hanging inside the door, setting its status for the night.

[TRADING POST #402: OPEN FOR BUSINESS] [CURRENCY ACCEPTED: SYSTEM CREDITS / RAW MATERIALS / ASSETS]

Elias stood in the doorway, his eyes reflecting the distant magical fires burning across Ashford.

The apocalypse had taken everything from humanity in a single afternoon. It had destroyed their homes, their money, and their peace. But standing inside his lit, secure domain, Elias Mercer knew that as long as people needed to survive, they would always need a merchant.

And the market was just getting started.
