The gunshot echoed through the chamber.
Then darkness swallowed everything.
“Eleanor!”
Clara’s scream was followed by the scrape of furniture and hurried footsteps.
Ethan dropped to his knees.
“Grandmother!”
He reached blindly across the floor until his hands found Eleanor.
Warm blood coated his fingers.
“She’s been shot.”
Daniel’s cane struck the floor.
“Don’t move her.”
Ethan looked up.
“She’s dying.”
“I know.”
“Then help me!”
Daniel crouched beside Eleanor and pressed two fingers against her neck.
“She’s alive.”
Ethan exhaled.
“Thank God.”
A metallic click sounded somewhere in the darkness.
Alexander whispered:
“Down!”
A second bullet tore through the room.
It struck the wall where Ethan’s head had been.
Everyone dropped.
Clara crawled toward Ethan.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Daniel stood.
“There’s another exit.”
“Where?”
Daniel pointed into the darkness.
“Behind the archive.”
Alexander moved toward it.
Ethan stayed beside Eleanor.
“I can’t leave her.”
Daniel looked at him.
“If you stay, Edmund gets all of you.”
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“Then I’ll stop him.”
Daniel stared at his son.
For the first time, pride appeared in his expression.
“You really are mine.”
Another gunshot.
Daniel grabbed Ethan.
“Move.”
They escaped through a narrow passage behind the archive.
The tunnel descended sharply.
Ethan carried Eleanor.
Clara followed.
Alexander brought up the rear.
Daniel led them.
Nobody spoke until they reached a heavy wooden door.
Daniel pushed it open.
They emerged inside an abandoned chapel.
Rain hammered the roof.
Ethan carefully placed Eleanor on one of the pews.
Clara knelt beside her.
“She’s still breathing.”
Alexander looked through the windows.
“We need to leave.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Ethan turned.
“Why?”
“Because Edmund won’t stop.”
“Then we’ll keep moving.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Understand what?”
“This isn’t about escaping Edmund.”
Daniel pointed toward the chapel floor.
“It never was.”
A large circular symbol had been carved into the stone.
The same symbol appeared on Ethan’s watch.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What is this?”
“The beginning.”
“Of what?”
“The Vale inheritance.”
Daniel reached into his coat.
He removed a small metal cylinder.
He placed it in the center of the symbol.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The floor began moving.
Clara stepped back.
“What is happening?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Your grandfather built this chapel over the original vault.”
Ethan stared at the opening floor.
“And Room Zero?”
“Is beneath it.”
The floor opened completely.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“How many people know about this?”
“Four.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Me.”
“Eleanor.”
“Margaret.”
“And Edmund.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Then where is my mother?”
Daniel’s face became grim.
“I don’t know.”
Margaret
Margaret woke on a stone floor.
Her hands were bound.
Her wedding ring was missing.
She slowly lifted her head.
Edmund sat across from her.
Except this time, he wasn’t pretending.
No disguise.
No decoy.
No polite smile.
Just Edmund.
“Where is my son?”
Edmund smiled.
“Which one?”
Margaret stared at him.
“You know exactly who.”
“Nathaniel?”
“Yes.”
“He’s searching for you.”
“And Clara?”
“She is where she needs to be.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You’ll never get the inheritance.”
Edmund laughed.
“I already have it.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“You have Calloway Holdings.”
“Exactly.”
“Not the Vale Trust.”
Edmund leaned forward.
“You’re still thinking like a prisoner.”
“I don’t need the trust.”
Margaret frowned.
“Then what do you want?”
Edmund’s smile disappeared.
“I want the bloodline.”
Margaret went still.
“You can’t.”
“I already have.”
She stared at him.
Edmund continued.
“You thought the Two Heirs plan was yours.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“It was.”
“No.”
Edmund shook his head.
“It was mine.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
He removed a document from his coat.
Margaret recognized it immediately.
Her signature.
The Two Heirs agreement.
She stared.
“I signed that.”
“Yes.”
“For Ethan’s protection.”
“Yes.”
“You altered it.”
“No.”
Edmund placed another document beside it.
Margaret’s handwriting.
Her signature.
Her instructions.
But beneath them was something she had never written.
THE HART HEIR SHALL BECOME THE KEY TO THE VALE BLOODLINE.
Margaret’s face went pale.
“I never wrote that.”
“I know.”
“Then who did?”
Edmund smiled.
“Your mother.”
Margaret froze.
“My mother was dead.”
“Not when she wrote it.”
Margaret’s breathing stopped.
Edmund leaned closer.
“She knew what Clara was.”
“What is she?”
Edmund’s eyes gleamed.
“The final heir.”
Margaret stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Clara isn’t a Vale.”
“She is.”
“Her father was Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Then she is Daniel’s daughter.”
Edmund nodded.
“And Daniel was a Vale.”
