The moment Fu Xu heard the sound, he turned around. His fingertips had barely brushed Shen Louchen’s arm when he felt the man’s body suddenly sway violently. Those deep, ink black eyes instantly lost their focus and his entire frame seemed to be drained of strength. He collapsed forward without warning.
Fu Xu instinctively reached out to catch him but Shen Louchen’s weight slammed into him like a falling mountain. Fu Xu staggered back several steps, his spine hitting the edge of the bed hard, pain shooting up his back and forcing a sharp inhale from between his teeth.
“Mr. Shen!” Fu Xu panicked. He ignored the throbbing ache along his lower back and used every bit of strength in his small frame to drag the man toward the bed.
Shen Louchen’s shoulders were broad, his back solid, the kind of build that looked deceptively lean under clothes but felt overwhelmingly heavy in moments like this. His full weight pressed down mercilessly.
Fu Xu’s arms trembled violently and a sheen of sweat quickly formed across his forehead. The wound along the side of his neck tugged painfully with every movement but he didn’t dare stop, not even for a breath. He gritted his teeth, inching Shen Louchen’s body across the bed bit by bit.
By the time he finally got the man settled properly, Fu Xu collapsed onto the carpet, breathing hard, lungs burning. His heart pounded as if it were trying to burst out of his throat. After a long moment, he lifted his head and leaned toward the bed, quietly watching Shen Louchen’s sleeping face.
The other man’s brows were tightly furrowed, as though he were caught in some restless dream. His lips were pale, stripped of their usual cold sharpness and revealing a rare, fragile softness instead.
Fu Xu slowly lifted his hand, wanting to smooth the crease between his brows. But just as his fingertips were about to touch, he suddenly froze. His hand recoiled as if burned.
Who was he, really?
Nothing, just an omega temporarily taken in by the Shen family. An omega without even a proper pheromone signature. Someone not even qualified to be marked by anyone.
And Shen Louchen’s words still echoed painfully in his ears.
“Do what you’re supposed to do. Don’t covet things that don’t belong to you.”
Yesterday’s closeness, those gentler moments, had only been the result of suppressant side effects. Nothing more. The reliance born from his lost memory. None of it could be taken as real.
He shouldn’t be greedy.
Fu Xu stood up and gently pulled the blanket over Shen Louchen’s body. His movements were feather light, as if one wrong shift would disturb the man’s sleep.
The single sofa in the bedroom was small, barely suitable for sitting, let alone sleeping. Fu Xu curled himself into it, knees tucked to his chest. He barely fit.
The cushion was firm enough that it pressed painfully against his bones but somehow the discomfort made him feel more at ease. At least like this he wasn’t crossing any boundaries. At least he wasn’t indulging in fantasies he knew were impossible.
Moonlight slipped quietly through the window, falling over the bed and illuminating the curled up figure in the corner. Fu Xu closed his eyes. He could still faintly smell Shen Louchen’s clean, cool scent lingering at the tip of his nose, like spring water flowing through a mountain stream, fresh and grounding.
But he didn’t dare think about it. He could only clutch the fabric of his clothes and force himself toward sleep.
The night passed fitfully. The sofa was too small, too narrow and he constantly worried he would fall off. Half asleep, he woke several times, each time glancing immediately toward the bed. Only when he confirmed that Shen Louchen was still sleeping peacefully did he relax enough to close his eyes again.
Near dawn, his exhaustion finally caught up with him and he slipped into a deeper sleep. But by the time he woke again, the sky outside was already bright. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains, warm and golden.
Fu Xu moved his stiff neck and slowly climbed out of the sofa. His entire body ached as if he had been taken apart and badly put back together.
Shen Louchen was still asleep on the bed, his breathing steady, his brows relaxed. Peaceful.
Fu Xu stepped out of the bedroom as quietly as he could and headed straight toward the kitchen. There were still fresh ingredients in the refrigerator. He wanted to make something light, Mr. Shen had fainted yesterday, so his body must still be weak.
Cooking congee took time, so Fu Xu stayed by the clay pot, watching the grains soften little by little. The soothing aroma of rice filled the air. He fried two soft boiled eggs, prepared some crisp side dishes and arranged them on delicate white porcelain plates, the exact simple foods Shen Louchen occasionally ate.
