Aanya couldn’t move.
Her mother’s voice still echoed inside the chamber.
“Aarav was never the experiment.”
Then—
“You were.”
The Heart fell silent.
Aanya slowly turned toward Aarav.
He looked just as shocked.
“That doesn’t make sense,” he said.
Aanya’s voice was barely audible.
“Maybe it does.”
Aarav frowned.
“How?”
“The Heart has always responded to me.”
She looked at her glowing palm.
“It listened to my first wish.”
“It listened to your second.”
“And the resets started because of me.”
Aarav shook his head.
“That doesn’t mean you were an experiment.”
The old woman interrupted.
“She’s right about one thing.”
They looked at her.
“The Heart was built around Aanya.”
Aanya stared.
“Why?”
The woman looked at the original Heart.
“Because your mother discovered something no one else could.”
“What?”
“Your memory wasn’t behaving like everyone else’s.”
Aarav frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The woman answered:
“You could remember things that hadn’t happened yet.”
Aanya’s eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.”
The woman shook her head.
“Ravenhall has never been interested in what is possible.”
She pointed toward the Heart.
“It was interested in what could be made possible.”
Aanya stepped closer.
“Then why did Nightfall need Aarav?”
The woman looked at him.
“Because Aanya’s memories were unstable.”
Aarav understood.
“And I stabilized them.”
“Exactly.”
Aanya looked at him.
“So we weren’t just connected.”
The woman nodded.
“You were designed to be connected.”
Aanya stepped backward.
“No.”
Aarav immediately moved toward her.
“Aanya.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t want this.”
“What?”
“That everything between us was planned.”
Aarav looked at her.
“Our memories.”
“Our first meeting.”
“Our connection.”
She looked at him.
“What if none of it was ours?”
Then he said:
“Then I’ll choose it again.”
Aanya looked up.
“What?”
“I don’t care who planned our first meeting.”
He stepped closer.
“I don’t care who connected our memories.”
His voice became softer.
“I know what I choose now.”
Aanya’s expression softened.
The Heart pulsed.
But this time— it didn’t feel threatening.
It felt almost peaceful.
A sound came from inside the Heart.
A recording began.
Aanya’s mother appeared as a projection.
She looked directly at Aanya.
“If you’re seeing this, then you’ve reached the original chamber.”
Aanya whispered:
“Mum…”
Her mother’s expression was serious.
“There is something I couldn’t tell you.”
The recording continued.
“The first experiment wasn’t designed to control you.”
Aanya frowned.
“It was designed to protect you.”
Aarav looked confused.
“Protect her from what?”
The recording answered:
“From the Observer.”
The chamber became silent.
Aanya’s eyes widened.
“The Observer?”
Her mother’s voice continued.
“The Observer wasn’t created by Ravenhall.”
Aarav stepped forward.
“Then who created it?”
The recording flickered.
“I don’t know.”
The projection became unstable.
“But I discovered something.”
The Heart brightened.
“The Observer had been watching Aanya since before she was born.”
Aanya’s breathing stopped.
“Before?”
Her mother nodded.
“That’s why we built Nightfall.”
Aanya looked at Aarav.
“To hide me.”
“Yes.”
“But why connect me to Aarav?”
Her mother’s expression softened.
“Because you needed someone the Observer couldn’t see through.”
Aarav stared.
“Me?”
“Your memories were naturally resistant to observation.”
Aarav looked stunned.
“So I wasn’t the experiment.”
“No.”
The recording smiled faintly.
“You were the shield.”
The projection disappeared.
Aanya stood silently.
Aarav looked at her.
“Does that make you feel better?”
She gave a small smile.
“Not really.”
He laughed quietly.
“Fair.”
She looked at the Heart.
“So Nightfall wasn’t trying to control us.”
“Not originally.”
Aanya turned.
“What changed?”
The old woman answered.
“People changed.”
Aanya frowned.
“Who?”
“The Founder.”
Aarav’s expression hardened.
“He turned the experiment into something else.”
“Yes.”
“He wanted to control the memories.”
“Yes.”
Aanya looked toward the Heart.
“And my mother tried to stop him.”
The woman nodded.
“She failed.”
Aanya whispered:
“Where is she now?”
The woman looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Aanya stared at her.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Then— the Heart suddenly flashed.
A single image appeared inside it.
Aanya’s mother.
Alive.
Standing somewhere completely different.
Aanya stepped forward.
“Mum!”
The image disappeared.
Aanya turned toward the woman.
“She is alive.”
The woman said nothing.
Aarav looked at the Heart.
“Where was that?”
The old woman whispered:
“Beyond Ravenhall.”
Aanya’s heart raced.
“Where?”
The woman looked toward the chamber’s far wall.
A hidden doorway slowly appeared.
Above it were four words:
THE OBSERVER’S ARCHIVE.
Aanya stared.
The old woman stepped backward.
“Now you understand why I told you not to remember.”
Aarav looked at Aanya.
She took a breath.
“Then let’s remember everything.”
Together, they walked toward the door.
Behind them, the original Heart pulsed once.
THUMP.
And somewhere beyond the doorway— something was already watching.
