The teenage boy was torn.

To eat, or not to eat?

For all the years he had been a ghost, this was the first time he felt such intense hunger.Full novel: The Retired Warlord’s Guide to Raising a Virtual Kid — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It felt like his stomach was twisting in knots, craving Lei Yating’s flesh and blood.

Just as he opened his mouth to bite down on her neck, Lei Yating guided the Primordial Qi through her body for a cycle, drawing it all into her Dantian.

The teenage boy let out a sound of surprise.

“Why does it not smell appetizing anymore?”

Lei Yating was equally bewildered.

Did she…

did she just hear a male voice?

Suddenly, a wave of warmth spread across her chest.

She instinctively reached up to touch it, only to realize the burning object was the talisman Nezha had given her.

Lei Yating quickly pulled the talisman out.

The teenage boy didn’t feel much of a reaction, only a slight discomfort, but the mute female ghost beside him let out a piercing, ear-splitting shriek.

“Who’s wailing like a—”

Her roommates, annoyed at having their peace disturbed, snapped angrily.

But when they got a clear look at the thing “wailing,” their voices abruptly cut off, as if someone had seized them by the throat.

The bright fluorescent lights went out with a loud CLICK, leaving the girls to make out the scene in the room by the faint moonlight.

A blood-drenched female ghost in a white dress was clinging to the iron railing of a bunk bed.

Ghost energy billowed ominously around her as dark red, foul-smelling tears of blood rolled down from her empty eye sockets.

“A g-ghost—”

“AHHHHHH—”

The girls turned pale with fright, their high-decibel screams nearly shattering the lightbulbs.

Lei Yating was equally terrified.

She instinctively threw the talisman in her hand.

Startled, the teenage boy floated backward, but the mute female ghost surged forward instead, as if thoroughly enraged by her actions.

Seeing this, a trace of solemnity appeared on the boy’s deathly pale face.

The female ghost had blood on her hands, though the life she took belonged to her sworn enemy.

For years, to prevent herself from harming others, she had hidden in the first basement level and the parking garage of the hospital, relying on the boy’s ghost energy to suppress her instincts and maintain her sanity.

Only when she was truly bored would she occasionally scare someone whose lifespan was nearing its end.

Nothing had ever gone wrong in all these years, but today, Lei Yating’s talisman had triggered her ferocious nature.

If he didn’t stop her, the mortals in this dorm room…

no, perhaps the entire girls’ dormitory wouldn’t live to see tomorrow’s sunrise.

“Don’t provoke her any further!”

The boy shouted to stop her, but he didn’t expect Lei Yating to make another move.

She pulled out a Red Silk from nowhere.

It emanated a righteous aura that deeply disgusted the teenage ghost, and an indescribable wave of violent fury dyed his eyes red.

Just then, a talisman struck him right in the face, thoroughly enraging him.

Initially, only one of his eyes had turned red, but now both were stained a deep, bloodthirsty crimson.

This was the exact scene Pei Ye saw when she opened the dorm room door.

The mute female ghost had wrapped her long hair around the necks of Bai Xiaoxiao, Zhou Huirong, and the others, hoisting them into the air.

Their eyes were practically rolling back in their heads.

Meanwhile, Lei Yating was frantically using the Red Silk and talismans to fend off a teenage boy wearing a hospital gown.

The boy seemed to be trying his best to restrain himself, which allowed Lei Yating to barely hold her ground for a while.

A cigarette dangling from her lips, Pei Ye leaned against the doorframe and spoke up, interrupting the humans and ghosts’ self-indulgent chaos.

“I say, a living, breathing person is standing right here.

Could you all not ignore me with such perfect synchronization?”

Was Lei Yating’s female lead halo too blinding, leaving a nobody like herself completely unnoticed?

Back in the day, she, Pei Ye, was an all-powerful figure.

Wherever she went, she was the center of attention.

But now?

She was ignored everywhere, her presence reduced to nothing more than a background prop.

The stark contrast between past and present was enough to warrant a tear of sympathy.

Seeing Pei Ye open the door from the outside, Lei Yating decisively lashed out at the boy with her Red Silk.