When everything was ready, he tiptoed back to the bedroom. Just as he entered, Shen Louchen opened his eyes. The moment he saw Fu Xu, a faint light flickered in his gaze.
“You’re awake?” Fu Xu asked, his voice gentle.
Shen Louchen nodded. He pushed aside the blanket and sat up, his eyes following Fu Xu closely, almost possessively, as if afraid he would slip away. “Hungry.”
“Breakfast is ready, Mr. Shen.” Fu Xu smiled lightly and turned to leave but his wrist was suddenly caught.
Shen Louchen lowered his head, his fingers rubbing the inside of Fu Xu’s wrist. His voice was slightly hoarse, slightly muffled. “Together.”
For a moment, Fu Xu didn’t understand. When it clicked that Shen Louchen wanted to eat with him, he instinctively pulled back.
“Mr. Shen… please go ahead first.”
Only then did Shen Louchen release him. He obediently got out of bed and headed toward the bathroom, his steps still a little heavy with sleep. But even as he walked, he turned back to look, just to make sure Fu Xu was still there. Only then did he close the door.
Fu Xu brought the breakfast to the dining table. The congee in the white porcelain bowl still sent up delicate wisps of steam.
Shen Louchen came out after washing up and sat down, his eyes falling on Fu Xu again, filled with a quiet expectation. “Come eat.”
Fu Xu shook his head and automatically stepped back. “I should wash up first. My clothes smell like… cooking.”
He remembered vividly, last time he had cooked, he had stood too close to Shen Louchen and the man had faintly frowned. Though the expression disappeared quickly, he had seen it. Someone as clean and particular as Mr. Shen must dislike the smell of oil and smoke.
But Shen Louchen’s brows tightened immediately. His tone carried an unyielding firmness. “No. Eat first.”
“But…” Fu Xu grew anxious. The last thing he wanted was to make Mr. Shen uncomfortable or worse, make him dislike him over something so trivial. “I smell like cooking oil. It’ll bother you.”
Shen Louchen looked at his reddening eyes and something in his chest softened without warning.
Fu Xu thought his silence meant anger. Panic flickered across his face. In desperation, his voice softened, gentle, coaxing, almost childlike.
“Mr. Shen, I’ll be quick. After I shower, I’ll come back and eat with you. Please? Just half an hour… you can have a little first?”
As he spoke, he cautiously reached out and touched Shen Louchen’s arm, barely brushing the fabric, testing, pleading.
Shen Louchen felt his heart jolt. All the resistance he had been holding onto crumbled in an instant. Fu Xu’s soft voice, gentle and careful, stroked at his heart like a feather, impossible to ignore and even harder to refuse.
“…All right.”
He heard himself give in, voice low. A faint heat crept up his ears and before he realized it, a pair of white beast ears flickered into existence atop his head, tilting backward in shy surrender.
Fu Xu hadn’t expected him to agree that easily. For a second he just stood there, stunned, before the realization hit him. A bright smile bloomed across his pale face, like sunlight breaking through after a long rain, dazzling and warm. “Thank you, Mr. Shen! I’ll be back very soon!”
With that, he spun around and bounded up the stairs, his steps so light it was as if he were running atop clouds.
It seemed that the Mr. Shen of this moment was just like the real one, simply stroke his fur the right way and everything would be fine.
Shen Louchen sat at the dining table, watching until the omega’s slim silhouette disappeared around the stairway corner. Only then did he slowly pick up the spoon. But he didn’t have much appetite at all. He merely stirred the congee in the bowl absentmindedly.
He didn’t know what had come over him earlier. A faint fragrance had seemed to drift past him and before he could think, he’d found himself agreeing. The feeling was strange, unfamiliar yet not unpleasant.
Time ticked by. The congee on the table gradually lost its warmth. Shen Louchen lifted his gaze toward the wall clock. Half an hour had already passed. Still no sign of Fu Xu.
An inexplicable panic rose in his chest, tight, restless, unpleasant. The omega was so thin, his body so frail. What if something had happened?
He couldn’t sit still any longer. He shot up from the chair and strode toward the stairs, taking them two, three steps at a time. He rushed down the hallway to the bathroom door. Inside was silent. No movement. No sound of water splashing.
