THE HART HEIR HAS ALREADY OPENED IT.
Ethan stared at the words.
He couldn’t breathe.
Beside him, Alexander stepped backward.
“No.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Alexander shook his head.
“That isn’t possible.”
“Apparently it is.”
“No.
The Hart bloodline can only open the vault from the outside.”
Ethan looked at the bloody handprint.
“Then whose hand is that?”
Alexander didn’t answer.
The red light beneath the print pulsed once.
Then again.
A deep mechanical rumble moved through the walls.
Ethan stepped toward the door.
“Wait.”
Alexander grabbed him.
“Don’t touch it.”
“Clara could be behind there.”
“That isn’t Clara’s blood.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Clara doesn’t have the Hart mark.”
Ethan frowned.
“What mark?”
Alexander pointed toward the handprint.
At the center of the bloody palm was a tiny crescent-shaped scar.
Ethan had seen it before.
On Clara’s hand.
But not there.
On the hand of someone else.
His mind raced.
“Who?”
Alexander’s face went pale.
“Your grandmother.”
Ethan stared at him.
“My grandmother is dead.”
“No.”
Alexander swallowed.
“She’s been dead for twenty-seven years.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Neither does this.”
The door suddenly clicked.
A narrow opening appeared.
Cold air rushed through.
Then a voice came from inside.
“Ethan.”
He froze.
Clara.
“Clara?”
Alexander grabbed his shoulder.
“Don’t.”
But Ethan was already moving.
The door opened wider.
Beyond it was darkness.
“Clara!”
Her voice came again.
“Please.”
Ethan stepped inside.
Alexander followed.
The door slammed shut behind them.
The Room Beneath Room Zero
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
Then lights flickered on.
Ethan stopped.
The chamber was enormous.
It looked less like a vault and more like a hidden archive.
Thousands of files lined the walls.
Photographs.
Documents.
Boxes.
Medical records.
Family trees.
Every shelf carried a date.
Some went back more than a century.
Alexander walked beside Ethan.
“What is this?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Alexander picked up a file.
His face changed.
“What?”
He handed it over.
Ethan read the name.
ALEXANDER VALE.
Below it was a birth certificate.
His brother’s.
Then another file.
EVELYN VALE.
Then another.
NATHANIEL VALE.
Ethan opened his.
His birth certificate was there.
But the father’s name had been blacked out.
He opened another document.
A medical report.
His blood type.
His DNA profile.
Then something caught his eye.
A handwritten note.
THE CHILD MUST NEVER KNOW WHO HIS FATHER IS.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
Alexander whispered:
“Keep going.”
Ethan turned the page.
Another note.
THE BOY WILL BECOME THE KEY.
“What key?”
Alexander didn’t answer.
Ethan opened another folder.
Inside were photographs of Clara.
Hundreds of them.
At different ages.
School.
University.
Her first job.
Her apartment.
Her dates.
Her arguments with Ethan.
Even photographs taken inside her bedroom.
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
“They’ve been watching her her entire life.”
Alexander looked at the photographs.
“No.”
He pointed toward one.
“This was taken before she was born.”
Ethan stared.
It showed Clara’s mother.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Margaret.
And beside them—
Edmund.
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“They knew.”
“They planned everything.”
Ethan turned another page.
Then froze.
A document had been clipped to the file.
At the top:
PROJECT TWO HEIRS
Underneath were several names.
VALE — PRIMARY BLOODLINE
HART — SECONDARY BLOODLINE
CALLAWAY — CUSTODIAL BLOODLINE
And one final designation:
ROMANTIC BOND — REQUIRED
Ethan stared.
“That’s why you and Clara were brought together.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“But who designed this?”
Alexander pointed to the signature.
Ethan looked.
His blood ran cold.
The signature belonged to Margaret Vale.
The Truth Clara Found
Clara sat on a cold stone floor.
Her wrists were free.
The room around her was completely dark.
She could hear water dripping somewhere nearby.
“Hello?”
No answer.
She stood carefully.
Her hands searched the wall.
Nothing.
Then a voice spoke behind her.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
Clara spun around.
“Who are you?”
A woman stepped into the faint light.
Clara’s heart stopped.
The woman was elderly.
Her hair was completely white.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Clara had seen those eyes in old photographs.
She had seen them in her father’s pictures.
She had seen them in the family portraits.
Clara whispered:
“Grandmother?”
The woman smiled.
“Yes.”
Clara stumbled backward.
“But you’re dead.”
“I was supposed to be.”
“Everyone said you died.”
“They lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Edmund wanted me gone.”
Clara stared.
“Edmund?”
The woman nodded.
“He wanted control of the Vale inheritance.”
“And Margaret?”
“She tried to stop him.”
“Did she?”
The old woman looked away.
“She tried.”
Clara stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Her grandmother sighed.
“Your father discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That Edmund had created the Two Heirs plan.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“You mean Ethan and me?”
“Yes.”
“But Margaret signed it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect Ethan.”
Clara shook her head.
“She manipulated us.”
“She saved you.”
“How?”
Her grandmother looked directly at her.
“By making you the only person who could eventually stop Edmund.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
“Me?”
“You are not simply a Hart.”
