The neon OPEN sign buzzed with a steady, sapphire light that cut through the impenetrable darkness of Oak Street.

Inside Convenience Store #402, the atmosphere was quietly subdued, a sharp contrast to the monstrous symphony raging in the distance. The hum of the freshly converted Tier 1 Mana-Drive Power Unit provided a comforting background noise, keeping the bright LED strips illuminated and the refrigerated display cases icy cold.

Behind the front register, Elias Mercer sat on a high stool, his eyes scanning his floating System interface. His current balance stood at 23.10 System Credits. Across the aisle, Samuel Rice was resting peacefully on a improvised pallet of flattened cardboard boxes, his concussion stabilized thanks to the Junior Health Salve. Brant Thorne sat against the wall, meticulously wiping down his heavy iron greaves with a damp rag, while Clara Lynch leaned against a shelving unit, silently sharpening her hunting knife. Nearby, Officer Marcus Reed was testing his weight on his bandaged leg, nodding approvingly at the store’s impenetrable barrier.Full novel: The Merchant Who Bought the Apocalypse — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"I still can't get over the fact that a convenience store has electricity while the rest of Ashford is burning," Marcus remarked quietly, leaning his back against a rack of magazines. "If word gets out about this place, half the survivors in Sector 7 are going to break down your door."

"They are welcome to come," Elias replied without looking up from his ledger. "As long as they understand that entry is a commercial transaction, not a public charity."

"You're a cold bastard, Mercer," Brant grunted from the corner, though there was no real malice in his voice. The Berserker owed his friend’s life to Elias's strict, uncompromising trade terms. "Practical, but cold."

"Indiscriminate charity is mathematically unsustainable," Elias said smoothly. "If I grant free entry and free supplies to everyone who asks, my inventory empties in an hour. My balance drops below the daily property maintenance fee, the Safe Zone barrier collapses, and we all get eaten by Void Hounds. Structure creates safety."

Before Brant could retort, a sharp, frantic rapping rattled against the outer surface of the Reinforced Ether-Glass window.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Clara instantly sheathed her knife and dropped into a low crouch, her hand instinctively hovering near her bow. Brant gripped the haft of his greataxe, while Marcus reached for his sidearm.

"Hold your positions," Elias commanded, raising a single hand. "The barrier is active. Nothing can force its way inside."

Elias stood up and walked toward the front entrance. Through the one-way Ether-Glass, he looked out into the shadowy street.

Standing on the blood-stained pavement just outside the threshold was a young woman in her mid-twenties. Her dark blue medical scrubs were torn at the shoulder and heavily splattered with dark red blood. She wore a tactical utility belt loaded with glass vials, rolls of gauze, and surgical tools. Her dark hair was tied back in a messy ponytail, and her sharp brown eyes burned with a mixture of intense exhaustion and fierce determination.

Above her head, a bright green system tag flickered into view:

[HUMAN SURVIVOR (MARA VOSS) - CLASS: FIELD MEDIC (TIER 1)] [HEALTH: 62/100 - MANA: 15/80 - STATUS: PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION] [SKILL UNLOCKED: CELLULAR REGENERATION (LV. 1), HEMOSTASIS FIELD (LV. 1)]

Behind Mara stood two other survivors. One was a young man clutching a jagged spear, his arm wrapped in a soaked, blood-red tourniquet. The second was an unconscious woman being carried on a makeshift wooden litter, her chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged gasps. Blackish-purple veins bulged along her neck—the unmistakable sign of a Tier 1 monster's necrotic poison.

"Open up!" Mara shouted, her voice muffled through the glass, but carrying a desperate edge. "Please! We have critically wounded! We saw the light!"

Elias stepped up to the edge of the threshold, remaining inside the blue runic boundary. He looked at Mara calmly.

"This is Convenience Store #402, an active System Trading Post," Elias spoke through the transom vent. "I am Elias Mercer, the store proprietor. Who is asking for entry?"

