The extra shirt from Events made him look exactly like what he was. Staff. Borrowed black. A name sticker that would peel before the night was over.
East quad had been dressed again, only this time the money had names attached to it. White linens. A bar that did not card anyone over thirty. Alumni in jackets that cost more than Ethan’s semester. Students who had been invited to smile and remember who paid for the new wing.
Ethan took a tray and kept to the edge of the crowd the way he had been told.
Carry. Smile if someone looked at him. Do not talk unless he was asked a question that had a short answer.
He could do that. He had been doing a version of it for years.

[Echo Touch I — Ready]
The windows sat at the corner of his vision like they were bored. He ignored them until his hands were full and there was no good way to test anything without looking like an idiot.
Then a woman reached for a glass before he had fully stopped.
She was older than Madison by a decade at least. Dark dress. Wedding ring she kept twisting when she talked. She thanked him without looking at his face, fingers brushing his as she took the champagne.
Wicked Fingers found her first.
It was not loud. It was exact. The contact lasted less than a second and still landed deeper than a passing touch had any right to. He felt the skill catch the way a lock caught, small and clean, and then her hand was gone.
He kept walking.
Two steps later he knew Echo Touch had followed her.
He did not have to watch. He heard the little break in her conversation, the pause that did not belong there. When he glanced back, she was looking at her own fingers like the glass had done something. Then she looked for him.
Ethan was already at the next cluster of guests, tray steady, face empty.
The smile in his chest was not empty.

Three hundred. He had spent two-fifty an hour ago and the System had already started paying him back for using what he bought. That was the part he liked. Not the warmth in her hand. The return.
"Sterling."
Ryan’s voice carried even when he was trying to sound casual. He had a glass he had not earned and a girl from last night still near his shoulder, and his father was somewhere in the thicker part of the crowd doing the real talking.
Ethan turned with the tray between them. "You want something from the bar, or are you just visiting the help?"
Ryan looked at the sticker on Ethan’s shirt and let the laugh sit in his mouth. "I knew you were going to do something sad after last night. I just didn’t think it would be this literal. Does Veronica know you’re passing drinks at her people’s party, or is this another thing you are hoping nobody mentions at breakfast?"
"She knows I have work. The rest of it isn’t your business."
"Everything about you is somebody’s business. That’s the problem." Ryan leaned in just enough to keep it private. "Madison’s here, by the way. Student liaison. If you were planning on another courtyard speech, I would pick a different night. She already used up her charity."
Ethan did not look for her immediately. That was what Ryan wanted.
"If you need a drink, take one. If you don’t, you’re in the way of the tray."
Ryan took a glass anyway, slow, like the taking was the point. His fingers came close to Ethan’s and missed. Ethan did not give him the satisfaction of flinching or reaching.
"Enjoy the shift," Ryan said. "Try not to drop anything in front of the people who actually pay to be here."
He went back to his cluster. The girl with him glanced at Ethan, then away, already bored.
Ethan moved.
Madison was near the donor table with a folder and a smile that belonged to the school, not to last night. She saw him. The recognition was quick and unhappy, then she covered it because there were alumni within five feet of her.
He did not walk straight to her. He let a full loop of the patio happen first. When he came back around, she had stepped off the table far enough that a conversation would not be public.
"Please tell me this is a joke," she said, low. "You came to find me this morning so I would not think you were pathetic, and now you are wearing a sticker and serving champagne to Ryan’s father."
"I needed the money. That is the whole reason I am here. It does not have to become another story you tell people."
Madison looked at the tray, then at his face. "You understand how this looks. Last night he called you the help. Tonight you showed up and proved him right in front of the same zip code."
"He called me a charity case. This is the opposite of that. I am getting paid, and none of it came out of Veronica’s account."
She held his eyes for a second longer than she needed to. "You have an answer for everything this morning. I don’t know if that makes you impressive or exhausting."
"It makes me employed until ten."
That almost pulled a real expression out of her. She shut it down before it could become kindness.
"Don’t talk to me like we are friends in front of these people. I have to smile at men who donate buildings. You have to refill their glasses. Those are different jobs."
"I wasn’t going to."
He adjusted the tray and, because the opening was there and because he wanted to know if the courtyard had been a fluke, he let the edge of his fingers touch the back of her hand when he passed.
Wicked Fingers caught the same way it had with the woman in the dress. Precise. Quiet. A nerve she had not been guarding because she thought this was just a warning conversation.
Madison’s sentence died in her mouth.
Ethan was already stepping past her.
Echo Touch hit two seconds later. He saw it in the way her other hand tightened on the folder, in the small look she gave her own skin, as if the air over it had changed.
She did not call after him. She would not, not here.
That was fine. He did not need her to.

He filed the window away and kept working.
The night stayed useful. He learned who ignored staff and who actually said thank you. He learned Ryan’s father laughed with his whole mouth and did not know Ethan’s name. He learned Madison watched him twice more and pretended she was watching the crowd.
Near eight, Veronica walked in.
She was not dressed like campus. She was dressed like the reason half these people wanted a conversation. Dark coat. Clean lines. The kind of entrance that made the patio reorganize itself without anyone admitting they had done it.
Ethan felt it before she saw him. Then she did.
Her eyes went to the sticker on his shirt, then to the tray, then back to his face. The look was not embarrassment. It was assessment. Strict. Unhappy in a way that still made room for him.
She crossed to him instead of pretending she had not noticed.
"You did not tell me you were working this," she said, quiet enough that it stayed between them. "I would have rather heard it from you than find you with a tray in your hands in front of people I know."
"It was same-day hire. I didn’t think it needed a meeting."
"Everything that puts you in a room like this needs a meeting." She glanced at the tray and then past it, already measuring who had seen him. "If you needed money, you ask me. You do not sign up to serve drinks to men who will use it as a story later."
"I didn’t ask you because I didn’t want it to come from you. That was the point."
Veronica’s mouth tightened. For a second something else moved under the rule, something softer, and then she put it away before he could be sure he had seen it.
"We will talk at home. Not here. Do the job you signed up for, and do not let Ryan Mitchell decide what this looks like."
"I wasn’t planning on it."
She held his eyes one last time, then let herself be pulled into a conversation with a man who said her name like it opened doors.
Ethan watched her go and felt the skills sitting in his hands like a secret she did not have.
He could have touched her. A glass. An elbow. A second of contact that would have followed her into that conversation.
He did not.
Not because he was decent. Because the first time he used it on Veronica, he wanted her in a room with no alumni and no tray and no reason for her to write it off as the job.

Ethan almost laughed.
"I wasn’t going to," he murmured, and the window faded.
He finished the shift. He took the sixty in cash at close and folded it into his pocket like it mattered more than it did. Madison was gone by then. Ryan had left with the people who never stayed for cleanup.
Veronica’s car was still in the side lot when he came down the service path.
She did not offer him a ride until he was close enough that refusing would look like a scene.
"Get in," she said. "You are not walking home in that shirt."
Ethan got in.
He kept his hands to himself the whole way back, and the whole way back he thought about how easy it would have been not to.
