Ethan’s fingers were slipping.
“CLARA!”
The woman beneath the floor screamed again.
“Don’t let her down here!”
Ethan didn’t understand.
He didn’t care.
The woman beneath them was claiming to be the real Clara Hart, but the woman hanging from his hand was the Clara he had loved for years.
The Clara who had laughed with him.
The Clara who had cried against his chest.
The Clara who had once promised him that no matter what happened, she would never leave.
He wasn’t going to let her go.
“Hold on!”
Clara’s fingers tightened around his.
“Ethan!”
“I’m pulling you up.”
Something pulled harder from beneath.
Clara screamed.
Ethan dropped to his stomach and wrapped both arms around her wrist.
“Alexander!”
Alexander rushed forward.
“Grab him!”
Daniel grabbed Ethan’s waist.
Alexander grabbed Daniel.
Together, they pulled.
For one moment, Clara began rising.
Then the woman beneath her spoke.
“Ethan!”
He looked down.
She was crying.
“I’m not trying to hurt her.”
“Then let her go!”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
The woman looked at Clara.
“Because she’s wearing my life.”
Ethan froze.
“What does that mean?”
The woman stared at him.
“She has my name.”
Clara screamed.
“Don’t listen to her!”
The woman shook her head.
“Evelyn doesn’t know what she is.”
Clara’s face went pale.
“Stop calling me that.”
“You were raised to forget.”
“I am Clara.”
The woman below them whispered:
“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”
Ethan looked between them.
Two women.
One identity.
One impossible truth.
Then he noticed something.
A scar.
The woman beneath the floor had a small crescent-shaped scar beneath her left eye.
Clara had the same scar.
Exactly the same.
Ethan’s heart pounded.
“Why do you look identical?”
The woman answered:
“Because we’re sisters.”
Clara stopped struggling.
“What?”
The woman looked at her.
“My name is Clara Hart.”
She pointed at Ethan’s hand.
“And you’re Evelyn Vale.”
Silence.
Ethan’s mind raced.
“But Richard said Clara Hart was dead.”
“He was right.”
The woman smiled sadly.
“She died when she was three.”
Clara stared at her.
“Then who am I?”
The woman beneath the floor looked directly into her eyes.
“Evelyn.”
The mechanism beneath them suddenly activated.
Metallic gears began turning.
The floor started closing.
Ethan pulled harder.
“Get her out!”
Daniel shouted.
“Now!”
They dragged Clara upward.
Her body cleared the opening just as the stone slammed shut.
Ethan pulled her against him.
She was shaking violently.
He held her.
“I’ve got you.”
She buried her face against his chest.
“Ethan…”
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I don’t know who I am.”
He held her tighter.
“You’re Clara.”
She pulled away.
“But what if I’m not?”
Ethan looked into her eyes.
“I know who you are.”
“How?”
“Because I know you.”
She stared at him.
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
He wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I know the way you laugh when you’re trying not to laugh.”
Her lips trembled.
“I know you hate thunderstorms.”
She looked at him.
“I know you pretend you don’t care when you’re hurt.”
Another tear fell.
“And I know you.”
He touched her cheek.
“Whatever name they gave you, whatever blood runs through your veins…”
He paused.
“You’re still the woman I love.”
Clara closed her eyes.
For the first time since the nightmare began, she smiled.
Then the chamber shook.
Daniel shouted:
“Move!”
The ceiling cracked.
Dust rained down.
Alexander pointed toward the far wall.
“There’s an exit.”
They ran.
The tunnel ended at another room.
This one was smaller.
Older.
In the center stood a wooden table.
On it were four objects.
A wedding ring.
A silver pendant.
A black ledger.
And a cassette recorder.
Daniel stopped.
“No.”
Ethan looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel stared at the recorder.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because I destroyed that.”
Alexander walked toward it.
“What’s on it?”
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because once you hear it, everything changes.”
Ethan stared at the recorder.
“Is it about my father?”
Daniel nodded.
“Which one?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“All of them.”
Silence.
Ethan picked up the recorder.
There was already a cassette inside.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then Margaret’s voice.
Young.
Terrified.
“If you’re hearing this, then I failed.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
The recording continued.
“Ethan, if you’re alive, I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“I never wanted you to inherit the Vale fortune.”
Ethan frowned.
“I wanted you to escape it.”
Clara looked at him.
Margaret continued.
“Your father, Adrian, discovered what the inheritance really was.”
Static.
“He tried to destroy it.”
A man’s voice suddenly interrupted.
Adrian.