Taking advantage of his dodge, Lei Yating violently shoved Pei Ye out of the way.

She even pushed Pei Ye from behind, forcing her to face the fierce ghost head-on to buy herself a chance to escape.

Pei Ye was speechless.

They were roommates, for crying out loud.

Did she really have to be so ruthless?

She flicked the cigarette from her hand, sending it flying straight through the mute female ghost’s throat.

The ghost was scorched by the unlit cigarette, instantly burning away thirty to forty percent of her surrounding yin energy.

Her soul body became visibly transparent.

Dropping to a crouch with her arms wrapped around her head, she trembled violently.

The hair suspending Bai Xiaoxiao and the others naturally lost its support.

The girls plummeted like sacks of potatoes, landing hard on their rears.

Ignoring the pain after escaping by the skin of their teeth, they clutched their throats and greedily gasped for fresh air.

Following a fit of violent coughing that left their eyes red, they shivered in terror, their faces smeared with tears and snot.

“Bro, how about staying for a chat?”

Pei Ye rested a hand on the teenage boy’s shoulder.

It looked like a casual gesture, but she was actually gripping his vital spot.

His violent fury receded like the tide, and his crimson eyes faded back to a deathly, pure black.

He completely reverted to his former innocent and harmless self.

As for that female ghost—she was crouching on the ground, holding her head and whimpering.

“As a male ghost, sneaking into a girls’ dorm in the middle of the night is blatant harassment.

You’d better have a good explanation.

And you guys almost killed someone!”

The teenage boy remained silent for a moment.

His gaze shifted to Zhou Huirong, who was huddled together with the others behind Pei Ye, and he lowered his eyes, muttering aggrievedly.

“I was officially invited in.

I didn’t harass anyone.”

Pei Ye raised an eyebrow.

“Who invited you in?”

The teenage ghost extended a slender finger and pointed at Zhou Huirong, speaking in a slow, mild tone.

“I knocked on the window, and she opened it to let me in.”

He hadn’t harassed anyone.

He had politely knocked on the window and had even waited obediently on the lower bunk for several hours without peeking at the girls’ panties or tank tops.

Zhou Huirong’s face turned ashen at his words.

When had she ever opened the window for a ghost?

Her mind was a total mess right now; how could she possibly recall any details?

“Then what are you doing here?”

Pei Ye asked the boy with a smile.

This ghost was rather polite; it would have been even better if he hadn’t attacked them just now.

The teenage ghost stared faintly at Pei Ye and accused her, “You bullied my subordinate.

I came to get payback for her.”

He was a good boss.

Pei Ye was speechless again.

When did she ever bully—

Her gaze fell on the pitiful female ghost who looked like she desperately wanted to bury her head in the sand, and Pei Ye suddenly understood.

It seemed that during the day, she had mistaken the female ghost for a prank projection, shoving her into the sink and flushing her down the toilet.

No wonder they came knocking at her door.

“She scared me.

My reaction was a bit extreme, but it wasn’t uncalled for.

You have to realize she was the one at fault first.

As a boss, you need to be reasonable.

You can’t just blindly protect your subordinates, or you’ll spoil them,” Pei Ye lectured the boy earnestly.

A boss shouldn’t coddle their subordinates like this, let alone clean up their messes without distinguishing right from wrong.

If it happened too often, they would become arrogant from the favoritism and eventually provoke a troublemaker the boy couldn’t handle—like her, Pei Ye.

“Most importantly, you’re no match for me.

You came here looking for trouble.

It’s one thing if you can win, but if you can’t, wouldn’t it be incredibly embarrassing in front of your subordinate?

Wouldn’t that damage your prestige as a boss?

Am I right?”

Hearing this, the boy nodded seriously.

“That makes sense!”

Pei Ye was just about to praise him for his willingness to learn, when the boy continued, sounding a little aggrieved.

“I didn’t want to resort to violence right from the start.

If we could resolve things peacefully, I wouldn’t have used force.

We live in an era of peace now; us ghosts are reasonable, too.

But you living people are so unreasonable!

Mute has spent years cultivating her character, and you almost ruined her cultivation.”
