Shao Wenyue brought Wen Yu back to the military hospital.
Wang Xuemei and Shao Kai rushed over. In the quiet corridor, only the sound of footsteps echoed against the floor.
“Wenyue, where is Wen Wen? Is she badly hurt?”
“Her leg is broken.”
Shao Wenyue stood straight outside the operating room, his eyes filled with faint worry.
Wang Xuemei quickly asked, “Any other injuries?”
“There’s a cut on her hand and a scrape on her palm. They’re all superficial wounds, nothing serious. The only concern is whether they’ll leave scars.”
Girls always cared about things like that. Wen Yu had fair, delicate skin—so white it looked like a soft rice dumpling. She clearly took care of herself well, probably applying snow cream every day.
If she really ended up with scars, she would definitely be upset.
Thinking of Wen Yu’s tearful, pitiful face, Shao Wenyue frowned. It looked like he’d have to arrange scar-removal ointment.
“Anything else?” Wang Xuemei asked again.
“Mom, what exactly are you trying to ask?”
Wang Xuemei looked embarrassed. But Shao Wenyue immediately understood what she meant.
“No,” he said flatly.
Wang Xuemei sighed in relief. “That’s good, that’s good. You don’t understand how much harm something like this can do to a woman. If she leaves with psychological trauma, it could ruin her entire life.”
Too nervous, she sat down on a bench nearby.
“Wen Wen got hurt in our place. We must take good care of her. Once she recovers, we’ll send her back to the capital.”
Shao Wenyue’s expression changed slightly. “Send her back to the capital? What if something like this happens again?”
“Do you think you can keep her here forever?” Wang Xuemei glared at him.
Shao Kai, observing quietly, glanced at his son. This kid… was he reluctant to let Wen Yu go back?
It wasn’t surprising. Shao Wenyue had barely interacted with women growing up, and there weren’t many girls his age in the compound. If he had liked someone, he would’ve married long ago instead of staying single at twenty-five.
Maybe he was just too familiar with the girls around him.
But Wen Yu was different.
She looked delicate, but she was strong at heart. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have come to the Southwest at all—the conditions here were nothing like the capital.
Strength was a good quality. Add in her beauty, education, and gentle temperament—it wasn’t strange that she caught his son’s attention.
Shao Kai patted his son’s shoulder.
“This is your chance. Whether you can keep her here depends on you.”
“As long as Wen Wen agrees, your mother and I will talk to her father. You just need to sincerely apologize, and everything before that can be put behind you.”
Wang Xuemei immediately asked, “What do you mean? Has this kid finally figured it out?”
Just earlier, he wanted her to leave—now he wanted to keep her?
Shao Wenyue’s ears turned slightly red. “It’s not about figuring out or not. Wen Yu and I already held a wedding. Even if the ceremony wasn’t completed, everyone in the compound attended the banquet. That means they acknowledged our relationship. I should take responsibility for her.”
His words almost directly admitted that, in his mind, Wen Yu was already his wife.
Wang Xuemei clapped her hands. “So you finally woke up? You only start regretting after upsetting her?”
“I didn’t.”
Shao Wenyue scratched the back of his head. If he had known Wen Yu liked him, he either wouldn’t have married her at all—or since he did, he would definitely respond properly.
Besides, he had already touched her hand and leg. Shouldn’t he take responsibility?
Otherwise, that would just be outright misconduct.
He straightened his back. Yes—he had to take responsibility.
Seeing his son’s personality, Wang Xuemei knew once he made a decision, ten bulls couldn’t pull him back. She felt both happy and worried.
What if this was one-sided affection?
After all, Wen Yu had suffered so much—would she really forgive him so easily?
Shao Wenyue had already thought about this on the way back.
He wouldn’t let her leave again. That was a man’s responsibility.
Even if the wedding ceremony had gone wrong, they were still married. If Wen Yu insisted on leaving, that would be like abandoning her husband.
At that moment, the operating room door opened.
Shao Wenyue immediately stepped forward, his eyes falling on the hospital bed. Wen Yu’s face was far too pale.
“Does it hurt?”
Wen Yu shook her head. She was exhausted and didn’t want to speak. She just wanted to sleep.
Shao Wenyue gently held her bandaged hand. “Is there anything you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”
“I don’t want anything.”
“Then I’ll make some rice porridge.”
Wang Xuemei asked the doctor, “Doctor, how is Wen Wen? Is it serious?”
“The patient’s knee injury is severe. She must rest and avoid any secondary injury, or she may have long-term complications.”
“What about other injuries?”
“Nothing major. Just rest and recover.”
Both Shao Kai and Wang Xuemei finally let out a breath of relief.
They followed as Wen Yu was sent to the ward.
