Campus on Saturday morning looked cheaper than it had the night before. The string lights were gone, the bartender was gone, and the quad was just wet pavement and a few students pretending they had not been at the same party.
Ethan walked it like he belonged there. He did not. Before the weekend died he needed two things: money that was not Veronica’s, and Madison Blake in a place with no audience.
The student-work board outside the union was half dead. Tutoring flyers. Library hours. A lost-and-found shift that paid nothing worth the walk. Then a yellow slip, taped over last week’s listings, stopped him.
Alumni Weekend Staff — East Quad / Donor Mixer
Same-day hire. Cash at close. Report to Events by 11.
Alumni weekend. The kind of thing Ryan’s father wrote checks for. The kind of thing that put Ethan in a black shirt at the edge of other people’s money. He took a picture of the slip and went inside.
The events office smelled like coffee and printer heat. A woman in her thirties looked up from a stack of name badges, already tired of the day.
"If you’re here for the mixer, I need a name and a shirt size. If you’re here to complain about last night’s noise, I don’t care."
"Ethan Sterling. I can work the mixer. I need the same-day hire if it’s still open."
She looked him over the way people did when they were deciding whether he would be useful or in the way. Wrinkled shirt. Combed hair. Not impressive. Not helpless either.
"Have you done events before, or are you walking in cold? I don’t have time to train somebody who is going to freeze the first time a donor asks for the bar."
"I can carry trays and keep my mouth shut. That’s the part I assumed mattered."
"That’s most of the job." She slid a form across the desk. "Black shirt if you have one. If you don’t, we have extras that will make you look like you borrowed them. Call time is four. You stay through cleanup. Cash is sixty. You steal a bottle, I put your name on a list nobody wants to be on."
Sixty was not independence. It was a start that did not come from Veronica’s purse.
"I’ll be there at four. I have a shirt."
He signed. She waved him off. That was the whole conversation. No speech. No miracle. Just work.
Outside, the System flickered at the edge of his vision and refused to complete. One half of the quest was not enough. Madison would have to be the other half.
He found her where people like Madison went when they wanted to be seen recovering from a night: the courtyard table near the coffee window, sunglasses on, phone face-down, Chloe nowhere in sight. He did not sit down like he had a right to the chair. He stopped at the edge of the table and waited until she had to look at him.
"If this is about last night, I don’t have anything to say. Ryan was being Ryan. I wasn’t going to stand there and make it worse for myself just because he decided you were the joke."
"I’m not here to ask you to apologize for him. I wanted two minutes without a crowd, and this was the first place I could find you that wasn’t last night."
Madison took her sunglasses off. In daylight she looked less like a prize and more like someone who had slept badly and still expected the room to arrange itself around her.
"You walked out. That was the smart part. Coming back this morning is the part I don’t understand. Most people would have let it die."
"If I don’t say something now, last night becomes the only version of me you have. I don’t need you to like me. I need you to remember I didn’t crawl just because he wanted an audience."
She studied him, then glanced past his shoulder to see who might be watching. The courtyard was thin. A couple of runners. A guy with a hangover and a smoothie. No Ryan.
"Fine. You can have two minutes, but I am not doing this like we are sitting down for coffee. Talk, and then I have to go."
"I know how that looked. I live in Veronica Cole’s house. She pays what I can’t. People are going to keep using that because it’s easy, and I am not asking you to pretend it isn’t true."
Madison’s mouth tightened. "Then I need you to tell me what you actually want from me, because if this is a speech about fairness, I already heard a worse version of it last night."
"When you walk away next time, do it because you want to. Not because Ryan handed you the line and the room waited to see if you would use it."
That landed. He saw it. She did not like being told she had been used as a prop.
"You think I don’t know he does that? He talks like that to make himself taller. I left because I wasn’t going to get pulled into a scene with you in the middle of it, and that is not the same thing as agreeing with him."
"It looked the same from where I was standing. That is the part I am not going to pretend I imagined."
"That’s because you were the one he was standing on." She exhaled and sat back. "You’re not as invisible as you think you are. You just pick the worst possible moments to become visible, and then you act surprised when people use it."
Ethan almost smiled. "Then I’ll pick better ones. That is the only part of last night I am willing to keep."
Madison looked at him a second longer, like she was trying to decide whether this was sad or interesting. "If that is all, I have a call in ten minutes, and I don’t want to be seen having a rehabilitation conversation in the courtyard. Don’t make last night a personality, Ethan. It doesn’t suit you."
She left without offering him anything warmer than that. Not laughing. Not cruel. Just finished, and private enough that the quest could count it.
The air in front of him thinned, then sharpened.

[Reward: 300 CP]
[Bonus Condition Met: Cole household does not have the full story.]
[Bonus: +100 CP]

Ethan stopped walking and read it twice. Four hundred. Clean. Exactly what the quest had promised.
Then another window slid over the first, slower, like it had been waiting for him to finish counting.
[Additional Reward Granted]
[Skill Acquired: Wicked Fingers I]
He frowned at the extra screen. That had not been listed. Points were listed. The bonus was listed. A skill was not.
[Wicked Fingers I]
Rank: Common
Effect: Your hands find the nerve she did not know she was guarding. Pleasure is precise, not loud. No compulsion.
Ethan read the effect line twice. Hands. Nerve. Pleasure.
He should have been more careful about it. He should have wondered what else the System could hide. Instead he felt the first clean lift in his chest since Ryan opened his mouth last night, and he did not bother dressing that up as caution.
He looked at his right hand. Same knuckles. Same cheap watch tan. Nothing that looked like a weapon. He dragged his thumb across his own wrist just to see, and the sensation that answered was too exact, too deep for a thumb on his own skin. It faded fast. The smile that followed it was small and ugly.
"That wasn’t on the screen," he said under his breath. "You just handed me that."
The text did not correct itself. Good. Hidden extras meant the System could be farmed.
A shop window unfolded underneath, patient.

[Wanted Scent I — 200 CP]

[Dirty Voice I — 250 CP]

[Recovery I — 150 CP]

[Perfect Physique I — 350 CP]

He left Physique alone. A new face in Veronica’s kitchen was a good way to start questions, and he wanted those questions later, when he could use them.
Echo Touch sat under Wicked Fingers like the second half of a sentence. Find the spot. Leave it on her after he walked away. That was not romance. That was a hook. He selected it without hesitating long enough to look decent.
[Purchase Confirmed: Echo Touch I]
Effect: Contact repeats once after you let go. She feels you when you are already gone.
[CP Remaining: 150]
The second skill settled in behind the first. No pain. No light. Just the quiet understanding that if he put his hand on someone and took it away, the feeling would come back for them once.
Ethan flexed his fingers and laughed under his breath.
Madison thought she had given him two minutes out of pity. She had given him a completed quest and a private read on her pride. Next time he touched her, it would not be a handshake he forgot.
The mixer was at four. Trays. Donors. Women in dresses who would take a glass from his hand and not look at him twice. They would look. Not because he was suddenly worth looking at, but because he could make a second of contact last longer than it should, and most people got sloppy when their body got ahead of their mouth.
Ryan had used a crowd. Ethan did not need one.
He stood in the courtyard with sixty dollars of work waiting, two skills the original quest screen had not bothered to mention, and the first real sense that last night had been useful. His hands still looked like the hands of someone Ryan could embarrass in front of a pool.
That was fine.
People were easier to take when they thought they already knew what you were.
