Qing Wu was taken aback, then furrowed her brows slightly. “Engagement? Doesn’t the family have other daughters?”
“Miss Shaojia said she isn’t a daughter of the Shen family and doesn’t deserve to hold the eldest daughter’s engagement. The Elder has decreed—what’s yours, no one can take away!”
Old Zhou happily answered a phone call, spoke to the other party with utmost respect for a few moments, then hung up and looked at Qing Wu.
“Eldest Miss, the Elder would like you to visit him before you return home. You know his health isn’t good, and he’s been thinking of you for many years…”
Qing Wu had no objection and nodded. “Alright, but the gift I prepared for Grandfather hasn’t arrived yet. Wouldn’t it be inappropriate to go empty-handed?”
Old Zhou quickly waved his hand. “Your willingness to go is already a good thing. The Elder doesn’t care about such things.”
Elder Shen had lived to such an age—what fine things hadn’t he seen?
What Old Zhou was more worried about was whether Qing Wu would agree to go at all.
The fact that she’d thought ahead to prepare a gift for the Elder was already quite remarkable.
Given how the Lin family—poor as they were—lived in such a small villa, Old Zhou didn’t think Qing Wu could produce anything particularly impressive as a gift.
But the way Qing Wu spoke—measured in her advance and retreat, polite and deferential, yet neither humble nor overbearing—greatly improved Old Zhou’s impression of her.
This bearing—truly worthy of our eldest miss!
“Very well, I’ll take you there right away.”
Half an hour later, the helicopter transformed back into an ordinary sedan, smoothly pulling into Qiaoxi Hospital in the capital.
Old Zhou handed Qing Wu a piece of paper with the room number written on it.
“Eldest Miss, the Elder doesn’t like too many people around. I’ll go wash the car—please go up on your own. I’ll wait for you here!”
Elder Shen had a bad temper, and after two years of illness, he’d become somewhat eccentric. Old Zhou looked at Qing Wu with a hint of apology.
Qing Wu took the paper and nodded lightly. “Alright.”
Just as she reached the third floor, a few unruly kids in the corridor knocked over the nurses’ medication cart, and the small trolley loaded with medical supplies came barreling straight toward Qing Wu!
“Watch out!”
The nurses cried out in alarm.
“Oh no, that cart has the medication for Bed Three—if it spills, it’s over…”
Qing Wu was about to dodge when she overheard the nurses’ conversation.
Bed Three?
Wasn’t that Elder Shen’s bed number?
The trolley, now out of control, accelerated toward Qing Wu.
In the chaos, Qing Wu shifted her foot, gently nudging the trolley with her knee, and steadily brought it under control.
Not a single drop of medication spilled from the cart!
The nurses were stunned!
That was some impressive skill!
“Miss, are you alright?”
Qing Wu shook her head and was about to return the trolley to the nurses when, just as she steadied herself, a heavyset middle-aged woman lunged at her.
The woman reached out to grab Qing Wu’s arm, but Qing Wu dodged at a speed imperceptible to the naked eye.
The woman missed her grab, and while Qing Wu wasn’t paying attention, seized her clothing, shouting at a volume that every patient on the floor could hear.
“Miss, come judge for us! Qiaoxi Hospital killed someone—how are we supposed to go on living!”
“Qiaoxi Hospital killed my son and won’t take responsibility! Miss, you be the judge!”
The woman began wailing at the top of her lungs.
“Qiaoxi Hospital, compensate me for my son! Give me back my son’s life!”
“Quack doctors killed a man—your hospital must pay with my son’s life!”
Patients were coming out of every ward door to watch the commotion.
The medical staff were already used to this kind of scene. A nurse hurried over, trying to pull Qing Wu away.
The middle-aged woman shoved the nurse to the ground with one hand, wailing, “Heavens above!! Why is my son’s life so miserable?!”
The nurse, thoroughly annoyed, frowned and said, “Family member of the patient, you signed the surgical agreement before the operation. The patient died from wound infection caused by improper post-operative care. What does that have to do with our hospital?”
The woman’s voice grew even louder, so piercing that Qing Wu’s eardrums rang.
“Nothing to do with it? You say nothing to do with it?! My son took his last breath in your hospital! The quack doctors took my son’s life, and they should pay with their lives!”