Margaret’s expression collapsed.
“Then Ethan and Clara…”
“Are cousins.”
Silence.
Edmund watched her carefully.
Margaret whispered:
“You planned this.”
“Every part.”
“You made them fall in love.”
“No.”
Edmund smiled.
“I only made sure they met.”
Margaret looked horrified.
“You’re sick.”
“Perhaps.”
“But why?”
Edmund stood.
“Because the trust requires something only they can provide.”
“What?”
“A willing union between the two branches.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“They can never marry.”
Edmund smiled.
“They already did.”
Margaret froze.
“What?”
Edmund pulled out his phone.
He showed her a photograph.
Ethan and Clara.
A marriage certificate.
Margaret stared at it.
“No.”
Edmund’s voice was quiet.
“They were legally married three years ago.”
Margaret shook her head.
“They broke up.”
“Yes.”
“But they never married.”
Edmund’s smile widened.
“They did.”
Margaret stared at the document.
Then she noticed the date.
October 17, 2019.
The night Ethan disappeared.
The night Clara believed he abandoned her.
The night everything changed.
Margaret whispered:
“What did you do?”
Edmund looked at her.
“I made sure they couldn’t remember.”
The Chapel
Ethan stood at the top of the staircase.
“What’s down there?”
Daniel looked at him.
“The original inheritance chamber.”
“Then let’s go.”
Daniel stopped him.
“There’s something you need to know first.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Daniel hesitated.
“If you enter that chamber, the system will recognize your blood.”
“And?”
“It will reveal everything.”
“Good.”
“No.”
Daniel’s expression was grim.
“Everything includes the truth about Clara.”
Ethan froze.
“What truth?”
Daniel looked at him.
“The truth about why she was chosen.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Chosen for what?”
Daniel looked at her.
“To become Ethan’s wife.”
Silence.
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel handed him the marriage certificate.
Ethan stared.
His name.
Clara’s name.
Their signatures.
The date.
October 17, 2019.
His hands began trembling.
“I don’t remember this.”
“You weren’t supposed to.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Neither do I.”
Daniel looked at them both.
“You were drugged.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“By whom?”
“Richard.”
Clara’s voice broke.
“Why?”
“To make the marriage legal without either of you understanding what you were signing.”
Ethan stared at the certificate.
“But why would Richard do that?”
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“Because the moment you married Clara…”
He paused.
“…the Vale Trust became accessible.”
Ethan looked at Clara.
“And Richard got access.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He didn’t.”
“Then who did?”
Daniel looked at the dark staircase.
“Edmund.”
A cold silence followed.
Ethan’s phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG PERSON.
Another message arrived.
ASK DANIEL WHO KILLED YOUR FATHER.
Ethan slowly looked at Daniel.
“You said Adrian was my father.”
Daniel nodded.
“He was.”
“But you just said I was your son.”
“I did.”
“Then how can both be true?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Who is my father?”
Daniel looked at him.
Then said:
“Adrian was your biological father.”
Ethan waited.
“But I raised you.”
“You never raised me.”
“No.”
Daniel looked away.
“I watched you.”
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“From where?”
“From prison.”
Ethan froze.
“You were in prison?”
“For twenty-two years.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I was convicted of killing Adrian.”
Silence.
Clara covered her mouth.
Alexander looked away.
Ethan’s face went completely blank.
“You killed my father?”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“But I was convicted.”
“By whom?”
Daniel looked at the staircase.
“Your grandfather.”
Ethan’s phone vibrated again.
One final message.
COME TO ROOM ZERO ALONE.
Then:
AND BRING THE WOMAN YOU LOVE.
Ethan looked at Clara.
She looked back at him.
Neither spoke.
Daniel slowly raised his head.
“Don’t go.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because Room Zero isn’t a vault.”
He looked toward the staircase.
“It’s a courtroom.”
Ethan’s brow furrowed.
“For whom?”
Daniel whispered:
“For the dead.”
A deep metallic sound came from beneath them.
The staircase lights turned on one by one.
At the bottom, a massive door began opening.
And from somewhere below came Margaret’s voice.
“Ethan…”
He stepped forward.
“Mom?”
Her voice trembled.
“Don’t trust Daniel.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then another voice echoed from the darkness.
Adrian.
“Don’t trust Margaret.”
Ethan froze.
Two voices.
Two parents.
Two completely different warnings.
And then the final voice spoke.
Edmund.
“Now you understand.”
The door opened completely.
Inside stood three empty chairs.
One marked:
FATHER.
One:
MOTHER.
And one:
HEIR.
Ethan stared at the last chair.
His name slowly appeared across it.
NATHANIEL VALE.
Then a second name appeared beside it.
CLARA HART-VALE.
Clara’s face went pale.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan looked at her.
Before he could answer, the doors slammed shut behind them.
And the lights went out.