"I'm Mara Voss! I was an emergency nurse at Ashford General before the sky broke!" she yelled back, wiping sweat and grime from her forehead. "We were ambushed two blocks north by Venom-Spite Crawlers! My patient is dying from toxic shock! Open the door!"

Mara lunged forward, reaching for the door handle.

ZZZT!

A soft ripple of golden kinetic force flared along the doorway, gently repelling her hand before she could touch the handle. She stumbled back a step, her eyes widening as she realized an invisible wall blocked her path.

[SYSTEM PROMPT: UNREGISTERED HUMANS ATTEMPTING ENTRY.] [PERMIT ACCESS?] This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

"Why isn't the door opening?!" Mara demanded, her eyes flashing with anger as she glared at Elias through the glass. "You have lights! You have shelter! There's a woman dying out here!"

A source-minded reader should know that this chapter was taken from the author's page without their approval.

"The door does not open automatically to unvetted guests," Elias said, his voice level and steady. "Entry to this Safe Zone requires a basic entry fee or a registered trade agreement."

"An entry fee?!" Mara stared at him in utter disbelief, her jaw dropping. "Are you out of your mind?! People are slaughtering each other in the streets, monsters are raining from the sky, and you're standing behind a glass door asking for money?!"

Inside the store, Mr. Henderson looked uncomfortably at the floor, while Marcus sighed softly. Brant simply folded his arms, watching the confrontation with keen interest.

"The apocalypse does not suspend the laws of supply and demand, Miss Voss," Elias replied without a trace of irritation. "Maintaining this barrier costs System Credits every single day. The medical supplies on my shelves cost capital to acquire and restock. If I open this door unconditionally for every wounded person in Sector 7, my business fails, and this safe haven ceases to exist."

"She has poison in her bloodstream!" Mara snapped, pointing furiously at the woman on the litter. "Every second you stand there negotiating like a sleazy landlord, her cellular degradation worsens! Where is your humanity?!"

"My humanity is what built this safe zone in the middle of a warzone," Elias retorted sharply, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with cold precision. "If I had no humanity, I would turn off the light, lock the door, and let the crawlers take you. But I am offering you a transaction. State your assets, Miss Voss. What do you have to trade?"

Mara opened her mouth to curse him, but the woman on the litter let out a wet, agonized groan, black blood trickling from the corner of her lips.

Mara closed her eyes, taking a sharp, trembling breath to force down her fury. She was a professional emergency nurse; she knew how to prioritize survival over pride. She reached down to her utility belt and unclipped a leather pouch, dumping its contents onto the hood of an abandoned shopping cart parked near the door.

"Three monster core fragments from Venom-Spite Crawlers," Mara said, her voice shaking with controlled rage. "Two rolls of sterile military-grade bandages I salvaged from an ambulance. And my professional services as a Tier 1 Field Medic. Evaluate that, shopkeeper."

Elias focused his perception on the items on the shopping cart, activating UNIVERSAL ACQUISITION and his SYSTEM LEDGER.

Floating evaluation tags immediately hovered above the offerings:

[ITEM: VENOM-SPITE ESSENCE SHARD (TIER 1) x3 - TOTAL VALUE: 4.80 SC] [ITEM: STERILE MILITARY BANDAGE x2 - TOTAL VALUE: 1.20 SC] [SERVICE OFFER: TIER 1 FIELD MEDIC (MARA VOSS) - SYSTEM APPRAISAL: HIGH VALUE MEDICAL ABILITY]

Elias calculated the totals in a fraction of a second.

Physical goods: 6.00 SC. But a certified Field Medic with active healing skills inside a Safe Zone... that is a high-yield service asset.

"Your physical items are worth six System Credits," Elias announced. "Entry for three survivors costs 1.50 SC—fifty cents per head for a twelve-hour shelter pass. That leaves you with 4.50 SC in store credit."

"And what about my patient's poison?!" Mara demanded.