He knocked hard, voice unconsciously rising with urgency. “Are you in there?”
No answer.
Shen Louchen’s heart clenched, rising right into his throat. He didn’t bother knocking again. He twisted the doorknob and pushed.
Cold water was still running loudly from the showerhead. Fu Xu sat slumped against the tiled wall, his entire body limp. His face was chalk white, lips drained of any color, eyes tightly shut. He looked like he could faint at any moment.
“Fu Xu!” Shen Louchen lunged forward and caught him. His body was alarmingly hot, scorching yet his hands and feet were icy cold.
At the touch, Fu Xu slowly pried his eyes open, his gaze unfocused. When he saw who it was, his lips parted slightly. His voice was so soft it was almost a sigh.
“Mr. Shen…”
He wanted to say he was fine. But before the words could form, darkness swallowed his vision. His knees buckled and he slipped downward again. Shen Louchen’s reflexes kicked in; he caught him quickly.
The loose bathrobe shifted with movement, falling open just enough to reveal pale skin and a narrow, delicate frame beneath. His shoulder blades were so thin they cast shadows, fragile and sharp all at once.
Shen Louchen’s gaze swept over him instinctively and his mind buzzed, blanking out for a moment. This omega was painfully slender but his skin was impossibly fair, so fair it almost glowed. A mere brush would tint it faintly pink. The sight made something in his chest tighten. His breath grew unsteady.
A faint heat curled at the edges of his hearing. He lifted a hand subconsciously to touch and felt them. His tiger ears. At some point they had sprung out, trembling now with agitation and panic.
“Damn it.” Shen Louchen muttered under his breath. He tore his eyes away and snatched a bath towel from the side, wrapping Fu Xu tightly, covering every bit of exposed skin before tying it securely. Only then did he bend down and lift him into his arms.
Fu Xu was featherlight, as light as a piece of down. But Shen Louchen felt as though he were carrying something unbearably precious, something that weighed on his heart with each step. He walked carefully, afraid he might hurt him with even the smallest jolt.
Halfway down the stairs, Fu Xu stirred. It was unclear whether he was awake. He shifted slightly, curling closer into the warmth of Shen Louchen’s embrace like a small animal seeking refuge.
Shen Louchen’s heart skipped a beat. His arms tightened automatically, holding him even more securely. He laid Fu Xu gently on the living room sofa, tucking a soft blanket over him before turning and returning to the kitchen to bring the congee.
“Eat something first.” He settled down beside the sofa. His voice was soft enough to melt.
Fu Xu’s eyelashes trembled and he slowly opened his eyes, still hazy and unfocused. When he saw the bowl of congee in Shen Louchen’s hands, he shook his head weakly. “I can’t…”
“No.” Shen Louchen’s tone was firm but devoid of anger, gentle but unyielding. “You can’t skip food. You almost fainted.”
He scooped a spoonful of congee, blew gently until the steam faded, then brought it to Fu Xu’s lips. “Open your mouth.”
Fu Xu looked at him, really looked. The seriousness in that handsome face, the worry hidden in his eyes, the gentle patience behind every movement. He didn’t have any appetite at all and Mr. Shen feeding him personally was something unimaginable, something far too precious.
But when he saw the concern in Shen Louchen’s gaze, any refusal lodged in his throat. His lips parted faintly and he accepted the spoonful of congee.
The soft, warm rice slid into his stomach like a small ember of comfort, easing the ache somewhat.
Seeing him swallow, Shen Louchen immediately scooped another spoonful and carefully fed him again.
And so, spoon by spoon, Fu Xu ate. All the while, he watched the man’s side profile, the tense line of his brows when Fu Xu swallowed slowly, the unmistakable concern nestled deep between his eyes. Each detail filled Fu Xu’s heart with a warmth that trembled on the edge of pain.
He remembered his days in the Fu household. Whenever he was sick, no one cared. He would curl up in a corner, trembling alone. There was never anyone willing to feed him with such patience.
