Wen Yu had originally only been pretending to sleep, but she actually ended up falling asleep for real.

Shao Wenye knew she hadn’t rested well the night before. Even though she hadn’t cried out in pain or complained, broken bones were unbearable to endure. The fact that she had managed to hold on already said a lot. It was good that she could finally rest now.

The ward was quiet, filled only with soft breathing.Full novel: The Pretty Military Wife of the 1970s — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Morning sunlight filtered through dense tree branches outside, passed through the window, and fell gently across Wen Yu’s face, as if coating her in a layer of soft radiance.

Bathed in light, even her black, smooth hair looked gentler than usual.

Shao Wenye had excellent eyesight. He could clearly see the fine downy hairs on her face, her skin so delicate it seemed almost translucent, and her eyelashes—long and thick like brushes, slightly curled at the tips.

Below that was her straight nose bridge and pale lips due to illness, lacking color and making her look especially fragile.

It was precisely this fragility that made Shao Wenye feel a sudden ache of pity.

Perhaps because of everything she had been through recently, even in sleep her delicate brows were faintly furrowed.

His fingers twitched slightly. He wanted to smooth out that crease, to tell her not to worry, not to be sad, that she could rely on him.

But before his hand could touch her brow, knocking sounded outside, and someone pushed the door open.

Shao Wenye quickly pulled his hand back, tense, glancing at Wen Yu—fortunately, she hadn’t woken up.

“She’s asleep?” Wang Xuemei asked in a low voice.

“Mm.”

She walked to the bedside, looked at Wen Yu, and placed a thermos on the cabinet. “Mom made her some brown sugar eggs. Feed her when she wakes up.”

“Mm.” Seeing his mother still staring at Wen Yu, Shao Wenye began urging her to leave. “Mom, you should go to work.”

The art troupe wasn’t as easy as outsiders imagined—even without performances, there were daily rehearsals.

Wang Xuemei was still worried. “Should we hire a caregiver? Men are clumsy. What if you hurt Wenwen?”

“No need. I can take care of her.”

If he hadn’t wanted to personally take care of Wen Yu, why would he have taken leave?

Seeing that they might disturb Wen Yu, Wang Xuemei didn’t insist further. “If you can’t handle something, go find Wanwan and ask her to help.”

“Mm.”

Although Wang Xuemei had been displeased with Xu Wan because of what happened earlier, when it came down to it, she still trusted family first.

People inevitably bump into each other in life; friction was normal. As long as one didn’t cross the line in major matters, nothing was irreparable.

She patted her son’s shoulder. “Take good care of Wenwen.”

“Mom, just go.”

If she kept talking, she would wake Wen Yu up.

Wang Xuemei shot him a glare. Now he knew how to care about her? Where was he before?

With a cold snort, she left the room to give the young couple space.

Hopefully this stubborn son would finally behave and make Wen Yu forgive him soon, then get the marriage certificate and properly become husband and wife.

Once they had the certificate, they’d be bound for life—no chance of separation.

After the door closed again, Shao Wenye sat down beside Wen Yu like before, quietly watching her sleep.

The sunlight was good—he wanted her to get more of it for recovery, but also worried it might be too bright and disturb her rest.

After a moment of hesitation, he slowly raised his hand. A shadow fell across Wen Yu’s eyes, blocking the harsh light.

Afraid of being noticed, his heart pounded violently, as if it might leap out of his throat.

It was the first time Shao Wenye had ever felt nervous like this. Beneath it, there was also a faint, unfamiliar joy sprouting in his chest.

It was strange—but he didn’t resist it. In fact, he accepted this change quite willingly.

Wen Yu didn’t wake up until noon.

The moment she opened her eyes, she saw Shao Wenye and was slightly confused. “Why are you still here?”

“What, is that strange?”

Wen Yu nodded, then shook her head. She was increasingly unable to understand him. He had been cold and distant before, but now his attitude had changed so drastically—it was hard to adapt.

“Hungry? Do you want food or water first?”

“Wash my face first.”

“Mm.”

He went to fetch a basin of water without complaint.

Because Wen Yu’s hands were still bandaged, she couldn’t touch water. So for now, she had no choice but to rely on him.

He wet the towel and pressed it directly over her face.

The entire face was covered, and she nearly couldn’t breathe.

Wen Yu struggled slightly, and Shao Wenye quickly pulled it away, looking nervous. “What’s wrong?”

“Shao Wenye, are you trying to murder me?”

“I usually wash my face like this,” he said innocently.

Wen Yu was so angry her chest hurt. “You can hold your breath. I can’t.”

She wasn’t used to the altitude here to begin with. That move nearly made her pass out.

“I didn’t mean it,” he said quickly.

She glared at him hard. “If you did mean it, that would be something else entirely.”

He folded the towel more carefully. “This won’t suffocate you now.”

Seeing how obedient and almost overly careful he looked, Wen Yu suddenly felt a little guilty.

Maybe she had overreacted. After all, he clearly wasn’t used to taking care of people—how could he do everything perfectly?

Sigh… she shouldn’t have lost her temper just now.

After he finished wiping her face, she quietly extended her hand. “Also wipe the parts not wrapped in bandages.”

A faint smile flashed in Shao Wenye’s eyes.

No wonder people said Wen Yu had a soft temper—it really seemed true.

Her fingers were long and slender. He carefully wiped them one by one. Occasionally, his fingers brushed hers, and the soft touch made his chest tighten slightly.

He had held her hand on their wedding day, but he couldn’t remember feeling anything like this then.

Now, when he tried to recall it, his mind was completely blank.

Shao Wenye was forced to once again confront his own shortcomings—he had married her, yet never truly placed her in his heart.

Noticing his expression darkening again, Wen Yu was puzzled.

Did she say something wrong again?

She calmly looked away and pretended not to notice.

So it turned out—it wasn’t only women whose hearts were hard to read. Men were the same.