"A Tier 1 Universal Antidote Elixir on my shelf costs 3.00 SC," Elias stated. "That leaves you with 1.50 SC in change, which is enough to purchase two bottles of purified water and a package of high-protein rations."

Mara blinked, stunned by the exactness of his breakdown. She had expected him to gouge her for everything she owned, or demand absurd extortion prices in her moment of weakness. Instead, he had offered her an itemized, mathematically fair transaction.

"You... you're actually selling a real antidote for three credits?" Mara asked, her anger wavering into surprise.

"I am a merchant, Miss Voss, not a bandit," Elias said calmly. "I do not overcharge, and I do not give handouts. Do we have a deal?"

"Transaction confirmed," Elias said.

[TRANSACTION #002 EXECUTED] [ACQUIRED: VENOM-SPITE ESSENCE SHARD x3, STERILE BANDAGE x2] [DEDUCTED: 3x SAFE ZONE ENTRY PASS (1.50 SC), 1x UNIVERSAL ANTIDOTE ELIXIR (3.00 SC)] [ADDED TO HOST LEDGER: +1.50 SC NET PROFIT MARGIN] [CURRENT BALANCE: 24.60 SC]

The golden boundary along the doorway parted with a soft chiming sound.

"Access granted," Elias declared. "Welcome to Convenience Store #402."

Mara didn't hesitate. She and the young spearman picked up the litter and rushed through the doorway, carrying the poisoned woman into the bright, warm interior of the store. As soon as they crossed the threshold, the blue runes sealed behind them, shutting out the cold night air.

Elias walked over to the pharmacy display case, retrieved a small glass vial containing a shimmering green liquid—the Universal Antidote Elixir—and handed it directly to Mara.

Mara snatched the vial, popped the cork, and carefully administered the liquid into the unconscious woman's mouth.

Within seconds, a faint emerald glow spread beneath the woman's skin. The blackish-purple veins along her neck began to recede, her harsh breathing smoothed out, and the color returned to her pale cheeks.

[PATIENT STATUS UPDATED: TOXICITY NEUTRALIZED - RECOVERY IN PROGRESS]

Mara let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, slumping back against the tile floor. She wiped her forehead with the back of her sleeve, looking around the store in awe. She saw the lit aisles, the stocked shelves, the resting survivors, and Officer Marcus Reed sitting comfortably in the corner.

"It really is a safe zone," Mara whispered softly, her sharp eyes turning back to Elias. "How is this even possible?"

"Commercial property rights recognized by the System," Elias replied smoothly, handing her two bottles of spring water and a package of dry rations from her remaining store credit. "Your change, Miss Voss."

Mara took the water, staring at Elias with a complex mix of respect and lingering wariness.

"You're a bizarre man, Elias Mercer," Mara said, taking a long drink of water. "I thought you were a monster when I was outside. But you gave me exact value for my trade."

"Extortion ruins customer retention," Elias said pragmatically. "A merchant who squeezes his buyers dry gets rich once and dies when his customers turn on him. A merchant who offers fair trade builds an empire."

Marcus laughed out loud from the corner. "Told you, doc. He's not evil. Just horribly efficient."

Mara shook her head, a faint, exhausted smile touching her lips for the first time. "Well, 'horribly efficient' just saved my friend's life. But don't think I'm going to let you put a price tag on everything in this city without questioning you."

"Question all you like, Miss Voss," Elias said, returning to his counter. "As long as you pay your bill, your opinions are entirely free."

Elias opened his SYSTEM LEDGER.

His balance was up to 24.60 SC, his inventory now included three valuable Venom-Spite Essence Shards capable of being crafted into poison-resistant gear, and he had secured the loyalty of a Tier 1 Field Medic whose skills would make his store the undisputed medical hub of Sector 7.

Outside, the dark sky over Ashford continued to crackle with dimensional energy. But inside Convenience Store #402, the cash register was open, the lights were bright, and the merchant was just getting started.
