Sunday morning in the Cole house was quieter than Saturday, which only made Veronica harder to read.

She did not bring up the tray at breakfast. She did not bring up the sixty dollars in his pocket either. She poured coffee, told Isabella not to start, and looked at Ethan like the conversation had been postponed rather than cancelled.

Alexandra asked if he wanted a ride to campus. He said he would walk. Isabella told him he looked less tragic than yesterday and then ruined it by asking if Madison had seen the sticker.Full novel: The Milf Conqueror — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He left before the kitchen could turn into another interrogation.

Alumni weekend was dying in public. Suitcases. Last brunch on the terrace off the union. Name badges hanging off people who had already decided Westhaven was charming and too small.

Ethan went because the new quest was still open.

[Quest Active: Be Seen]

[Objective: Leave a lasting impression on someone with status before the weekend ends.]

[Reward: 250 CP]

[Optional: Do it without using Veronica Cole as the shield.]

He did not have a plan that looked decent. He had two skills and a terrace full of people who had ignored him twelve hours ago.

He got six steps onto the stone before the woman from the tray found him.

Dark dress swapped for a cream blouse and sunglasses. Wedding ring still turning on her finger. She looked at him like she had spent the night trying to decide whether she had imagined it.

"You’re the one with the champagne," she said. "I asked at the events table. They said the Saturday staff were not supposed to be here this morning, which I took as a suggestion and ignored."

Ethan stopped. "I was heading through. I didn’t think anyone would be looking for the help."

"I wasn’t looking for the help." She glanced past him, then back, and lowered her voice without stepping closer yet. "I have been to a lot of these. Nobody’s hand feels like that. I went back to my room and told myself it was the second glass. It was not the second glass."

He could have played stupid. It would have been safer. It also would have wasted her.

"What did it feel like?"

Her mouth tightened, almost a smile, almost annoyed. "Like you knew exactly where to put it, and then like you were still there after you walked away. If you tell me that was an accident, I am going to be disappointed in both of us."

Ethan read the window without letting his face change.

Claire Hoffman. A name. A number. A married woman on a terrace who had come looking for his hands.

He was not a good person for the way that landed. He felt the lift anyway.

"It wasn’t an accident," he said. "If you wanted it to be, you would not have asked for me at the events table."

Claire looked at him for a long second, the kind of look that measured risk against appetite. "My husband is in a farewell meeting that he will call important. I have twenty minutes and a car in the north lot that nobody is using. If you say something pretty, I am leaving. If you waste it, I am leaving."

"Then we should walk."

They did.

The north lot sat behind a service hedge and a row of alumni rentals that had already been returned. Claire unlocked a dark SUV, got in first, and watched him like she might still change her mind until the door shut and the city noise dropped away.

"If you talk about last night like it made us anything, I will put you out of this car," she said. "I want to know if I made that up. That is the entire conversation."

Ethan turned in the seat. "Give me your hand."

She hesitated, then put it in his.

Wicked Fingers did not need a search this time. He already knew the path. His thumb found the inside of her wrist, then the soft place at the base of her palm, and her breath left her like she had been waiting for it and still was not ready.

"That," she whispered. "That is what I meant."

He let go.

Echo Touch came back two seconds later. Claire’s knees pulled together. She stared at the empty air over her skin and then at his mouth.

"If you stop at my hand I am going to feel stupid for walking out here."

"I wasn’t going to stop at your hand."

He leaned across the console and kissed her because it was faster than another negotiation. She made a sound into it that was not polite. When his fingers slid under the hem of her blouse, she grabbed his wrist and then pulled it higher instead of pushing it away.

Her bra was thin. The skill made that irrelevant. He found the underside of her breast, then the nipple, and the sensation went through her sharper than the touch itself. Claire broke the kiss and dropped her head back against the seat.

"Don’t you dare do that and then act like you don’t know what you’re doing."

"I know what I’m doing."

