Veronica made him sit in the kitchen like the mixer had followed him home and taken a chair.
Alexandra was gone. Isabella was upstairs with music on, loud enough to pretend she was not listening. The Sunday light made the room look calm. It was not.
Veronica stood on the other side of the island with her coffee and the face she used when a meeting had already started without her permission.
"I am going to ask you this once, and I want an answer that is not a performance," she said. "Why did I have to find you with a tray in your hands in front of people I work with?"
"Because I took the hire the same day and I didn’t think it needed a briefing. I needed money that did not come from you. That is the version I am sticking to."
"I have never made you beg me for money. I have asked you to tell me when you need it so I do not find out in a room full of donors that you are working their party."
Ethan kept his hands on the counter. After Claire, they still felt like they belonged to a different day. "If I ask, it stays yours. If I earn it, it is mine. I know that sounds ungrateful. I am not trying to be. I am trying not to live here like a problem you keep solving."
Veronica looked at him for a long time. The strictness held. Under it, something tired moved and did not get permission to speak.
"You are not a problem I am solving. You are a person in my house, and I will not have this city talk about you like I put you on display." She set the cup down. "If you take another shift, you tell me first. That is not optional. I will not chase you across campus to find out what you signed up for."
"I’ll tell you."
"Good." She started to leave, then stopped. "Sophia asked who you were after she walked away. I told her the truth. Do not make me regret that by turning one conversation into an excuse to bother her."
"I wasn’t going to call her."
Veronica’s eyes stayed on him long enough to make the lie he had not told feel visible. Then she went down the hall and left the kitchen to him.

Ethan read it once and shut it.
He had not touched her. The System was still keeping score.
Isabella came down five minutes later in socks, stole the rest of his toast, and sat on the counter like the house belonged to her.
"Mom’s using her boardroom voice. That means you did something, and it also means Alexandra already texted me asking if I knew what it was."
"I worked a mixer. That is the entire scandal."
Isabella took a bite and studied him over it. "You worked a mixer after Ryan dragged you in front of Madison. Then you disappeared into a parking lot this morning and came home looking like you got away with something. I am not as dumb as you need me to be today."
"I went back for the last of alumni weekend. There were people on the terrace. That is all you are getting."
"Was Madison one of them?"
"She was there last night. I don’t know about this morning."
Isabella’s mouth pulled to the side. It was almost a smile. It was also a warning. "If you are going to start doing whatever this is, do not do it in a way that blows back on Mom. She actually cares what those people say. I care that you look like you are about to be stupid on purpose."
"I heard you."
"No you didn’t. You filed me." She hopped down and flicked his ear anyway. "I still like you. That is the only reason I am not following you around campus like a parole officer."
She left him with the toast crust and the feeling that the house was getting harder to lie to.

The last line should have bothered him more than it did.
His phone buzzed on the counter.
Madison.
I need to talk to you and I am not doing it in a courtyard. Library stacks, twenty minutes. If you make this a speech I am leaving.
Ethan looked at the message longer than he needed to.
She was angry. She was also the one who had reached out. That was the opening. Not a conquest. A door she had put her own hand on.

He bought Low Heat.
A hundred points. Close range appetite. Not loyalty. The kind of thing that would make a library conversation harder for her and easier for him.

He left Stamina sitting there. He wanted it. He also wanted to see Madison first and know whether he was buying it for a night or for a maybe.
The library was half dead. Sunday dead. A few students who believed suffering at a desk counted as character.
Madison was in the third-floor stacks with her bag on the floor and her arms folded like she had been rehearsing.
"You touched my hand last night and then you walked away like you had proven a point," she said. "I have been trying to write that off since I got home. I cannot write it off. So you are going to tell me what that was, and you are not going to smile when you do it."
Ethan stopped close enough for Low Heat to matter and not close enough for her to call it a reach.
He felt it go out of him, low and even. The air between them changed. Madison noticed. He saw the notice run through her shoulders before she decided to be angry about that too.
"It was my hand on your hand. If you want me to apologize for it, I can. I don’t think that is why you asked me here."
"Don’t do that. Don’t make this sound reasonable." She glanced down the aisle, then back. "I told you not to talk to me like we were friends in front of those people. You did it anyway. Then you touched me and I felt it after you were already gone. I am not crazy, and I am not going to stand here and let you pretend I imagined that."
"You didn’t imagine it."
The honesty landed harder than a lie would have. Madison stared at him like he had taken a shortcut she had not given him.
"Then what are you?"
"Someone who is tired of being the story Ryan tells. That is as much as you get in a library."
Low Heat kept working while they talked. It did not drop her to her knees. It made her aware of his mouth. Of the space between his chest and hers. Of the fact that she had chosen a dead aisle on purpose.
Madison swallowed and hated that he could see it.
"I should not have texted you."
"You did."
"That is not permission."
"I didn’t say it was."
She looked at his hands. Then she looked away like the looking had already cost her.
"Chloe is having people at her place tonight. Not a party. Ten people, maybe. If you show up looking like last night’s staff, I will walk out. If Ryan starts, I am not saving you again."
"Are you asking me to come?"
Madison’s jaw tightened. "I am telling you I will be there. What you do with that is your problem. If you touch me like that in front of people, I will make it a problem for you."
She picked up her bag and left him in the stacks with the heat still sitting in the aisle.

Ethan stood there until her footsteps disappeared.
He could go home and let her sit with it. That would work. It might even work better.
He was not going to do that.
Claire had been proof. Madison would be a name he could use on campus. Sophia was the one who already looked at him like a man who might be useful.
He bought Iron Stamina in the stairwell because pretending he might not need it was a waste of a good lie.

Ethan put the phone in his pocket and walked out of the library already deciding what he was going to wear.
Not the borrowed black. Not the wrinkled shirt from the party.
Something that made her remember the courtyard and forget the tray.