“Mr. Shen…” Fu Xu whispered suddenly, his voice still weak. “Your ears…”
Shen Louchen froze. Only then did he realize his tiger ears were still out. A rush of embarrassment swept through him. His ears reddened instantly and he reached up in a panic, trying to hide them, completely forgetting he still held the spoon. The bowl wobbled and a spoonful of congee nearly spilled onto Fu Xu.
“Did it burn you?” Shen Louchen set the bowl down immediately, leaning in to check.
Fu Xu shook his head. A soft laugh escaped him, barely there but warm. Color finally returned to his pale cheeks.
Sunlight filtered through the windows, bathing the room in a golden glow. The cozy warmth of the space mingled with the gentle scent of rice porridge and faint traces of their bath soap, filling the air with a comforting softness.
Fu Xu managed only half a bowl before he truly couldn’t take another bite. Shen Louchen didn’t push him. He set the bowl aside, then pulled the blanket higher over the omega’s shoulders. As he did, his fingers brushed Fu Xu’s cheek, still burning.
He meant to pull back but then he heard Fu Xu murmur something unclear. He leaned in instinctively and his cheek brushed against Fu Xu’s skin. A strange jolt of sensation shot through him.
The contrast was sharp, his cooler fingertips against Fu Xu’s feverish warmth. His chest tightened and he pressed his palm more firmly to check the heat, thumb gently stroking the soft skin.
Fu Xu was exhausted. Being fed earlier had drained the last of his strength. Leaning on the sofa, his consciousness swayed like a candle flame in a draft.
The coolness of Shen Louchen’s palm felt soothing and he instinctively leaned into it. His eyelids grew heavier and heavier, until at last he gave up struggling. His head slipped to the side, landing softly against Shen Louchen’s chest.
He made a small, faint sound, more breath than voice and curled instinctively, like a kitten finding a warm nest. His face nestled against the hollow of Shen Louchen’s neck. His nose brushed the man’s throat, sending a tickling shiver down his skin.
Shen Louchen stiffened. He meant to push him away. But his fingers met nothing but soft, warm flesh and the mild fragrance drifting from Fu Xu’s skin, something like a fragile blossom after rain, wrapped around him.
Not strong, not provocative but lingering, threading into his senses. Fu Xu’s body was soft and warm, like holding a cloud or a ball of cotton, weightless and pliant. Too fragile. Too tempting.
A strange, inexplicable comfort washed over him, soothing something tight deep inside his heart. The tension in his shoulders eased. Warmth seeped into his bones. Without realizing it, he tightened his arms around the omega, pulling him closer.
The faint scent lingered at his nose. His gaze dropped to the soft pink of Fu Xu’s earlobe and something dark and instinctive stirred, an urge to nip it, to see if it tasted as sweet as it looked.
His throat bobbed. He was a breath away from giving in,
When suddenly, a flash of chaotic memory sliced through his mind.
A damp basement. The suffocating reek of pheromones.
A shadowy Omega whispering things in the darkness, voice dripping with manipulation. His own body trapped by invisible chains, burning with heat, unable to move, forced to obey, forced to endure.
The humiliation. The fury. The helplessness.
It all came crashing back like a tidal wave, snuffing out the haze in his mind.
“Shit.” Shen Louchen snapped back to himself, eyes sharpening, cold. He felt contaminated, violated, just by the memory. Without thinking, he pushed Fu Xu away.
The omega’s body, already weak, swayed without support. He managed to catch himself only by leaning on the sofa armrest. Pain flickered across his pale features, his brows knitting tightly.
The sight hit Shen Louchen in the gut. The hardness in his chest crumbled again.
This wasn’t that omega.
This was Fu Xu, the timid, soft spoken omega who never even dared raise his voice.
What the hell had he been thinking?
A frustrated frown creased his brow but in the end, he couldn’t endure the sight of Fu Xu shrinking away in pain. He gathered the omega back into his arms, this time slow, careful, gentle. He tugged the blanket higher, covering his exposed shoulders.
Fu Xu snuggled faintly against him, finding a comfortable spot. His breathing steadied, long lashes trembling lightly before settling. He didn’t wake again.
Shen Louchen stayed exactly like that, motionless on the sofa, watching the peaceful face in his arms as the afternoon sun gradually shifted to a warm orange glow. Only when the light deepened did he finally lift him and bring him back to the bedroom, laying him carefully on the bed.