The woman always spoke at full volume, her voice booming with tremendous energy, and her relentless tirade left the medical staff groaning in frustration.
After shouting, she pulled out a prescription, plopped herself down on the ground, and continued wailing.
“Why won’t any of you believe me? My son appeared in my dream and told me it was all your hospital’s fault!”
The nurse was disgusted but couldn’t outright throw her out.
“Stop spouting nonsense here. Your son appearing in your dream is evidence? Superstitious rubbish! Security, get her out of here!”
The woman lay flat on the ground, thrashing and rolling around, clearly determined not to leave until the hospital gave her some kind of answer.
A cold, clear voice sounded from above the woman’s head.
“Is this your son’s medication? There’s a problem with this prescription.”
The woman’s wailing stopped abruptly!
She looked up and saw Qing Wu calmly examining the prescription in her hand, her cool gaze like still water that nonetheless stirred ripples.
The woman became wildly excited, her voice even louder: “I knew someone would be able to see it! Finally, someone who’ll stand up for me! It was those quack doctors at Qiaoxi Hospital who took my son’s life!”
This woman came by every few days, and the entire floor’s medical staff were at their wit’s end, exhausted by this malicious hospital disturbance.
The doctors looked at Qing Wu with hostility.
“Little girl, you can’t just say things carelessly. What makes you think our hospital’s prescription has a problem?”
“How old are you to be talking like this? Can you even read this prescription? Do you know what the patient’s symptoms were?”
Qing Wu glanced at her, her gaze calm.
“Licorice inhibits the synthesis and release of prostaglandins, suppresses the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and raises the patient’s blood pressure. That’s basic knowledge. The dosage of licorice tablets in this prescription is excessive, which caused the patient’s blood pressure to spike and led to death.”
Meeting her gaze, the nurse felt a chill run down her spine.
“You’re just a high school student, and you’re talking to me about basic knowledge? This prescription was written by a team of experts!”
This little brat thought she knew medicine just because she’d read a few books?
If she didn’t teach her a lesson, the girl wouldn’t know the meaning of respect!
An aged voice rang out.
“Enough. What’s all the commotion about?”
The doctors and nurses immediately fell silent and turned to look respectfully at the elderly man standing at the door of the ward.
He wore a hospital gown and held a dragon-headed cane, exuding an imposing air without even trying.
The nurse’s eyes darted around.
“Old Chief, it’s the family member of the patient from Room 8 causing trouble again. This little girl insists that our hospital’s medication is at fault!”
“The medication for Room 8 was personally decided by Professor Chen Jianhong from Capital Medical University. It’s extremely authoritative.”
“She might be an enemy agent who snuck in. I suggest we have security take her away!”
The old man let out a cold snort, majestic and commanding.
“If enemy agents can sneak in, does your hospital’s security want to be shut down?”
The medical staff moved swiftly, trying to grab Qing Wu’s arm and drag her out.
Qing Wu sidestepped with a smooth shift, using just a slight push from her calf to slip away—the nurse didn’t even brush her clothes.
The older woman shielded Qing Wu behind her with one arm.
“Who dares? Touch this girl, and I’ll die right in front of you!”
The medical staff’s heads were spinning—a patient’s family member causing a scene, plus a reckless girl spouting nonsense, and the situation was spiraling into chaos.
“Get them out of here, now!”
“Coming here to talk nonsense—there’s definitely something wrong with her!”
Qing Wu: “…”
She’d just casually pointed out that this medication had a basic error, so why were these people acting like they’d gone mad?
Qing Wu’s gaze was calm. “Is Chen Jianhong really that impressive? He can make basic errors too.”
She remembered that name—last month, he’d emailed her inviting her to join his team, and she’d declined because she saw no room for growth there.
Chen Jianhong had seen her several SCI papers published in the top medical journal NEJM and had been frantically trying to contact her since.
Those papers were just things she’d casually written in her spare time.
Her one sentence successfully enraged all the doctors around her!
Professor Chen Jianhong was a leading figure in the medical field, an authoritative expert in cardiovascular diseases, a recipient of the National Medal of Honor, and a heavyweight in the medical community.
And now he was being questioned by some young girl!
“What are you saying? How dare you question Professor Chen Jianhong?”
Qing Wu said flatly, “I can contact Chen Jianhong and have him admit his own mistake.”
