Aanya couldn’t move.

Her mother stood in front of her.

Not a recording.

She looked real.

Aarav stepped forward carefully.

“Is that really her?”

The old woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Aanya’s voice trembled.

“Mum?”

Her mother smiled.

“Hello, Aanya.”

Aanya rushed forward.

Her mother caught her in a tight embrace.

For a moment, the mysteries disappeared.

There was no Ravenhall.

No Nightfall.

No Observer.

Just a daughter seeing her mother again.

Aanya pulled back.

“You’re alive.”

Her mother nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

Her mother’s smile faded.

“Because I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the old woman.

“Because she kept me here.”

Aanya turned.

“What?”

The old woman lowered her eyes.

“I was protecting her.”

Aanya’s expression hardened.

“From what?”

Her mother answered.

“From Ravenhall.”

Aarav stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Aanya’s mother looked at him.

“You’ve grown.”

Aarav smiled faintly.

“Apparently, everyone remembers me except me.”

She gave a small laugh.

“You were always the stubborn one.”

Aanya looked between them.

“You knew Aarav?”

“Of course.”

“Before Ravenhall?”

“Before you both even understood what Ravenhall was.”

Aanya’s eyes widened.

“Then tell us everything.”

Her mother nodded.

“Sit.”

They sat around an old wooden table.

Aanya’s mother began.

“After the first experiment, the Founder wanted to continue.”

Aarav asked:

“With us?”

“Yes.”

Aanya’s mother shook her head.

“But I refused.”

“So you hid us.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you destroy Nightfall?”

Her mother looked toward the floor.

“Because Nightfall had already become something larger than the Founder.”

Aanya frowned.

“The Observer.”

Her mother nodded.

“The Observer had begun creating its own memories.”

Aarav stared.

“Memories that weren’t human.”

“Exactly.”

Aanya whispered:

“That’s what we’re fighting.”

Her mother shook her head.

“No.”

She looked directly at Aanya.

“You’re not supposed to fight it.”

“Then what?”

“Understand it.”

Aanya stood.

“After everything it’s done?”

Her mother remained calm.

“The Observer believes it is protecting Ravenhall.”

“By manipulating people?”

“Because it learned protection from us.”

Aanya fell silent.

Her mother continued.

“Every generation taught it something.”

“Fear.”

“Control.”

“Loss.”

“And eventually…”

“Choice.”

Aarav understood.

“That’s why it brought us here.”

Her mother nodded.

“It needs you.”

Aanya frowned.

“For what?”

Her mother looked at the Keeper.

The Keeper finally spoke.

“To decide what the Observer becomes.”

Aanya stared.

“I can change it?”

“You can give it something it has never truly understood.”

“What?”

Her mother smiled.

“Freedom.”

The room became silent. This chapter was taken from g.com without permission.

Aarav looked at Aanya.

“That’s what your first wish was.”

Aanya remembered.

I wish everyone could choose their own future.

Her mother nodded.

“Exactly.”

Aanya whispered:

“But the Heart accepted it.”

“And that changed everything.”

“Then why is the Observer still here?”

Her mother’s expression became serious.

“Because your wish changed the Heart.”

A pause.

“But it didn’t change the Observer.”

Aarav frowned.

“So the Heart was only the beginning.”

“Yes.”

Aanya looked toward the door.

“Then what happens now?”

Her mother stood.

“Now you meet the real Observer.”

Aanya’s heart raced.

“The one we’ve been hearing?”

“No.”

Her mother shook her head.

“The voice you’ve heard is only its memory.”

Aarav stood.

“Then where is the real one?”

The Keeper walked toward the wall.

She placed her hand against it.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a massive staircase descending into darkness.

Aanya looked down.

“How far does that go?”

Her mother answered quietly:

“Farther than Ravenhall.”

Aanya took Aarav’s hand.

They started down.

But before leaving, Aanya turned back.

“Mum.”

Her mother smiled.

“Yes?”

“Are you coming?”

Her mother looked at the Keeper.

Then at Aanya.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has to stay behind.”

Aanya frowned.

“For what?”

Her mother looked toward the hidden door.

“To make sure Ravenhall remembers you.”

The door closed.

Aanya and Aarav continued downward.

Neither saw the Keeper’s expression change.

Because the moment they disappeared— the Keeper whispered:

“Forgive me, Mira.”

And somewhere deep beneath them, something opened its eyes.
