The staircase seemed to have no end.
Aanya and Aarav walked side by side.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Aanya broke the silence.
“My mother is alive.”
Aarav smiled.
“You’ve said that three times.”
“I know.”
“And you’re still trying to believe it.”
Aanya looked at him.
“Maybe.”
He squeezed her hand.
“Then believe it.”
She smiled faintly.
For the first time in a long time, she felt something she hadn’t expected to feel beneath Ravenhall.
Hope.
Then—
THUMP.
The staircase shook.
Aanya stopped.
“That wasn’t the Heart.”
Aarav nodded.
“No.”
Another sound followed.
THUMP.
But this one was deeper.
Almost like something enormous was moving below them.
Aanya looked down.
“Whatever is down there…”
Aarav finished:
“…it knows we’re coming.”
They reached the bottom.
A massive underground corridor stretched ahead.
Unlike the Original Ravenhall, this place looked untouched.
No dust.
No broken walls.
No abandoned classrooms.
The walls were made of smooth black stone.
Silver symbols moved across them like living writing.
Aanya touched one.
It immediately changed.
A sentence appeared:
THE MEMORY MUST HAVE A WITNESS.
Aarav read it.
“What’s a witness?”
Aanya shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
They continued.
Another inscription appeared.
THE CHOICE MUST HAVE A KEEPER.
Aarav stopped.
“The Keeper.”
Aanya nodded.
Then another line appeared.
THE FUTURE MUST HAVE A CHOOSER.
Aanya looked at Aarav.
“Me?”
“Maybe both of us.”
They walked farther.
At the end of the corridor stood a huge circular door.
Unlike the others, this one had no keyholes.
Instead, it had two names carved into it.
AANYA
AARAV
Aanya’s breath caught.
“It knew we’d come.”
“Or someone made sure we would.”
He placed his hand beside his name.
Aanya placed hers beside hers.
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with floating memories.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Each one contained a different moment.
A student laughing.
A professor teaching.
Someone leaving Ravenhall.
Someone arriving.
Aanya watched them drift past.
“These aren’t just our memories.”
Aarav nodded.
“These belong to everyone.”
A voice suddenly echoed through the room.
“CORRECT.”
Aanya turned.
“Observer?”
The voice answered:
“NOT YET.”
Aarav frowned.
“Then who?”
The memories began moving faster.
They formed a single image.
A young man stood inside it.
The Founder.
He was speaking to someone.
Aanya moved closer.
“I’ve seen this before.”
Aarav looked at her.
“When?”
“In one of my memories.”
The Founder was holding a small silver sphere.
But this time, Aanya noticed something behind him.
A second person.
A child.
A boy.
Aarav’s eyes widened.
“That’s me.”
Aanya stared.
“No…”
The boy stepped forward in the memory.
The Founder placed the sphere into his hands.
Then said:
“You will be the first person to enter the Archive willingly.”
Young Aarav looked at him.
“Why me?”
The Founder answered:
“Because one day, Aanya will need someone who remembers her when she forgets herself.”
The memory vanished.
Aarav stood completely still.
Aanya looked at him.
“You were protecting me before we even knew each other.”
He shook his head.
“I don’t remember doing it.”
“You don’t have to.”
She smiled.
“I do.”
Suddenly, every floating memory stopped.
All at once.
Aanya looked around.
“What happened?”
A deep voice answered.
“THE WITNESS HAS BEEN FOUND.” This chapter is updated first at g.com.
Aarav looked toward the ceiling.
“Who are you?”
The voice replied:
“I AM THE KEEPER OF WHAT WAS NEVER REMEMBERED.”
Aanya’s eyes narrowed.
“Are you the Observer?”
“I AM OLDER THAN THE OBSERVER.”
The room darkened.
A figure slowly appeared at the center.
It wasn’t human.
It was made entirely of memories.
Faces appeared and disappeared across its form.
Students.
Teachers.
Founders.
People Aanya had never seen.
Then— her mother.
Aanya stepped forward.
“Mum?”
The figure spoke.
“SHE IS NOT HERE.”
Aanya stopped.
“Then why do you have her face?”
“BECAUSE I REMEMBER HER.”
Aarav stepped beside Aanya.
“What do you want?”
The figure looked at them.
“THE SAME THING RAVENHALL HAS ALWAYS WANTED.”
Aanya’s voice was firm.
“What?”
The figure answered:
“TO KNOW WHAT YOU WILL CHOOSE.”
The room suddenly filled with silver light.
Two doors appeared.
One on Aanya’s side.
One on Aarav’s.
Above Aanya’s door:
MEMORY.
Above Aarav’s:
FUTURE.
Aanya looked at him.
“Why are there two choices?”
Aarav shook his head.
“Maybe we’re supposed to choose separately.”
The figure spoke again.
“ONE OF YOU MUST REMEMBER EVERYTHING.”
Aanya’s heart sank.
“And the other?”
“ONE OF YOU MUST FORGET.”
Silence.
Aanya looked at Aarav.
Neither moved.
Then Aarav quietly said:
“No.”
Aanya looked at him.
He stepped forward.
“We’re not doing this again.”
The figure remained silent.
Aarav reached for Aanya’s hand.
“We choose together.”
The two doors began shaking.
The figure whispered:
“THEN PROVE IT.”
And both doors opened.