“Margaret, you can’t do this.”
Then Margaret again.
“I have no choice.”
Adrian’s voice grew louder.
“If you separate the children, Edmund wins.”
Margaret began crying.
“He already has one of them.”
Ethan froze.
“One of who?”
The recording continued.
“Evelyn must disappear.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“Clara must disappear too.”
The tape stopped.
Silence.
Clara looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan pressed play again.
Nothing.
The tape had ended.
Daniel looked away.
Clara stepped toward him.
“You knew.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I promised your mother.”
“I’m not a child anymore.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me!”
Daniel looked at her.
“You weren’t supposed to survive.”
Clara stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Both of you were targets.”
“Who wanted us dead?”
“Edmund.”
“Why?”
“Because he couldn’t control either of you.”
Clara looked at Ethan.
“Then why did he let us live?”
Daniel answered:
“He didn’t.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Daniel pointed toward the wedding ring.
“That ring wasn’t an inheritance key.”
Ethan picked it up.
“Then what is it?”
Daniel’s face became grim.
“A tracking device.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
“He’s been tracking us?”
“For years.”
Ethan examined the ring.
A tiny light blinked beneath the stone.
He dropped it.
The chamber door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Edmund stood there.
But he wasn’t alone.
Richard stood beside him.
And between them—
Margaret.
Her hands were tied.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Mom.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Don’t come closer.”
Edmund smiled.
“Your mother has been very difficult.”
Ethan’s fists clenched.
“Let her go.”
Edmund shook his head.
“You still think this is a negotiation.”
“What do you want?”
Ethan frowned.
“Choice?”
Edmund pointed toward Clara.
“You can save her.”
Then toward Margaret.
“Or you can save your mother.”
Clara stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Edmund smiled.
“Of course she would say that.”
Ethan looked at Margaret.
“What happens if I choose Clara?”
Edmund answered calmly.
“Margaret dies.”
“And if I choose Mom?”
“Clara dies.”
Ethan stared at him.
“No.”
Edmund tilted his head.
“That’s the beauty of the Vale inheritance.”
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
He gestured toward the table.
The black ledger opened by itself.
Pages turned rapidly.
Then stopped.
A final document appeared.
Edmund spoke.
“The trust requires the heir to sacrifice one bloodline to preserve the other.”
Ethan stared.
“That’s not inheritance.”
“No.”
Edmund smiled.
“It’s a test.”
Clara shook her head.
“There has to be another way.”
“There always is.”
Edmund looked at Ethan.
“But you have to find it.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re giving me a puzzle.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father did.”
Ethan froze.
“Which father?”
Edmund smiled.
“The one you haven’t met yet.”
A door opened behind him.
A man stepped into the chamber.
Ethan’s heart stopped.
Adrian.
Alive.
But Adrian wasn’t looking at Ethan.
He was looking at Margaret.
Margaret began crying.
Adrian whispered:
“You lied to him.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I was protecting him.”
“You’ve been protecting him for twenty-seven years.”
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Now it’s time he knew the truth.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What truth?”
Adrian took a slow breath.
Then pointed toward Clara.
“She isn’t your cousin.”
Everyone went silent.
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Adrian looked at Clara.
“She’s your sister.”
Clara’s face went white.
“No.”
Adrian continued.
“She isn’t Evelyn.”
Ethan stared.
“Then who is she?”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’s Clara.”
He pointed toward the hidden chamber below them.
“And the woman beneath the floor…”
He paused.
“…is the real Evelyn.”
Ethan’s mind reeled.
“But you said—”
“I know what I said.”
Adrian looked at Margaret.
“She changed the records.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Because the real Evelyn was the one Edmund wanted.”
Ethan looked toward the floor.
The woman beneath it.
The girl claiming to be Clara.
The sister he had never known.
He suddenly understood why the woman had begged him not to let “her” come down.
But one question remained.
“Then why does the woman downstairs look exactly like Clara?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Because they’re twins.”
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
“Twins?”
Adrian nodded.
“Identical twins.”
Clara whispered:
“How many children were born that night?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Three.”
Ethan froze.
“Three?”
Adrian nodded.
“Ethan.”
“Evelyn.”
Then his eyes moved toward the floor.
“And Clara.”
Silence.
Three children.
Three bloodlines.
Three identities.
And suddenly the entire mystery changed.
Edmund smiled.
“Now you finally understand why Room Zero was built.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Why?”
Edmund’s smile disappeared.
“To hide the third heir.”
The lights went out.
And from somewhere beneath the floor— a baby began crying.