When Fu Xu opened his eyes again, the sky outside was already dark.
He woke from hunger. His stomach ached faintly from being so empty. As he pushed himself upright, he realized he was lying in Shen Louchen’s bed, wrapped in a soft, warm blanket. The room was quiet. Mr. Shen wasn’t there.
On the bedside table lay his phone. He picked it up. A new message lit the screen, sent by Gu Wangyan.
[Fu Xu, are you free tomorrow? I’ll take you out somewhere. I promised last time.]
Gu Wangyan was the only person he could really talk to so far. Seeing the message, Fu Xu’s eyes brightened, a small spark of anticipation rising in his chest.
Ever since the Fu family had dragged him back, he had never been allowed to step outside that small courtyard, not even once. Even after arriving at the Shen residence, he was escorted everywhere, never truly free to go where he wished.
It felt like ages since he had last looked up at the open sky. So long that sometimes he wondered whether he had ever truly been free at all or if freedom was just something he had imagined.
People kept in chains for too long eventually start believing they belong in them.
He truly did want to go out… but would Mr. Shen agree?
That thought flickered across Fu Xu’s eyes and the faint light in them dimmed almost instantly. His fingertips hovered above the screen, hesitating, trembling just slightly. In the end, he didn’t dare reply right away.
By the time dinner came around, Fu Xu’s appetite had improved a little; at least he could force down a few more bites.
The dining room was quiet, almost unnaturally quiet. Only the soft clink of chopsticks and porcelain occasionally broke the stillness.
Several times, Fu Xu wanted to speak. The words rose to his lips yet dissolved before he could make a sound, swallowed back down along with his courage. His fingers twisted nervously in the corner of the tablecloth.
Shen Louchen noticed his unease. He lifted his gaze, his eyes calm yet sharp. “Is something the matter?”
“N no… nothing…” Fu Xu instinctively shook his head. Only when Shen Louchen’s attention returned to his own bowl did he finally force himself to gather the remnants of his courage and whispered, “Mr. Shen, I… may I go out for a while tomorrow? Dr. Gu asked me to… to come for treatment.”
The moment the words left his lips, he sensed a subtle shift in the air between them.
Across the table, the hand holding Shen Louchen’s chopsticks stilled for a brief second. He didn’t speak but his eyebrows lowered ever so slightly and the unreadable emotion in his eyes carried a quiet pressure, one that pressed down on Fu Xu’s chest until his heart began to sink.
Sure enough… the answer should be no.
Fu Xu lowered his head, his voice shrinking to a thin whisper. “I just thought I should ask… If you don’t agree… It’s fine.” He didn’t speak again, simply stirred the rice in his bowl, listless and small.
The atmosphere in the dining room grew even heavier, thick enough to feel like the air itself solidified. Fu Xu could sense Shen Louchen’s gaze land on him now and then, deep, oppressive, making him stiffen in his seat.
Just when he thought the matter was over, dismissed by silence, Shen Louchen suddenly spoke.
“You may go.”
Fu Xu’s head snapped up, eyes wide with disbelief. “You… you agree?”
Shen Louchen set his chopsticks down with a quiet sound, picked up the napkin and calmly wiped his lips. Then he lifted his eyes, gaze steady. “You may go but there is one condition.”
“Mr. Shen, please say it!” Fu Xu nodded frantically, hope suddenly rekindled in his eyes.
Shen Louchen’s gaze lingered on him for several seconds before he said, slowly and clearly, “From now on… you will sleep with me.”
Fu Xu froze.
His face reddened in an instant, first his cheeks, then the flush spread down his neck and even colored the tips of his ears. F, from now on? Sleep with him? As in… every night? In the same bed?
His first instinct was to refuse, such a thing was far, far beyond his place. But one look into Shen Louchen’s expression, dark and carrying a silent authority that brooked no resistance, told him that refusal would be impossible.
If he said no, he might not only anger Mr. Shen, he might also lose the only chance he had to step outside tomorrow.
Fu Xu bit his lower lip tightly, his fingers curling around the fabric of his clothes. His voice was tiny, soft as a mosquito’s wing. “…Okay.”