He said it without dressing it up. He wanted her to hear that.

His hand went down. She lifted her hips for him before the sentence she had been building could become a protest. The skirt made it easy. The fact that she was already wet made it easier. Wicked Fingers found her through the fabric first, then under it, and Claire’s whole body tried to close around the contact.

"Oh my god. Okay. Okay, just—"

He did not rush it enough to make it sloppy. He also did not treat it like something precious. Two fingers, precise, the kind of pressure that made her forget the parking lot. When she started chasing his hand, he gave her the rhythm she was asking for and let Echo Touch double the last stroke after he paused.

Claire came with her forehead against his shoulder and her nails in his forearm, a broken sound she tried to swallow and could not. It ran through her twice, the second time after he had already gone still, and she laughed once like she was angry at her own body.

"That is not normal," she said against his shirt. "You understand that is not normal."

Ethan watched her shake through the end of it and felt the System open like it had been waiting for the exact second.

He kept his hand on her thigh until she pushed it away, not unkind, just done with being touched.

Claire fixed her skirt with fingers that were not quite steady. "If you ever repeat this to anyone at that school, I will deny it and I will make it expensive. This was a curiosity. It stays a curiosity."

"I wasn’t going to put it on a flyer."

She looked at him again, really looked, as if the staff sticker from last night and the boy in her passenger seat were refusing to be the same person.

"How old are you?"

"Nineteen."

Claire shut her eyes and breathed out. "Of course you are." She started the car anyway. "Get out before I remember I have a husband and a flight. And if I see you on that terrace, you do not know me."

He got out.

The lot felt too bright. His hands felt like they belonged to someone who had just been handed proof.

Eleven hundred points. A married woman who had walked him to a car so he could finish what a passing touch had started. Madison could keep her courtyard pride. This was the book he was actually writing.

He was halfway back to the terrace when Veronica’s voice caught him from the brunch side of the hedge.

"Ethan."

He turned. She was not alone.

The woman next to her was a few years younger than Veronica and somehow colder for it. Blonde pulled back. Coat that did not belong at a student brunch. She looked at Ethan the way people looked at a detail they had not asked for.

"This is my friend’s son," Veronica said, and the word friend was doing work she did not examine. "Ethan, this is Sophia Bennett. She flew in for the weekend and she is leaving before she has to eat another plate of campus fruit."

Sophia’s gaze flicked over his face, his clothes, the fact that he had come out of a parking lot instead of the terrace doors.

"You’re the one who was working the mixer," she said. Not unkind. Not impressed. "Veronica mentioned it this morning like she still hadn’t decided whether she was angry."

"I needed the money."

"Most people your age just ask." Sophia adjusted her bag. "That is not a criticism. It is an observation. People who hate asking usually have a reason, and they are not always honest about it."

Veronica’s look warned him not to turn this into a performance.

Ethan held Sophia’s eyes anyway. "Then I won’t pretend it was character. I didn’t want it coming from her."

Something small changed in Sophia’s face. Not warmth. Attention.

Claire Hoffman had given him the body of the morning.

Sophia Bennett, standing next to Veronica with a boarding time in her head, felt like the actual board.

"I have a car coming," Sophia said. "Veronica, I’ll call you when I land. Ethan." She paused on his name like she was tagging it. "If you ever decide you want work that is not a tray, you should learn how to say that in a room that is not a parking lot."

She walked off toward the circle drive.

Veronica watched her go, then looked at Ethan too long.

"You were gone for twenty minutes," she said. "I am going to assume you were getting air, and you are going to let me assume that."

"That’s all it was."

Veronica did not believe him. She also did not ask in public.

"Come home when you are done standing here," she said. "We are still going to talk about last night."

She left him on the terrace with Claire’s shake still in his hands and Sophia’s name still on the screen.

Ethan flexed his fingers once and smiled at the empty air.

He could get used to a System that paid him for finishing.
