Couldn’t see Alexander.

Couldn’t see Daniel.

He could only hear breathing.

His own.

Clara’s.

And somewhere farther away, the slow, uneven breathing of someone else.

“Clara?”

“I’m here.”

Her voice came from his left.

Ethan reached for her hand.

Their fingers found each other.

She squeezed tightly.

“Don’t let go.”

“I won’t.”

A metallic click sounded overhead.

Then another.

One by one, small lights illuminated the chamber.

Ethan looked around.

The three chairs remained in the center.

FATHER.

MOTHER.

HEIR.

But something had changed.

There was now a fourth chair.

It stood behind the other three.

Its label was simple.

JUDGE.

Clara stared at it.

“Who is supposed to sit there?”

Nobody answered.

Then a screen descended from the ceiling.

A distorted image appeared.

Edmund.

He was sitting somewhere in darkness.

“You’ve arrived.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where is my mother?”

“Safe.”

“Where is Adrian?”

“Alive.”

“Where is Nathan?”

“Where he belongs.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You’ve been manipulating everyone.”

Edmund smiled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because none of you would have found the truth otherwise.”

Clara stepped forward.

“You drugged us.”

“I protected you.”

“You erased our memories.”

“I removed unnecessary pain.”

“You destroyed our relationship.”

Edmund’s expression remained calm.

“No.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“You destroyed your relationship.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because you were both afraid.”

Clara shook her head.

“You don’t get to decide what we feel.”

“No.”

Edmund smiled.

“But I can decide what happens to your families.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young woman.

Ethan recognized her.

“Mom.”

Another photograph appeared.

Adrian.

Then Daniel.

Then Eleanor.

Then Clara’s parents.

One after another.

Finally—

Ethan.

A newborn baby.

Beside him was another infant.

Clara.

Ethan stared.

“They’re twins?”

Clara’s face went pale.

“No.”

Edmund’s voice came through the speakers.

“Not twins.”

The photograph zoomed in.

The babies were lying beside each other.

A single hospital bracelet was visible.

BABY A — VALE

The other read:

BABY B — HART

Clara whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Edmund smiled.

“Nothing is impossible when the records are controlled.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What happened?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

The older man lowered his head.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I swear.”

“You were there.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I was in prison.”

“For twenty-two years.”

“Yes.”

“Because Edmund framed you.”

“Yes.”

“Then who changed our birth records?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Margaret.”

Ethan froze.

“My mother?”

Daniel nodded.

“She separated you.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because it’s true.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Daniel took a breath.

“You and Clara were born on the same night.”

Clara looked at him.

“But eighteen months separate our birthdays.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Because Clara wasn’t born when the records say she was.”

Silence.

Ethan looked at Clara.

Clara looked equally horrified.

Edmund’s voice returned.

“Now you’re beginning to understand.”

The Missing Eighteen Months

Clara walked toward the screen.

Edmund smiled.

“Because you weren’t supposed to exist.”

Her face went white.

“What?”

“Your mother was pregnant with you when Margaret discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That Daniel wasn’t the only Vale child who survived.”

Clara stared.

“Who else?”

Edmund’s smile disappeared.

“Your father.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Edmund laughed.

“You still think you can protect them?”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“I will.”

“You couldn’t protect Adrian.”

Daniel went still.

“You couldn’t protect Margaret.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You couldn’t protect your daughter.”

Clara stared at Daniel.

“My daughter?”

Edmund smiled.

“Ask him.”

Clara turned.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

Ethan looked at him.

“Daniel?”

The older man couldn’t speak.

Clara stepped closer.

“What daughter?”

Daniel finally whispered:

“You.”

Clara’s breath caught.

“My father…”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were my father.”

“I am.”

“Then why did you say I wasn’t?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

Clara’s voice shook.

“Keep me alive from whom?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Edmund.”

The image changed.

A document appeared.

A custody agreement.

Daniel’s name.

Margaret’s name.

Eleanor’s name.

And another.

EDMUND VALE.

Clara stared.

“What is that?”

Daniel whispered:

“The agreement that made you a weapon.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Explain.”

Daniel looked at him.

“The Vale family discovered that the inheritance could only be activated by two direct descendants.”

“The two heirs.”

“Yes.”

“Me and Clara.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because the inheritance wasn’t money.”

Ethan frowned.

“Then what was it?”

Daniel looked at the three chairs.

“Power.”

The Original Inheritance

The screen changed again.

Old maps appeared.

Property records.

Bank accounts.