Upon hearing that answer, Shen Louchen’s tightly drawn brows relaxed by the faintest degree. Something like a smile, a shadow of amusement, flashed deep in his eyes, though it disappeared quickly. He simply said, in a tone that returned to its usual light, “Eat.”
That night, Fu Xu lay stiffly beside Shen Louchen, his entire body as rigid as carved stone. His breaths were shallow, barely audible, terrified of brushing even a fraction closer to the man beside him yet the scent of Shen Louchen, clean, cool, distinctively his, lingered close, flooding Fu Xu’s senses and sending his heart into disarray.
He didn’t know when he finally fell asleep. His only memory was the faint sensation of a warm hand settling around his waist, gently drawing him closer. After that, darkness enveloped him completely, peaceful and dreamless.
When Fu Xu woke the next morning, Shen Louchen was already awake. He was lying on his side, quietly watching him, gaze so focused it made Fu Xu’s cheeks burn.
“M.. Mr. Shen… I should get up now. Dr. Gu is waiting for me.” As he spoke, Fu Xu tried to lift the blanket and sit up.
But his wrist was caught.
Shen Louchen didn’t speak. He simply pulled him back into his arms, holding him firmly.
Fu Xu’s face pressed against the man’s chest and he could hear the steady, powerful heartbeat thumping beneath his ear, each beat landing directly against the sensitive place in his heart. Shen Louchen’s chin rested lightly on his hair, his breath brushing the crown of Fu Xu’s head, warm, soft, almost intimate.
“Mr. Shen…” Fu Xu’s voice trembled slightly.
“Stay a little longer,” Shen Louchen murmured, his tone low with a lingering hint of morning drowsiness. His nose brushed gently against the back of Fu Xu’s neck, where his gland lay. “Just for a moment.”
Fu Xu could only comply, letting the man hold him. His heart fluttered anxiously yet… he couldn’t find a single trace of resistance in himself. Shen Louchen’s embrace was warm and steady, like a harbor that could shield him from the world. It made him want to linger far longer than he should.
After who knew how long, Shen Louchen finally loosened his hold. His gaze lingered on the faint flush still staining Fu Xu’s cheeks. “Come back early.”
“Mm.” Fu Xu nodded quickly. He slipped from the bed almost like someone fleeing, hurriedly washed up, dressed and exited the room.
Shen Louchen escorted him to the entrance, watching as he climbed into Gu Wangyan’s car. Only after the vehicle disappeared from sight did he finally turn and walk back inside.
He had barely shut the door when the doorbell rang.
Standing outside was Lin Yunzhou, carrying a medical case.
“A’Chen,” Lin said as he stepped in, “I came to check your condition and by the way, ”
His words cut off abruptly. His gaze slid past Shen Louchen’s neck.
There, against the skin, was a strand of hair, a color that definitely did not belong to Shen Louchen.
Lin Yunzhou’s eyes narrowed. “What’s that on your neck?”
Shen Louchen instinctively touched the spot but didn’t feel anything out of place.
Lin Yunzhou brushed past him and entered the house. His gaze swept the living room, lingering on the sofa. His brows knitted slightly. “Did you sleep on the couch last night?”
“No,” Shen Louchen replied curtly.
“Then that means…” Lin Yunzhou raised an eyebrow, voice tightening with suspicion, “you slept in the bed, with someone else? And the material I mentioned last time, about the side effects of the inhibitor, did you ask the old man about it?”
A flicker passed through Shen Louchen’s eyes and his tone showed a rare hint of impatience. “I forgot.”
Lin Yunzhou’s expression sharpened instantly.
Shen Louchen never forgot anything, especially not matters regarding his own health and his reaction just now, along with the faint mark on his neck… none of it added up.
Something was wrong.
A troubling suspicion rose in Lin Yunzhou’s mind. “Louchen.. did you forget something again?”
“What could I possibly forget?” Shen Louchen asked, genuinely puzzled.
Aside from the inexplicable presence of an omega in his home, he hadn’t forgotten anything. Why would Lin Yunzhou bring up such a question?
“Then do you still remember,” Lin Yunzhou said slowly, his gaze boring into him, “why did that omega appeared in your home in the first place?”
Shen Louchen lifted his eyes. “Aren’t we mutually in love.