“What am I?”
The old woman reached inside her coat.
She pulled out a small silver pendant.
She handed it to Clara.
Clara recognized the symbol.
The same circle divided by a line.
The Vale symbol.
“What is this?”
“Your birthright.”
Clara stared at it.
“I don’t understand.”
“You weren’t born into the Hart family.”
Clara’s heart stopped.
“What?”
“You were adopted.”
The room seemed to disappear.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My parents…”
“Your father loved you.”
“And my mother?”
“She knew.”
Clara’s voice trembled.
“Who are my biological parents?”
The old woman looked toward the darkness.
“Your father was a Vale.”
Clara stared.
“Another Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
The woman whispered:
“Daniel.”
Clara’s breath caught.
“Daniel Vale?”
“Yes.”
“The man who was supposed to be Ethan’s father?”
“He wasn’t Ethan’s father.”
Clara shook her head.
“Then what was he?”
The old woman looked at her.
“Your father.”
Clara couldn’t speak.
Her entire life had just changed.
Again.
Then the woman continued.
“Daniel was my son.”
Clara stared.
“Then I’m…”
“My granddaughter.”
Clara looked at the pendant.
“And Ethan?”
The old woman hesitated.
“That’s why you must leave.”
“Why?”
“Because if Ethan learns the truth before Room Zero opens…”
She stopped.
Clara waited.
“What?”
Her grandmother’s face filled with fear.
“Neither of you will survive.”
The Archive
Ethan turned toward Alexander.
“Where is Clara?”
“I don’t know.”
“She called me.”
“Someone used her voice.”
Ethan looked at the files.
“Then we’re being manipulated.”
“Yes.”
He opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph of himself and Clara standing outside the café where they first met.
Underneath was a date.
JUNE 17, 2011.
But below it was another line.
SUCCESSFUL CONTACT.
Ethan’s hands trembled.
He opened another file.
It contained a detailed report of their relationship.
Their first kiss.
Their breakup.
Everything.
Someone had documented their entire relationship.
Then Ethan found the final page.
His eyes stopped.
SEPARATION EVENT: SUCCESSFUL.
CAUSE: FABRICATED BETRAYAL.
EXPECTED OUTCOME: MUTUAL DISTRUST.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“So our breakup…”
Alexander nodded.
“Was engineered.”
“Who did it?”
Alexander pointed to the bottom of the page.
There was one name.
EDMUND VALE.
Ethan stared.
“But Edmund wasn’t supposed to be involved.”
“He was involved from the beginning.”
Ethan looked at the shelves.
“How do we get Clara out?”
Alexander turned.
“There’s another door.”
“Where?”
Alexander pointed toward the back wall.
A small symbol had appeared.
The same symbol on Ethan’s watch.
Ethan approached it.
He pressed his palm against the wall.
Nothing happened.
Alexander tried.
Nothing.
Ethan pulled out the silver photograph.
He placed it against the symbol.
A click.
The wall moved.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
A voice came from below.
“Ethan.”
Clara.
This time, unmistakably.
He ran down the stairs.
Alexander followed.
The staircase ended at a steel door.
Ethan grabbed the handle.
Locked.
He looked around.
“Clara!”
Her voice came from the other side.
“Ethan, don’t open it!”
He froze.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not alone.”
Ethan looked at Alexander.
“Who is with you?”
Silence.
Then Clara whispered:
“My grandmother.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
Alexander stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.”
The door opened.
Clara stood there.
Behind her was an elderly woman.
Ethan stared.
The woman looked at him.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then she said:
“You look like Adrian.”
Ethan’s voice was barely audible.
“Who are you?”
She smiled sadly.
“My name is Eleanor Vale.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“My grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“But you’re dead.”
“I was meant to be.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Why did you disappear?”
Eleanor looked toward Clara.
“Because Edmund wanted the truth buried.”
“What truth?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“The truth about your birth.”
Ethan’s pulse quickened.
“My father?”
“Adrian is your biological father.”
Ethan exhaled.
“Then why did everyone say he died?”
“Because he did.”
Ethan frowned.
“You just said he’s alive.”
“He survived the attempt.”
“So he was almost killed?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
Eleanor’s expression darkened.
“Your grandmother.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Margaret didn’t shoot Daniel.”
“She did.”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“She shot the wrong man.”
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Eleanor whispered:
“The man Margaret believed was Daniel…”
She paused.
“…was Edmund.”
Silence.
Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.
“Then where is Daniel?”
Eleanor looked toward the far end of the chamber.
A door slowly opened.
A man stepped through.
Older.
Scarred.
Walking with a cane.
Ethan stared at him.
He had seen that face before.
In his dreams.
In photographs.
In the mirror.
The man looked at him.
Then smiled.
“Nathaniel.”
Ethan’s lips parted.
“Daniel?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
Ethan couldn’t move.
Daniel looked at Clara.
Then at Eleanor.
Finally, he looked back at Ethan.
“I’ve been waiting twenty-seven years to meet my son.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
But before he could answer— a gunshot echoed from the corridor.
Eleanor fell.
Clara screamed.
Alexander reached for his weapon.
And Daniel whispered:
“Edmund found us.”
The lights went out.
Again.