Political contracts.

Company structures.

Names Ethan didn’t recognize.

Then a single document.

THE VALE FOUNDATION.

Ethan stared.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered.

“The organization that secretly controlled Calloway Holdings.”

Clara frowned.

“Controlled?”

“Calloway Holdings was only the public face.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What was behind it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Thousands of companies.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The Vale family built a private financial network generations ago.”

“And Edmund controls it.”

“He tried.”

“Then who does?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Me?”

“The moment you and Clara legally married, control transferred.”

Ethan remembered the certificate.

October 17, 2019.

The night everything changed.

“But I don’t remember marrying her.”

Daniel nodded.

“Because Richard drugged you.”

Clara whispered:

“Why would Edmund allow it?”

“He didn’t.”

Everyone went silent.

Daniel continued.

“Richard acted alone.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“So the marriage wasn’t Edmund’s plan.”

“No.”

“Then why did Edmund say it was?”

“Because he needed you to believe your relationship was manufactured.”

Ethan looked at Clara.

“And it wasn’t?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“The first time we met…”

“Was real.”

“Our first kiss?”

“Real.”

“Our love?”

Daniel looked at them.

“Real.”

Clara closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Ethan reached for her hand.

She took it.

For the first time since entering the chamber, the confusion between them softened.

Then the screen flickered. The source of this chapter is g.com.

Edmund appeared again.

“You believe him?”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“Yes.”

Edmund smiled.

“Then perhaps you’re ready for the final truth.”

The screen went black.

A door opened behind them.

Everyone turned.

A man walked into the chamber.

Ethan stared.

Richard.

But Richard looked different.

Older.

Exhausted.

And terrified.

He walked toward the three chairs.

“I need to tell you something.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where’s Clara’s mother?”

Richard’s eyes moved to Clara.

“Dead.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

“She was killed seven years ago.”

“By whom?”

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Me.”

Clara’s face collapsed.

“No.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always have a choice.”

Richard swallowed.

“Not when Edmund has your entire family.”

Ethan stared.

“You killed her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She discovered the marriage certificate.”

Clara shook her head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

Richard looked at her.

“She discovered the truth about your birth.”

“What truth?”

Richard took a folded document from his pocket.

He handed it to Clara.

She opened it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Her lips parted.

Ethan stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Clara couldn’t speak.

“Clara?”

She handed him the paper.

Ethan read it.

His face changed.

The document was a birth registration.

But the child’s name had been changed.

The original name was visible beneath the ink.

EVELYN VALE.

Ethan looked up.

“Evelyn?”

Richard nodded.

“Your sister.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Richard’s eyes filled with regret.

“Evelyn wasn’t your sister.”

Clara stared.

“She was you.”

Silence.

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Your real name isn’t Clara Hart.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“You were born Evelyn Vale.”

The room seemed to spin.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ethan looked at Clara.

She was trembling.

Richard whispered:

“Margaret changed your identity because Edmund was hunting the second heir.”

Clara’s voice barely escaped.

“Then who is Clara Hart?”

Richard looked at her.

“A girl who died.”

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

“Your identity was given to you.”

“Whose?”

Richard’s expression became haunted.

“Your sister’s.”

Ethan stared.

“But Evelyn was supposed to be dead.”

Richard nodded.

“She is.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then who am I?”

Before anyone could answer, the screen behind them came alive.

Edmund appeared one final time.

He smiled.

“Now you’re asking the right question.”

The chamber doors locked.

The three chairs began moving.

The FATHER chair turned toward Daniel.

The MOTHER chair turned toward Margaret’s empty place.

And the HEIR chair turned toward Ethan.

But the fourth chair—

JUDGE— turned toward Clara.

Edmund’s voice echoed through the chamber.

“Welcome home, Evelyn.”

Clara stared at the chair.

Then the floor beneath her feet opened.

She fell.

“CLARA!”

Ethan lunged.

His fingers caught hers.

For one terrifying second, he held her.

Then something below grabbed her ankle.

Clara screamed.

“ETHAN!”

He pulled harder.

“I’ve got you!”

A second hand emerged from the darkness.

It grabbed Clara’s other leg.

Ethan looked down.

A pale face stared up at him from beneath the floor.

A woman.

Young.

Terrified.

And identical to Clara.

Ethan’s blood froze.

The woman whispered:

“Don’t let her come down here.”

Ethan stared.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Clara.

Then back at him.

“I am the real Clara Hart.”

And Ethan’s grip suddenly began to slip.
